Phase Separation, Capillarity, and Odd-Surface Flows in Chiral Active Matter

Active phase separations evade canonical thermodynamic descriptions and have thus challenged our understanding of coexistence and interfacial phenomena. Considerable progress has been made towards a nonequilibrium theoretical description of these traditionally thermodynamic concepts. Spatial parity symmetry is conspicuously assumed in much of this progress, despite the ubiquity of chirality in experimentally realized systems. Here, in this Letter, we derive a theory for the phase coexistence and interfacial fluctuations of a system that microscopically violates spatial parity. We find suppression of the phase separation as chirality is increased as well as the development of steady-state currents tangential to the interface dividing the phases. These odd flows are irrelevant to stationary interfacial properties, with stability, capillary fluctuations, and surface area minimization determined entirely by the capillary surface tension. Using large-scale Brownian dynamics simulations, we find excellent agreement with our theoretical scaling predictions.

Search for the chiral magnetic effect through beam energy dependence of charge separation using event shape selection

High-energy, heavy-ion collisions can create local domains of chirality-imbalanced quarks, reflecting the topological features of quantum chromodynamics. The chiral magnetic effect (CME) predicts an electric charge separation of quarks in such topological domains along the magnetic field ($\vec{B}$) generated by the passing of two high-Z nuclei. Here, we use a correlation observable Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}$ between charged meson pairs to detect the CME-induced charge separation and a novel event shape selection (ESS) method to mitigate the background effects related to elliptic flow (𝑣 2 ). The ESS method classifies events based on the emission pattern of final-state particles and determines Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}_{ESS}$ from the zero-flow limit. We reconstruct the $\vec{B}$ field direction from the spectator nucleons, which minimizes backgrounds unrelated to the collective motion of the system. In this work, we report the measurements of Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}$ and a background indicator Δ⁢𝛾$^{132}$ in Au+Au collisions from the Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Beam Energy Scan phase II and at the top RHIC energy. After background suppression, Δ⁢𝛾$^{132}_{ESS}$ aligns with zero, and Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}_{ESS}$ is reduced to no more than 20% of Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}$. We observe a finite residual charge separation with 2.5⁢𝜎, 3⁢𝜎, and 3.2⁢𝜎 significance in the 20–50% centrality range of Au + Au collisions at 11.5, 14.6, and 19.6 GeV. The results at 17.3 and 27 GeV also show positive values but with a lower significance of 1.3⁢𝜎 and 1.1⁢𝜎, respectively. The corresponding Δ⁢𝛾$^{112}_{ESS}$ values at 7.7, 9.2, and 200 GeV are consistent with zero within uncertainties.

Chiral Teropyrenes: Synthesis, Structure, and Spectroscopic Studies

Abstract We present the inaugural synthesis of a chiral teropyrene achieved through a four‐fold alkyne benzannulation catalyzed by InCl 3 , resulting in good yields. The product underwent thorough characterization using FT‐Raman and FT‐IR spectroscopies, demonstrating a close agreement with calculated spectra. X‐ray crystallographic analysis unveiled a notable twist in the molecule‘s backbone, with an end‐to‐end twist angle of 51°, consistent with computational predictions. Experimentally determined enantiomeric inversion barriers revealed a significant energy barrier of 23 kcal/mol, facilitating the isolation of enantiomers for analysis by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopies. These findings mark significant strides in the synthesis and characterization of chiral teropyrenes, offering insights into their structural and spectroscopic properties.

Strongly Chiral Liquid Crystals in Nanoemulsions

We report Liquid crystal (LC) emulsions represent a class of confined soft matter that exhibit exotic internal organizations and size-dependent properties, including responses to chemical and physical stimuli. Past studies have explored micrometer-scale LC emulsion droplets but little is known about LC ordering within submicrometer-sized droplets. This paper reports experiments and simulations that unmask the consequences of confinement in nanoemulsions on strongly chiral LCs that form bulk cholesteric and blue phases (BPs). A method based on light scattering is developed to characterize phase transitions of LCs within the nanodroplets. For droplets with a radius to the pitch ratio (R v /p 0 ) as small as 2/3, the BP-to-cholesteric transition is substantially suppressed, leading to a threefold increase of the BP temperature interval relative to bulk behavior. Complementary simulations align with experimental findings and reveal the dominant role of chiral elastic energy. For R v /p 0 ≈ to 1/3, a single LC phase forms below the clearing point, with simulations revealing the new configuration to contain a τ -1/2 disclination that extends across the nanodroplet. These findings are discussed in the context of mechanisms by which polymer networks stabilize BPs and, more broadly, for the design of nanoconfined soft matter.

