Impacts of hybridization and forecast errors on the probabilistic capacity credit of batteries

Battery storage is increasingly identified as being among the least-cost mix of technologies in the evolving U.S. electricity mix. This study explores the marginal capacity credit of batteries using a probabilistic, reliability-based, effective firm capacity method, which we apply for multiple battery power ratings, durations, coupling types, deployment locations, and dispatch profiles within a test system that is based on the Texas Interconnection in the year 2024. We find that the capacity credits for all battery durations depend on their ability to predict the timing of reliability events. Even 1-2 h forecast errors - resulting in early or delayed battery discharging relative to the onset of a reliability event - lead pronounced capacity credit reductions, especially for 4-h duration batteries. Coupling batteries with solar mitigates the uncertainty associated with a shorter-duration battery's availability during reliability events, primarily due to the relatively high solar capacity credit in our test system. Coupled (or hybrid) system designs with oversized solar arrays, the ability to charge the coupled battery with grid energy, and larger batteries lead to the greatest capacity credit benefits of hybridization. We do not see evidence that the hybrid capacity credit exceeds the sum of the separate battery and solar capacity credits.

Flexible operation of nuclear hybrid energy systems for load following and water desalination

Nuclear hybrid energy systems (NHES) have the potential to provide dependable and emission-free electricity to the grid while also increasing the flexibility and reliability of the electrical grid. Molten salt reactor (MSR) technology can provide consistent, carbon-free electricity while also increasing efficiency, security, and sustainability and reducing nuclear waste. This study investigates the integration of Molten Salt Reactors (MSR) and conventional Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) with desalination technologies: Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD), Multi-Stage Flash Distillation (MSFD), and Reverse Osmosis (RO). Dynamic first-principles models were developed and tested using real grid data from the New York Independent System Operator. The results demonstrate that nuclear power is capable of flexibly responding to changing grid demand while simultaneously producing clean water, particularly during periods of low electricity demand. The MSR-RO system was found to be the most efficient in electricity generation and water production, and all hybrid systems reduced CO2 emissions by 356,000 to 682,000 tons annually. Economic analysis reveals that nuclear desalination technologies are cost-competitive with conventional systems, especially when paired with RO. Finally, these findings confirm the technical feasibility and environmental benefits of nuclear hybrid systems for sustainable electricity and water production.

Hybrid electric buses fuel consumption prediction based on real-world driving data

Estimating fuel consumption by hybrid diesel buses is challenging due to its diversified operations and driving cycles. Here, long-term transit bus monitoring data were utilized to empirically compare fuel consumption of diesel and hybrid buses under various driving conditions. Artificial neural network (ANN) based high-fidelity microscopic (1 Hz) and mesoscopic (5–60 min) fuel consumption models were developed for hybrid buses. The microscopic model contained 1 Hz driving, grade, and environment variables. The mesoscopic model aggregated 1 Hz data into 5 to 60-minute traffic pattern factors and predicted average fuel consumption over its duration. The prediction results show mean absolute percentage errors of 1–2% for microscopic models and 5–8% for mesoscopic models. The data were partitioned by different driving speeds, vehicle engine demand, and road grade to investigate their impacts on prediction performance.

Soft-Shear-Aligned Vertically Oriented Lamellar Block Copolymers for Template-Free Sub-10 nm Patterning and Hybrid Nanostructures

The template-free unidirectional alignment of lamellar block copolymers (l-BCPs) for sub-10 nm high-resolution patterning and hybrid multicomponent nanostructures is important for technological applications. Here we demonstrate a modified soft-shear directed self-assembly (SDSA) approach for aligning pristine l-BCPs and l-BCPs with incorporated polymer grafted nanoparticles (PGNPs), as well as the l-BCPs conversion to aligned gold nanowires, and hybrid of metallic gold nanowire and dielectric silica nanoparticle in the form of line-dot nanostructures. The smallest patterns have a half-pitch as small as 9.8 nm. In all cases, soft-shear is achieved using a high molecular mass polymer topcoat layer, with support on a neutral bottom layer. We also show that the hybrid line-dot nanostructures have a red-shifted plasmonic response in comparison to the neat gold nanowires. These template-free aligned BCPs and nanowires have potential use in nanopatterning applications and the line-dot nanostructures should be useful in the plasmonic sensing of biomolecules and other molecular species based on the plasmonic response of the nanowires.

