Optical Spin Polarization of a Narrow‐Linewidth Electron‐Spin Qubit in a Chromophore/Stable‐Radical System

Abstract Photoexcited organic chromophores appended to stable radicals can serve as qubit and/or qudit candidates for quantum information applications. 1,6,7,12‐Tetra‐(4‐ tert ‐butylphenoxy)‐perylene‐3,4 : 9,10‐bis(dicarboximide) (tpPDI) linked to a partially deuterated α,γ‐bisdiphenylene‐β‐phenylallyl radical (BDPA‐ d 16 ) was synthesized and characterized by time‐resolved optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Photoexcitation of tpPDI‐BDPA‐ d 16 results in ultrafast radical‐enhanced intersystem crossing to produce a quartet state ( Q ) followed by formation of a spin‐polarized doublet ground state ( D 0 ). Pulse‐EPR experiments confirmed the spin multiplicity of Q and yielded coherence times of T m =2.1±0.1 μs and 2.8±0.2 μs for Q and D 0 , respectively. BDPA‐ d 16 eliminates the dominant 1 H hyperfine couplings, resulting in a single narrow line for both the Q and D 0 states, which enhances the spectral resolution needed for good qubit addressability.

Crystal Engineering of Two Light and Pressure Responsive Physisorbents

Abstract An emerging strategy in the design of efficient gas storage technologies is the development of stimuli‐responsive physisorbents which undergo transformations in response to a particular stimulus, such as pressure, heat or light. Herein, we report two isostructural light modulated adsorbents (LMAs) containing bis‐3‐thienylcyclopentene (BTCP), LMA‐1 [Cd(BTCP)(DPT) 2 ] (DPT=2,5‐diphenylbenzene‐1,4‐dicarboxylate) and LMA‐2 [Cd(BTCP)(FDPT) 2 ] (FDPT=5‐fluoro‐2,diphenylbenzene‐1,4‐dicarboxylate). Both LMAs undergo pressure induced switching transformations from non‐porous to porous via adsorption of N 2 , CO 2 and C 2 H 2 . LMA‐1 exhibited multi‐step adsorption while LMA‐2 showed a single‐step adsorption isotherm. The light responsive nature of the BTPC ligand in both frameworks was exploited with irradiation of LMA‐1 resulting in a 55 % maximum reduction of CO 2 uptake at 298 K. This study reports the first example of a switching sorbent (closed to open) that can be further modulated by light.

Reaction Chemistry at Discrete Organometallic Fragments on Black Phosphorus

Abstract Black phosphorus (bP) is a two‐dimensional van der Waals material unique in its potential to serve as a support for single‐site catalysts due to its similarity to molecular phosphines, ligands quintessential in homogeneous catalysis. However, there is a scarcity of synthetic methods to install single metal centers on the bP lattice. Here, we demonstrate the functionalization of bP nanosheets with molecular Re and Mo complexes. A suite of characterization techniques, including infrared, X‐ray photoelectron and X‐ray absorption spectroscopy as well as scanning transmission electron microscopy corroborate that the functionalized nanosheets contain a high density of discrete metal centers directly bound to the bP surface. Moreover, the supported metal centers are chemically accessible and can undergo ligand exchange transformations without detaching from the surface. The steric and electronic properties of bP as a ligand are estimated with respect to molecular phosphines. Sterically, bP resembles tri(tolyl)phosphine when monodentate to a metal center, and bis(diphenylphosphino)propane when bidentate, whereas electronically bP is a σ‐donor as strong as a trialkyl phosphine. This work is foundational in elucidating the nature of black phosphorus as a ligand and underscores the viability of using bP as a basis for single‐site catalysts.

