Definition of fragmentation functions and the violation of sum rules

We point out a problem with the formulation and derivations of sum rules for quark fragmentation functions that impacts their validity in QCD, but which potentially points toward an improved understanding of final states in inclusive hard processes. Fragmentation functions give the distribution of final-state hadrons arising from a parton exiting a hard scattering, and the sum rules for momentum, electric charge, etc. express conservation of these quantities. The problem arises from a mismatch between the quark quantum numbers of the initial quark and the fact that all observed final-state hadrons are confined bound states with color zero. We point that, in a confining theory like QCD, the Wilson line in the operator definition of a fragmentation function entails that the final state in a fragmentation function includes a bound state in the external field generated by the Wilson line. We justify this with the aid of general features of string hadronization. The anomalous bound states are restricted to fractional momentum z = 0 . They tend to invalidate sum rules like the one for charge conservation when applied to the fragmentation functions inferred from experimental data but not the momentum sum rule. We propose to exploit our ideas in future studies as a way to relate the fragmentation functions extracted from inclusive cross sections to more detailed nonperturbative descriptions of final state hadronization. We also describe scenarios wherein the traditional sum rules might remain approximately valid with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Detecting anomalous C P violation in heavy-ion collisions through baryon-electric charge correlations

The chiral magnetic effect and the chiral vortical effect induce a correlation between baryon and electric currents. Here we show that this correlation can be detected using a new observable: a mixed baryon-electric charge correlator. This correlator is proportional to the baryon asymmetry, suggesting a novel way to separate the chiral effects from the background in heavy-ion collisions.

BICEP/Keck XXI: Constraints on early-Universe parity violation from multipole-dependent birefringence

We present the first constraints on multipole-dependent cosmic birefringence using CMB polarization data from the BK18 dataset, which combines observations from BICEP2, Array, and BICEP3 at frequencies of 95, 150, and 220 GHz. Photon coupling to an axionlike field leads to the rotation of CMB polarization, inducing nonzero cross-correlations. We show that a multipole-dependent rotation imprints a distinct signature in the polarization spectra that can be constrained. Specifically, we consider an early dark energy (EDE) scenario in which a pseudoscalar field couples to photons through a Chern-Simons interaction, generating a polarization rotation with multipole dependence. We introduce a phenomenological as a step function, obtaining constraints on the step function size consistent with zero, with uncertainties less than (68% CL). In addition, using multi-frequency , , and cross spectra, along with robust BICEP/ foreground treatment and likelihood framework, we derive constraints on the axion-photon coupling amplitude for several choices of EDE parameters. For the baseline best-fit value from the 2018 analysis, we obtain (68% CL), consistent with previous limits.

Constraints on lepton number violation with the 2 tonne · year CUORE dataset

Matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) may help explain this asymmetry while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment searches for 0νββ of 130 Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence of 0νββ and place a lower limit on the half-life of T 1/2 > 3.5 × 10 25 years (90% credibility interval) with over 2 tonne·years of TeO 2 exposure. Finally, the tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5-year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate crucial infrastructure for future-generation experiments capable of searching for 0νββ across multiple isotopes.

Mitigative Strategies for Recovering From Large Language Model Trust Violations

In this study, we investigated strategies to address trust issues arising from errors in large language models (LLMs). The study examined the impact of confidence scores, system capability explanations, and user feedback on trust restoration post-error. 68 participants viewed the responses of an LLM to 20 general trivia questions, with an error introduced on the third trial. Each participant was presented with one mitigation strategy. Participants rated their overall trust in the model and the reliability of the answer. Results showed an immediate drop in trust after the error; however, there were no differences across the three strategies in trust recovery. All conditions had a logarithmic trend in trust recovery following error. Differences in overall trust were predicted by perceived reliability of the answer, suggesting that participants were evaluating results critically and using that to inform their trust in the model. Qualitative data supported this finding; participants expressed lasting distrust despite the LLM’s later accuracy. Results showcase the need to prioritize accuracy in LLM deployment, because early errors may irrevocably damage user trust calibration and later adoption.