Redesigned Hybrid Nylons with Optical Clarity and Chemical Recyclability

Aliphatic polyamides, or nylons, are typically highly crystalline and thermally robust polymers used in high-performance applications. Nylon 6, a high-ceiling-temperature (HCT) polyamide from e-caprolactam, lacks expedient chemical recyclability, while low-ceiling temperature (LCT) nylon 4 from pyrrolidone exhibits complete chemical recyclability, but it is thermally unstable and not melt-processable. Here, we introduce a hybrid nylon, nylon 4/6, based on a bicyclic lactam composed of both HCT ..epsilon..-caprolactam and LCT pyrrolidone motifs in a hybridized offspring structure. Hybrid nylon 4/6 overcomes trade-offs in (de)polymerizability and performance properties of the parent nylons, exhibiting both excellent polymerization and facile depolymerization characteristics. This stereoregular polyamide forms nanocrystalline domains, allowing optical clarity and high thermal stability, however, without displaying a melting transition before decomposition. Of a series of statistical copolymers comprising nylon 4/6 and nylon 4, a 50/50 copolymer achieves the greatest synergy in both reactivity and polymer properties of each homopolymer, offering an amorphous nylon with favorable properties, including optical clarity, a high glass transition temperature, melt processability, and full chemical recyclability.

Nanoarchitectonic Semiconductor–Bio Hybrid Systems with Enhanced Charge Transfer for Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Nanoarchitectonics offers a systematic approach to creating an artificial framework by integrating different multiscale components such as semiconductor lattices and biological substances. However, most nanoarchitectonic abiotic-biotic hybrid systems have intrinsic limitations in imparting nonequilibrium biological features into semiconductor lattices at the nanoscale. Here, in this study, we report a new nanoarchitectonic system integrating bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets with purple membrane (PM) patches. PM is an archaeal subcellular fraction capable of unidirectionally transferring photogenerated charge carriers to its surroundings at the nanoscale independent of archaeal metabolism and retaining this dynamic functionality after isolation from living archaea. Microscopy, spectroscopy, electrochemical, and synchrotron X-ray scattering analyses verify that the nanoarchitectonic hybridization between BiOCl and PM generates a vertical heterostructure, thereby enhancing photogenerated charge-carrier dynamics and enabling the associated photocatalytic capacity. The resulting PM-BiOCl hybrid nanosheets efficiently convert dioxygen into hydrogen peroxide through a two-electron and two-proton transfer process under ambient conditions while simultaneously converting ethylene glycol into value-added chemicals. This study presents a nanoarchitectonic approach that leverages the photogenerated charge-carrier dynamics of the archaeal subcellular fractions to modulate the optoelectronic and catalytic capacity limitations of semiconductors.

Suppressing thermal transport in nonporous polymer hybrids by limiting thermally accessible vibrational modes

Achieving low thermal conductivity in nonporous polymer materials without compromising mechanical integrity remains a longstanding challenge. Conventional strategies, such as introducing porosity, are inherently limited in dense systems. Here, in this study, we demonstrate that thermal transport in polymer–organic filler hybrids is closely associated with the engineered availability of thermally accessible vibrational modes, rather than individual interfacial resistance or porosity. Using PU/organic filler hybrids as a model system, we show that incorporating rigid organic motifs shifts the vibrational density of states toward higher frequencies, where vibrational modes are weakly thermally populated at ambient conditions. This limits the number of heat-carrying channels, leading to suppressed thermal conductivity despite negligible individual interfacial resistance (∼10 −9 m 2 K W −1 ). These findings provide initial evidence that vibrational mode engineering may offer a promising molecular-level route for reducing thermal conductivity in dense polymer–organic hybrid systems.

Mean-field limit of a hybrid system for multi-lane multi-class traffic

This article aims to study coupled mean-field equation and ODEs with discrete events motivated by vehicular traffic flow. Precisely, multi-lane traffic flow in presence of human-driven and autonomous vehicles is considered, with autonomous vehicles possibly influenced by external policymakers. First, a finite-dimensional hybrid system is developed based on the continuous Bando-Follow-the-Leader dynamics coupled with discrete events due to lane-change maneuvers. Then the mean-field limit of the finite-dimensional hybrid system is rigorously derived for the dynamics of the human-driven vehicles. The microscopic lane-change maneuvers of the human-driven vehicles generate a source term for the mean-field PDE. This leads to an infinite-dimensional hybrid system described by coupled Vlasov-type PDE, ODEs, and discrete events.

Spatial and unobserved heterogeneity in consumer preferences for adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles: A Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach

The transition to low carbon vehicles known as alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) is well underway. This transition has been motivated partly by consumer demand and partly by legislation such as the Zero Emission Vehicle mandate, which requires manufacturers to sell a certain percentage of their vehicles as AFVs. While the long-term adoption of AFVs (specifically, electric and hybrids) may take several years, there is a need to understand consumer preferences for AFV adoption and the pathways of AFV adoption from a national perspective. Therefore, this study sought to provide information about consumer preferences regarding AFV ownership while considering spatial and unobserved heterogeneity in consumer preferences, which can potentially impact societal transition to low carbon fueled vehicles. The 2017 National Household Travel Survey was used to calibrate Bayesian logit and hierarchical models. Here, the findings of these models reveal that higher gasoline prices contribute toward the adoption of battery electric vehicles. The results also reveal that the perceived disadvantages of AFVs for long commutes are the key barrier in wider adoption of AFVs. Interestingly, frequent use of the internet by consumers revealed a higher likelihood for purchase of hybrid vehicles. Furthermore, West Coast residents are observed to be a large portion of the early adopters and are more likely to purchase hybrids as compared to battery electric vehicles. The knowledge generated by this study has implications for making better informed decisions about AFV adoption and developing incentives to promote wider adoption of AFVs by overcoming their perceived disadvantages.