Heterogeneous Fe‐N‐C Cocatalyst for Hydroquinone Oxidation Enables Aerobic Oxidation of Primary Alcohols to Aldehydes

Abstract Benzoquinone (BQ) is commonly used as a cocatalyst in multi‐component catalyst systems for aerobic oxidation of organic molecules. Such methods often proceed by a redox cascade in which a secondary catalyst supports aerobic oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) to BQ. The present study shows that a commercially available non‐precious metal heterogeneous catalyst, PAJ‐Fe‐N‐C, is much more efficient than established homogeneous catalysts for aerobic oxidation of HQ to BQ, and this improved reactivity is crucial to support aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes with the homogeneous iridium catalyst, [Ir(trop 2 DAD]OTf (trop 2 DAD= N , N ‐bis(5‐ H ‐dibenzo[ a , d ]cycloheptene‐5‐yl)‐1,4‐diazabuta‐1,3‐diene). The combination of this heterogeneous/homogeneous catalyst system operates with Ir catalyst loadings as low as 0.05 mol % and turnover frequencies ≥350 h −1 .

A Dicopper Platform that Stabilizes the Formation of Pentanuclear Coinage Metal Hydride Complexes

Abstract Reduction of a dicopper(II) bis(hydroxide) complex with silanes in the presence of external copper or silver cations results in the formation of multinuclear hydride clusters, which were characterized by a variety of NMR spectroscopic experiments and X‐ray crystallography. In particular, the pentanuclear complexes adopt an unusual planar “bow tie” configuration. The copper hydride complexes are efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of formic acid to H 2 and CO 2 .

Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells Enabled by Low‐Cost Industrial Organic Pigment Coating

Abstract Surface passivation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) using a low‐cost industrial organic pigment quinacridone (QA) is presented. The procedure involves solution processing a soluble derivative of QA, N , N ‐bis(tert‐butyloxycarbonyl)‐quinacridone (TBOC‐QA), followed by thermal annealing to convert TBOC‐QA into insoluble QA. With halide perovskite thin films coated by QA, PSCs based on methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) showed significantly improved performance with remarkable stability. A PCE of 21.1 % was achieved, which is much higher than 18.9 % recorded for the unmodified devices. The QA coating with exceptional insolubility and hydrophobicity also led to greatly enhanced contact angle from 35.6° for the pristine MAPbI 3 thin films to 77.2° for QA coated MAPbI 3 thin films. The stability of QA passivated MAPbI 3 perovskite thin films and PSCs were significantly enhanced, retaining about 90 % of the initial efficiencies after more than 1000 hours storage under ambient conditions.

Few‐Unit‐Cell MFI Zeolite Synthesized using a Simple Di‐quaternary Ammonium Structure‐Directing Agent

Abstract Synthesis of a pentasil‐type zeolite with ultra‐small few‐unit‐cell crystalline domains, which we call FDP (few‐unit‐cell crystalline domain pentasil), is reported. FDP is made using bis‐1,5(tributyl ammonium) pentamethylene cations as structure directing agent (SDA). This di‐quaternary ammonium SDA combines butyl ammonium, in place of the one commonly used for MFI synthesis, propyl ammonium, and a five‐carbon nitrogen‐connecting chain, in place of the six‐carbon connecting chain SDAs that are known to fit well within the MFI pores. X‐ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy imaging of FDP indicate ca. 10 nm crystalline domains organized in hierarchical micro‐/meso‐porous aggregates exhibiting mesoscopic order with an aggregate particle size up to ca. 5 μm. Al and Sn can be incorporated into the FDP zeolite framework to produce active and selective methanol‐to‐hydrocarbon and glucose isomerization catalysts, respectively.

A Molecular Compound for Highly Selective Purification of Ethylene

Purification of C 2 H 4 from an C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixture is one of the most challenging separation processes, which is achieved mainly through energy-intensive, cryogenic distillation in industry. Sustainable, non-distillation methods are highly desired as alternatives. We discovered that the fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported copper(I) complex {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 has features very desirable in an olefin–paraffin separation material. It binds ethylene exclusively over ethane generating [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ). This molecular compound exhibits extremely high and record ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 gas separation selectivity, affording high purity (>99.5 %) ethylene that can be readily desorbed from separation columns. In-situ PXRD provides a “live” picture of the reversible conversion between [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) and the ethylene-free sorbent in the solid-state, driven by the presence or removal of C 2 H 4 . As a result, molecular structures of trinuclear {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 and mononuclear [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) are also presented.

