Search for a narrow resonance with a mass between 10 and 70 GeV decaying to a pair of photons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV

The existence of a new spin-zero particle with a mass below the electroweak scale is predicted by several theoretical models. Searches for resonant production of photon pairs at the LHC are able to probe these models. We present a search for a narrow resonance produced through gluon fusion that decays into a pair of photons with an invariant mass between 10 and 70 GeV, using a proton-proton collision dataset from the CMS experiment. This dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 54.4 fb −1 , was recorded in 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using a newly introduced diphoton trigger that enabled exploration of the low-mass diphoton spectrum. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the gluon fusion production cross section and the branching fraction of the diphoton decay of a narrow resonance. An interpretation of these limits within an effective field theory framework for axionlike particles is also provided.

Electronic Layer Decoupling Driven by Density-Wave Order in La 4⁢ Ni 3 ⁢O 10

We probe the density-wave transition of the trilayer nickelate La 4⁢ Ni 3 ⁢O 10 with polarization-resolved infrared spectroscopy. The low-energy electrodynamics is strongly anisotropic, with metallic in-plane and insulating out-of-plane character. In the ordered phase, the anisotropy grows more than an order of magnitude as the out-of-plane conductivity is sharply suppressed. We interpret this enhancement as an effective electronic decoupling of the Ni-O layers driven by a spin-density-wave-induced redistribution of Ni−𝑑 𝑧 2 occupation within the trilayers. This electronic response is accompanied by clearly shifting and splitting out-of-plane phonons, compatible with a density-wave instability of electronic origin.

Magnetic correlations and pairing tendencies of the hybrid stacking nickelate superlattice La 7 Ni 5 O 17 (La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 /La 4 Ni 3 ⁢O 10 ) under pressure

Motivated by the recent rapid progress in high-𝑇 𝑐 nickelate superconductors, we comprehensively study the physical properties of the alternating bilayer trilayer stacking nickelate La 7 ⁢Ni 5 ⁢O 17 . The high-symmetry phase of this material, without the tilting of oxygen octahedra, is not stable at ambient conditions but becomes stable under high pressure, where a small hole pocket 𝛾 0 , composed of the 𝑑 3⁢𝑧 2 −𝑟 2 states in the trilayer sublattice, appears. Here, this pocket was identified in our previous work for trilayer La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 as important to develop superconductivity. Moreover, using random-phase approximation calculations, we find a leading 𝑠 ± pairing state for the high-symmetry phase under pressure with similar pairing strength as that obtained previously for the bilayer La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 compound, suggesting a similar or higher superconducting transition temperature 𝑇 𝑐 , at the random-phase approximation level. In addition, we find that the dominant magnetic fluctuations in the system driving this pairing state have antiferromagnetic structure both in-plane and between the planes of the top and bottom trilayer and bilayer sublattices, while the middle trilayer is magnetically decoupled.

Precision Measurement of Neutrino Oscillation Parameters with 10 Years of Data from the NOvA Experiment

This Letter reports measurements of muon-neutrino disappearance and electron-neutrino appearance and the corresponding antineutrino processes between the two NOvA detectors in the NuMI neutrino beam. These measurements use a dataset with double the neutrino mode beam exposure that was previously analyzed, along with improved simulation and analysis techniques. A joint fit to these samples in the three-flavor paradigm results in the most precise single-experiment constraint on the atmospheric neutrino mass-splitting, $Δm^2_{32}= 2.431^{+0.036}_{-0.034} (-2.479^{+0.036}_{-0.036}) \times 10^{-3}$~eV$^2$ if the mass ordering is Normal (Inverted). In both orderings, a region close to maximal mixing with $\sin^2θ_{23}=0.55_{+0.06}^{-0.02}$ is preferred. The NOvA data show a mild preference for the Normal mass ordering with a Bayes factor of 2.4 (corresponding to 70% of the posterior probability), indicating that the Normal ordering is 2.4 times more probable than the Inverted ordering. When incorporating a 2D $Δm^2_{32}\textrm{--}\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ constraint based on Daya Bay data, this preference strengthens to a Bayes factor of 6.6 (87\%).

Increasing the bulk of the 1TEL–target linker and retaining the 10×His tag in a 1TEL–CMG2-vWa construct improves crystal order and diffraction limits

TELSAM-fusion crystallization has the potential to become a revolutionary tool for the facile crystallization of proteins. TELSAM fusion can increase the crystallization rate and enable crystallization at low protein concentrations, in some cases with minimal crystal contacts [Nawarathnage et al. (2022), Open Biol. 12 , 210271]. Here, requirements for the linker composition between 1TEL and a fused CMG2 vWa domain were investigated. Ala-Ala, Ala-Val, Thr-Val and Thr-Thr linkers were evaluated, comparing metrics for crystallization propensity and crystal order. The effect on crystallization of removing or retaining the purification tag was then tested. It was discovered that increasing the linker bulk and retaining the 10×His purification tag improved the diffraction resolution, likely by decreasing the number of possible vWa-domain orientations in the crystal. Additionally, it was discovered that some vWa-domain binding modes are correlated with scrambling of the 1TEL polymer orientation in crystals and an effective mitigation strategy for this pathology is presented.

