Spin/valley pumping of resident electrons in WSe2 and WS2 monolayers

Abstract Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides are ideal materials to control both spin and valley degrees of freedom either electrically or optically. Nevertheless, optical excitation mostly generates excitons species with inherently short lifetime and spin/valley relaxation time. Here we demonstrate a very efficient spin/valley optical pumping of resident electrons in n-doped WSe 2 and WS 2 monolayers. We observe that, using a continuous wave laser and appropriate doping and excitation densities, negative trion doublet lines exhibit circular polarization of opposite sign and the photoluminescence intensity of the triplet trion is more than four times larger with circular excitation than with linear excitation. We interpret our results as a consequence of a large dynamic polarization of resident electrons using circular light.

High power laser apparatus and system

A high-power, continuous-wave laser was designed for use in power transmission and energy-collecting systems, and for producing incoherent light for pumping a laser material. The laser has a high repetitive pulsing rate per unit time, resulting in a high-power density beam. The laser is composed of xenon flash tubes powered by fast-charging capacitors flashed in succession by a high-speed motor connected to an automobile-type distributor.

Modulational instability in a plasma with suprathermal electrons

The consequences of the presence of suprathermal electrons on the linear stage of modulational instabilities are investigated for a range of parameters appropriate to both laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. Substantial modification to the growth rate and secondary spectrum are found to occur for instabilities driven by large amplitude Langmuir waves in the dipole limit due to the kinetic effects of the suprathermal electrons. In particular, for reasonable choices of pump amplitude and suprathermal energy density, additional modes become unstable.

A 10-watt CW photodissociation laser with IODO perfluoro-tert-butane

NASA has been investigating the feasibility of direct solar-pumped laser systems for power beaming in space. Among the various gas, liquid, and solid laser systems being proposed as candidates for solar-pumped lasers, the iodine photodissociation gas laser has demonstrated its potential for space application. Of immediate attention is the determination of system requirements and the choice of lasants to improve the system efficiency. The development of an efficient iodine laser depends on the availability of a suitable iodide which has favorable laser kinetics, chemically reversibility, and solar energy utilization. Among the various alkyliodide lasants comparatively tested in a long-pulse system, perfluoro- tert-butyl iodide, T-C4F9I, was found to be the best. However, the operating conditions for the laser medium in a continuously pumped and continuous-flow iodine laser differ considerably from those in the pulsed regime. The results of the continuous wave (CW)) laser performance from t-C4F9I are reported. Perfluoro- n-propyl iodide, n-C3F7I is used for comparison because of its universal use in photodissociation iodine lasers.

6 um Pulsed OP-GaAs OPO Laser for Unambiguous Water Ice Detection on the Moon and Other Planetary Bodies

NASA demands a laser transmitter for planetary remote sensing to detect water-ice on the Moon and other planetary bodies. Based on the measurement of the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) instrument, the discovery of water ice on the Moon was acclaimed, but the measurement is disputed because OH- and/or H2O-bearing materials share the absorption line around 3 μm wavelength. Lunar Flashlight, another mission project exploring the surface of Moon which will be launched later this year, enables to map the minerals on dark area of the Moon, but could not resolve the above-mentioned ambiguity. The absorption of 6.08 μm light is uniquely associated with the bending resonance of H2O since there is no comparable vibration in confounding OH-bearing materials. 6.08 μm laser between the atmospheric windows: middle-wave infrared (3-5 μm) and long-wave infrared (8-12 μm) has not been commercially available. Our approach is a Q-switched Ho:YLF laser pumped the orientation-pattern Gallium Arsenide optical parametric oscillator (OP-GaAs OPO) for generating high-energy laser pulses at the wavelength of 6.08 μm. In the current design, a 1.94 μm Tm:fiber is used as the pump source. In the compact design, a 1.94 μm laser diode will replace the Tm:fiber laser as the pump source. We will combine this proposed mid-infrared laser with the latest HgCdTe avalanche photodiode (APD) array to design a lidar for detecting water ice on the Moon and Mars from their respective orbits, enabling novel science and in-situ resource utilization. Our instrument is an enabling technology aboard the Artemis program and others.