The Rule of Thirds: Controlling Junction Chirality and Polarity in 3D DNA Tiles

The successful self-assembly of tensegrity triangle DNA crystals heralded the ability to programmably construct macroscopic crystalline nanomaterials from rationally-designed, nanoscale components. This 3D DNA tile owes its “tensegrity” nature to its three rotationally-stacked double helices locked together by the tensile winding of a center strand segmented into 7 base pair (bp) inter-junction regions, corresponding to two thirds of a helical turn of DNA. All reported tensegrity triangles to date have employed [Z + 2/3] turn inter-junction segments, yielding right-handed, antiparallel, “J1” junctions. Here, we report here a minimal DNA triangle motif consisting of 3-bp inter-junction segments, or one third of a helical turn. Here, we find that the minimal motif exhibits a reversed morphology with a left-handed tertiary structure mediated by a locally-parallel Holliday junction—the L1 junction. This parallel junction yields a predicted helical groove matching pattern that breaks the pseudosymmetry between tile faces, and the junction morphology further suggests a folding mechanism. We identify a Rule of Thirds by which supramolecular chirality can be programmed through inter-junction DNA segment length. These results underscore the role that global topological forces play in determining local DNA architecture and ultimately point to an under-explored class of self-assembling, chiral nanomaterials for topological processes in biological systems.

A note on chiral trace relations from qq-characters

We study chiral operators in four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories. We provide a general procedure to derive the exact relations among the vacuum expectation values of chiral operators in the Ω-background using the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations of qq-characters. We demonstrate our procedure using several examples. For pure SU(N) gauge theory and SU(N) gauge theory with 2N fundamental hypermultiplets, we verify the relations conjectured previously in the literature. We also briefly discuss the relations in SU(N) linear superconformal quiver gauge theories.

One-loop corrections to the celestial chiral algebra from Koszul Duality

We consider self-dual Yang-Mills theory (SDYM) in four dimensions and its lift to holomorphic BF theory on twistor space. Following the work of Costello and Paquette, we couple SDYM to a quartic axion field, which guarantees associativity of the (extended) celestial chiral algebra at the quantum level. We demonstrate how to reproduce their one-loop quantum deformation to the chiral algebra using Koszul duality.

Interacting chiral form field theories and $$ T\overline{T} $$-like flows in six and higher dimensions

Abstract In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariantp-form theories and corresponding$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. We elucidate space-time covariant properties of the PST formulation by clarifying and making use of its relation to the INZ-type formulation and to a so-called “clone” construction.

Accelerating multigrid with streaming chiral SVD for Wilson fermions in lattice QCD

A modification to the setup algorithm for the multigrid preconditioner of Wilson fermions in lattice QCD is presented. A larger basis of test vectors than that used in regular multigrid is calculated by the smoother and truncated by singular value decomposition on the chiral components of the test vectors. The truncated basis is used to form the prolongation and restriction matrices of the multigrid hierarchy. This modification of the setup method is demonstrated to increase the convergence of linear solvers on an anisotropic lattice with m π ≈ 239 MeV from the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration and an isotropic lattice with m π ≈ 220 MeV from the MILC Collaboration. The lattice volume dependence of the method is also examined. Increasing the number of test vectors improves speedup up to a point, but storing these vectors becomes impossible in limited memory resources such as GPUs. To address storage cost, we implement a streaming singular value decomposition of the basis of test vectors on the chiral components and demonstrate a decrease in the number of fine level iterations by a factor of 1.7 for m q ≈ m crit

A new-old approach to composite scalars with chiral fermion constituents

We develop a dynamical, Lorentz invariant theory of composite scalars in configuration space consisting of chiral fermions, interacting by the perturbative exchange of a massive “gluon” of coupling g 0 and mass M 0 2 (the coloron model). The formalism is inspired by, but goes beyond, old ideas of Yukawa and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It yields a non-pointlike internal wave-function of the bound state, ϕ ( r ) , which satisfies a Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon (SKG) equation with eigenvalue μ 2 . For super-critical coupling, g 0 2 > g 0 c 2 , we have μ 2 < 0 leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The binding of chiral fermions is semiclassical, not loop-level as in NJL. The mass scale is determined by the interaction as in NJL. We mainly focus on the short-distance, large M 0 2 limit, yielding an NJL pointlike interaction, but the bound state internal wave-function, ϕ ( r → ) , remains spatially extended and dilutes ϕ ( 0 ) . This leads to power-law suppression of the induced Yukawa and quartic couplings and requires radically less fine-tuning of a hierarchy than does the NJL model. We include a discussion of loop corrections of the theory. A realistic top condensation model appears possible.

