Instrumentation for space flight experiments

The selection of measurement systems for experiments conducted in the context of a space flight must be guided by the criteria applicable to any scientific study requiring objective measurements of physiological variables. Steps fundamental to the process of choosing the best instrumentation system are identified and the key factors in matching the operational characteristics of the instrumentation to its intended use are discussed. Special problems in obtaining data from nonhuman primates, whether restrained or unrestrained, are explored. Choices for data processing are evaluated as well as the use of prototype flight tests and simulations to assess future life science experiments for spacelab or payloads for the space shuttle biomedical scientific satellite.

Approach to Spacelab Payload mission management

The nucleus of the approach to Spacelab Payload mission management is the establishment of a single point of authority for the entire payload on a given mission. This single point mission manager will serve as a 'broker' between the individual experiments and the STS, negotiating agreements by two-part interaction. The payload mission manager, along with a small support team, will represent the users in negotiating use of STS accommodations. He will provide the support needed by each individual experimenter to meet the scientific, technological, and applications objectives of the mission with minimum cost and maximum efficiency. The investigator will assume complete responsibility for his experiment hardware definition and development and will take an active role in the integration and operation of his experiment.

Evaluating NASA Technology Programs in Terms of Private Sector Impacts

NASA is currently developing spacecraft technology for application to NASA scientific missions, military missions and commercial missions which are part of or form the basis of private sector business ventures. The justification of R&D programs that lead to spacecraft technology improvements encompasses the establishment of the benefits in terms of improved scientific knowledge that may result from new and/or improved NASA science missions, improved cost effectiveness of NASA and DOD missions and new or improved services that may be offered by the private sector (for example communications satellite services). It is with the latter of these areas that attention will be focused upon. In particular, it is of interest to establish the economic value of spacecraft technology improvements to private sector communications satellite business ventures. It is proposed to assess the value of spacecraft technology improvements in terms of the changes in cash flow and present value of cash flows, that may result from the use of new and/or improved spacecraft technology for specific types of private sector communications satellite missions (for example domestic point-to-point communication or direct broadcasting). To accomplish this it is necessary to place the new and/or improved technology within typical business scenarios and estimate the impacts of technical performance upon business and financial performance.

Tethered satellite design

The capability of the satellite to perform a variety of space operations to be accomplished from the shuttle is reviewed considering use of the satellite with man-in-loop and closed loop modes and deployment (toward or away from Earth, up to 100 km), stationkeeping, retrieval and control of the satellite. Scientific payloads are to be used to perform experiments and scientific investigation for applications such as magnetometry, electrodynamics, atmospheric science, chemical release, communications, plasmaphysics, dynamic environment, and power and thrust generation. The TSS-S will be reused for at least 3 missions after reconfiguration and refurbishment by changing the peculiar mission items such as thermal control, fixed boom for experiments, aerodynamic tail for yaw attitude control, external skin, experiments, and any other feature. The TSS-S is to be composed of three modules in order to allow independent integration of a single module and to facilitate the refurbishment and reconfiguration between flights. The three modules are service, auxiliary propulsion, and payload modules.

PISCES 2 users manual

PISCES 2 is a programming environment and set of extensions to Fortran 77 for parallel programming. It is intended to provide a basis for writing programs for scientific and engineering applications on parallel computers in a way that is relatively independent of the particular details of the underlying computer architecture. This user's manual provides a complete description of the PISCES 2 system as it is currently implemented on the 20 processor Flexible FLEX/32 at NASA Langley Research Center.

Photopolymerization Of Levitated Droplets

Experimental containerless process combines two established techniques to make variety of polymeric microspheres. In single step, electrostatically-levitated monomer droplets polymerized by ultraviolet light. Faster than multiple-step emulsion polymerization process used to make microspheres. Droplets suspended in cylindrical quadrupole electrostatic levitator. Alternating electrostatic field produces dynamic potential along axis. Process enables tailoring of microspheres for medical, scientific, and industrial applications.

Innovative uses of tethers in space

Potential uses of tethers in the fields of science, transportation, electrodynamics, and space exploration are discussed. Special attention is given to the use of tethers for scientific and planetary application, with descriptions of the type of measurements to be performed in a given science field or a planetary body and the particular method of tether use. Experiments proposed regarding the use of tethers will address some of the pending issues regarding the use of tethers, such as the tether deployment and control laws, the recoil, electrodynamic effects, the strength and survivability of tethers in the lower atmosphere, the stability of a tethered platform, and the propulsion through momentum exchange.

