Synthesis of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones: Substrate adsorption configuration-catalytic activity

The production of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones by heterogeneous catalysis has been hindered by the low catalytic activity. Herein, a series of Cu-doped metal oxide catalysts were prepared for the conversion of biomass-derived ketones to aviation biofuel precursors. Solvent-free cyclopentanone conversion via aldol condensation reached 91.1 % over Cu/Al 2 O 3 with 100 % selectivity toward dimer and trimer oxygenated species, all of which are aviation biofuel precursors. This catalyst primarily contains Cu 2 O and Cu nanoparticles which are uniformly dispersed across the Al 2 O 3 surface. From in situ DRIFTS and DFT results, the incorporation of Cu species onto Al 2 O 3 not only increased the diversity of Lewis acidic sites, but also changed the adsorption of C = O groups, which lead to the increased aldol condensation activity of Cu/Al 2 O 3 . In conclusion, this study provides insight on the design of heterogeneous catalysts suitable for the solvent-free synthesis of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones.

Hybrid eigensolvers for nuclear configuration interaction calculations

We examine and compare several iterative methods for solving large-scale eigenvalue problems arising from nuclear structure calculations. In particular, we discuss the possibility of using block Lanczos method, a Chebyshev filtering based subspace iterations and the residual minimization method accelerated by direct inversion of iterative subspace (RMM-DIIS) and describe how these algorithms compare with the standard Lanczos algorithm and the locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient (LOBPCG) algorithm. Although the RMM-DIIS method does not exhibit rapid convergence when the initial approximations to the desired eigenvectors are not sufficiently accurate, it can be effectively combined with either the block Lanczos or the LOBPCG method to yield a hybrid eigensolver that has several desirable properties. We will describe a few practical issues that need to be addressed to make the hybrid solver efficient and robust.

Pentiptycene-based ladder polymers with configurational free volume for enhanced gas separation performance and physical aging resistance

Significance Gas separation membranes are an emerging energy-efficient alternative toward conventional, energy-intensive separation technologies such as cryogenic distillation. Ladder polymers with intrinsic microporosity show exceptional promise toward redefining state-of-the-art gas separation membranes due to their high permeability (throughput) and selectivity (separation efficiency). However, they are typically inhibited by major reductions in permeability over time due to collapsing membrane free volume (open space between polymer chains), forfeiting their greatest asset. This work explores a route toward enhanced aging resistance and overall separation performance by incorporating pentiptycene (an H-shaped scaffold containing five fused arene rings) into ladder-like polymers to incorporate natural, more permanent “micropores” that aren’t susceptible to densification of polymer chains that occurs over time in traditional microporous polymers.

Flexible Operation of Microgrids Through Operator-Configurable Microgrid Controllers

Microgrids are becoming critical assets in power distribution systems. This is partly due to the resiliency and reliability challenges faced by power distribution systems in the last decade and partly due to the increased integration of distributed energy resource assets, such as solar photovoltaic. This increased need for microgrids has created a multitude of needs for microgrid controllers. Most microgrid controllers in the past decade have been uniquely programmed or custom programmed to meet the needs of a specific microgrid. Currently, IEEE standards aim to integrate the needs and capabilities of microgrid controllers under a unified umbrella. But the standards do not recommend necessary or appropriate software development practices for microgrid controllers. In addition, the programmable nature and maintenance of controllers are also key characteristics that fall outside the coverage of the standards. In this paper, we present the best software practices that utility engineers and microgrid operators should consider in the microgrid software platform. This paper can be used as an information document for developing documentation of controller requirements and assessing microgrid controller requirements.

