Collaborative Research: Understanding Nanoparticle-Plasma Interactions in Dusty Non-Thermal Plasmas by Nanoparticle Probes and Online Aerosol Characterization

Research Objectives The goal of this research project is to understand the nature of charge interactions between plasmas and aerosol particles. Specifically, the project has the following objectives: 1) Study the effect of solid nanoparticles on properties of an atmospheric pressure plasma. 2) Study the influence of plasma density on the final charge of nanoparticles. 3) Develop a theoretical understanding of charge decay and charge dynamics in the spatial afterglow in support of experimental observations of the final charge of nanoparticles exiting a plasma.

An Online Prototype Toolset for Predicting and Optimizing P&T Performance (FY23 Status Report)

A new web-based toolset is being developed to support ongoing remediation optimization efforts and implementation of an adaptive site management strategy for the 200 West Area Pump-and-Treat (P&T) system at the Hanford Site. This toolset, comprising the well performance index tool and the well optimization pre-screening tool, will offer a user-friendly interface to predict and optimize the P&T well network’s performance at a preliminary level. Efforts in fiscal year (FY) 2023 focused on three main components: updating the existing deep learning model for predicting P&T performance, designing and developing a prototype of a web-based performance index tool, and initiating the conceptual design of the well optimization pre-screening tool. The well performance index tool is based on a pre-trained deep learning model that allows users to select a target contaminant and well screen length, then visualize the predicted performance of potential new wells across the site. The well optimization pre-screening tool includes two separate modules: the pre-computed scenario viewer, which organizes and visualizes offline optimization simulation results, and the quick analysis module, which provides real-time model prediction using user-specified well locations. In FY24, the plan is to add web-based applications to SOCRATES for both the well performance prediction tool and the optimization prescreening tool, with accompanying user and theory guides. These tools are intended to enable an accessible, easily applied, and transparent approach to remedy planning and decision-making.

Online Analytics for Remedy Support at DOE Environmental Management Sites

Environmental data is important for managing environmental restoration/waste site remediation, planning of monitoring efforts, addressing climate resilience, and engaging with stakeholders and regulators. A major challenge is how to manage the many different types and the large volume of environmental data in a way that allows practitioners and site managers to understand data implications and support decisions. The Suite Of Comprehensive Rapid Analysis Tools for Environmental Sites (SOCRATES, https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/socrates) is a web application that provides data access, visualization, and rapid analytics to help make sense of environmental data, support remedy decisions, and communicate information. Development of SOCRATES has been funded through the DOE Richland Operations Office (RL) to support communication and decision making for the Hanford Site, thus is only tied into Hanford environmental data. However, the capabilities of SOCRATES are more broadly applicable to DOE-EM sites engaged in environmental remediation and management. This report describes the work to develop mechanisms for bringing non-Hanford data into SOCRATES so that other DOE-EM sites could make use of the visualization and analysis capabilities to support communication and decision making related to managing environmental restoration/waste site remediation, optimization/exit strategies for pump-and-treat systems, planning monitoring efforts, addressing climate resilience, and/or engaging with stakeholders and regulators. The background, approach, data transfer formats, examples, and next steps for this new SOCRATES-EM software are described in this report.

EBIS Beam Intensity Online Optimization with GPTune and Offline Analysis with XGBoost

The application of machine learning techniques to accelerator research has led to significant breakthroughs in optimization strategies. This paper presents a pioneering study using a novel machine learning algorithm, GPTune, to optimize beam intensity by adjusting parameters in the EBIS injection and extraction beam lines. Our research demonstrates substantial improvements, achieving a remarkable 22% and 70% increase in beam intensity at two separate measurement locations.

Mu2e otsdaq Documentation and Online Reconstruction Analytics

This report outlines the results of the DOE-funded SULI (Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship) research completed over the summer 2024 on site at Fermilab. The project focused on the \textit{otsdaq} software responsible for data acquisition. The project included drafting updated documentation for new users including new procedures relevant for the Alma-Linux 9 operating system update, and the UPS package managing system replacement with spack (scientific software package manager). A new \textit{art} module (ReadTriggerCounts) to track trigger rates was created, with compatibility to be displayed via a Grafana server. The author also assisted in calorimeter cable installation in the detector hall.

Online System ID for Predicting Power Plant Performance Throughout Cycling Operations

This presentation represents a review of the background research conducted by NETL to apply artificial intelligence, i.e. auto-recursive algorithms and data analytics to detect leaks in utility scale boilers and laboratory power systems. The new project being funded by the Advanced Sensors and Controls Program is part of the Field Work Proposal funded in EY21 as Task 53 to demonstrate the application of these techniques on a utility scale power system.

Real Time Phasor Analytics (RTPA) and RTPA-SCR System Strength Online Tool

This presentation showcases the Real-Time Phasor Analytics (RTPA) framework for monitoring inertia and assessing system strength in power grids. RTPA is an open-source tool designed to standardize access to data from Power Management Units (PMUs) and Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs). It facilitates real-time connectivity to multiple PDCs in accordance with the IEEE C37.118-2 standard and supports asynchronous data stream integration. Additionally, RTPA can simulate a PDC server streaming C37.118-2 data and provides Python bindings for seamless interaction with the framework, eliminating the need for direct Rust programming.
