Computer simulation of a space SAR using a range-sequential processor for soil moisture mapping

The ability of a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to detect soil moisture was evaluated by means of a computer simulation technique. The computer simulation package includes coherent processing of the SAR data using a range-sequential processor, which can be set up through hardware implementations, thereby reducing the amount of telemetry involved. With such a processing approach, it is possible to monitor the earth's surface on a continuous basis, since data storage requirements can be easily met through the use of currently available technology. The Development of the simulation package is described, followed by an examination of the application of the technique to actual environments. The results indicate that in estimating soil moisture content with a four-look processor, the difference between the assumed and estimated values of soil moisture is within + or - 20% of field capacity for 62% of the pixels for agricultural terrain and for 53% of the pixels for hilly terrain. The estimation accuracy for soil moisture may be improved by reducing the effect of fading through non-coherent averaging.

Assessment of radar resolution requirements for soil moisture estimation from simulated satellite imagery

Radar simulations were performed at five-day intervals over a twenty-day period and used to estimate soil moisture from a generalized algorithm requiring only received power and the mean elevation of a test site near Lawrence, Kansas. The results demonstrate that the soil moisture of about 90% of the 20-m by 20-m pixel elements can be predicted with an accuracy of + or - 20% of field capacity within relatively flat agricultural portions of the test site. Radar resolutions of 93 m by 100 m with 23 looks or coarser gave the best results, largely because of the effects of signal fading. For the distribution of land cover categories, soils, and elevation in the test site, very coarse radar resolutions of 1 km by 1 km and 2.6 km by 3.1 km gave the best results for wet moisture conditions while a finer resolution of 93 m by 100 m was found to yield superior results for dry to moist soil conditions.

Tailored Persistent Radical‐containing Heterotrimetal‐Organic Framework for Boosting Efficiency of Visible/NIR Light‐driven Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Abstract Promoting light absorption range of photocatalysts is of great significance to improve solar light‐driven photocatalytic CO 2 reduction efficiency. Herein, a new viologen‐based multicomponent heterotrimetallic metal–organic framework (MOF) [Cu 3 Th 6 ( µ 3 ‐O) 4 ( µ 3 ‐OH) 4 (cpb) 12 ][Fe III (CN) 6 ] 6 (IHEP‐14) with an unprecedented (6, 18)‐connected she ‐ d topology is presented. Upon UV irradiation, this MOF undergoes ligand and iron photoreduction, and a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal transformation to generate persistent radical‐containing MOF [Cu 3 Th 6 ( µ 3 ‐O) 4 ( µ 3 ‐OH) 4 (cpb • ) 12 ][Fe II (CN) 6 ] 6 (IHEP‐15). This radical‐containing MOF shows excellent stability without fading after at least 2 months in air. Besides extending the photoabsorption to a wider wavelength range covering from 200 to 2,500 nm, the generation of persistent radical in IHEP‐15 also largely enhances its CO 2 adsorption capacity by a factor of three due to the strong affinity between π orbital of the radical and the π system of CO 2 . These attributes endow IHEP‐15 with excellent visible/NIR light‐driven CO 2 photoreduction activity, with CO production rates under visible and NIR irradiation of 570.3 and 209.3 µmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. Notably, the latter is a record high for NIR‐induced CO production among all MOFs reported so far.

Stabilized Co-Free Li-Rich Oxide Cathode Particles with An Artificial Surface Prereconstruction

Li-rich metal oxide (LXMO) cathodes have attracted intense interest for rechargeable batteries because of their high capacity above 250 mAh g –1 . However, the side effects of hybrid anion and cation redox (HACR) reactions, such as oxygen release and phase collapse that result from global oxygen migration (GOM), have prohibited the commercialization of LXMO. GOM not only destabilizes the oxygen sublattice in cycling, aggravating the well-known voltage fading, but also intensifies electrolyte decomposition and Mn dissolution, causing severe full-cell performance degradation. In this study, an artificial surface prereconstruction (ASR) for Li 1.2 Mn 0.6 Ni 0.2 O 2 particles with a molten-molybdate leaching is conducted, which creates a crystal-dense anion-redox-free LiMn 1.5 Ni 0.5 O 4 shell that completely encloses the LXMO lattice (ASR-LXMO). Differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that GOM is shut down in cycling, which not only stabilizes HACR in ASR-LXMO, but also mitigates the electrolyte decomposition and Mn dissolution. ASR-LXMO displays greatly stabilized cycling performance as it retains 237.4 mAh g –1 with an average discharge voltage of 3.30 V after 200 cycles. More crucially, while the pristine LXMO cycling cannot survive 90 cycles in a pouch full-cell matched with a commercial graphite anode and lean (2 g A –1 h –1 ) electrolyte, ASR-LXMO shows high capacity retention of 76% after 125 cycles in full-cell cycling.

