Effects of dilution in ionic liquid supercapacitors

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are synthetic electrolytes that have a large electrochemical stability window, making them attractive candidates for electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) applications. Due to their high viscosities and low ionic conductivities, RTILs are often diluted with organic solvent for practical use. Here, we study the effects of dilution on the performance of RTIL EDLCs using a simple mean-field model. We find that dilution diminishes the unfavorable hysteresis that results from a spontaneous surface charge separation (SSCS). As a result, the RTIL concentration can be used to modulate the proximity to the SSCS transition, and maximize capacitance. The interplay between the concentration and the correlation strength gives rise to complex zero-potential phase behavior, including a tricritical point and a λ-line, very similar to the Blume–Capel dilute Ising model. Additionally, electrodes that are solvophilic aid in the prevention of SSCS by drawing solvent molecules to the electrode and displacing ions. Solvophilic electrodes give rise to a phase transition at finite potential where the surface charge rapidly increases with a small increase in potential, leading to a substantial increase in capacitance and energy storage.

Role of tilt grain boundaries on the structural integrity of WSe 2 monolayers

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are potential materials for future optoelectronic devices. Grain boundaries (GBs) can significantly influence the optoelectronic properties of TMDC materials. Here, we have investigated the mechanical characteristics of tungsten diselenide (WSe 2 ) monolayers and failure process with symmetric tilt GBs using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. In particular, the effects of topological defects, loading rates, and temperatures are investigated. We considered nine different grain boundary structures of monolayer WSe 2 , of which six are armchair (AC) tilt structures, and the remaining three are zigzag (ZZ) tilt structures. Our results indicate that both tensile strength and fracture strain of WSe 2 with symmetric tilt GBs decrease as the temperature increases. We revealed an interfacial phase transition for high-angle GBs reduces the elastic strain energy within the interface at finite temperatures. Furthermore, brittle cracking is the dominant failure mode in the WSe 2 monolayer with tilted GBs. WSe 2 GB structures showed more strain rate sensitivity at high temperatures than at low temperatures.

The impact of G-quadruplex dynamics on inter-tetrad electronic couplings: a hybrid computational study

The G-quadruplex is a fascinating nucleic acid motif with implications in biology, medicine, and nanotechnologies. G-quadruplexes can form in the telomeres at the edges of chromosomes and in other guanine-rich regions of the genome. They can also be engineered for exploitation as biological materials for nanodevices. Their higher stiffness and higher charge transfer rates make them better candidates in nanodevices than duplex DNA. For the development of molecular nanowires, it is important to optimize electron transport along the wire axis. One powerful basis to do so is by manipulating the structure, based on known effects that structural changes have on electron transport. Here, for this work, we investigate such effects, by a combination of classical simulations of the structure and dynamics and quantum calculations of electronic couplings. We find that this structure–function relationship is complex. A single helix shape parameter alone does not embody such complexity, but rather a combination of distances and angles between stacked bases influences charge transfer efficiency. By analyzing linear combinations of shape descriptors for different topologies, we identify the structural features that most affect charge transfer efficiency. We discuss the transferability of the proposed model and the limiting effects of inherent flexibility.

Electrolyte clusters as hydrogen sponges: diffusion Monte Carlo simulations

Here, we carry out Diffusion Monte Carlo simulations of up to five hydrogen molecules aggregated with two Stockmayer clusters that solvate a single lithium ion. The first one contains six point dipole solvent particles with parameters tuned to emulate nitromethane. The second cluster is a relative large system investigated recently [G. DiEmma, S. Kalette, and E. Curotto, Chem. Phys. Lett. 2019, 725, 80–86]. In both cases we find that the aggregated hydrogen molecules perturb significantly the ground state of the host cluster and form a distorted tetrahedral cage around the Li + ion. The fifth hydrogen molecule is absorbed by the larger Stockmayer cluster while remaining in the proximity of the solvated charge.

