Soybean cell enlargement oscillates with a temperature-compensated period length of ca. 24 min

Rate of enlargement of epidermal cells from soybean, when measured at intervals of 1 min using a light microscope equipped with a video measurement system, oscillated with a period length of about 24 min. This oscillation parallels the 24-min periodicity observed for the oxidation of NADH by the external plasma membrane NADH oxidase. The increase in length was not only non-linear, but intervals of rapid increase in area alternated with intervals of rapid decrease in area. The length of the period was temperature compensated, and was approximately the same when measured at 14, 24 and 34 degrees C even though the rate of cell enlargement varied over this same range of temperatures. These observations represent the first demonstration of an oscillatory growth behavior correlated with a biochemical activity where the period length of both is independent of temperature (temperature compensated) as is the hallmark of clock-related biological phenomena.

Lattice Distortion, Polaron Conduction, and Jahn-Teller Effect on teh Magnetoresistance of La(sub 0.7)Ca(sub 0.5)CoO(sub 3) Epitaxial Films

In summary, we have investigated the role of lattice distortion, polaron conduction and Jahn-Teller coupling in the occurrence of the colossal negative magnetoresistance in perovskite oxides. We conclude that larger lattice distortion gives rise to larger zero-field resistivity and larger magnitude of negative magnetoresistance.

Electronic Structure of La(sub 1-x)Ca(sub x)CoO(sub 3) (x = 0, 0.5)

X-ray photoemission measurements of the core levels and valence electronic structure of LaCoO(sub 3) and La(sub 0.5)Ca0.5CoO(sub 3) high quality epitaxial films are presented. Shifts of the core levels and main valence band features are consistent with a doping-induced change in the chemical potential.

Strain Effects on the Structural and Magnetic Properties of La- Ca-Mn-O Epitaxial Films

La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (a = 3.86 angstroms) epitaxial thin films have been grown on SrTiO3 (a = 3.905 angstroms), LaAlO3 (a = 3.79 angstroms), and YAlO3 (a/square root of 2 = 3.66 angstroms, b/square root of 2 = 3.77 angstroms) substrates. The films were analyzed with x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, dc and ac resistivity, and dc magnetization.

Mapping the Piute Mountains, CA with Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS)

Thermal Infrared Multispectral Scanner (TIMS) data were acquired in 1990 over the PiuteMountains, California to evaluate their usefulness for lithologic mapping in an area ofmetamorphosed, structurally complex, igneous and sedimentary rocks. The data were calibrated, atmospherically corrected, and emissivity variations extracted from them. There was an excellentvisual correlation between the units revealed in the TIMS data and the recent mapping in the easternside of the area. It was also possible to correct, improve and extend the recent map. For example, several areas of amphibolite were identified in the TIMS data that had been incorrectly mapped asgranodioritic gneiss, and the presence of a swarm of mafic dikes, of which only a few had previouslybeen identified, was revealed...