A Heterogeneous Palladium Catalyst for the Polymerization of Olefins Prepared by Halide Abstraction Using Surface R 3 Si + Species

The silylium-like surface species [ i Pr 3 Si][(R F O) 3 Al-OSi≡)] activates (N^N)Pd(CH 3 )Cl (N^N=Ar-N=CMeMeC=N-Ar, Ar=2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylbenzene) by chloride ion abstraction to form [(N^N)Pd-CH 3 ][(R F O) 3 Al-OSi≡)] ( 1 ). A combination of FTIR, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and reactions with CO or vinyl chloride establish that 1 shows similar reactivity patterns as (N^N)Pd(CH 3 )Cl activated with Na[B(Ar F ) 4 ]. Multinuclear 13 C{ 27 Al} RESPDOR and 1 H{ 19 F} S-REDOR experiments are consistent with a weakly coordinated ion-pair between (N^N)Pd-CH 3 + and [(R F O) 3 Al-OSi≡)]. 1 catalyzes the polymerization of ethylene with similar activities as [(N^N)Pd-CH 3 ] + in solution and incorporates up to 0.4% methyl acrylate in copolymerization reactions. 1 produces polymers with significantly higher molecular weight than the solution catalyst, and generates the highest molecular weight polymers currently reported in copolymerization reactions of ethylene and methylacrylate.

Semiconducting Copolymers with Naphthalene Imide/Amide π-Conjugated Units: Synthesis, Crystallography, and Systematic Structure-Property-Mobility Correlations

Here, in a series of n-type semiconducting naphthalene tetracarboxydiimide (NDI)-dithiophene (T2) copolymers, structural and electronic properties trends are systematically evaluated as the number of NDI carbonyl groups is reduced from 4 in NDI to 3 in NBL (1-amino-4,5-8-naphthalene-tricarboxylic acid-1,8-lactam-4,5-imide) to 2 in NBA (naphthalene-bis(4,8-diamino-1,5-dicarboxyl)-amide). As the NDI-T2 backbone torsional angle falls the LUMO energy rises. However, the thienyl attachment regiochemistry also plays an important role in less symmetric NBL and NBA. Electron mobility is greatest for N2200 (0.17 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ) followed by PNBL-3,8-T2 and PNBA-2,6-T2 (0.11 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ), 0.02 cm 2 V –1 s –1 in PNBL-4,8-T2, and negligible in PNBA-3,7-T2. Charge transport reflects a delicate balance between electronic backbone communication (optimum for N2200 and PNBL-4,8-T2), backbone planarity (optimum for PNBA-2,6-T2 and PNBL-3,8-T2), LUMO energy (optimum for N2200), π–π stacking distance (optimum for PNBA-2,6-T2), and film crystallinity (optimum for PNBA-2,6-T2 and N2200). These results offer generalizable insight into semiconducting copolymer design.

Iron‐Catalyzed Intermolecular C−H Amination Assisted by an Isolated Iron‐Imido Radical Intermediate

Here we report the use of a base metal complex [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe(OEt 2 )] (1-OEt 2 ) ( tBu pyrpyrr 2 2− =3,5-tBu 2 -bis(pyrrolyl)pyridine) as a catalyst for intermolecular amination of C sp3 −H bonds of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (2 a) using 2,4,6-trimethyl phenyl azide (3 a) as the nitrene source. The reaction is complete within one hour at 80 °C using as low as 2 mol % 1-OEt 2 with control in selectivity for single C−H amination versus double C−H amination. Catalytic C−H amination reactions can be extended to other substrates such as cyclohexadiene and xanthene derivatives and can tolerate a variety of aryl azides having methyl groups in both ortho positions. Under stoichiometric conditions the imido radical species [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe{=N(2,6-Me 2 -4-tBu-C 6 H 2 )] (1-imido) can be isolated in 56 % yield, and spectroscopic, magnetometric, and computational studies confirmed it to be an S = 1 Fe IV complex. Complex 1-imido reacts with 2 a to produce the ferrous aniline adduct [( tBu pyrpyrr 2 )Fe{NH(2,6-Me 2 -4-tBu-C 6 H 2 )(C 14 H 11 )}] (1-aniline) in 45 % yield. Lastly, it was found that complexes 1-imido and 1-aniline are both competent intermediates in catalytic intermolecular C−H amination.