Theoretical study of the CO 2 –O 2 van der Waals complex: potential energy surface and applications

A four-dimensional-potential energy surface (4D-PES) of the atmospherically relevant carbon dioxide–oxygen molecule (CO 2 –O 2 ) van der Waals complex is mapped using the ab initio explicitly correlated coupled cluster method with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations (UCCSD(T)-F12b), and extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit using the cc-pVTZ-F12/cc-pVQZ-F12 bases and the l –3 formula. An analytic representation of the 4D-PES was fitted using the method of interpolating moving least squares (IMLS). These calculations predict that the most stable configuration of CO 2 –O 2 complex corresponds to a planar slipped-parallel structure with a binding energy of V ~ –243 cm –1 . Another isomer is found on the PES, corresponding to a non-planar cross-shaped structure, with V ~ –218 cm –1 . The transition structure connecting the two minima is found at V ~ –211 cm –1 . We also performed comparisons with some CO 2 –X van der Waals complexes. Moreover, we provide a SAPT analysis of this molecular system. Then, we discuss the complexation induced shifts of CO 2 and O 2 . Afterwards, this new 4D-PES is employed to compute the second virial coefficient including temperature dependence. A comparison between quantities obtained in our calculations and those from experiments found close agreement attesting to the high quality of the PES and to the importance of considering a full description of the anisotropic potential for the derivation of thermophysical properties of CO 2 –O 2 mixtures.

Transition-state correlations for predicting thermochemistry of adsorbates and surface reactions

Estimating thermochemical properties from linear correlations may provide a pathway to circumvent expensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations for quantities such as pre-exponentials and temperature corrections to DFT energies. Here, in this work, we construct thermochemical scaling relations between C 1 –C 6 n-alkanes in the gas phase and adsorbed alkyl chains extending from several transition metal surfaces, and examine changes in the slope and fit between metals and adsorption sites. We subsequently add –OH, –NH 2 , C$=$O, and C$=$C functional groups to the C 1 –C 6 molecules and demonstrate strong linear correlations for thermochemistry across all species. We broaden the correlations to incorporate transition states of C 1 –C 6 n-alkane dehydrogenation reactions, where thermochemistry for computationally prohibitive transition-state calculations can be quickly assessed. Additionally, we rationalize the linearity of thermochemical correlations based on the composition of the homologous series and theoretical assessments. As an application of the correlations, we estimate pre-exponentials for elementary surface reactions of ethane and propane hydrogenolysis on Ru(0001), which is of relevance to plastic hydrogenolysis. Depending on kinetically important steps, entropic contributions may be necessary to include in certain reaction mechanisms; in contrasting examples, entropies are found to be relatively insignificant for ethane hydrogenolysis but pertinent for propane hydrogenolysis.

Elucidation of complex triplet excited state dynamics in Pd(ii) biladiene tetrapyrroles

Pd(II) biladienes have been developed over the last five years as non-aromatic oligotetrapyrrole complexes that support a rich triplet photochemistry. In this work, we have undertaken the first detailed photophysical interrogation of three homologous Pd(II) biladienes bearing different combinations of methyl- and phenyl-substituents on the frameworks’ sp 3 -hybridized meso-carbon (i.e., the 10-position of the biladiene framework). These experiments have revealed unexpected excited-state dynamics that are dependent on the wavelength of light used to excite the biladiene. More specifically, transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that higher-energy excitation (λ exc ~ 350–500 nm) led to an additional lifetime (i.e., an extra photophysical process) compared to experiments carried out following excitation into the lowest-energy excited states (λ exc = 550 nm). Each Pd(II) biladiene complex displayed an intersystem crossing lifetime on the order of tens of ps and a triplet lifetime of ~20 μs, regardless of the excitation wavelength. However, when higher-energy light is used to excite the complexes, a new lifetime on the order of hundreds of ps is observed. The origin of the ‘extra’ lifetime observed upon higher energy excitation was revealed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). These efforts demonstrated that excitation into higher-energy metal-mixed-charge-transfer excited states with high spin–orbit coupling to higher energy metal-mixed-charge-transfer triplet states leads to the additional excitation deactivation pathway. Furthermore, the results of this work demonstrate that Pd(II) biladienes support a unique triplet photochemistry that may be exploited for development of new photochemical schemes and applications.