Chiral three-nucleon force and continuum for dripline nuclei and beyond

Three-nucleon force and continuum play important roles in reproducing the properties of atomic nuclei around driplines. Therefore it is valuable to build up a theoretical framework where both effects can be taken into account to solve the nuclear Schrödinger equation. To this end, in this letter, we have expressed the chiral three-nucleon force within the continuum Berggren representation, so that bound, resonant and continuum states can be treated on an equal footing in the complex-momentum space. To reduce the model dimension and computational cost, the three-nucleon force is truncated at the normal-ordered two-body level and limited in the sd-shell model space, with the residual three-body term being neglected. We choose neutron-rich oxygen isotopes as the test ground because they have been well studied experimentally, with the neutron dripline determined. The calculations have been carried out within the Gamow shell model. The quality of our results in reproducing the properties of oxygen isotopes around the neutron dripline shows the relevance of the interplay between three-nucleon force and the coupling to continuum states. We also analyze the role played by the chiral three-nucleon force, by dissecting the contributions of the 2π exchange, 1π exchange and contact terms.

Impact of globally spin-aligned vector mesons on the search for the chiral magnetic effect in heavy-ion collisions

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, the chiral magnetic effect (CME) is predicted to arise from the interplay between the chirality imbalance of quarks in the nuclear medium and the intense magnetic field, and will cause a charge separation along the magnetic field direction. While the search for the CME is still ongoing in experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the CME-sensitive observables need to be scrutinized to exclude the non-CME contributions. In this work, we examine the influence of globally spin-aligned ρ mesons on the γ 112 correlator, the R Ψ 2 (ΔS) correlator, and the signed balance functions, via a toy model and a multiphase transport model (AMPT). The global spin alignment of vector mesons could originate from non-CME mechanisms in heavy-ion collisions, and is characterized by the 00-component of the spin density matrix, ρ 00 . Here, we find that the CME observables show similar dependence on ρ 00 , and could receive a positive (negative) contribution from ρ-decay pions, if the ρ 00 of ρ mesons is larger (smaller) than 1/3. Since pions are the most abundant particles in such collisions, the ρ 00 measurements for ρ mesons become crucial to the interpretation of the CME data.

Cascading from $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in adjoint QCD

We argue that adjoint QCD in 3 + 1 dimensions, with any SU(N) gauge group and two Weyl fermion flavors (i.e. one adjoint Dirac fermion), confines and spontaneously breaks its chiral symmetries via the condensation of a fermion bilinear. We flow to this theory from pure $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 SUSY Yang–Mills theory with the same gauge group, by giving a SUSY-breaking mass M to the scalars in the $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 vector multiplet. This flow can be analyzed rigorously at small M, where it leads to a deconfined vacuum at the origin of the $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 Coulomb branch. The analysis can be extended to all M using an Abelian dual description that arises from the N multi-monopole points of the $\mathscr{N}$ = 2 theory. At each such point, there are N −1 hypermultiplet Higgs fields h$^{i=1,2}_m$, which are SU(2) R doublets. We provide a detailed study of the phase diagram as a function of M, by analyzing the semi-classical phases of the dual using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques. The result is a cascade of first-order phase transitions, along which the Higgs fields h i m successively turn on, and which interpolates between the Coulomb branch at small M, where all h$^{i}_m$ = 0, and a maximal Higgs branch, where all h$^{i}_m$ ≠ 0, at sufficiently large M. We show that this maximal Higgs branch precisely matches the confining and chiral symmetry breaking phase of two-flavor adjoint QCD, including its broken and unbroken symmetries, its massless spectrum, and the expected large-N scaling of various observables. The spontaneous breaking pattern SU(2) R → U(1) R , consistent with the Vafa–Witten theorem, is ensured by an intricate alignment mechanism for the h$^{i}_m$ in the dual, and leads to a CP 1 sigma model of increasing radius along the cascade.

Encapsulation of Ba in InSb Framework Introduces Chirality in Clathrate-Like BaIn 4 Sb 4

The discovery of Zintl compounds remains a powerful strategy for identifying materials with tunable electronic and thermal transport properties. During a concerted search for new inorganic clathrates with In–Sb frameworks, we discovered BaIn 4 Sb 4 . The composition of this phase deviates from that expected for a type-I clathrate with tetrahedral coordination of all In and Sb atoms (Ba 8 In 31 Sb 15 ). Instead, in the chiral structure of BaIn 4 Sb 4 (space group P 3 1 21, No. 152), a part of the In atoms have a trigonal planar coordination of 1In + 2Sb, forming Sb 2 –In–In–Sb 2 nonplanar fragments isostructural to diborane(4) B 2 H 4 with D 2 d symmetry. Ba atoms are located inside 16-vertex In 8 Sb 8 polyhedra, which share vertices and edges to form a chiral framework around the 3 1 screw axes. The title compound is electron-balanced, [Ba 2+ ][In 2+ ] 2 [In 3+ ] 2 [Sb3–] 4 , which was confirmed by characterization of the charge and heat transport properties. BaIn 4 Sb 4 exhibits a low thermal conductivity and high Seebeck coefficient, suggesting its untapped potential for thermoelectric applications. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that chemical doping may enhance carrier concentration and improve the originally low electrical conductivity, thus enhancing thermoelectric performance.

