A dynamic interaction between CD19 and the tetraspanin CD81 controls B cell co-receptor trafficking

CD81 and its binding partner CD19 are core subunits of the B cell co-receptor complex. While CD19 belongs to the extensively studied Ig superfamily, CD81 belongs to a poorly understood family of four-pass transmembrane proteins called tetraspanins. Tetraspanins play important physiological roles by controlling protein trafficking and other processes. Here, we show that CD81 relies on its ectodomain to traffic CD19 to the cell surface. Moreover, the anti-CD81 antibody 5A6, which binds selectively to activated B cells, recognizes a conformational epitope on CD81 that is masked when CD81 is bound to CD19. Mutations of CD81 in this interface suppress its CD19 export activity. These data indicate that the CD81 - CD19 interaction is dynamically regulated upon B cell activation and this dynamism can be exploited to regulate B cell function. These results are not only valuable for understanding B cell biology, but also have important implications for understanding tetraspanin function generally.

Search for nonresonant new physics signals in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for nonresonant new physics phenomena in high-mass dilepton events produced in association with b-tagged jets is performed using proton-proton collision data collected in 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The analysis considers two effective field theory models with dimension-six operators; involving four-fermion contact interactions between two leptons (ℓℓ, electrons or muons) and b or s quarks (bbℓℓ and bsℓℓ). Two lepton flavor combinations (ee and μμ) are required and events are classified as having 0, 1, or ≥2 b-tagged jets in the final state. No significant excess is observed over the standard model backgrounds. Upper limits are set on the production cross section of the new physics signals. These translate into lower limits on the energy scale Λ of 6.9 to 9.0 TeV in the bbℓℓ model, depending on model parameters, and on the ratio of energy scale and effective coupling, Λ/g*, of 2.0 to 2.6 TeV in the bsℓℓ model. Lepton flavor universality is also tested by comparing the dielectron (ee) and dimuon (μμ) mass spectra for different b-tagged jet multiplicities. No significant deviation from the standard model expectation of unity is observed.

Dietary B group vitamin intake and the bladder cancer risk: a pooled analysis of prospective cohort studies

Abstract Purpose Diet may play an essential role in the aetiology of bladder cancer (BC). The B group complex vitamins involve diverse biological functions that could be influential in cancer prevention. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between various components of the B group vitamin complex and BC risk. Methods Dietary data were pooled from four cohort studies. Food item intake was converted to daily intakes of B group vitamins and pooled multivariate hazard ratios (HRs), with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), were obtained using Cox-regression models. Dose–response relationships were examined using a nonparametric test for trend. Results In total, 2915 BC cases and 530,012 non-cases were included in the analyses. The present study showed an increased BC risk for moderate intake of vitamin B1 (HR B1 : 1.13, 95% CI: 1.00–1.20). In men, moderate intake of the vitamins B1, B2, energy-related vitamins and high intake of vitamin B1 were associated with an increased BC risk (HR (95% CI): 1.13 (1.02–1.26), 1.14 (1.02–1.26), 1.13 (1.02–1.26; 1.13 (1.02–1.26), respectively). In women, high intake of all vitamins and vitamin combinations, except for the entire complex, showed an inverse association (HR (95% CI): 0.80 (0.67–0.97), 0.83 (0.70–1.00); 0.77 (0.63–0.93), 0.73 (0.61–0.88), 0.82 (0.68–0.99), 0.79 (0.66–0.95), 0.80 (0.66–0.96), 0.74 (0.62–0.89), 0.76 (0.63–0.92), respectively). Dose–response analyses showed an increased BC risk for higher intake of vitamin B1 and B12. Conclusion Our findings highlight the importance of future research on the food sources of B group vitamins in the context of the overall and sex-stratified diet.

Search for a massive scalar resonance decaying to a light scalar and a Higgs boson in the four b quarks final state with boosted topology

We search for new massive scalar particles X and Y through the resonant process X→YH→$b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, where H is the standard model Higgs boson. Data from CERN LHC proton-proton collisions are used, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The search is performed in mass ranges of 0.9–4 TeV for X and 60–600 GeV for Y, where both Y and H are reconstructed as Lorentz-boosted single large-area jets. The results are interpreted in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model and also in an extension of the standard model with two additional singlet scalar fields. The 95% confidence level upper limits for the production cross section vary between 0.1 and 150 fb depending on the X and Y masses, and represent a significant improvement over results from previous searches.