CO 2 coverage on Pd catalysts accelerates oxygen removal in oxy-combustion systems

Oxy-combustion systems result in enriched CO 2 in exhaust gases; however, the utilization of the concentrated CO 2 stream from oxy-combustion is limited by remnant O 2 . CH 4 oxidation using Pd catalysts has been found to have high O 2 -removal efficiency. Here, in this study, the effect of excess CO 2 in the feed stream on O 2 removal with CH 4 oxidation is investigated by combining experimental and theoretical approaches. Experimental results reveal complete CH 4 oxidation without any side-products, and a monotonic increase in the rate of CO 2 generation with an increase in CO 2 concentration in the feed stream. Density-functional theory calculations show that high surface coverage of CO 2 on Pd leads to a reduction in the activation energy for the initial dissociation of CH 4 into CH 3 and H, and also the subsequent oxidation reactions. A CO 2 -rich environment in oxy-combustion systems is therefore beneficial for the reduction of oxygen in exhaust gases.

One-bond 13 C– 13 C spin-coupling constants in saccharides: a comparison of experimental and calculated values by density functional theory using solid-state 13 C NMR and X-ray crystallography

Methyl aldohexopyranosides were 13 C-labeled at contiguous carbons, crystallized, and studied by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and solid-state 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to examine the degree to which density functional theory (DFT) can calculate one-bond 13C–13C spin-coupling constants ( 1 J CC ) in saccharides with sufficient accuracy to permit their use in MA'AT analysis, a newly-reported hybrid DFT/NMR method that provides probability distributions of molecular torsion angles in solution (Zhang et al., J. Phys. Chem. B, 2017, 121, 3042–3058; Meredith et al., J. Chem. Inf. Model., 2022, 62, 3135–3141). Experimental 1 J CC values in crystalline samples of the doubly 13 C-labeled compounds were measured by solid-state 13 C NMR and compared to those calculated from five different DFT models: (1) 1 J CC values calculated from single structures identical to those observed in crystalline samples by X-ray crystallography (all atom refinement); (2) 1 J CC values calculated from the single structures in (1) but after Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR); (3) 1 J CC values calculated from the single structures in (1) after DFT-optimization of hydrogen atoms only; and (4 and 5) 1 J CC values calculated in rotamers of torsion angle θ 2 (C1–C2–O2–O2H) or ω(C4–C5–C6–O6) from which either specific or generalized parameterized equations were obtained and used to calculate 1 J CC values in the specific θ 2 or ω rotamers observed in crystalline samples. Good qualitative agreement was observed between calculated 1 J CC values and those measured by solid-state 13 C NMR regardless of the DFT model, but in no cases were calculated 1 J CC values quantitative, differing (over-estimated) on average by 4–5% from experimental values. These findings, and those reported recently from solution NMR studies (Tetrault et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 2022, 126, 9506–9515), indicate that improvements in DFT calculations are needed before calculated 1 J CC values can be used directly as reliable constraints in MA'AT analyses of saccharides in solution.

Structural elucidation of polydopamine facilitated by ionic liquid solvation

Minimal understanding of the formation mechanism and structure of polydopamine (pDA) and its natural analogue, eumelanin, impedes the practical application of these versatile polymers and limits our knowledge of the origin of melanoma. The lack of conclusive structural evidence stems from the insolubility of these materials, which has spawned significantly diverse suggestions of pDA's structure in the literature. We discovered that pDA is soluble in certain ionic liquids. Using these ionic liquids (ILs) as solvents, we present an experimental methodology to solvate pDA, enabling us to identify pDA's chemical structure. The resolved pDA structure consists of self-assembled supramolecular aggregates that contribute to the increasing complexity of the polymer. The underlying molecular energetics of pDA solvation and a macroscopic picture of the disruption of the aggregates using IL solvents have been investigated, along with studies of the aggregation mechanism in water.

