Improved Cost Estimates to Boost Pumped Storage Hydropower Construction

Pumped storage hydropower is often overlooked in future grid planning efforts, in part because the cost to build a new facility is not always clear. That's why the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), along with the U.S. Department of Energy's Water Power Technologies Office, is developing improved cost estimates and cost models to reduce that uncertainty and give developers the data they need to decide where and when to construct new PSH facilities to support the country's evolving energy grid.

Piezoelectric-triboelectric heel charger to generate electricity from locomotion using level mechanism and mechanical SSHI boosting circuit

The disclosure provides an electricity generating insert for a piece of footwear, the insert can be removably placed in the heel portion, e.g. under the insole. The insert comprises a multilayer piezoelectric stack that alternatively flexes under the compression-decompression that occurs during locomotion, which flexing causes friction in the stack to generate electricity capable of charging electronic devices and the like, e.g. via a port on the footwear.

Boosting the Strength and Electrical Conductivity of Aluminum Alloys

It is common practice to use pure copper as the material of choice in applications requiring adequate strength and high electrical conductivity (EC). However, the overwhelming increase in the cost and worldwide demand for copper is becoming a major concern. As the move towards electrification throughout the world is occurring, so is a parallel move to make aluminum (Al) and Al alloys suitable as a replacement for copper. To make this goal a reality, exploration into enhancements in the strength and EC of high conductivity Al alloys is necessary. This study compiles strength and EC data for current Al powder metallurgy (PM) alloys to better understand existing data and target future research. Also highlighted are reviews of completed research projects, including studies relating to liquid metallurgy, by industry professionals and academia, noting both shortcomings and successes.

Intelligent Surrogate Model Development: Boosting Computational Efficiency for Autonomous Control of Advanced Reactors

Advanced reactors promise enhanced safety, greater efficiency, and waste reductions. To fully realize these benefits, it is crucial to address the need for autonomous or semi-autonomous control systems that require fewer operators. This research primarily supports the MARVEL autonomous control system, which requires real-time operation. However, the current RELAP5 reactor thermal hydraulic transient simulation is excessively time-consuming. Therefore, this study aims to leverage deep learning techniques to develop a surrogate model, providing a more efficient and accurate alternative for real-time performance. The model was trained using a combination of one-timestep prediction and scheduled sampling. It was then used for recursive prediction of the reactor state. This developed surrogate model significantly improves computational efficiency, achieving a 12 times acceleration.

Development of a Supercharged Octane Number and a Supercharged Octane Index

Gasoline knock resistance is characterized by the Research and Motor Octane Number (RON and MON), which are rated on the CFR octane rating engine at naturally aspirated conditions. However, modern automotive downsized boosted spark ignition (SI) engines generally operate at higher cylinder pressures and lower temperatures relative to the RON and MON tests. Using the naturally aspirated RON and MON ratings, the octane index (OI) characterizes the knock resistance of gasolines under boosted operation by linearly extrapolating into boosted “beyond RON” conditions via RON, MON, and a linear regression K factor. Using OI solely based on naturally aspirated RON and MON tests to extrapolate into boosted conditions can lead to significant errors in predicting boosted knock resistance between gasolines due to non-linear changes in autoignition and knocking characteristics with increasing pressure conditions. Here, a new “Supercharged Octane Number” (SON) method was developed on the CFR engine at increased intake pressures, which improved the correlation to boosted knock-limited automotive SI engine data over RON for several surrogate fuels and gasolines, including five “Co-Optima” RON 98 fuels and an E10 regular grade gasoline. Furthermore, the conventional OI was extended to a newly introduced Supercharged Octane Index (OI S ) based on SON and RON, which significantly improved the correlation to fuel knock resistance measurements from modern boosted SI engine knock-limited spark advance tests. This demonstrated the first proof of concept of a SON and OI S to better characterize a fuel’s knock resistance in modern boosted SI engines.

Comprehensive Efficiency Analysis of Current Source Inverter Based SPM Machine Drive System for Traction Applications

A current-source inverter (CSI) has the natural capability of boosting the output voltage which is a notable advantage over voltage source inverter (VSI) in traction drive applications. This paper investigates the voltage boosting feature of the CSI to improve the overall efficiency of the CSI-based surface permanent magnet (SPM) machine drive system in the constant power region. The effects of the boost function on the total system losses, including the machine copper loss, core loss, and magnet loss, as well as the device conduction and switching loss in the CSI and dc/dc converter, are described using analytical models. The operating characteristics of the machine and CSI are validated by 2-D finite-element analysis (FEA) and simulations. Based on the loss model, the effects of the modulation index on the overall drive system losses and power factor have been analyzed. A genetic algorithm has been used to optimize the CSI's boost ratio, demonstrating that the drive system efficiency can be increased by 1% to 2.5% along the constant-power regime envelope by using the boost function.

Effect of Thomas Rotation on the Lorentz Transformation of Electromagnetic fields

A relativistic particle undergoing successive boosts which are non collinear will experience a rotation of its coordinate axes with respect to the boosted frame. This rotation of coordinate axes is caused by a relativistic phenomenon called Thomas Rotation. We assess the importance of Thomas rotation in the calculation of physical quantities like electromagnetic fields in the relativistic regime. We calculate the electromagnetic field tensor for general three dimensional successive boosts in the particle’s rest frame as well as the laboratory frame. We then compare the electromagnetic field tensors obtained by a direct boost β δβ → + → and successive boosts β → and Δβ → and check their consistency with Thomas rotation. This framework might be important to situations such as the calculation of frequency shifts for relativistic spin1/2 particles undergoing Larmor precession in electromagnetic fields with small field non-uniformities.

Optimizing energetic light dark matter searches in dark matter and neutrino experiments

Neutrino and dark matter experiments with large-volume ($ \underset{\sim }{>} $,2 1 ton) detectors can provide excellent sensitivity to signals induced by energetic light dark matter coming from the present universe. Taking boosted dark matter as a concrete example of energetic light dark matter, we scrutinize two representative search channels, electron scattering and proton scattering including deep inelastic scattering processes, in the context of elastic and inelastic boosted dark matter, in a completely detector-independent manner. In this work, a dark gauge boson is adopted as the particle to mediate the interactions between the Standard Model particles and boosted dark matter. We find that the signal sensitivity of the two channels highly depends on the (mass-)parameter region to probe, so search strategies and channels should be designed sensibly especially at the earlier stage of experiments. In particular, the contribution from the boosted-dark-matter-initiated deep inelastic scattering can be subleading (important) compared to the quasi-elastic proton scattering, if the mass of the mediator is below (above) $ \mathcal{O} $(GeV). We demonstrate how to practically perform searches and relevant analyses, employing example detectors such as DarkSide-20k, DUNE, Hyper-Kamiokande, and DeepCore, with their respective detector specifications taken into consideration. For other potential detectors we provide a summary table, collecting relevant information, from which similar studies can be fulfilled readily.
