Total photoionization cross sections of atomic oxygen from threshold to 44.3A

The relative cross section of atomic oxygen for the production of singly charged ions has been remeasured in more detail and extended to cover the wavelength range 44.3 to 910.5 A by the use of synchrotron radiation. In addition, the contribution of multiple ionization to the cross sections has been measured allowing total photoionization cross sections to be obtained below 250 A. The results have been made absolute by normalization to previously measured data. The use of synchrotron radiation has enabled measurements of the continuum cross section to be made between the numerous autoionizing resonances that occur near the ionization thresholds. This in turn has allowed a more critical comparison of the various theoretical estimates of the cross section to be made. The series of autoionizing resonances leading to the 4-P state of the oxygen ion have been observed for the first time in an ionization type experiment and their positions compared with both theory and previous photographic recordings.

Low authority-threshold control for large flexible structures

An improved active control strategy for the vibration control of large flexible structures is presented. A minimum force, low authority-threshold controller is developed to bring a system with or without known external disturbances back into an 'allowable' state manifold over a finite time interval. The concept of a constrained, or allowable feedback form of the controller is introduced that reflects practical hardware implementation concerns. The robustness properties of the control strategy are then assessed. Finally, examples are presented which highlight the key points made within the paper.

Vertical displacement threshold sensitivity along the horizontal meridian as a function of stimulus rate, duration, and length

Four independent variables of visual perception during binocular viewing were studied. In 24 observers, the vertical displacement threshold (DT) sensitivity along the horizontal meridian was determined as a function of the rate, duration, and length of the stimulus. It was found that the DT increases with an increased angular separation of the stimulus image from the fovea (i.e., the stimulus must move farther in order to be correctly discriminated as having moved). In addition, it was found that the sensitivity to the stimulus displacement increases with increasing of the stimulus length, duration, and/or angular rate. These findings are related to the design optimization of dynamic attitude displays and symbology for aircraft.

Polarization asymmetry in two-electron photodetachment - A cogent test of the ionization threshold law

A very sensitive test of the electron-atom ionization threshold law is suggested: for spin-aligned heavy negative ions it consists of measuring the polarization asymmetry A(PA) coming from double detachment by left- versus right-circularly polarized light. The respective yields are worked out for the Te(-) (5p)5 2P(3/2) ion. The Coulomb-dipole theory predicts A(PA) to be the ratio of two oscillating functions in sharp contrast to any power law (specifically that of Wannier, 1953) for which the ratio is expected to be a smooth function of energy.

The scaling of the threshold conditions for solid propellant erosive burning

Rocket test firings were performed to measure the transition length threshold conditions while systematically varying various rocket motor parameters. These include the crossflow velocity, the chamber pressure, the propellant nonerosive burning rate, the propellant surface roughness, and the motor port diameter. The erosive burning trends with varying propellant burning rate, motor chamber pressure, and mass flow rate are consistent with published results.

Absorbed dose thresholds and absorbed dose rate limitations for studies of electron radiation effects on polyetherimides

The threshold values of total absorbed dose for causing changes in tensile properties of a polyetherimide film and the limitations of the absorbed dose rate for accelerated-exposure evaluation of the effects of electron radiation in geosynchronous orbit were studied. Total absorbed doses from 1 kGy to 100 MGy and absorbed dose rates from 0.01 MGy/hr to 100 MGy/hr were investigated, where 1 Gy equals 100 rads. Total doses less than 2.5 MGy did not significantly change the tensile properties of the film whereas doses higher than 2.5 MGy significantly reduced elongation-to-failure. There was no measurable effect of the dose rate on the tensile properties for accelerated electron exposures.

Morphological study of near threshold fatigue crack growth in a coarse grain aluminum alloy

Fatigue crack propagation in the near-threshold region has been studied in coarse grain Al 7029 alloy. Over eighty percent of the crack surfaces are planar areas parallel to either 100-oriented or 111-oriented planes. The 100-plane crack surfaces show 'pine tree' morphological features formed by slip on two sets of intersecting planes. The 111-plane crack surfaces were planar and shiny. They were formed primarily by slip on a single dominant 111-oriented slip plane with sparse and very light secondary slip markings. Crack growth rates were measured and correlated with Delta-K.