Engineering giant excitonic coupling in bioinspired, covalently bridged BODIPY dyads

Strong excitonic coupling in photosynthetic systems is believed to enable efficient light absorption and quantitative charge separation, motivating the development of artificial multi-chromophore arrays with equally strong or even stronger excitonic coupling. However, large excitonic coupling strengths have typically been accompanied by fast non-radiative recombination, limiting the potential of the arrays for solar energy conversion as well as other applications such as fluorescent labeling. Here, in this work, we report giant excitonic coupling leading to broad optical absorption in bioinspired BODIPY dyads that have high photostability, excited-state lifetimes at the nanosecond scale, and fluorescence quantum yields of nearly 50%. Through the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and computational modeling of a series of dyads with different linking moieties, we show that the strongest coupling is obtained with diethynylmaleimide linkers, for which the coupling occurs through space between BODIPY units with small separations and slipped co-facial orientations. Other linkers allow for broad tuning of both the relative through-bond and through-space coupling contributions and the overall strength of interpigment coupling, with a tradeoff observed in general between the strength of the two coupling mechanisms. These findings open the door to the synthesis of molecular systems that function effectively as light-harvesting antennas and as electron donors or acceptors for solar energy conversion.

The highly exothermic hydrogen abstraction reaction H 2 Te + OH → H 2 O + TeH: comparison with analogous reactions for H 2 Se and H 2 S

The “gold standard” CCSD(T) method is adopted along with the correlation consistent basis sets up to aug-cc-pV5Z-PP to study the mechanism of the hydrogen abstraction reaction H 2 Te + OH. Here, the predicted geometries and vibrational frequencies for reactants and products are in good agreement with the available experimental results. With the ZPVE corrections, the transition state in the favorable pathway of this reaction energetically lies 1.2 kcal mol -1 below the reactants, which is lower than the analogous relative energies for the H 2 Se + OH reaction (-0.7 kcal mol -1 ), the H 2 S + OH reaction (+0.8 kcal mol -1 ) and the H 2 O + OH reaction (+9.0 kcal mol -1 ). Accordingly, the exothermic reaction energies for these related reactions are predicted to be 47.8 (H 2 Te), 37.7 (H 2 Se), 27.1 (H 2 S), and 0.0 (H 2 O) kcal mol -1 , respectively. Geometrically, the low-lying reactant complexes for H 2 Te + OH and H 2 Se + OH are two-center three-electron hemibonded structures, whereas those for H 2 S + OH and H 2 O + OH are hydrogen-bonded. With ZPVE and spin–orbit coupling corrections, the relative energies for the reactant complex, transition state, product complex, and the products for the H 2 Te + OH reaction are estimated to be -13.1, -1.0, -52.0, and -52.6 kcal mol -1 , respectively. Finally, twenty-eight DFT functionals have been tested systematically to assess their ability in describing the potential energy surface of the H 2 Te + OH reaction. The best of these functionals for the corresponding energetics are -9.9, -1.4, -46.4, and -45.4 kcal mol -1 (MPWB1K), or -13.1, -2.4, -57.1, and -54.6 kcal mol -1 (M06-2X), respectively.

Single atoms and small clusters of atoms may accompany Au and Pd dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles

Here we report the presence of small clusters of atoms (<1 nm) (SCs) and single atoms (SAs) in solutions containing 1–2 nm dendrimer-encapsulated nanoparticles (DENs). Au and Pd DENs were imaged using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to identify and quantify the SAs/SCs. Two main findings have emerged from this work. First, the presence or absence of SAs/SCs depends on both the terminal functional group of the dendrimer (–NH 2 or –OH) and the elemental composition of the DENs (Au or Pd). Second, dialysis can be used to remove the majority of SAs/SCs in cases where a high density of SAs/SCs are present. The foregoing conclusions provide insights into the mechanisms for Au and Pd DEN synthesis and stability. Ultimately, these results demonstrate the need for careful characterization of systems containing nanoparticles to ensure that SAs/SCs, which may be below the detection limit of most analytical methods, are taken into consideration (especially for catalysis experiments).