Design and Demonstration of an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW Three-phase Four-wire Power Conditioning System Converter Using 10 kV SiC MOSFETs

In this paper, an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW modular multilevel three-phase four-wire dc/ac converter based on 10 kV SiC MOSFETs is designed and demonstrated. The design considerations of key components, including the dc-link, device cooling, gate driver, isolated gate driver power supply (GDPS), medium voltage (MV) ac filter inductor, MV and medium frequency transformer, and the mechanical design are discussed. Two converters are designed, and two prototypes are developed, to study the converter paralleling operation and scalability. Both converters are fully tested up to their voltage and power ratings. However, the two converters are not identical. Based on the design and test results of the first converter, the MV power stage, transformer design, GDPS, as well as the low voltage power stage in the second converter are improved for smaller size and/or higher efficiency. Compared to the version 1 converter, the version 2 converter achieves 49% volume reduction and 2 percentage point efficiency improvement, with a peak efficiency of 98.4% at the rated power.

High-Performance Transmission and Distribution Co-simulation with 10,000+ Inverter-Based Resources

The inverter-based resource (IBR) has become avery important component in the distribution system. The impacts on system transient stability introduced by high IBR penetration are not fully addressed because of the lack of high-fidelity models. The aggregate IBR model at the transmission level cannot precisely reproduce the dynamics of distributed IBR at the distribution system because of the oversimplification. In this paper, we will develop a high-penetration fully-connected transmission and distribution (T&D) co-simulation platform that supports the simulation of 10,000+ dispersed IBR models. The interfacing and iterative initialization techniques for the co-simulation have been implemented to maintain stable operation and simulation of large-multitude of IBR models. The phasor-domain IBR models with grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) control are implemented in the distribution systems simulators. The developed platform is tested on high-performance computing (HPC) resources and can be utilized to explore the hierarchical control strategies of IBRs for the large-scale T&D hybrid system.

Degradation of Monocrystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Modules From a 10-Year-Old Rooftop System in Florida

A system of 180 monocrystalline aluminum back-surface field modules were installed in Cocoa, Florida, for 10 years. In total, 156 modules are characterized and compared to 3 controls. Power degradation rates vary between – 0.14% to – 3.22% per year, with median and average rates of –0.92% and –1.05% per year, respectively. The losses are primarily resistive with minor optical and recombination loss contributions. Electroluminescence imaging shows a characteristic pattern, which is shown to be resistive in nature when compared to photoluminescence. Resistive losses are due to corrosion of the rear contact Ag/solder interface and, to a much lesser degree, gridline Ag oxidation. Moisture ingress through the backsheet is likely responsible for mediating corrosion. Optical losses are due mostly to a combination of antireflection coating degradation, minor encapsulant browning, and delamination. Minor front contact corrosion may contribute to recombination. Furthermore, this study expands upon previous work on this vintage of the module by examining a large sample set, comprehensive characterization including techniques not previously used on these modules, and a comparison between two other systems of different climates.

Efficient Topology Assessment for Integrated Transmission and Distribution Network with 10,000+ Inverter-based Resources

The renewable energy proliferation calls upon the grid operators and planners to systematically evaluate the potential impacts of distributed energy resources (DERs). Considering the significant differences between various inverter-based resources (IBRs), especially the different capabilities between grid-forming inverters and grid-following inverters, it is crucial to develop an efficient and effective assessment procedure besides available co-simulation framework with high computation burdens. This paper presents a streamlined graph-based topology assessment for the integrated power system transmission and distribution networks. Graph analyses were performed based on the integrated graph of modified miniWECC grid model and IEEE 8500-node test feeder model, high performance computing platform with 40 nodes and total 2400 CPUs has been utilized to process this integrated graph, which has 100,000+ nodes and 10,000+ IBRs. The node ranking results not only verified the applicability of the proposed method, but also revealed the potential of distributed grid forming (GFM) and grid following (GFL) inverters interacting with the centralized power plants.

Design Considerations for High-Voltage Insulated Gate Drive Power Supply for 10-kV SiC MOSFET Applied in Medium-Voltage Converter

High-performance gate drive power supply (GDPS) plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and safety of the gate driver for power semiconductor devices. This article focuses on the design of a high-voltage-insulated GDPS for the 10-kV silicon carbide MOSFET in medium-voltage (MV) application. Design considerations, including insulation scheme, high-voltage-insulated transformer design, and load voltage regulation scheme, are proposed. In addition, the performance of the secondary-side-regulated (SSR) GDPS and that of the primary-side-regulated (PSR) GDPS are compared for several aspects, including interwinding capacitance, load voltage regulation rate, conversion efficiency, and hardware complexity. Finally, an SSR GDPS and a PSR GDPS, with an insulation voltage of 20 kV, are built in the lab. Furthermore, the test results demonstrate that the PSR GDPS is more preferable because of lower interwinding capacitance, lower load voltage regulation rate, higher conversion efficiency, and simpler control circuit.