Basic mathematical function libraries for scientific computation

Ada packages implementing selected mathematical functions for the support of scientific and engineering applications were written. The packages provide the Ada programmer with the mathematical function support found in the languages Pascal and FORTRAN as well as an extended precision arithmetic and a complete complex arithmetic. The algorithms used are fully described and analyzed. Implementation assumes that the Ada type FLOAT objects fully conform to the IEEE 754-1985 standard for single binary floating-point arithmetic, and that INTEGER objects are 32-bit entities. Codes for the Ada packages are included as appendixes.

Excimer laser processing of backside-illuminated CCDS

An excimer laser is used to activate previously implanted dopants on the backside of a backside-illuminated CCD. The controlled ion implantation of the backside and subsequent thin layer heating and recrystallization by the short wavelength pulsed excimer laser simultaneously activates the dopant and anneals out implant damage. This improves the dark current response, repairs defective pixels and improves spectral response. This process heats a very thin layer of the material to high temperatures on a nanosecond time scale while the bulk of the delicate CCD substrate remains at low temperature. Excimer laser processing backside-illuminated CCD's enables salvage and utilization of otherwise nonfunctional components by bringing their dark current response to within an acceptable range. This process is particularly useful for solid state imaging detectors used in commercial, scientific and government applications requiring a wide spectral response and low light level detection.

Adjustable lossless image compression based on a natural splitting of an image into drawing, shading, and fine-grained components

The compression, or efficient coding, of single band or multispectral still images is becoming an increasingly important topic. While lossy compression approaches can produce reconstructions that are visually close to the original, many scientific and engineering applications require exact (lossless) reconstructions. However, the most popular and efficient lossless compression techniques do not fully exploit the two-dimensional structural links existing in the image data. We describe here a general approach to lossless data compression that effectively exploits two-dimensional structural links of any length. After describing in detail two main variants on this scheme, we discuss experimental results.

Software support for irregular and loosely synchronous problems

A large class of scientific and engineering applications may be classified as irregular and loosely synchronous from the perspective of parallel processing. We present a partial classification of such problems. This classification has motivated us to enhance FORTRAN D to provide language support for irregular, loosely synchronous problems. We present techniques for parallelization of such problems in the context of FORTRAN D.

Statistical analysis of trigonometric parallaxes

The present project was initiated with two specific medium-term goals: first, to develop a novel approach, based on global modeling and maximum likelihood, to the study of databases of stellar data, with specific attention to the results to be obtained by the Hipparcos mission; and second, to apply and test the methodology developed to existing ground-based data. The long-term goal was of course to integrate the methodology and the ground-based data into a global study of the results of the Hipparcos mission, which were expected to be made available in 1995 or 1996. The closing of the project is due to the recent change of home institution of the PI, who has moved from the University of Illinois to Johns Hopkins University. As a consequence of this move, the three scientists involved in this project will be in close proximity, thereby hopefully improving their ability to collaborate and increasing the productivity of the project. Continued funding for the project has been requested from Johns Hopkins University. This report describes briefly the results obtained so far both on the technical aspect of software development and on the scientific side of applications to existing ground-based data. Significant progress has been made on both counts, with several papers published in (or submitted to) refereed journals and in conference proceedings. Because it is hoped that the project can be successfully continued with NASA support, the report of the progress in each area includes also an assessment of how the current results fit in the expected continuation of the project. Our results to date include: code development (essentially completed); a detailed study of the kinematics and dynamics of stars escaping from the Hyades cluster, relevant to the question of membership in the Hyades; a study of the kinematics and luminosity calibration of nearby dwarfs; an assessment of the quality of the photometry included in the Hipparcos Input Catalog; and two studies of properties of nearby clusters, including a moving-cluster determination of the distance to Praesepe. The bibliography includes three papers submitted to refereed journals, two of which have already been published, and four contributions to conference proceedings. Finally, the work so far has also provided a very good introduction to stellar dynamics and astrometry for an undergraduate student, with educational benefits that had not been foreseen in the original proposal.