Prediction of the structures and heats of formation of MO 2 , MO 3 , and M 2 O 5 for M = V, Nb, Ta, Pa

Structures for the mono-, di-, and tri-bridge isomers of M 2 O 5 as well as those for the MO 2 and MO 3 fragments for M = V, Nb, Ta, and Pa were optimized at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Single point CCSD(T) calculations extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit at the DFT geometries were used to predict the energetics. Here, the lowest energy dimer isomer was the di-bridge for M = V and Nb and the tri-bridge for M = Ta and Pa. The di-bridge isomers were predicted to be composed of MO 2 + and MO 3 - fragments, whereas the mono- and tri-bridge are two MO 2 + fragments linked by an O 2 - . The heats of formation of M 2 O 5 dimers, as well as MO 2 and MO 3 neutral and ionic species were predicted using the Feller–Peterson–Dixon (FPD) approach. The heats of formation of the MF 5 species were calculated to provide additional benchmarks. Dimerization energies to form the M 2 O 5 dimers are predicted to become more negative going down group 5 and range from -29 to -45 kcal mol -1 . The ionization energies (IEs) for VO 2 and TaO 2 are essentially the same at 8.75 eV whereas the IEs for NbO 2 and PaO 2 are 8.10 and 6.25 eV, respectively. The predicted adiabatic electron affinities (AEAs) range from 3.75 eV to 4.45 eV for the MO 3 species and vertical detachment energies from 4.21 to 4.59 eV for MO 3 - . The calculated M[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond dissociation energies increase from 143 kcal mol -1 for M = V to ~170 kcal mol -1 for M = Nb and Ta to ~200 kcal mol -1 for M = Pa. The M–O bond dissociation energies are all similar ranging from 97 to 107 kcal mol -1 . Natural bond analysis provided insights into the types of chemical bonds in terms of their ionic character. Pa 2 O 5 is predicted to behave like an actinyl species dominated by the interactions of approximately linear PaO 2 + groups.

Description of quantum interference using mixed quantum/classical theory of inelastic scattering

Manifestation of the quantum interference effect in the oscillation of scattering cross section is explored using the N 2 + O system as a case study. Calculations are carried out for two electronic PESs of the system, for various initial rotational states of N 2 , in a broad range of N 2 + O collision energies and using three theoretical methods: two versions of the approximate mixed quantum/classical theory (MQCT and AT-MQCT) and the accurate full-quantum coupled-channel method (implemented in MOLSCAT). A good agreement between different methods is observed, especially at high energies. Elastic scattering cross-sections oscillate as a function of collision energy, which is the result of quantum interference. The effects of initial rotational excitation and of the PES properties are studied in detail. For the final (thermally averaged) cross sections, both MOLSCAT and MQCT calculations predict a rather regular pattern of quantum oscillations that persist through a broad range of collision energies and expand into the low-energy regime where quantum scattering resonances are common. The difference between cross sections predicted by MQCT and MOLSCAT decreases from ~8% at low energies to ~2% at high energies. Finally, experimental data available at high collision energies are well reproduced.

Structural stability, dihydrogen bonding, and pressure-induced polymorphic transformations in hydrazine borane

Hydrazine borane (N 2 H 4 BH 3 ) has attracted considerable interest as a promising solid-state hydrogen storage material owing to its high hydrogen content and easy preparation. In this work, pressure-induced phase transitions of N 2 H 4 BH 3 were investigated using a combination of vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) up to 30 GPa. Our results showed that N 2 H 4 BH 3 exhibits remarkable structural stability in a very broad pressure region up to 15 GPa, and then two phase transitions were identified: the first one is from the ambient-pressure Pbcn phase to a Pbca phase near 15 GPa; the second is from the Pbca phase to a Pccn phase near 25 GPa. As revealed by DFT calculations, the unusual stability of N 2 H 4 BH 3 and the late phase transformations were attributed to the pressure-mediated evolutions of dihydrogen bonding frameworks, the compressibility and the enthalpies of the high-pressure polymorphs. In conclusion, our findings provide new insight into the structures and bonding properties of N 2 H 4 BH 3 that are important for hydrogen storage applications.
