Inorganic semiconductor materials are best known for their superior physical properties, as well as their structural rigidity and stability. However, the poor solubility and solution-processability of these covalently bonded network structures has long been a serious drawback that limits their use in many important applications. Here, we present a unique and general approach to synthesize robust, solution-processable, and highly luminescent hybrid materials built on periodic and infinite inorganic modules. Structure analysis confirms that all compounds are composed of one-dimensional anionic chains of copper iodide (Cu m I m+2 2- ) coordinated to cationic organic ligands via Cu-N bonds. The choice of ligands plays an important role in the coordination mode (μ 1 -MC or μ 2 -DC) and Cu-N bond strength. Greatly suppressed nonradiative decay is achieved for the μ 2 -DC structures. Record high quantum yields of 85% (λ ex = 360 nm) and 76% (λ ex = 450 nm) are obtained for an orange-emitting 1D-Cu 4 I 6 (L 6 ). Temperature dependent PL measurements suggest that both phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence contribute to the emission of these 1D-AIO compounds, and that the extent of nonradiative decay of the μ 2 -DC structures is much less than that of the μ1 -DC structures. More significantly, all compounds are remarkably soluble in polar aprotic solvents, distinctly different from previously reported CuI based hybrid materials made of charge-neutral Cu m X m (X = Cl, Br, I), which are totally insoluble in all common solvents. Finally, the greatly enhanced solubility is a result of incorporation of ionic bonds into extended covalent/coordinate network structures, making it possible to fabricate large scale thin films by solution processes

ABSTRACT We present the results of a search for stellar flares from stars neighbouring the target sources in the Kepler short cadence data. These flares have been discarded as contaminants in previous surveys and therefore provide an unexplored resource of flare events, in particular high-energy events from faint stars. We have measured M dwarf flare energies up to 1.5 × 1035 erg, pushing the limit for flare energies measured using Kepler data. We have used our sample to study the flaring activity of wide binaries, finding that the lower mass counterpart in a wide binary flares more often at a given energy. Of the 4430 flares detected in our original search, 298 came from a neighbouring star, a rate of 6.7 ± 0.4 per cent for the Kepler short cadence light curves. We have used our sample to estimate a 5.8 ± 0.1 per cent rate of false positive flare events in studies using Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite short cadence data.

The results of machine learning models can often be difficult to interpret, especially for domain experts. Audio Explorer, the winning entry of the 2018 VAST Challenge, is an interactive data exploration tool that effectively communicates machine learning results, using coordinated geospatial, temporal, and auditory visualizations to promote information discovery.
Ignition delay times from undiluted mixtures of natural gas (NG)/H 2 /Air and NG/NH 3 /Air were measured using a high-pressure shock tube at the University of Central Florida. The combustion temperatures were experimentally tested between 1000 and 1500 K near a constant pressure of 25 bar. As mentioned, mixtures were kept undiluted to replicate the same chemistry pathways seen in gas turbine combustion chambers. Recorded combustion pressures exceeded 200 bar due to the large energy release, hence why these were performed at the high-pressure shock tube facility. The data are compared to the predictions of the NUIGMech 1.1 mechanism for chemical kinetic model validation and refinement. An exceptional agreement was shown for stoichiometric conditions in all cases but strayed at lean and rich equivalence ratios, especially in the lower temperature regime of H 2 addition and all temperature ranges of the baseline NG mixture. Hydrogen addition also decreased ignition delay times by nearly 90%, while NH 3 fuel addition made no noticeable difference in ignition time. NG/NH 3 exhibited similar chemistry to pure NG under the same conditions, which is shown in a sensitivity analysis. Here, the reaction CH 3 + O 2 = CH 3 O + O is identified and suggested as a possible modification target to improve model performance. Increasing the robustness of chemical kinetic models via experimental validation will directly aid in designing next-generation combustion chambers for use in gas turbines, which in turn will greatly lower global emissions and reduce greenhouse effects.
An approach that combines experimental and numerical analyses has been implemented to characterize the fundamentals of flashback events and flame-holding phenomena during high-hydrogen combustion in a jet-in-crossflow (JICF) configuration. Such flame dynamics are visualized experimentally using nanosecond (ns)-based hydroxyl planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF) and chemiluminescence diagnostics techniques. The JICF burner has an optically accessible premixing tube allowing the optical diagnostics. The testing was conducted for varied premixer velocities (V) and equivalence ratio (ϕ) for 90–100% (H 2 , by mole) H 2 /CH 4 reactant mixtures at atmospheric temperature and pressure conditions. Two distinct flashback events were identified – conventional rich flashback and lean flashback, recorded while increasing ϕ and decreasing ϕ, respectively. The cause of lean flashback was attributed to lower momentum flux ratio which bends the jet sharply, closer toward the injection plane. The mean OH-PLIF images characterized the flame-holding behavior, where the flame was found to be stabilized on the leeward side only or on both windward and leeward sides as a lifted flame near the fuel port. A large eddy simulation (LES) with detailed chemistry combustion modeling approach was implemented along with an OH* submechanism, and it showed qualitative agreement with the integrated line-of-sight chemiluminescence results as well as the planar OH-PLIF measurements.