HERO WEC 2024 Hydraulic Configuration Deployment Data

The following submission includes raw and processed data from the in water deployment of NREL's Hydraulic and Electric Reverse Osmosis Wave Energy Converter (HERO WEC), in the form of parquet files, TDMS files, CSV files, bag files and MATLAB workspaces. This dataset was collected in March 2024 at the Jennette's pier test site in North Carolina. This submission includes the following: - Data description document (HERO WEC FY24 Hydraulic Deployment Data Descriptions.doc) - This document includes detailed descriptions of the type of data and how it was processed and/or calculated. - Processed MATLAB workspace - The processed data is provided in the form of a single MATLAB workspace containing data from the full deployment. This workspace contains data from all sensors down sampled to 10 Hz along with all array Value Added Products (VAPs). - MATLAB visualization scripts - The MATLAB workspaces can be visualized using the file "HERO_WEC_2024_Hydraulic_Config_Data_Viewer.m/mlx". The user simply needs to download the processed MATLAB workspaces, specify the desired start and end times and run this file. Both the .m and .mlx file format has been provided depending on the user's preference. - Summary Data - The fully processed data was used to create a summary data set with averages and important calculations performed on 30-minute intervals to align with the intervals of wave resource data reported from nearby CDIP ocean observing buoys located 20km East of Jennette's pier and 40km Northeast of Jennette's pier. The wave resource data provided in this data set is to be used for reference only due the difference in water depth and proximity to shore between the Jennette's pier test site and the locations of the ocean observing buoys. This data is provided in the Summary Data zip folder, which includes this data set in the form of a MATLAB workspace, parquet file, and excel spreadsheet. - Processed Parquet File - The processed data is provided in the form of a single parquet file containing data from all HERO WEC sensors collected during the full deployment. Data in these files has been down sampled to 10 Hz and all array VAPs are included. - Interim Filtered Data - Raw data from each sensor group partitioned into 30-minute parquet files. These files are outputs from an intermediate stage of data processing and contain the raw data with no Quality Control (QC) or calculations performed in a format that is easier to use than the raw data. - Raw Data - Raw, unprocessed data from this deployment can be found in the Raw Data zip folder. This data is provided in the form of TDMS, CSV, and bag files in the original format output by the MODAQ system. - Python Data Processing Script - This links to an NREL public github repository containing the python script used to go from raw data to fully processed parquet files. Additional documentation on how to use this script is included in the github repository. This data set has been developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, operated by Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under Contract No. DE-AC36-08GO28308. Funding provided by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Water Power Technologies Office.

Configuration Management Plan

The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) is located at Technical Area 53 (TA-53) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in Los Alamos, New Mexico. LANSCE is driven by an 800 megaelectronvolt (MeV) proton accelerator that delivered its first beam in 1972. The LANSCE accelerator is unique in that it accelerates both H– (to full energy of 800 MeV) and H+ ions (up to 100 MeV currently but has accelerated high-power H+ beam to 800 MeV in the past) and supports five separate experimental areas that operate simultaneously, with each having different timing and beam current requirements. Many of the LANSCE accelerator front-end components date back to original commissioning in 1972, including the ion sources, Cockcroft-Walton (CW) generators, and the Drift Tube LINAC (DTL), which accelerates the beam up to 100 MeV.

Integer Sequences from Configurations in the Hausdorff Metric Geometry via Edge Covers of Bipartite Graphs

The Hausdorff metric provides a way to measure the distance between nonempty compact sets in $\mathbb{R}^N$, from which we can build a geometry of sets. This geometry is very different than the standard Euclidean geometry and provides many interesting results. In this paper we focus on line segments in this geometry, where pairs of disjoint sets $A$ and $B$ satisfying certain distance conditions have the property that there are exactly $m$ different sets on the line segment $\overline{AB}$ at every distance from $A$, where $m$ can assume many values different than one. We provide new families of sets that generate previously unrecorded integer sequences via these values of $m$ by connecting the values of $m$ to the number of edge coverings of a graph corresponding to the sets $A$ and $B$.

Effect of Diffusion Length in Modeling of Equiaxed Dendritic Solidification under Buoyancy Flow in a Configuration of Hebditch–Hunt Experiment

Modeling of equiaxed solidification is vital for understanding the solidification process of metallic alloys. In this work, an extended literature review is given for the models currently used for equiaxed solidification simulations. Based on this analysis, we present a three-phase multiscale equiaxed solidification model in which some approximations regarding solute transport at microscopic scale are put together in a new way and incorporated into macroscopic transport equations. For the latter, a term relating to the momentum exchange between the two phases is revised, and a modification for the grain packing algorithm is proposed. A modernized model for equiaxed dendrite growth is tested using a case of solidification of Sn-5 wt pct Pb alloy in a parallelepiped cavity that mimics the Hebditch–Hunt experiment. The results obtained using two approaches to calculate diffusion length are presented and compared both with each other and with numerical results from elsewhere. It is demonstrated that diffusion length has a crucial effect on the final segregation pattern.