Large Eddy Simulations of Upper-Ocean Turbulence Across the Equatorial Pacific Cold Tongue

Turbulence in the equatorial Pacific cold tongue plays multiple roles in the sea-surface temperature budget. However, observations of turbulence are limited to a handful of field experiments lasting from a few days to one month at 0 N , 140 W, and the key turbulent fluxes can only be inferred. Although explicit simulations of turbulence resolve these fluxes, the required large eddy simulations (LES) are costly and thus also limited to a few weeks. A two-fold hypothesis motivates this contribution to the PUMP pre-field modelling experiments in support of TPOS: 1) that there exist useful relationships between the surface wind, wave, and buoyancy forcing, oceanic shear and stratification, and turbulent mixing, but 2) these relationships differ between regions of equatorial dynamics (f~0) and higher latitudes, such that the state space is insufficiently sampled to understand these relationships and represent them in ocean general circulation models (OGCM). To address the lack of observations, we simulated 35 continuous days of upper ocean turbulence using LES during October-November 1985 at sites in two regions (70 days in total) of the cold tongue: 0 N, 140 W and 3 N, 140 W. The model reproduces many features of the observed turbulence at 0,140W, including the “deep-cycle” observed by Gregg et al. (1985) Nature and the turbulent pulses every few hours during the night and in the early morning. Furthermore, the results at 3 N support the hypothesis advanced by Cherian et al. (2021) JPO that strong, but intermittent deep-cycle turbulence is observed to the north of the equator in the presence of strong shear associated with Tropical Instability Waves. Comparisons with the K-profile parameterization (KPP) scheme show that additional tuning of the KPP parameters can reduce differences between the turbulent fluxes produced by KPP and LES at both sites. The results will suggest modifications to OGCMs and already emphasize the need for a more extensive measurements of vertical profiles of shear, stratification and turbulent mixing to reveal the spatio-temporal structure of turbulence and how it relates to forcing, shear and stratification across the equatorial Pacific Cold tongue.

Modeling a Water-Cooled Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger Condensing CO2 for use in SCO2 Cycle System Optimization Studies

This work describes a one-dimensional model of a water-cooled printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) condensing supercritical CO2. The model is developed for use in cycle optimization studies (e.g., minimizing levelized cost of electricity) as either the main heat rejection cooler and/or a compressor intercooler for recompression closed Brayton supercritical CO2 power cycles. Sensitivity and case studies are used to illustrate the impact of important model parameters, and this includes allowing for independent variation of zig-zag channel wave angles on the CO2 and water side. Results show that for a given CO2 design pressure (and thus saturation temperature), the PCHE design inlet water temperature has a significant impact on the PCHE size. Results also demonstrate that if wave angles are the same on the CO2 and water side, the water side pressure drop will have more influence on determining the optimum PCHE mass than the CO2 side pressure drop. Reducing the water side wave angle to near straight channel flow offers a more compact design for a similar water side pressure drop (and pump power requirement). Cases are also shown for further increasing the compactness and how the PCHE mass is affected along with water pump power.

Magneto-optical spectroscopy based on pump-probe strobe light

Here, we demonstrate a pump-probe strobe light spectroscopy for sensitive detection of magneto-optical dynamics in the context of hybrid magnonics. The technique uses a combinatorial microwave-optical pump-probe scheme, leveraging both the high-energy resolution of microwaves and high-efficiency detection using optical photons. In contrast with conventional stroboscopy using continuous-wave light, we apply microwave and optical pulses with varying pulse widths, and demonstrate magneto-optical detection of magnetization dynamics in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 films. The detected magneto-optical signals depend strongly on the characteristics of both the microwave and the optical pulses, as well as their relative time delays. We show that good magneto-optical sensitivity and coherent stroboscopic character are maintained, even at a microwave pump pulse of 1.5 ns and an optical probe pulse of 80 ps, under a 7 MHz clock rate, corresponding to a pump-probe footprint of approximately 1% in one detection cycle. Our results show that time-dependent strobe light measurement of magnetization dynamics can be achieved in the gigahertz frequency range under a pump-probe detection scheme.

Mapping wave packet bifurcation at a conical intersection in CH 3 I by attosecond XUV transient absorption spectroscopy

Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption spectroscopy has emerged as a sensitive tool for mapping the real-time structural and electronic evolution of molecules. Here, attosecond XUV transient absorption is used to track dynamics in the A-band of methyl iodide (CH 3 I). Gaseous CH 3 I molecules are excited to the A-band by a UV pump (277 nm, ~20 fs) and probed by attosecond XUV pulses targeting iodine I(4d) core-to-valence transitions. Owing to the excellent temporal resolution of the technique, passage through a conical intersection is mapped through spectral signatures of nonadiabatic wave packet bifurcation observed to occur at 15 ± 4 fs following UV photoexcitation. The observed XUV signatures and time dynamics are in agreement with previous simulations [H. Wang, M. Odelius, and D. Prendergast, J. Chem. Phys. 151, 124106 (2019)]. Furthermore, due to the short duration of the UV pump pulse, coherent vibrational motion in the CH 3 I ground state along the C-I stretch mode (538 ± 7 cm -1 ) launched by resonant impulsive stimulated Raman scattering and dynamics in multiphoton excited states of CH 3 I are also detected.