Achievable Rate and Energy Efficiency Analysis of Multiuser Relay-Aided Massive MIMO Downlink

In this article, the achievable sum rate and the energy efficiency (EE) are investigated for a multiuser relay-aided massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) downlink. Low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are equipped at both the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS), and the amplify-and-forward protocol is adopted at the RS. Under the Rician fading channel, closed-form approximate expressions for the achievable sum rate are derived with perfect and imperfect channel state information. Furthermore, a more general power law is extracted to save transmit power without reducing the achievable sum rate, and a local optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to improve the channel capacity of active users. Then, the tradeoff between the achievable sum rate and the EE is discussed. The numerical results show that, due to the quantization noise, the transmit power has a limited increase in the achievable rate. In addition, it is more valuable to improve the DAC quantization bit at the RS when the number of BS antennas is larger than that of RS antennas. In addition, under strong line-of-sight channels or high pilot transmit power conditions, the channel estimation accuracy is higher, and the best tradeoff between the achievable sum rate and the EE can be obtained when the DAC quantization bit is 4.

Customer premise service study for 30/20 GHz satellite system

Satellite systems in which the space segment operates in the 30/20 GHz frequency band are defined and compared as to their potential for providing various types of communications services to customer premises and the economic and technical feasibility of doing so. Technical tasks performed include: market postulation, definition of the ground segment, definition of the space segment, definition of the integrated satellite system, service costs for satellite systems, sensitivity analysis, and critical technology. Based on an analysis of market data, a sufficiently large market for services is projected so as to make the system economically viable. A large market, and hence a high capacity satellite system, is found to be necessary to minimize service costs, i.e., economy of scale is found to hold. The wide bandwidth expected to be available in the 30/20 GHz band, along with frequency reuse which further increases the effective system bandwidth, makes possible the high capacity system. Extensive ground networking is required in most systems to both connect users into the system and to interconnect Earth stations to provide spatial diversity. Earth station spatial diversity is found to be a cost effective means of compensating the large fading encountered in the 30/20 GHz operating band.

Uranium In Situ Electrolytic Deposition with a Reusable Functional Graphene-Foam Electrode

Nuclear fission produces 400 GWe which represents 11% of the global electricity output. Uranium is the essential element as both fission fuel and radioactive waste. Therefore, the recovery of uranium is of great importance. In this study, an in situ electrolytic deposition method to extract uranium from aqueous solution is reported. A functionalized reduced graphene oxide foam (3D-FrGOF) is used as the working electrode, which acts as both a hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst and a uranium deposition substrate. The specific electrolytic deposition capacity for U(VI) ions with the 3D-FrGOF is 4560 mg g –1 without reaching saturation, and the Coulombic efficiency can reach 54%. Moreover, reduction of the uranium concentration in spiked seawater from 3 ppm to 19.9 ppb is achieved, which is lower than the US Environmental Protection Agency uranium limits for drinking water (30 ppb). Furthermore, the collection electrode can be efficiently regenerated and recycled at least nine times without much efficiency fading, by ejecting into 2000 ppm concentrated uranium solution in a second bath with reverse voltage bias. All these findings open new opportunities in using free-standing 3D-FrGOF electrode as an advanced separation technique for water treatment.

Unlocking anionic redox activity in O3-type sodium 3 d layered oxides via Li substitution

Sodium ion batteries, because of their sustainability attributes, could be an attractive alternative to Li-ion technology for specific applications. However, it remains challenging to design high energy density and moisture stable Na-based positive electrodes. Here, we report an O3-type NaLi 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 phase showing anionic redox activity, obtained through a ceramic process by carefully adjusting synthesis conditions and stoichiometry. This phase shows a sustained reversible capacity of 190 mAh g -1 that is rooted in cumulative oxygen and manganese redox processes as deduced by combined spectroscopy techniques. Unlike many other anionic redox layered oxides so far reported, O3-NaLi 1/3 Mn 2/3 O 2 electrodes do not show discernible voltage fade on cycling. This finding, rationalized by density functional theory, sheds light on the role of inter- versus intralayer 3d cationic migration in ruling voltage fade in anionic redox electrodes. Another practical asset of this material stems from its moisture stability, hence facilitating its handling and electrode processing. Altogether, this work offers future directions towards designing highly performing sodium electrodes for advanced Na-ion batteries.

Advanced space transportation technologies

A wide range of propulsion technologies for space transportation are discussed in the literature. It is clear from the literature review that a single propulsion technology cannot satisfy the many mission needs in space. Many of the technologies tested, proposed, or in experimental stages relate to: chemical and nuclear fuel; radiative and corpuscular external energy source; tethers; cannons; and electromagnetic acceleration. The scope and limitation of these technologies is well tabulated in the literature. Prior experience has shown that an extensive amount of fuel needs to be carried along for the return mission. This requirement puts additional constraints on the lift off rocket technology and limits the payload capacity. Consider the possibility of refueling in space. If the return fuel supply is guaranteed, it will not only be possible to lift off more payload but also to provide security and safety of the mission. Exploration to deep space where solar sails and thermal effects fade would also be possible. Refueling would also facilitate travel on the planet of exploration. This aspect of space transportation prompts the present investigation. The particle emissions from the Sun's corona will be collected under three different conditions: in space closer to the Sun, in the Van Allen Belts; and on the Moon. It is proposed to convert the particle state into gaseous, liquid, or solid state and store it for refueling space vehicles. These facilities may be called space pump stations and the fuel collected as space fuel. Preliminary estimates of fuel collection at all three sites will be made. Future work will continue towards advancing the art of collection rate and design schemes for pumping stations.