Measurement of the $\textit{B}(\textit{E}2 ↑)$ strengths of 36 Ca and 38 Ca

In this work, the $B(E2, 0^+_1 → 2^+_1)$ strengths of 36 Ca and 38 Ca are measured to be 131(20) $e^2\text{fm}^4$ and 101(11) $e^2\text{fm}^4$, respectively. The $\textit{B}(\textit{E}2)$ value for 36 Ca required a measurement of the p/γ branching ratio because the 2 + state is proton unbound. This branching ratio is $B_p$=0.087(8). These $\textit{B}(\textit{E}2)$ and branching-ratio values can be reproduced in the shell-model with the ZMB2 interaction, an interaction that predicts the $\textit{Z} = 20 \textit{sd}$-shell closure is incomplete with large proton pf-shell occupancies in the ground state. These occupancies are at odds with other shell-model and energy-density-functional calculations of 36 Ca. New data are used to provide an update on constraints of the density dependence of the symmetry energy through mirror charge-radii differences as well as to help reduce uncertainties of the astrophysical important 35 K(p,γ) reaction.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay B − → D 0 ρ ( 770 ) − at Belle II

We measure the branching fraction of the decay B − → D 0 ρ ( 770 ) − using data collected with the Belle II detector. The data contain 387 million B B ¯ pairs produced in e + e − collisions at the ϒ ( 4 S ) resonance. We reconstruct 8360 ± 180 decays from an analysis of the distributions of the B − energy and the ρ ( 770 ) − helicity angle. We determine the branching fraction to be ( 0.939 ± 0.021 ( stat ) ± 0.050 ( syst ) ) % , in agreement with previous results. Our measurement improves the relative precision of the world average by more than a factor of two. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

X-Ray Radiography and Phase-Contrast Imaging of the Engine Combustion Network Spray B Sprays and Injection

X-ray measurements of diesel sprays from two of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray B injectors are described. Measurements in these three-hole nozzles complement both visible light measurements of these sprays and previous x-ray measurements of the axial single-hole ECN Spray A injectors. Both axial and lateral motions of the injector needle valve were measured with x-ray phase contrast imaging. Additionally, the liquid mass distribution in room temperature sprays at elevated ambient pressure was determined with x-ray radiography. Measurements of both needle valve motion and spray distribution were performed at both the standard Spray A/B conditions and with selected variations of injection pressure, ambient density, and injection timing. The needle valve motion for the Spray B injectors is quite similar to that of the Spray A injectors, though little lateral motion is seen in either Spray B injector. Compared to the sprays from the Spray A injectors, the sprays from Spray B penetrate more slowly in the near-nozzle region, demonstrate a broader, more uniform distribution in the transverse direction, and are significantly more variable with respect to time. These differences demonstrate the importance of studies with multi-hole nozzles to provide insight into applied diesel combustion.

Measurement of CP asymmetries and branching fraction ratios of B – decays to two charm mesons

The CP asymmetries of seven B – decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a D *0 or ${D}_s^{\ast -}$ meson are analysed by reconstructing only the D 0 or ${D}_s^{-}$ decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}$ CP (B – → ${D}_s^{\ast -}$ D 0 ) and $\mathcal{A}$ CP (B – → ${D}_s^{-}$D $\ast$0 ), and the most precise measurement of the other five CP asymmetries. There is no evidence of CP violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured.

Measurement of the associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into b-quarks with a vector boson at high transverse momentum in pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson decaying into leptons and where the Higgs boson decays to a $b\bar{b}$ pair is measured in the high vector-boson transverse momentum regime, above 250 GeV, with the ATLAS detector. The analysed data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 , were collected in proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measured signal strength, defined as the ratio of the measured signal yield to that predicted by the Standard Model, is $0.72^{+0.39}_{-0.36}$ corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.1 (2.7) standard deviations. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into b quark pairs with a W or Z gauge boson, decaying into leptons, are measured in two exclusive vector boson transverse momentum regions, 250–400 GeV and above 400 GeV, and interpreted as constraints on anomalous couplings in the framework of a Standard Model effective field theory.