Scoping study of lower hybrid current drive for CFETR

The paper assesses the applicability of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) for two potential operating scenarios for the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR): the “hybrid” scenario in which some of the plasma current is sustained by the Ohmic transformer, and the fully non-inductive “steady state” scenario. Here, the πScope workflow engine was used to set up a large number of ray tracing/Fokker-Planck simulations (> 10 4 ) with parametric scans in the antenna poloidal position and launched parallel refractive index (n || ) for both the hybrid and steady state scenarios. Modeling predicts efficient off-axis current drive (1.3 MA for 20 MW launched power) with a peak near ρ of 0.6-0.65 for waves launched from the high field side (HFS). Waves launched from the low field side (LFS) damp at larger radius (ρ > 0.73) with similar efficiency to HFS launch. Stability analysis of the CFETR scenarios favors current drive profiles peaked near the mid-radius, suggesting that HFS launch is preferable due to the current drive location. The effect of wave scattering from density blobs in the edge/scrape-off-layer region was assessed through rotation of the perpendicular wavenumber at the ray origin. Simulations show that this effect can be quite large both in efficiency and damping location, however by adjusting the launched n|| much of the unperturbed performance can be recovered.

Optimal hybrid power plants for electric vehicle charging demand

Transmission constraints, increasing motivations to decarbonize, and concerns over peak electric vehicle (EV) load impacts on local grids have driven electric customers to consider behind-the-meter, hybrid power plant generation and storage at the distributed-grid level for EV charging. In this study, we develop capabilities to optimize hybrid power plant component capacities for EV charging. We then demonstrate these capabilities in a case study for Boulder, Colorado, using public EV charging data as well as wind and solar resource data. Our results show system designs that balance the cost of energy with load-meeting and peak shaving performance. Within the case study, systems designed for wind, solar photovoltaic (PV), and storage resulted in lower cost of energy than those optimized for PV and storage only. This indicates that in areas where wind resource exists, hybrid power plants that include wind, PV, and battery assets can better meet EV charging loads (including peak loads that are prone to overloading local grids) than PV and battery assets alone. Future work to address limitations in this paper include extending cost modeling to include performance losses (e.g., based on operations or weather) and charging station costs to estimate levelized cost of charging, and quantifying uncertainty and error in our aggregation methods for estimating EV charging loads at the hourly timescale.

Hybrid Entanglement Distribution between Remote Microwave Quantum Computers Empowered by Machine Learning

Superconducting microwave circuits with Josephson junctions, the major platform for quantum computing, can only reach the full capability when connected. This requires an efficient protocol to distribute microwave entanglement. While quantum computers typically use discrete-variable (DV) methods for information encoding, the entire continuous-variable (CV) degree of freedom in electromagnetic fields must be utilized to achieve the highest entanglement distribution rate. Here, we propose a hybrid protocol to resolve the incompatibility between DV microwave quantum computers and CV quantum communications. CV microwave entanglement is distributed using optical swapping of optical-microwave entanglement pairs. To interface with DV microwave quantum computers, we further design a hybrid circuit to simultaneously convert and distill high-quality DV entanglement from noisy CV entanglement. The hybrid circuit is trained with machine-learning algorithms, ensuring high entanglement fidelity and generation rate. In conclusion, our work not only provides a practical method to realize efficient quantum links for superconducting microwave quantum computers, but also opens avenues to bridge the gap between DV and CV quantum systems.

Self-consistent quasiparticle G W and hybrid functional calculations for Al/InAs/Al heterojunctions: Band offset and spin-orbit coupling effects

The electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces plays a key role in the properties of quantum devices. Here, we study the electronic structure of realistic Al/InAs/Al heterojunctions using a combination of density functional theory with hybrid functionals and state-of-the-art quasiparticle G W (QSGW) calculations. We find a good agreement between QSGW calculations and hybrid functional calculations, which themselves compare favorably well with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments. Our paper confirms the need for well-controlled quality of the interfaces to obtain the needed properties of InAs/Al heterojunctions. A detailed analysis of the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the spin splitting of the electronic states shows a linear scaling in k space, related to the two-dimensional nature of some interface states. The good agreement by QSGW and hybrid functional calculations opens the door towards trustable use of an effective approximation to QSGW for studying very large heterojunctions. Accurate point defect energy levels from non-empirical screened range-separated hybrid functionals: The case of native vacancies in ZnO