Parasitic structure defect blights sustainability of cobalt-free single crystalline cathodes

Abstract Recent efforts to reduce battery costs and enhance sustainability have focused on eliminating Cobalt (Co) from cathode materials. While Co-free designs have shown notable success in polycrystalline cathodes, their impact on single crystalline (SC) cathodes remains less understood due to the significantly extended lithium diffusion pathways and the higher-temperature synthesis involved. Here, we reveal that removing Co from SC cathodes is structurally and electrochemically unfavorable, exhibiting unusual voltage fade behavior. Using multiscale diffraction and imaging techniques, we identify lithium-rich nanodomains (LRNDs) as a heterogeneous phase within the layered structure of Co-free SC cathodes. These LRNDs act as critical tipping points, inducing significant chemo-mechanical lattice strain and irreversible structural degradation, which exacerbates the voltage and capacity loss in electrochemical performance. Our findings highlight the considerable challenges of developing Co-free SC cathodes compared to polycrystalline ones and emphasize the need for new strategies to balance the interplay between cost, sustainability, and performance.

In situ formed partially disordered phases as earth-abundant Mn-rich cathode materials

Abstract Earth-abundant cathode materials are urgently needed to enable scaling of the Li-ion industry to multiply terawatt hours of annual production, necessitating reconsideration of how good cathode materials can be obtained. Irreversible transition metal migration and phase transformations in Li-ion cathodes are typically believed to be detrimental because they may trigger voltage hysteresis, poor kinetics and capacity degradation. Here we challenge this conventional consensus by reporting an unusual phase transformation from disordered Li- and Mn-rich rock salts to a new phase (named δ ), which displays partial spinel-like ordering with short coherence length and exhibits high energy density and rate capability. Unlike other Mn-based cathodes, the δ phase exhibits almost no voltage fade upon cycling. We identify the driving force and kinetics of this in situ cathode formation and establish design guidelines for Li- and Mn-rich compositions that combine high energy density, high rate capability and good cyclability, thereby enabling Mn-based energy storage.

Structure and Interface Design Enable Stable Li-Rich Cathode

Li-rich layered-oxide cathodes have the highest theoretical energy density among all the intercalated cathodes, which have attracted intense interests for high energy Li-ion batteries. However, O3-structured layered-oxide cathodes suffer from a low initial Coulombic efficiency (CE), severe voltage fade, and poor cycling stability because of the continuous oxygen release, structural rearrangements due to irreversible transition-metal migration, and serious side reactions between the delithiated cathode and electrolyte. In this work, we report that these challenges are migrated by using a stable O2-structured Li 1.2 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 Mn 0.54 O 2 (O2-LR-NCM) and all-fluorinated electrolyte. The O2-LR-NCM can restrict the transition metals migrating into the Li layer and the in situ formed fluorinated cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on the surface of the O2-LR-NCM from the decomposition of all-fluorinated electrolyte during initial cycles effectively restrains the structure transition, suppresses the O2 release, and thereby safeguards the transition metal redox couples, enabling a highly reversible and stable oxygen redox reaction. O2-LR-NCM in all fluorinated electrolytes achieves a high initial CE of 99.82 % and cycling CE of and cycling CE of >99.9%, high reversible capacity of 278 mAh/g, and high capacity retention of 83.3% after 100 cycles. The synergic design of electrolyte and cathode structure represents a promising direction to stabilize high-energy cathodes.

Tuning Cation (Dis)Order in Cr‐Based Li‐Excess Oxide Cathode Materials to Improve Li+ Transport Properties

Abstract Li‐excess disordered rocksalts (DRXs) hold promise as next‐generation cathodes for Li‐ion batteries due to their high capacity and energy density, along with the potential to eliminate the need for Co and Ni. However, due to their low Li + diffusivity, DRXs need to be pulverized into nanoparticles to achieve high performance. Herein, a new strategy for overcoming this limitation is demonstrated, involving the design of as‐synthesized partially disordered oxides with a structure that lies between ordered layered and fully disordered, exhibiting a varying degree of local (dis)order. This unique structure activates new Li + diffusion channels, improving percolation and transport properties. This strategy allows a large content of Li + to be accessed in material with large, micron‐sized particles through highly reversible Cr 3+/6+ and O redox, yielding a first discharge capacity of 286 mAh g −1 (881 Wh kg −1 ). The Li + percolation network is further improved by substituting Ti with a mixture of multiple metals, which appears to locally decrease the migration barrier through lattice distortion. Proper tuning of the chemical composition, especially the content of metals with empty d orbitals, is established as a crucial factor for controlling the degree of disorder and mitigating voltage fade and hysteresis growth upon cycling.