IrGe 4 : A Predicted Weyl-Metal with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Polycrystalline IrGe4 was synthesized by annealing elements at 800 °C for 240 h, and the composition was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. IrGe 4 adopts a chiral crystal structure (space group P3 1 21) instead of a polar crystal structure (P3 1 ), which was corroborated by the convergent-beam electron diffraction and Rietveld refinements using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure features layers of IrGe 8 polyhedra along the b axis, and the layers are connected by edge- and corner-sharing. Each layer consists of corner-shared [Ir 3 Ge 20 ] trimers, which are formed by three IrGe 8 polyhedra connected by edge-sharing. Temperature-dependent resistivity indicates metallic behavior. The magnetoresistance increases with increasing applied magnetic field, and the nonsaturating magnetoresistance reaches 11.5% at 9 T and 10 K. The Hall resistivity suggests that holes are the majority carrier type, with a carrier concentration of 4.02 × 10 21 cm –3 at 300 K. In conclusion, electronic band structures calculated by density functional theory reveal a Weyl point with a chiral charge of +3 above the Fermi level.

Hyperspectral Detection of the Fluorescence Shift between Chirality-Sorted Empty and Water-Filled Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Enantiomers

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have extraordinary electronic and optical properties that depend strongly on their exact chiral structure and their interaction with their inner and outer environment. The fluorescence (PL) of semiconducting SWCNTs, for instance, will shift depending on the molecules with which the SWCNT’s hollow core is filled. These interaction-induced shifts are challenging to resolve on the ensemble level in samples containing a mixture of different filling contents due to the relatively large inhomogeneous line width of the ensemble SWCNT PL compared to the size of these shifts. To circumvent this inhomogeneous broadening, single-tube spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging are often applied, which until now required time-consuming statistical studies. Here, we present hyperspectral PL microscopy combined with automated SWCNT segmenting based on either principal component analysis or a convolutional neural network, capable of both spatially and spectrally resolving the PL along the length of many individual SWCNTs at the same time and automatically fitting peak positions and line widths of individual SWCNTs. The methodology is demonstrated by accurately determining the emission shifts and line widths of thousands of left- and right-handed empty and water-filled SWCNTs coated with a chiral surfactant, resulting in four statistical distributions which cannot be resolved in ensemble spectroscopy of unsorted samples. The results demonstrate a robust method to quickly probe ensemble properties with single-enantiomer spectral resolution. Moreover, it promises to be an absolute quantitative method to characterize the relative abundances of SWCNTs with different handedness or filling content in macroscopic samples, simply by counting individual species.

Enantioselective Allenoate-Claisen Rearrangement Using Chiral Phosphate Catalysts

Herein we report the first highly enantioselective allenoate-Claisen rearrangement using doubly axially chiral phosphate sodium salts as catalysts. This synthetic method provides access to β-amino acid derivatives with vicinal stereocenters in up to 95% ee. We also investigated the mechanism of enantioinduction by transition state (TS) computations with DFT as well as statistical modeling of the relationship between selectivity and the molecular features of both the catalyst and substrate. The mutual interactions of charge-separated regions in both the zwitterionic intermediate generated by reaction of an amine to the allenoate and the Na + -salt of the chiral phosphate leads to an orientation of the TS in the catalytic pocket that maximizes favorable noncovalent interactions. Crucial arene-arene interactions at the periphery of the catalyst lead to a differentiation of the TS diastereomers. Finally, these interactions were interrogated using DFT calculations and validated through statistical modeling of parameters describing noncovalent interactions.

Generation of Axially Chiral Fluoroallenes through a Copper-Catalyzed Enantioselective β-Fluoride Elimination

Herein we report the copper-catalyzed silylation of propargylic difluorides to generate axially chiral, tetrasubstituted monofluoroallenes in both good yields (27 examples >80%) and enantioselectivities (82-98% ee). Compared to previously reported synthetic routes to axially chiral allenes (ACAs) from prochiral substrates, a mechanistically distinct reaction has been developed: the enantiodiscrimination between enantiotopic fluorides to set an axial stereocenter. DFT calculations and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) suggest that β-fluoride elimination from an alkenyl copper intermediate likely proceeds through a syn -β-fluoride elimination pathway rather than an anti -elimination pathway. The effects of the C1-symmetric Josiphos-derived ligand on reactivity and enantioselectivity were investigated. Not only does this report showcase that alkenyl copper species (like their alkyl counterparts) can undergo β-fluoride elimination, but this elimination can be achieved in an enantioselective fashion.