Measurement of the $B_s^0 → μμ$ effective lifetime with the ATLAS detector

This paper reports the first ATLAS measurement of the $B_s^0 → μμ$ effective lifetime. The measurement is based on the data collected in 2015–2016, amounting to 26.3 fb -1 of 13 TeV LHC proton-proton collisions. The proper decay-time distribution of 58 ± 13 background-subtracted signal candidates is fit with simulated signal templates parameterised as a function of the $B_s^0$ effective lifetime, with statistical uncertainties extracted through a Neyman construction. The resulting effective measurement of the $B_s^0 → μμ$ lifetime is 0.99$^{+0.42}_{-0.07}$ (stat.) ± 0.17 (syst.) ps and it is found to be consistent with the Standard Model.

Precise measurement of nuclear interaction cross sections towards neutron-skin determination with R 3 B

The R 3 B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment as a major instrument of the NUSTAR collaboration for the research facility FAIR in Darmstadt is designed for kinematically complete studies of reactions with high-energy radioactive beams. Part of the broad physics program of R 3 B is to constrain the asymmetry term in the nuclear equation-of-state and hence improve the description of highly asymmetric nuclear matter (e.g., in neutron stars). For a precise determination of the neutron-skin thickness – an observable which is directly correlated with the symmetry energy in theoretical calculations – by measuring absolute fragmentation cross sections, it is essential to quantify the uncertainty and challenge the reaction model under stable conditions. During the successful FAIR Phase-0 campaign of R 3 B, we precisely measured the energy dependence of total interaction cross sections in 12 C + 12 C collisions, for a direct comparison with calculations based on the eikonal reaction theory.

Measurement of cross sections for production of a $Z$ boson in association with a flavor-inclusive or doubly $b$-tagged large-radius jet in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ $\mathrm{TeV}$ with the ATLAS experiment

We present measurements of cross sections for production of a leptonically decaying $Z$ boson in association with a large-radius jet in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using 36 fb –1 of data from the ATLAS detector. Integrated and differential cross sections are measured at particle level in both a flavor inclusive and a doubly $b$-tagged fiducial phase space. The large-radius jet mass and transverse momentum, its kinematic relationship to the Z boson, and the angular separation of $b$-tagged small-radius track jets within the large-radius jet are measured. This measurement constitutes an important test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics in kinematic and flavor configurations relevant to several Higgs boson and beyond-Standard-Model physics analyses. The results highlight issues with modeling of additional hadronic activity in the flavor-inclusive selection, and a distinction between flavor-number schemes in the $b$-tagged phase space.

Search for the decay B s 0 → J / ψ π 0 at Belle experiment

We have analyzed 121.4 fb − 1 of data collected at the ϒ ( 5 S ) resonance by the Belle experiment using the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e − collider to search for the decay B s 0 → J / ψ π 0 . We observe no signal and report an upper limit on the branching fraction B ( B s 0 → J / ψ π 0 ) of 1.21 × 10 − 5 at 90% confidence level. This result is the most stringent, improving the previous bound by 2 orders of magnitude. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Measurements of the production cross-section for a Z boson in association with b - or c -jets in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of the production cross-section of a Z boson in association with b- or c-jets, in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 . Inclusive and differential cross-sections are measured for events containing a Z boson decaying into electrons or muons and produced in association with at least one b-jet, at least one c-jet, or at least two b-jets with transverse momentum p T > 20 GeV and rapidity |y| < 2.5. Predictions from several Monte Carlo generators based on next-to-leading-order matrix elements interfaced with a parton-shower simulation, with different choices of flavour schemes for initial-state partons, are compared with the measured cross-sections. The results are also compared with novel predictions, based on infrared and collinear safe jet flavour dressing algorithms. Selected Z+≥ 1 c-jet observables, optimized for sensitivity to intrinsic-charm, are compared with benchmark models with different intrinsic-charm fractions.

Redox‐Active Frustrated Lewis Pair‐Mediated B—H Bond Activation: From Proton Transfer to THF Ring Opening

The CAAC-stabilized dithiolene (L 0 ) zwitterion (1), an unusual redox-active intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair (FLP), activates the B─H bond of boranes via hydride-coupled reverse electron transfer processes. The reactions of 1 with catecholborane in THF give a zwitterionic bis(dithiolene)-based spiroborate ( 2 ), in which one sulphur atom (at the C2 carbon) bonds to the (CH 2 ) 4 OB(O) 2 C 6 H 4 chain due to the catecholborane (CatBH)/S thiourea Lewis pair-mediated THF ring opening. In addition to 2 , [CAAC(H)] + [(Cat) 2 B] − , ( 3 ), CAAC(H) 2 , ( 4 ), and [CAAC(H) 3 ] + [(Cat) 2 B] − , ( 5 ), are also isolated from these reactions. In addition to synthetic, structural, and spectroscopic data, a plausible reaction mechanism is proposed. This finding provides compelling experimental evidence of FLP-mediated B─H activation via net proton transfer.