Distributed Parameter Analysis of Pressure and Flow Disturbances in Rocket Propellant Feed Systems

A digital distributed parameter model for computing the dynamic response of propellant feed systems is formulated. The analytical approach used is an application of the wave-plan method of analyzing unsteady flow. Nonlinear effects are included. The model takes into account locally high compliances at the pump inlet and at the injector dome region. Examples of the calculated transient and steady-state periodic responses of a simple hypothetical propellant feed system to several types of disturbances are presented. Included are flow disturbances originating from longitudinal structural motion, gimbaling, throttling, and combustion-chamber coupling. The analytical method can be employed for analyzing developmental hardware and offers a flexible tool for the calculation of unsteady flow in these systems.

Oscillating two-stream and parametric decay instabilities in a weakly magnetized plasma

The paper considers the effects of a weak ambient magnetic field on the oscillating two-stream and parametric decay instabilities with emphasis on the dependence of the angular variation of the instability thresholds and growth rates on the magnetic field. A dispersion relation is derived in the limit in which the electron plasma frequency is much greater than the cyclotron frequency, and is solved for dipole and monochromatic pump spectra. The analysis shows that the presence of a magnetic field can substantially enhance thresholds and reduce growth rates for waves propagating at an oblique angle with respect to the ambient magnetic field, so that the magnetic field has a stabilizing influence on the off-parallel propagating modes.

Theoretical studies of solar-pumped lasers

Estimates of the absorption and emission characteristics of molecules required to develop materials for solar-pumped lasers are addressed. These characteristics are described in terms of the Franck Condon factors, which are calculated from the molecular wave functions. Wave functions for vibrational levels in the lower and upper electronic states of I2 and NSe are calculated numerically and methods of checking errors discussed. Errors arise when the vibrational quantum numbers are high; but, using a calculated rather than measured value of the dissociation energy, wave functions up to the fiftieth vibrational level are obtained. A numerical method of evaluating the wave functions is given, which should be more accurate in the region of electronic transitions during absorption. Franck Condon factors, plotted versus the wavelength of the absorbed photons, are shown, and a check on the Franck Condon factors is made using the vibrational sum rule.

Photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides

A circularly polarized ac pump field illuminated near resonance on two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) produces an anomalous Hall effect in response to a dc bias field. In this work, we develop a theory for this photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in undoped TMDs irradiated by a strong coherent laser field. The strong field renormalizes the equilibrium bands and opens up a dynamical energy gap where single-photon resonance occurs. The resulting photon dressed states, or Floquet states, are treated within the rotating-wave approximation. A quantum kinetic equation approach is developed to study the nonequilibrium density matrix and time-averaged transport currents under the simultaneous influence of the strong ac pump field and the weak dc probe field. Dissipative effects are taken into account in the kinetic equation that captures relaxation and dephasing. The photoinduced longitudinal and Hall conductivities display notable resonant signatures when the pump field frequency reaches the spin-split interband transition energies. Rather than valley polarization, we find that the anomalous Hall current is mainly driven by the intraband response of photon-dressed electron populations near the dynamical gap at both valleys, accompanied by a smaller contribution due to the interband response. In conclusion, these findings highlight the importance of photon-dressed bands and nonequilibrium distribution functions in achieving a proper understanding of the photoinduced anomalous Hall effect in a strong pump field.

Strong-field ionization of the triplet ground state of O 2

Using strong-field ionization as a probe, we observe highly nonperiodic evolution of the spin-rotation wave packet launched by a nonionizing femtosecond pulse in oxygen. The nonperiodicity is readily apparent only in rotationally cold molecules that are pumped with a weak alignment pulse. We show that this behavior is a consequence of the spin-rotation and the spin-spin couplings in the triplet ground state of the neutral molecule. A model that includes these couplings in the field-free Hamiltonian but in neither the alignment nor the ionization step explains most of the observed dynamics, suggesting that neither process depends explicitly on the electronic spin. We also show that the angle dependence of strong-field ionization can be retrieved from the delay-dependent signal even when coupling to spin complicates the rotational dynamics.