We use density functional theory (DFT) with non-empirically tuned screened range-separated hybrid (SRSH) functionals to calculate the electronic properties of native zinc and oxygen vacancy point defects in ZnO, and we predict their defect levels for thermal and optical transitions in excellent agreement with available experiments and prior calculations that use empirical hybrid functionals. Furthermore, the ability of this non-empirical first-principles framework to accurately predict quantities of relevance to both bulk- and defect-level spectroscopy enables high-accuracy DFT calculations with non-empirical hybrid functionals for defect physics, at a reduced computational cost.

Hybrid Resources: Challenges, Implications, Opportunities, and Innovation

The electric power system has historically been designed to provide reliable energy to loads by using a relatively small number of well-understood generators. The distinction between load, generation, and transmission resources has been quite clear. Most of the responsibility for planning and operating a system - building a highly reliable network from less reliable parts - has been with the system manager, whether that be a utility, a regional market operator, or some similar entity. Given this historical context, many experts were initially perplexed by the rapidly growing popularity of hybrid resources, which combine multiple technologies into a single entity. Rather than depending on a system operator to provide instructions to individual technologies, hybrid resources intentionally take on more operational responsibility by optimizing and scheduling their combined functions. Interconnection queues in many regions reveal a large and growing interest in hybrids, suggesting that project developers and investors see them as providing advantages.

Conceptual Design of 20 T Hybrid Accelerator Dipole Magnets

Hybrid magnets are currently under consideration as an economically viable option towards 20 T dipole magnets for next generation of particle accelerators. In these magnets, High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) materials are used in the high field part of the coil with so-called insert coils, and Low Temperature Superconductors (LTS) like Nb 3 Sn and Nb-Ti superconductors are used in the lower field region with so-called outsert coils. The attractiveness of the hybrid option lays on the fact that, on the one hand, the 20 T field level is beyond the Nb 3 Sn practical limits of 15-16 T for accelerator magnets and can be achieved only via HTS materials; on the other hand, the high cost of HTS superconductors compared to LTS superconductors makes it advantageous exploring a hybrid approach, where the HTS portion of the coil is minimized. Here we present in this paper an overview of different design options aimed at generating 20 T field in a 50 mm clear aperture. The coil layouts investigated include the Cos-theta design (CT), with its variations to reduce the conductor peak stress, namely the Canted Cos-theta design (CCT) and the Stress Management Cos-theta design (SMCT), and, in addition, the Block-type design (BL) including a form of stress management and the Common-Coil design (CC). Results from a magnetic and mechanical analysis are discussed, with particular focus on the comparison between the different options regarding quantity of superconducting material, field quality, conductor peak stress, and quench protection.

Hybrid Dynamic Modeling of Smart Inverter

This letter proposes a novel hybrid method for assessing grid-connected three-phase converter interfaced resources (CIR) dynamics with the IEEE standard 1547-2018 grid support functions (GSFs), which blends physics and data-driven techniques. First, the letter derives an analytical model of a CIR to represent the internal physics and data-driven model (DDM) using a system identification algorithm to represent the rest of the dynamics, including the GSF. The derived hybrid model combines the analytical model of CIR and DDM, which balances accuracy and flexibility and is compared with the detailed switched model. Furthermore, the efficacy of the proposed approach to represent the advanced CIR dynamics is substantiated by power hardware-in-the-loop experiment data where real measurements from a commercial CIR are used to cross-validate the proposed approach. Furthermore, the results indicate that despite simple, the hybrid model accurately reproduces the dynamics of the detailed CIR model with an acceptable accuracy.

The Case for Strong Scaling in Deep Learning: Training Large 3D CNNs with Hybrid Parallelism

Here, we present scalable hybrid-parallel algorithms for training large-scale 3D convolutional neural networks. Deep learning-based emerging scientific workflows often require model training with large, high-dimensional samples, which can make training much more costly and even infeasible due to excessive memory usage. We solve these challenges by extensively applying hybrid parallelism throughout the end-to-end training pipeline, including both computations and I/O. Our hybrid-parallel algorithm extends the standard data parallelism with spatial parallelism, which partitions a single sample in the spatial domain, realizing strong scaling beyond the mini-batch dimension with a larger aggregated memory capacity. We evaluate our proposed training algorithms with two challenging 3D CNNs, CosmoFlow and 3D U-Net. Our comprehensive performance studies show that good weak and strong scaling can be achieved for both networks using up to 2K GPUs. More importantly, we enable training of CosmoFlow with much larger samples than previously possible, realizing an order-of-magnitude improvement in prediction accuracy.