A Novel Voltage Balancing Control With dv/dt Reduction for 10-kV SiC MOSFET-Based Medium Voltage Modular Multilevel Converter

Using high voltage (HV) silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) is promising because it results in fewer submodules and lower switching loss compared to conventional Si based solutions. The nearest level pulsewidth modulation (NL-PWM) is commonly used in the MMC for medium voltage applications. However, with the NL-PWM and existing voltage balancing control, there are many submodules that switch their modes in a control cycle, resulting in a high dv/dt during the deadtime of the power semiconductor, which could be multiple times of the dv/dt of the single device. This poses great challenges on the noise immunity and insulation design in the MMC using HV SiC devices, which have very fast switching speed. A novel voltage balancing control, which ensures only two submodules switch their modes in a control cycle, is proposed in this article, limiting the maximum dv/dt to the dv/dt of a single power semiconductor and also maintaining the voltage balance performance. Furthermore, the proposed voltage balancing control is experimentally validated in a 10-kV SiC mosfet based MMC with four submodules per arm.

1 kV, 10-kW SiC-Based Quadruple Active Bridge DCX Stage in a DC to Three-Phase AC Module for Medium-Voltage Grid Integration

Interfacing low voltage dc to medium voltage three-phase ac grid is often based on series-stackable modular converter architectures. To minimize energy storage requirements, it is advantageous to employ a quadruple active bridge (QAB) stage operating as a "dc transformer" in each stackable module. The QAB stage offers three isolated dc link voltages, which then allow for flexible stacking of three single-phase dc-to-ac inverter stages. Each of the module phases processes a pulsating power having a component at twice the line frequency. This presents a challenge in maintaining zero voltage switching (ZVS) on the secondary sides of the QAB during low-power portions of the line cycle. This article is focused on the design of the QAB stage. A detailed analysis of ZVS switching waveforms is presented, including effects of nonlinear device capacitances. It is shown how ZVS can be achieved at all times using a relatively small circulating current provided by the magnetizing inductance of the high-frequency transformer. Analytical expressions are given for the optimal values of the magnetizing inductance and the dead times of the QAB primary and secondary bridges. This approach is verified by experimental results on a 1 kV, 10-kW SiC-based prototype, demonstrating a relatively flat efficiency curve with a peak efficiency of 97.1% at 75% load.

A highly efficient, 10-J output signal amplifier for ultra-intense all-OPCPA systems

Optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) using high-energy Nd:glass lasers has the potential to produce ultra-intense pulses (>10 23 W/cm 2 ). We report on the performance of the final high-efficiency amplifier in an OPCPA system based on large-aperture (63 x 63-mm 2 ) partially deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) crystals. Here, the seed beam (170 nm, 240 mJ) was provided by the preceding OPCPA stages. The maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency of 37% was achieved with a 52-mm-long DKDP crystal and 40-J pump energy at 527 nm due to the flattop super-Gaussian pump beam profile and flat-in-time pulse shape. The 11.8-J output signal was compressed to 19 fs.

High-speed silicon microresonator modulators with high optical modulation amplitude (OMA) at input powers >10 mW

A high-speed silicon photonic microdisc modulator is used with more than 10 mW optical power in the bus waveguide, extending the optical power handling regime used with compact silicon resonant modulators at 1550 nm. We present an experimental study of the wavelength tuning range and biasing path required to shift the resonant frequency to the optimal point versus on chip power. We measure the optical modulation amplitude (OMA) along different biasing trajectories of the microdisc under active modulation and demonstrate an OMA of 4.1 mW with 13.5 mW optical power in the bus waveguide at 20 Gbit/s non-return to zero (NRZ) data modulation.

49 W carrier-envelope-phase-stable few-cycle 2.1 µm OPCPA at 10 kHz

We demonstrate a mid-infrared optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier (OPCPA), delivering 2.1 µm center wavelength pulses with 20 fs duration and 4.9 mJ energy at 10 kHz repetition rate. This self-seeded system is based on a kW-class Yb:YAG thin-disk amplifier driving a CEP stable short-wavelength-infrared (SWIR) generation and three consecutive OPCPA stages. Our SWIR source achieves an average power of 49 W, while still maintaining excellent phase and average power stability with sub-100 mrad carrier-envelope-phase-noise and 0.8% average power fluctuations. These parameters enable the OPCPA setup to drive attosecond pump probe spectroscopy experiments with photon energies in the water window.