Photodetachment cross sections of negative ions - The range of validity of the Wigner threshold law

The threshold behavior of the photodetachment cross section of negative ions as a function of photon frequency is usually described by the Wigner law. This paper reports the results of a model calculation using the zero-core-contribution (ZCC) approximation. Theoretical expressions for the leading correction to the Wigner law are developed, giving the range of validity of the Wigner law and the expected accuracy. The results are relevant to extraction of electron affinities from experimental photodetachment data.

Monolithically integrated two-dimensional arrays of optoelectronic threshold devices for neural network applications

A monolithic 10 x 10 two-dimensional array of 'optical neuron' optoelectronic threshold elements for neural network applications has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Overall array dimensions are 5 x 5 mm, while the individual neurons, composed of an LED that is driven by a double-heterojunction bipolar transistor, are 250 x 250 microns. The overall integrated structure exhibited semiconductor-controlled rectifier characteristics, with a breakover voltage of 75 V and a reverse-breakdown voltage of 60 V; this is attributable to the parasitic p-n-p transistor which exists as a result of the sharing of the same n-AlGaAs collector between the transistors and the LED.

The estimation of convective rainfall by area integrals. I - The theoretical and empirical basis. II - The height-area rainfall threshold (HART) method

A theory is developed which establishes the basis for the use of rainfall areas within present thresholds as a measure of either the instantaneous areawide rain rate of convective storms or the total volume of rain from an individual storm over its lifetime. The method is based upon the existence of a well-behaved pdf of rain rate either from the many storms at one instant or from a single storm during its life. The generality of the instantaneous areawide method was examined by applying it to quantitative radar data sets from the GARP Tropical Atlantic Experiment for South Africa, Texas, and Darwin (Australia). It is shown that the pdf's developed for each of these areas are consistent with the theory.

Demagnetization effects on forward and reverse thresholds of M-R memory elements

A refinement in the way hard-axis demagnetizing effects are treated in multilayer M-R memory elements brings experimental and calculated results into agreement for both the forward and reverse switching thresholds. In the improved model, the nonuniform rotation of the magnetization in the elements because of edge pinning is taken into account. The demagnetizing fields are treated as corrections to the hard-axis word field rather than an addition to the anisotropy constant.

High-resolution threshold photoionization of N2O

Pulsed field ionization (PFI) has been used in conjunction with a coherent VUV source to obtain high-resolution threshold photoelectron spectra for the (000), (010), (020), and (100) vibrational states of the N2O(+) cation. Simulations for the rotational profiles of each vibronic level were obtained by fitting the Buckingham-Orr-Sichel equations using accurate spectroscopic constants for the ground states of the neutral and the ion. The relative branch intensities are interpreted in terms of the partial waves of the outgoing photoelectron to which the ionic core is coupled and in terms of the angular momentum transferred to the core.

Kanerva's sparse distributed memory with multiple hamming thresholds

If the stored input patterns of Kanerva's Sparse Distributed Memory (SDM) are highly correlated, utilization of the storage capacity is very low compared to the case of uniformly distributed random input patterns. We consider a variation of SDM that has a better storage capacity utilization for correlated input patterns. This approach uses a separate selection threshold for each physical storage address or hard location. The selection of the hard locations for reading or writing can be done in parallel of which SDM implementations can benefit.

State-selected chemical reaction dynamics at the S matrix level - Final-state specificities of near-threshold processes at low and high energies

State-to-state reaction probabilities are found to be highly final-state specific at state-selected threshold energies for the reactions O + H2 yield OH + H and H + H2 yield H2 + H. The study includes initial rotational states with quantum numbers 0-15, and the specificity is especially dramatic for the more highly rotationally excited reactants. The analysis is based on accurate quantum mechanical reactive scattering calculations. Final-state specificity is shown in general to increase with the rotational quantum number of the reactant diatom, and the trends are confirmed for both zero and nonzero values of the total angular momentum.

Network problem threshold

Network transmission errors such as collisions, CRC errors, misalignment, etc. are statistical in nature. Although errors can vary randomly, a high level of errors does indicate specific network problems, e.g. equipment failure. In this project, we have studied the random nature of collisions theoretically as well as by gathering statistics, and established a numerical threshold above which a network problem is indicated with high probability.