Measurement of b jet shapes in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 5.02 TeV

We present the first study of charged-hadron production associated with jets originating from b quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The data sample used in this study was collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 27.4 pb$^{−1}$. To characterize the jet substructure, the differential jet shapes, defined as the normalized transverse momentum distribution of charged hadrons as a function of angular distance from the jet axis, are measured for b jets. In addition to the jet shapes, the per-jet yields of charged particles associated with b jets are also quantified, again as a function of the angular distance with respect to the jet axis. Extracted jet shape and particle yield distributions for b jets are compared with results for inclusive jets, as well as with the predictions from the pythia and herwig++ event generators.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Transforming nanoscale VO 2 (B) into a scalable sodium-ion electrode

The intermittent nature of renewable energies requires highly reliable grid-level energy storage approaches. A critical consideration in developing this technology is the areal capacity which determines battery performance and influences the cost of battery technology. Of related importance is finding new ways of developing scalable electrodes. In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) printing of conductive scaffolds has emerged as an alternative to overcome the scalability limitations of commercial tape cast electrodes. The research carried out in the current study demonstrates a successful scalability pathway for nanoscale VO 2 (B), a desirable cathode for sodium-ion batteries which has a nano-flower morphology with a crystallite size < 20 nm. By electrodepositing VO 2 (B) onto a graphene aerogel scaffold, we were able to achieve mass loading of over 100 mg·cm −2 and still possess an areal capacity of 10 mAh·cm −2 at a current density of 5 mA·cm −2 . Moreover, after 1000 cycles, these electrodes retained 75% to 80% of their initial capacity. Even at high loading levels, the electrodeposited VO 2 (B) exhibits pseudocapacitive material signatures such as a box-like voltammetry response, linear galvanostatic response, and no phase change upon lithiation. The scalability of the VO 2 (B) electrode is demonstrated in a series of experiments which show the areal capacity to scale upon increase in both mass loading and electrode thickness, with only small changes in specific capacity. Furthermore, this study establishes that nanoscale materials can be scaled up to achieve thick electrodes without compromising their electrochemical properties.

On dysprosium utilisation in multi-main-phase Nd–Dy–Fe–B magnets with core–shell microstructures

The development of high-performance Nd–Dy–Fe–B magnets that minimise the consumption of the scarce rare earth (RE) element Dy remains a major global scientific and technological quest. Here, we designed an alloy microstructure comprising of a uniform Dy-lean core–Dy-rich shell in a series of multi-main-phase (MMP) Nd–Dy–Fe–B magnets. The resulting MMP Dy1 and Dy3 magnets with an overall Dy level of 1 and 3 wt.% possessed values of 0.48 and 0.29 T/wt.% of coercivity increment per unit weight percentage of the Dy addition, respectively. Most importantly, the resulting MMP Dy3 magnet exhibited a high coercivity (2.38 T), an excellent thermal stability of the coercivity (|β| = 0.531%/°C), a high squareness factor (> 95%), all with little diminishment in the remanent magnetisation (1.35 T) and maximum energy product (43.6 MGOe). These properties are superior to the currently available sintered Nd–Dy–Fe–B magnets which utilise higher levels of Dy of 5 wt.%. Via magnetic and multi-scale microstructural characterisation experiments and micromagnetic simulations, the formation of the Dy-lean core–Dy-rich shell microstructure is rationalised via solid-state-diffusion and solution reprecipitation during liquid-phase sintering. The Dy-lean core–Dy-rich shell microstructure and the non-ferromagnetic low-Fe RE-rich grain boundary phase led to the synergistic magnetic performance. This is significant in the context of the MMP Nd–Dy–Fe–B magnets being applied to large-scale production. The present work establishes a pathway for the more sustainable utilisation of Dy in permanent magnets via formation of a uniform core–shell microstructure.
