2022 Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Plan Summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL, or the Laboratory) produced a Vulnerability Assessment and Resilience Plan (VARP) following Department of Energy (DOE) Guidance to assess and manage climate change related risks to the Laboratory’s assets and operations. This is a condensed summary of the Laboratory’s 2022 VARP – the full version of the document is not publicly available at this time. The VARP was led by the Pollution Prevention (P2) Program in the Environmental Protection and Compliance Division (EPC-DO) and covers the entirety of the 36-square-mile LANL site in Los Alamos, New Mexico. A Steering Committee, composed of representatives from the three main Laboratory Directorates and the Los Alamos Field Office, identified real property Critical Assets based on their Mission Dependency Index (MDI) scores. LANL used MDI scores of 70 and above, which are considered Mission-Critical, to generate a list of 141 Critical Asset facilities.

Progress on Associated-Particle Imaging Algorithms, 2022

The present work describes progress on developing imaging algorithms that use fast neutron signatures acquired using the associated-particle imaging (API) method. The present work complements ongoing work to develop neutron source and detector hardware to enable field inspection by investigating algorithms that are capable of discriminating among critical materials or extracting three-dimensional (3D) geometrical information from single-sided or transmission measurements. The present work is divided into three approaches: 1.Iterative reconstruction of inelastic gamma-ray emissions to perform 3D time-of-flight (TOF) imaging in a single view in either transmission or backscatter configurations. Iterative reconstruction enables image resolution better than the inherent TOF resolution. 2.Decomposition of registered neutron and x-ray radiographs into an assumed material list for each pixel in the image. 3.Material identification using full spectral analysis that includes the emergent neutron and gamma ray energies, times, and angles. Progress for each approach is summarized for fiscal year (FY) 2022.

Initiating Event Rates at U.S. Nuclear Power Plants: 2022 Update

Analyzing initiating event rates is important because it indicates trends and patterns of plant performance and provides inputs to several U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) risk-informed regulatory activities. This report presents an analysis of initiating event frequencies at U.S. commercial nuclear power plants from calendar year 1988 through 2022, as reported in licensee event reports. Engineers with nuclear power plant experience reviewed each event report since the last update to this report to categorize and characterize reactor trips. To be included in this study, an event had to meet all of the following criteria: (1) the event included an unplanned reactor trip (not a scheduled reactor trip on the daily operations schedule), (2) the sequence of events started when the reactor was critical and at or above the point of adding heat, (3) the event occurred at a U.S. commercial nuclear power plant (excluding Fort St. Vrain and LaCrosse), and (4) the event was reported by a licensee event report. Sixteen initiating event groupings are trended and displayed. For some of the categories, relevant events are plotted separately for boiling-water reactors (BWR) and pressurized-water reactors (PWR). P-values are given for the possible presence of a trend over the most recent 10 years.

ADRIANO2 Calorimeter Performance from 2022 Test Beams

A novel high-granularity dual-readout calorimetric technique was developed as part of the T1604 collaboration. The ADRIANO2 Calorimeter Prototype consists of a pair of optically isolated, small sized tiles made of scintillating plastic and lead glass. Čerenkov light from the lead glass are exploited to for high resolution timing measurements, while high granularity from scintillating plastic can be used to probe the spatial component of the particle shower. This setup works for excellent energy resolution and particle detection for REDTOP as it is crucial for a calorimeter to detect the decay products of eta/eta-prime mesons. Measurements were collected on ADRIANO2 between February to December 2022 to evaluate the detector performance at Fermilab’s Test Beam Facility. The key metrics extracted from my analysis are the detector’s efficiency for various tile configuration and light-yield which will then be used as parameters for an upgraded REDTOP monte-carlo simulation campaign. An in-depth analysis of ADRIANO2 performance are detailed in this presentation.
