High Contrast Pattern Projection To Enable Background Oriented Schlieren Based Air Leak Detection Through Any Interior Or Exterior Building Surface

Air leakage in buildings wastes an estimated 4 quads of energy per year in the United States. Finding and sealing leakage sites is critical in existing buildings. Previous work has shown that background oriented Schlieren (BOS) imaging can be used to visualize air leakage but requires the leak to exit through a high contrast surface like a brick wall. To remedy this, different techniques of projecting various high contrast patterns on low contrast building surfaces like interior gypsum walls or vinyl siding were investigated. For each technique, the background quality was measured and compared to an ideal printed random dot background. The background quality metrics were correlated with the measured visualization metrics to understand which metrics are most important for maximizing air leak visualization performance. In this work, leakage visualization performance is presented for these various projected backgrounds with an aim to expand the building surfaces suitable for the BOS leak detector.

Thermoplastic rubberlike material produced at low cost

Thermoplastic rubberlike material is prepared by blending a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate with asphalt and a petroleum distillate. This low cost material is easily molded or extruded and is compatible with a variety of fillers.

Quick don-doff electrode pastes

Evaluation of electrode pastes for use in electrocardiographs and electroencephalographs found that the one having the desired don-doff properties had to be water soluble or a water dispersible base. Poly /methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride/ or starch gels of the gum drop variety are two such bases.

Use of nonwettable membranes for water transfer

Transfer of water through nonwettable vinyl fluoride membranes has two unique features - /1/ very low water transfer rates can be held constant by holding temperature and solute concentrations constant, /2/ the pressure gradient against which water is transported is limited only by solution breakthrough or membrane strength.

Organic contamination analysis: High resolution mass spectrometric analysis of surface organics on selected areas of Surveyor 3

The mirror and middle shroud were extracted for organics by washing the surfaces with solvents. The techniques are discussed. Ion microprobe analyses of the primarily atomic species are presented. The sources of the organic contaminants are: (1) hydrocarbons from lubricating oils and general terrestrial contamination, (2) dioctyl phthalate, probably from polyethylene bagging material (the plasticizer), (3) carboxylic acids from decomposition of grease and general terrestrial contamination, (4) silicones from sources such as lubricating oil, (5) outgassing of electronics and plasticizer, (6) vinyl alcohol and styrene copolymer, probably from electronic insulation, and (7) nitrogenous compounds from the lunar module and possibly Surveyor 3 engine exhaust.

The influence of modifications of a fatigue loading history program on fatigue lifetime

Rectangular specimens of 7075 and 2014 aluminum alloys with two holes (stress concentration factor of 3.24) have been tested under axial fatigue loading on a six-rod test bed with modifications of the loading program, the surface particulars, and the frequency. The length of the precrack stage was investigated by use of a new crack detector. In most cases the two alloys behaved similarly, with similar life to crack start under the same loading. Some overloads lengthened the life. Truncation by omission of the lowest peak loads should be limited to about 20 percent of the ultimate load. Simplifying counting methods gave misleading results. Very thin surface layers of anodizing, protection by vinyl, dry nitrogen atmosphere, as well as stepwise reaming or grinding the surface of the holes, lengthened the life; thick anodized layers shortened the life. Compressing the hole surface by rolling had no influence. Frequencies at about 210 to 240 cpm produced shorter lives than those at 40 cpm. At 5.4 cpm the life was considerably longer. A model to better understand the precrack-stage fatigue mechanism is discussed.

Contamination threats to critical surfaces from handling and storage practices.

Review of the procedures and results of a program designed to remove the threat of sources of molecular and particulate contamination of critical optical, electrical, and mechanical elements in spacecraft. The results of recent contamination-probing thermal-vacuum tests indicate that some of the materials and practices commonly used to protect critical surfaces from molecular or particulate contamination can themselves represent significant threats. These contamination sources include clean-room and clean-tent materials, gloves, tissues, and covering or packaging materials. Mass and infrared spectral analyses of these materials and the environments and instruments exposed to them show that the contaminants are mostly plasticizers, slip or antistatic agents, and binders used in the manufacture of these products. Products of particular threat include vinyl gloves, boots, clean-tent walls, and some polyethylene sheets and bags. Techniques for reducing these threats are discussed.

Photochemistry of unsaturated polymers.

The mechanisms of the direct photochemical reactions which occur in unsaturated polymers when irradiated as thin films in vacuo are reviewed. Important reactions in 1,4-polyisoprene and 1,4-polybutadiene are cis-trans isomerization, loss of 1,4-unsaturation, formation of new external double bonds (vinylidene and/or vinyl units) and cyclopropyl formation. In 1,2-polybutadiene and 3,4-polyisoprene, on the other hand, the main reaction is consumption of the external double bonds through cyclization. Recent work on the photoinduced microstructural changes in cis and trans polypentenamers is also discussed.

Multifunction display system, volume 1

The design and construction of a multifunction display man/machine interface for use with a 4 pi IBM-360 System are described. The system is capable of displaying superimposed volatile alphanumeric and graphical data on a 512 x 512 element plasma panel, and holographically stored multicolor archival information. The volatile data may be entered from a keyboard or by means of an I/O interface to the 360 system. A 2-page memory local to the display is provided for storing the entered data. The archival data is stored as a phase hologram on a vinyl tape strip. This data is accessible by means of a rapid transport system which responds to inputs provided by the I/O channel on the keyboard. As many as 500 frames may be stored on a tape strip for access in under 6 seconds.

Friction behavior of members of the platinum metals group with gold

The adhesion and friction behavior of the platinum metals group was examined with clean surfaces and surfaces selectively contaminated with oxygen, vinyl chloride (C2H3Cl), and methyl mercaptan (CH3SH). A pin or disk specimen configuration was used with the pin being a single crystal of gold of the (111) orientation and with the platinum metal disks also being single crystals of the (111) or (0001) orientation. Loads applied ranged from 1 to 10 g and a sliding velocity of 0.7 mm/min was employed. Results indicate adhesion and transfer of gold to all of the platinum metals. Despite this observation friction differences existed among the metals in the group. These differences are related to surface chemical activity. Adsorption of various friction reducing species was selective. With some adsorbates present strong adhesive forces between metals were still observed.
