Bi-stability and period-doubling cascade of frequency combs in exceptional-point lasers

Abstract Recent studies have demonstrated that a laser can self-generate frequency combs when tuned near an exceptional point (EP), where two cavity modes coalesce. These EP combs induce periodic modulation of the population inversion in the gain medium, and their repetition rate is independent of the laser cavity’s free spectral range. In this work, we perform a stability analysis that reveals two notable properties of EP combs, bi-stability and a period-doubling cascade. The period-doubling cascade enables halving of the repetition rate while maintaining the comb’s total bandwidth, presenting opportunities for the design of highly compact frequency comb generators.

Long-Term Stability of PVD/Sputtered Au Electrical Contacts to Thermoelectric Bi 2 Te 2 : Re-evaluation of SAND2015-7203

The fabrication of long-lived electrical contacts to thermoelectric Bi 2 Te 3 -based modules is a challenging problem due to chemical incompatibilities and rapid diffusion rates. Previously, technical guidance from SAND report 2015-7203 selected electroplated Au as the preferred method for fabrication of long-lived contacts because of concerns that the grain structure of sputtered/physical vapor deposited (PVD) Au contacts can evolve during aging. We have re- evaluated PVD Au contacts and show that they are appropriate for long-life service. We measure grain size and morphology at different aging times under accelerated temperature gradient conditions, and we show that the PVD Au contacts are stable and remain relatively unchanged. The PVD Au fabricated here is not subject to the deterioration observed in the previous report.

Enabling Ultra-Compact, Lightweight, Efficient, and Reliable 6.6 kW On-Board Bi-Directional Electric Vehicle Charger with Advanced Topology and Control

The research explored new topologies, control methods, mechanical integration, and thermal management methods for electric vehicle (EV) on-board chargers. The team investigated capacitor-based power conversion, leveraging the high energy densities inherent to capacitive energy storage compared to inductive methods. The proposed topologies simultaneously enabled high power density and high efficiency of the design. The proposed architecture was demonstrated in a 6.6 kW bi-directional charger prototype. The research pursued several directions to improve system performance. Innovative topologies were studied for both the main power conversion stage as well as the single-phase twice-line-frequency energy buffer. To ensure robust and efficient operation, new control methods were developed to integrate these two subsystems. To achieve high power density in the full system solution, the mechanical structure of the charger is highly optimized to maximally fill the converter box volume. In parallel with the mechanical design effort, the converter was packaged with high-performance cooling methods which removed heat from key areas of power dissipation in the converter. The thermal management system was optimized to minimize its weight and volume, ultimately motivating the design of a custom additively manufactured cold-plate. The full system achieves a peak power of 7 kW with less than 0.3% total harmonic distortion (THD) and greater than 0.994 power factor in power factor correction (PFC) operation, corresponding to a total box-volume power density of 47.9 kW/L and gravimetric power density of 24.6 W/g. The system achieves a peak efficiency of 98.9%, with 97.9% efficiency at maximum power.

Design of Monolithic Bi-Layer High-Z PAL-Si Hard X-ray CMOS Image Sensors for Quantum Efficiency Enhancement

This article experimentally investigates the inception of an innovative hard X-ray photon energy attenuation layer (PAL) to advance high-energy X-ray detection (20–50 keV). A bi-layer design with a thin film high-Z PAL on the top and Si image sensor on the bottom has previously demon-strated quantum yield enhancement via computational methods by the principle of photon energy down conversion (PEDC), where high-energy X-ray photon energies are attenuated via inelastic scattering down to ≤10 keV, which is suitable for efficient photoelectric absorption by Si. Quantum yield enhancement has been experimentally confirmed via a preliminary demonstration using PAL-integrated Si-based CMOS image sensors (Si CIS). Furthermore, substituting the high-Z PAL with a lower-Z material—Sn—and alternatively coupling it with a conventional scintillator ma-terial—Lutetium-yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO)—have been compared to demonstrate the most prominent efficacy of monolithic integration of high-Z PAL on Si CIS to detect hard X-rays, paving the way for next-generation high-energy X-ray detection methods.

TiNi-Based Bi-Metallic Shape-Memory Alloy by Laser-Directed Energy Deposition

In this study, laser-directed energy deposition was applied to build a Ti-rich ternary Ti–Ni–Cu shape-memory alloy onto a TiNi shape-memory alloy substrate to realize the joining of the multifunctional bi-metallic shape-memory alloy structure. The cost-effective Ti, Ni, and Cu elemental powder blend was used for raw materials. Various material characterization approaches were applied to reveal different material properties in two sections. The as-fabricated Ti–Ni–Cu alloy microstructure has the TiNi phase as the matrix with Ti2Ni secondary precipitates. The hardness shows no high values indicating that the major phase is not hard intermetallics. A bonding strength of 569.1 MPa was obtained by tensile testing, and digital image correlation reveals the different tensile responses of the two sections. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the phase-transformation temperatures. The austenite finishing temperature of higher than 80 °C was measured for the Ti–Ni–Cu alloy section. For the TiNi substrate, the austenite finishing temperature was tested to be near 47 °C at the bottom and around 22 °C at the upper substrate region, which is due to the repeated laser scanning that acts as annealing on the substrate. Finally, the multiple shape-memory effect of two shape-memory alloy sides was tested and identified.

