Second-Generation Micro-Spec: A Compact Spectrometer for Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Space Missions

Micro-Spec is a direct-detection spectrometer which integrates all the components of a diffraction-grating spectrometer onto a ≈ 10-sq.cm chip through the use of superconducting microstrip transmission lines on a single- crystal silicon substrate. The second generation of Micro-Spec is being designed to operate with a spectral re- solution of at least 512 in the far-infrared and submillimeter (420–540 GHz, 714–555 μm) wavelength range, a band of interest for NASA's experiment for cryogenic large-aperture intensity mapping called EXCLAIM. EXCLAIM will be a balloon-borne telescope that is being designed to map the emission of redshifted carbon monoxide and singly-ionized carbon lines over a redshift range 0 < z < 3.5 and it will be the first demonstration of the Micro-Spec technology in a space-like environment. This work reviews the status of the Micro-Spec design for the EXCLAIM telescope, with emphasis on the spectrometer's two-dimensional diffractive region, through which light of different wavelengths is focused on kinetic inductance detectors along the instrument focal plane. An optimization process is used to generate a geometrical configuration of the diffractive region that satisfies l range and performance. An initial optical design optimized for n terms of geometric layout, spectral purity and efficiency.

Near-infrared colors of submillimeter-selected galaxies

We report on deep near-infrared (NIR)observations of submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) with the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRC) on the Keck I telescope. We have identified K-band candidate counterparts for 12 out of 15 sources in the SCUBA Cluster Lens Survey. Three SMGs remain nondetections with K-band limits of K > 23 mag, corrected for lensing. Compensating for lensing, we find a median magnitudeof K = 22 ± 1 mag for the SMG population, but the range of NIR flux densities spans more than a factor of 400.

A compact 600 GHz electronically tunable vector measurement system for submillimeter wave imaging

A compact submillimeter wave transmission/reflection measurement system has been demonstrated at 560-635 GHz, with electronic tuning over the entire band. Maximum dynamic range measured at a single frequency is 100 dB (60 dB typical), and typical phase noise is less than +/- 1°. By using a frequency steerable lens at the source output and mixer input, the frequency agility of the system can be used to scan the source and receive beams, resulting in near realtime imaging capability using only a single pixel

A Novel Noncontacting Waveguide Backshort for Submillimeter Wave Frequencies

A novel noncontacting waveguide backshort has been developed which provides excellent performance. It consists of a metallic bar with rectangular or circular holes. It has the advantage of being mechanically rugged and readily fabricated using a variety of methods for frequencies up to the high submillimeter wave range.

The Submillimeter-Wave Spectrum of Isotopic Methyl Cyanide

The laboratory submillimeter-wave rotational spectrum of the 13 CH 3 CN, CH 3 13 CN, and the CH 3 C 15 N isotopomers of methyl cyanide has been observed in natural abundance in the 294 to 607 GHz region. The maximum J and K values are 34 an 14, respectively. Fifteen additional CH 3 CN transitions up to K=21 were also measured. The transitions of all four species are fitted to a symmetric top Hamiltonian and the rotation and distortion constants are determined. The 14 N quadropole and spin rotation are also calculated and presented. Suggested values for many other parameters which could not be directly determined from the isotope spectra are calculated from the normal species values and isotope relationships. The determined and calculated constants should predict the spectrum of the three isotopomers to well over 1 THz accurately enough for astronomical assignments.

Ice Cloud Observations and Science using Submillimeter-Wave Radiometry

Submillimeter-wave radiometers provide vital information on ice clouds and precipitation. These data are key for improving weather forecasting, particularly for disruptive winter storms, and for better understanding climate. Our airborne radiometer will provide data that will allow us to better use data from upcoming space missions with these types of sensors.
