Detecting Dwarf Galaxies Around NGC 55

In order to improve our understanding of the satellite populations of low-mass galaxies, the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) – DEEP Survey is performing a search for satellites around the isolated, low-mass galaxy, NGC 55. As part of this search, we characterize our dwarf galaxy detection sensitivity by injecting artificial dwarf galaxies into our data set and measuring the fraction that we can recover. Additionally, we inject and recover artificial dwarfs to test how the blending of resolved stars affects the detection of dwarf galaxies. We inject 650 artificial dwarfs across 26 DELVE-DEEP coadded images of the NGC 55 halo and use the software tool, Source Extractor, to perform source recovery. A dwarf-search pipeline is then run on our dwarf-injected catalogs, utilizing the photutils function, find peaks, and detections are recorded as a function of dwarf size and luminosity. Our results demonstrate that we are most sensitive to large, bright dwarf galaxies, and our sensitivity begins to decrease as we approach DELVE-DEEP’s detection limit or blending causes significant reductions in recovered magnitude. We also find that our results are hindered by the limitations of star-galaxy separation applied to distant, faint sources, which is possibly a consequence of the blending of small star clusters within dwarf galaxies.

Electrically Engaged UnduLation (EEL) Marine Energy System

Current technologies at the forefront of instrumentation for ocean observation through acoustic mapping are powered by batteries that cannot achieve the lasting durations required for high-resolution measurements. Pyro-E has designed an Electrically Engaged unduLation (EEL) system capable of in situ energy harvest and deployment in sub-sea configurations. By extracting kinetic energy from the ocean, EEL proposes to provide power output ranging from 1 mW to 1,000 mW. Such a magnitude of power can sustain active instrumentation with onboard processing of data and over-the-horizon telemetry. Pyro-E and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have utilized software tools and powerful computing resources to develop a techno-economic design of the EEL capable of harvesting 5 W. The material response of the EEL under simulated hydromechanical loads is described through time-accurate predictions. All physical tests were conducted by Pyro-E to guide simulations at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Integrated Dynamic Facade Control with an Agent-based Architecture for Commercial Buildings

Dynamic façades have significant technical potential to minimize heating, cooling, and lighting energy use and peak electric demand in the perimeter zone of commercial buildings, but the performance of these systems is reliant on being able to balance complex trade-offs between solar control, daylight admission, comfort, and view over the life of the installation. As the context for controllable energy-efficiency technologies grows more complex with the increased use of intermittent renewable energy resources on the grid, it has become increasingly important to look ahead towards more advanced approaches to integrated systems control in order to achieve optimum life-cycle performance at a lower cost. This study examines the feasibility of a model predictive control system for low-cost autonomous dynamic façades. A system architecture designed around lightweight, simple agents is proposed. The architecture accommodates whole building and grid level demands through its modular, hierarchical approach. Automatically-generated models for computing window heat gains, daylight illuminance, and discomfort glare are described. The open source Modelica and JModelica software tools were used to determine the optimum state of control given inputs of window heat gains and lighting loads for a 24-hour optimization horizon. Penalty functions for glare and view/ daylight quality were implemented as constraints. The control system was tested on a low-power controller (1.4 GHz single core with 2 GB of RAM) to evaluate feasibility. The target platform is a low-cost ($35/unit) embedded controller with 1.2 GHz dual-core cpu and 1 GB of RAM. Configuration and commissioning of the curtainwall unit was designed to be largely plug and play with minimal inputs required by the manufacturer through a web-based user interface. An example application was used to demonstrate optimal control of a three-zone electrochromic window for a south-facing zone. The overall approach was deemed to be promising. Further engineering is required to enable scalable, turnkey solutions.

PHASM: A Toolkit for Creating AI Surrogate Models within Legacy Codebases

PHASM (“Parallel Hardware viA Surrogate Models”) is a software toolkit for creating AI-based surrogate models of scientific code. AI-based surrogate models are widely used for creating fast and inverse simulations. PHASM anticipates an additional future use case: adapting legacy code to modern hardware. While data centers are investing in heterogeneous hardware such as GPUs and FPGAs, many established scientific codebases remain unable to take advantage of the hardware’s higher parallelism without undergoing a costly rewrite. An alternative is to train a AI-based surrogate model to mimic computationally intensive functions in the code, and run the surrogate instead. PHASM formalizes a development lifecycle for such surrogate models, including discovering functions amenable to replacement with a surrogate model, predicting the resulting performance, identifying the function’s space of inputs and outputs, binding the model to the code, and managing model versions. A suite of software tools for facilitating these steps was written and validated against a set of model problems.