A bi-level spatiotemporal clustering approach and its application to drought extraction

We present a novel flexible bi-level spatiotemporal clustering algorithm to extract events based on their intensity and spatiotemporal structures. Our algorithm consists of using (i) a novel space-time k-means clustering to obtain spatiotemporally coherent intensity clusters, and (ii) a density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) to spatiotemporally section the intensity clusters into individual events. We discuss the development of the algorithm, the selection, tuning and meaning of the parameters within each step, as well as its validation. Finally, we apply the algorithm to a spatiotemporal drought index, standardized vapor pressure deficit drought index (SVDI), over the continental United States (US) from 1980–2021 and show that it captures historical drought events over the continental United States and their spatiotemporal extents.

Bi-fated tendon-to-bone attachment cells are regulated by shared enhancers and KLF transcription factors

The mechanical challenge of attaching elastic tendons to stiff bones is solved by the formation of a unique transitional tissue. Here, we show that murine tendon-to-bone attachment cells are bi-fated, activating a mixture of chondrocyte and tenocyte transcriptomes, under regulation of shared regulatory elements and Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) transcription factors. High-throughput bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing of humeral attachment cells revealed expression of hundreds of chondrogenic and tenogenic genes, which was validated by in situ hybridization and single-molecule ISH. ATAC sequencing showed that attachment cells share accessible intergenic chromatin areas with either tenocytes or chondrocytes. Epigenomic analysis revealed enhancer signatures for most of these regions. Transgenic mouse enhancer reporter assays verified the shared activity of some of these enhancers. Finally, integrative chromatin and motif analyses and transcriptomic data implicated KLFs as regulators of attachment cells. Indeed, blocking expression of both Klf2 and Klf4 in developing limb mesenchyme impaired their differentiation.

Bi-static and mono-static synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging using a short-pulse laser

SAR imaging may be performed using a short-pulse laser to generate range-resolved reflection data. A short-pulse laser may be advantageous over other techniques to acquire the range-resolved data, especially in cases with very distant targets or other cases with low signal-to-noise ratio information, because a short-pulse laser can determine the range to individual reflectors with a single photon return and is more adaptable to a photon-starved inversion algorithm. This technique can be used with both mono-static and bi-static SAR configurations.

Integrating Multi-Source Data for Bi-Level Traffic Simulator Calibration: A Literature Review and Highway Case Study

Traffic simulation serves as a powerful tool for pre-evaluating policies and technologies. In this context, simulation-based Dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) models are capable of capturing traffic dynamics. They are well-known as critical tools in controlling and predicting traffic situations. The reliability of simulation results heavily depends on the calibration process. Most studies in the literature formulate and calibrate simulators based on a single source of collected data or multiple data sets with the same spatiotemporal characteristics. However, in practice, traffic data is collected by various tools with usually different spatial and temporal resolutions. This study introduces a novel approach to taking into account diverse input data from a variety of sources. An iterative bi-level solution is proposed. to equally treat traffic flow and speed data. The upper level solves flow calibration with the exact solution method, and the lower level calibrates the speed with the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) algorithm. Subsequently, the effectiveness of the proposed model is investigated using data from a six-mile section of Nashville's I-24 highway in Tennessee. The results demonstrate that our proposed model creates an effective feedback loop between the optimizer and the simulator for calibrating flow and speed to reduce the error between simulated and real data.

Evaluating the carbon footprint of the integrated DBD‐plasma bi‐reforming unit via laboratory scale experiments and scaled‐up process modeling

Catalytic dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma reactor experiments were performed in a tubular glass reactor with a 2 mm gap at 550°C to facilitate the reaction kinetics of steam added dry reforming or bireforming. The best specific energy input obtained was 11.2 eV/molecule feed at CO 2 :CH 4 :H 2 O of 4.5:1:4.5 ratio and gas hour space velocity (GHSV) = 432 h −1 . This value was used to design a conceptual process and assess the environmental impact of methane steam reforming-based H 2 production 18.4 kmol/h CO 2 emission processing into H 2 :CO = 2 syngas, with an emphasis on the carbon footprint.
