Multifunctional Surface Treatment for Self-Sterilization and CO2 Sequestration for Sustainable Space Exploration

A long-term human space presence is dependent on maintaining a safe living environment. Disinfecting surfaces is essential to protecting astronauts from potential pathogens, as well as structural components of the habitat from damaging biofilms. Developing a surface coating that utilizes readily available light has the potential to provide sterilization with additional functionality. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a commonly used photocatalyst owing to its efficiency, economic feasibility, and safety to humans. TiO2 photocatalyst modified with other metals such as copper or iron could allow for self-sterilization, photocatalytic memory, and photoreduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) to fuels on Mars. Sustainable design of the photocatalyst should account for the resources available, specifically within the Martian and Lunar regolith. This project reviews the current technologies to design a TiO2 photocatalyst which can be incorporated into a space habitat’s inner lining.

Exploration of Particle Size Engineering and Microencapsulation Technologies for Multifunctional Applications

There is a critical need for high performance materials for functional and space-based applications, including tires for exploratory rovers and external structures for landing vehicles. Novel ternary borides, such as iron aluminum boride (Fe2AlB2) and molybdenum aluminum boride (MoAlB), have emerged as potential materials for such application owing to their hardness, mechanical behavior and oxidation resistance. In this poster presentation, we will present different methods of fabricating these particles and engineering them for additive manufacturing and other related manufacturing practices. As an integral component of this study, we will demonstrate technologies to (a) synthesize these particles and (b) microencapsulate these particles with bioplastics like polylactic acid (PLA). The resulting particles will be evaluated for their processability as coatings on hydroxyapatite and Inconel particles using microstructural and flowability studies. It is expected that these particles can be used for 3D printing.

Multifunctional End Effector for Regolith Construction, Acquisition, and Transfer (MEERCAT)

Presentation prepared for ASCE Earth and Space. Presentation covers the capabilities of the MEERCAT system with videos demonstrating con ops. The MEERCAT system specs are taken from a previously STRIVES approved flyer on MEERCAT. Presentation will not be part of ASCE Earth and Space but should still be submitted through STRIVES for use with public facing business developments.

Improving Multifunctional Sorbent Technology for Carbon Dioxide Adsorption

The MultiSORB system aims to improve life support on the ISS and other craft such as the Orion capsule via new technologies that enable more efficient CO2 adsorption. This means that life support systems can function with less power and greater reliability while still processing nominal quantities of CO2. The technologies explored in this poster include the use of zeolite paste in the creation of novel geometries, along with the use of state of the art heating/cooling systems such as titanium heat pipes.

Erosion Behavior of Ti-hBN Multifunctional Coatings in A Custom-Made Planetary Test Rig at Extreme Lunar Temperatures

Spacecraft landings and takeoffs on the lunar surface, along with extreme temperature variations between day and night (-196 to 150° C), cause high-velocity dust impacts and erosion, resulting in the premature failure of structures. Ti/2 vol% hBN coatings were deposited using atmospheric (APS) and vacuum plasma spray (VPS) using cryo-milled powder feedstock to protect the structural components. The erosion performance of coatings at extreme lunar temperature regimes (-150 to 150° C) was evaluated in a custom-made planetary erosion test rig (PETR) at low (50 mph) and high impact velocities (250 mph). The mass loss of VPS coatings was reduced by 50% compared to the APS coatings and 40% compared to the Ti6Al4V substrate. The cryogenic temperature induces brittleness in the material, rendering it susceptible to extreme conditions of material loss. The particle impact-deformation behavior was captured using a high-speed camera to study the erosion mechanism. This analysis revealed chipping in substrates and brittle APS coatings, while particles rebounding and embedding were observed in VPS coatings. Energy calculations, aided by particle trajectory tracking from the high-speed camera, have conclusively shown that VPS coatings absorb 5–10% more energy than APS coatings during erosion tests. A modified erosion index was developed incorporating the fracture toughness and temperatures. New erosion models for brittle and ductile target materials are proposed for developing erosion-resistant material systems.

Multifunctional reactive inks, methods of use and manufacture thereof

In one embodiment, a method includes dispersing a plurality of particles in solution to form a dispersion and adding a stabilizing agent to the dispersion in an amount sufficient to cause the dispersion to exhibit one or more predetermined rheological properties. The particles in the dispersion are configured to complete a self-propagating and/or self-sustaining reaction upon initiation thereof. In another embodiment, a method includes depositing a material on a substrate. The material includes: a plurality of particles configured to complete a self-propagating and/or self-sustaining reaction upon initiation thereof, a solvent system, and one or more stabilizing agents.