DEEPER: An Intergrated Platform for Deeper Roots

Crops with deeper roots would have multiple benefits, including better drought tolerance, reduced requirement for nitrogen fertilizer, and better sequestration of atmospheric CO 2 . DEEPER is an integrated platform of phenomic, genomic, and in silico technologies to generate maize lines with deeper roots. DEEPER is: LEADER (Leaf Elemental Accumulation from Deep Roots) is a breakthrough technology to nondestructively measure rooting depth by using the plant itself as a sensor. LEADER uses handheld X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry to quantify foliar accumulation of elements that are differentially distributed in the soil profile. LEADER is nondestructive and is orders of magnitude cheaper, faster, and more precise than any competing assay of rooting depth in the field. LEADER is able to distinguish deep-rooted from shallow-rooted maize lines in the field without the need for costly and noisy soil coring. RootRobot/DIRT3D, to automatically phenotype root architecture in any field, combining RootRobot, a mechatronics platform to excavate, clean, section, and image mature root crowns, with DIRT3D, software to quantify architectural traits in 3D. Anatomics, a high-throughput platform to phenotype root anatomy, combining LAT 2.0, a technology for 3D imaging of root anatomy and composition, with RootScan3D, software to automatically extract 3D anatomical and cell wall composition metrics from LAT 2.0 output. Using this platform we discovered two novel root traits, parenchyma cell wall thickness and multiseriate cortical sclerenchyma, that improve rooting depth and drought tolerance in maize and wheat. OpenSimRoot/Deep, software to simulate root interaction with hard subsoils. Using this platform we discovered novel concepts regarding how to increase crop rooting depth by modulating how individual root axes respond to hard soil. DeepGenes, a toolkit of genes, parent lines, and genomic selection strategies to enable breeding hybrids with deeper roots. We discovered 3 novel root genes that increase rooting depth in maize and wheat. DEEPER discovered novel root phenotypes for deeper rooting, and delivered validated ideotypes for deeper-rooted maize; novel technologies to rapidly assess root depth, root architecture and anatomy in field-grown plants; novel software tools for root modeling and 3D image analysis of root architecture and anatomy; and validated genes and genomic selection models to deploy traits for deeper rooting in maize breeding. Each DEEPER technology is transformative in its own right, and exceeds existing technologies. They are mutually synergistic, deployable for field-grown plants, and are ready for application. The phenotyping and modeling technologies are readily applicable to many crops, and genetic leads in maize may have utility in other grasses. Taken as a whole they represent a transformative platform to develop deeper-rooted crops, with greater drought tolerance, reduced fertilizer requirement, and greater carbon sequestration.

Deep Learning Prediction of Protein Complex Structures

Proteins interact to form protein complex to carry out biological functions such as catalytic chemical reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop computational methods to predict protein-protein interaction and the structures of protein complexes to study and enhance protein function. In this project, we successfully developed several deep learning methods to predict inter-protein contacts and the reinforcement learning and optimization methods to reconstruct protein complex structures from predicted inter-chain contacts. The methods were integrated with the MULTICOM protein complex structure prediction system and applied to predict the complex structures of biomass production-related proteins of green algae. During the two and a half years of research and development, all the specific milestones of the project were achieved successfully. 16 publications/manuscripts were produced. 10 software tools were developed. A patent application was submitted. Our MULTICOM predictors leveraging some tools developed in this project were ranked among the top predictors in the 15th Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction (CASP15) in 2022.

PathTrace and MPVEASI: A Path Analysis Comparative Validation Study

Developed in 2018, PathTrace is a software package built with the intention of making path analysis simple and intuitive. PathTrace is a top-down pathway analysis software where a user is able to explore vulnerable pathways into a facility. The intention of utilizing a software tool like PathTrace is to characterize an existing physical protection system (PPS) and to upgrade the system to achieve a high level of response interruption, or probability of interruption (P I ) of the adversary. There are four steps for conducting path analysis using PathTrace. The first step is to identify an image to use to build the model and scale the model within PathTrace using a section of known distance (wall or fence perimeter, for example). The scaling process will produce a grid of cells through which the user is able to build a model. The second step is to fill out the grid of cells with four categories of materials: Barriers, Detection Areas, Jumps, and Targets. These materials apply associated delay and detection values to the cells in which they are applied. The third step is to represent the adversary and response forces. The adversaries are represented by their capabilities in interacting with the materials identified in step two, and the response is represented by how quickly they will be able to respond to an adversary attack. Finally, the user is able to take all of the information from the previous three steps and perform a Most Vulnerable Path (MVP) analysis. In this stage, the user is able to visualize vulnerable adversary pathways and reason about how to upgrade these pathways to provide a high level of P I .

Acceptance criteria for in situ surveillance of MSR materials based on thermally-loaded mechanical test articles

This report describes practices and acceptance test procedures for designing, running, and maintaining a material surveillance program in a future operating molten salt reactor. The programs described here rely on test data from passively actuated mechanical test articles inserted into critical regions of the reactor and periodically removed for out-of-reactor testing. The report defines definite acceptance procedures, based on the results of these tests, to determine whether a component can continue to operate accounting for the accumulation of environmentally-assisted mechanical damage in the component materials to date, and extrapolated out through the next inspection period. Additionally, the report describes work on a software tool implementing many of the surveillance methods and procedures described here and progress on simplified methods for inferring damage accumulation in the test articles, based on out-of-reactor thermal cycling, that do not rely on sophisticated numerical analysis.