Aggregation of One–Dimensional Wires: The Case of Long Oligoynes

We show an unexpected aggregation phenomenon of a long oligoyne (Py[16]) with 16 contiguous triple bonds and endcapped with bulky 3,5-bi(3,5-bis-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine groups. Aggregation of 1D π-conjugated oligoyne chains is rare given the minimal π–π intermolecular interactions as well as its flexibility that works against self-assembly. In dilute solutions, the reversible aggregation of Py[16] initiates at low temperature in the range of 140–180 K, and is not observed for shorter oligoynes in this series. Cryogenic UV/Vis electronic absorption spectra and vibrational Raman spectra with different laser wavelength lines tuning from in-resonance to off-resonance conditions have been used to extract the vibrational features characterizing the monomer and aggregate species. Theoretical calculations complement the spectroscopic findings.

Mastering the Copolymerization Behavior of Ethyl Cyanoacrylate as Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium‐metal Battery Application

Polymers with strong electron-withdrawing groups (e.g., cyano-containing polymers) are attractive for a wide range of applications due to their high dielectric constant and outstanding electrochemical stability. However, the polymerization of such monomers is difficult to control with trace of water affording instant reactions, and copolymerization with other monomers without using strong acid is even more challenging. The present study demonstrates a facile approach enabling efficient and controllable copolymerization of ethyl cyanoacrylate (ECA) without adding undesired additives, achieving mechanically robust and high ion-conduction gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) for safe and long cycle-life lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). The incorporated dual-lithium salts, i.e., lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI) not only facilitate radical polymerization of ECA monomers by suppressing their anionic polymerization, but also promote the formation of high-ionic conducting GPE. The incorporated methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer accelerates the radical polymerization of ECA (confirmed by DFT calculations), achieving controlled copolymerization of ECA-based copolymers. Here, the mechanically robust polymer network made by the ECA copolymer enables LMBs with both LFP cathodes and high-voltage LCO cathodes (4.5 V) operatable at different temperatures with ultra-long cycle life at 1 C (capacity retention of 81.1 % and 83.8 %, respectively, over 1000 cycles).

Encapsulation Enhances the Quantum Coherence of a Solid‐State Molecular Spin Qubit

Spins within molecules benefit from the atomistic control of synthetic chemistry for the realization of qubits. One advantage is that the quantum superpositions of the spin states encoding the qubit can be coherently manipulated using electromagnetic radiation. The main challenge is the fragility of these superpositions when qubits are to partake of solid-state devices. We address this issue with a supramolecular approach for protecting molecular spin qubits against decoherence. The molecular qubit [Cr(ox)3]3- has been encapsulated inside the diamagnetic triple-stranded helicate [Zn2L3]4+ (L is a bis-pyrazolylpyridine ligand). The quantum coherence of the protected qubit is then analyzed with pulsed EPR spectroscopy and compared with the unprotected qubit, both in solution and in the solid state. Crucially, the spin-spin relaxation in the solid state has been examined within diamagnetic crystal lattices of the isostructural ([Al(ox)3]@[Zn2L3])+ or [Al(ox)3]3- assemblies, respectively, doped with the Cr3+ qubit in two different (<10%) concentrations. The study unveils a surprising increase of the phase memory time of the qubit upon encapsulation only in the solid. Spin-lattice relaxation times also exhibit a significant enhancement, as established from inversion recovery pulse sequences and from slow relaxation of the magnetization of the protected qubit, not featured by the free qubit.
