Summary Report for the Analysis of the Sludge Batch 7b (Macrobatch 9) DWPF Pour Stream Glass Sample for Canister S04023

In order to comply with the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Waste Form Compliance Plan for Sludge Batch 7b, Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) personnel characterized the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) pour stream (PS) glass sample collected while filling canister S04023. This report summarizes the results of the compositional analysis for reportable oxides and radionuclides and the normalized Product Consistency Test (PCT) results. The PCT responses indicate that the DWPF produced glass that is significantly more durable than the Environmental Assessment glass. Results and further details are documented in SRNL-STI-2013-00462, Revision 1 “Analysis of the DWPF Sludge Batch 7b (Macrobatch 9) Pour Stream Glass Sample.”

Product Consistency Test Results for the LAW ALG Glasses

This report provides the results of the Product Consistency Test leachates from the Low-Activity Waste Algorithm glasses, a series of simulated nuclear waste glasses designed and fabricated at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The series included quenched and canister centerline cooled versions of the glasses. These data will be used in the development, validation, and implementation of enhanced property/composition models for waste glass vitrification at Hanford.

Nepheline Crystallization Studies and the Structural Integrity of the Residual (SIR) - FY 2022 Study Glasses

In FY22 a set of 367 HLW glasses with compositions representative of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) processing region were aggregated and analyzed with the Structural Integrity of the Residual (SIR) model developed by the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). An additional 12 glasses targeting 27 – 37 wt % alumina (in glass) and at waste loadings up to ~70 wt % were fabricated and added to the database. Collectively, this data set was analyzed with regression statistics and partitioning functions to reveal correlations between boron release and the chemical composition. FY22 results indicate that the SIR theoretical alkali-silicate precipitation term, Al 2 O 3 and B 2 O 3 concentration, and SIR computed non-bridging oxygen are significant predictors of chemical durability. A statistical model using the SIR parameters was shown to have greater overall accuracy than the nepheline discriminator model while maintaining false predictions of pour durability below 1%. In FY23, we will continue this work to focus on refining the SIR with glass compositions that challenge the SIR correlation terms, namely the theoretical crystalline precipitation and non-bridging oxygen terms.

Analysis of DWPF Sludge Batch 6 (Macrobatch 7) Pour Stream Glass Samples

The Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) began processing Sludge Batch 6 (SB6), also referred to as Macrobatch 7 (MB7), in June 2010. SB6 is a blend of the heel of Tank 40 from Sludge Batch 5 (SB5), H-Canyon Np transfers and SB6 that was transferred to Tank 40 from Tank 51. SB6 was processed using Frit 418. During processing of each sludge batch, the DWPF is required to take at least one glass sample to meet the objectives of the Glass Product Control Program and to complete the necessary Production Records so that the final glass product may be disposed of at a Federal Repository. Four pour stream glass samples and two Melter Feed Tank (MFT) slurry samples were collected while processing SB6. The samples were transferred to the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) where they were analyzed.

Time-Temperature-Transformation (TTT) Diagram for a Sludge Batch 9 Glass Composition Based on Coupled-Operation with the Salt Waste Processing Facility

The amorphous structure of a glass waste form has the potential to rearrange into crystalline phases at temperatures between the liquidus temperature and the glass transition temperature (Tg). Certain phases that can form will be detrimental to the durability of the glass and it is important to know the conditions that promote devitrification. The canister-centerline-cooling (CCC) profile is used to replicate the area within the center of the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) canister with the slowest cooling during the initial cool down after pouring, which has the greatest potential for crystallization. Other time-temperature conditions that cause significant changes in either phase structure or phase composition are identified by a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) study. The phase stability of a waste form must be determined as a part of the Waste Acceptance Product Specifications (WAPS) if it is to eventually be stored in a geologic repository. This requires the creation of a TTT diagram and analysis of the Tg, as defined by the Department of Energy (DOE). The previous TTT study for a DWPF glass waste form was completed in 2010 prior to coupled operation with the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF). SWPF transfers two high activity waste streams to DWPF for vitrification: a cesium-containing strip effluent and a stream containing monosodium titanate/sludge solids. These SWPF streams were first transferred to DWPF for vitrification during Sludge Batch 9 (SB9) in 2021. The impact of these SWPF streams on crystallization behavior was not determined in previous studies and the need for data to satisfy WAPS Specification 1.4 for SB9 was identified.

The Origin of Anomalous Density Behavior of Silica Glass

The anomalous density–temperature relationship of vitreous silica with low hydroxyl content is explained by the formation of medium-range ordering structure in the glass transition process. The ordered medium-range structure has the shape of a “nanoflake” and consists of two layers of SiO 4 tetrahedra, bonded by O atoms located in the middle of the structure. The nanoflakes interact with their surrounding structures through both covalent chemical bonds and van der Waals bonds. In the formation of the van der Waals bonds, the orientation of SiO 4 tetrahedra can change, which results in an increase in distance between the nanoflakes and their surrounding structures. Thus, there is a slight volume enlargement associated with the formation of nanoflakes. Since the nanoflakes’ formation starts at a temperature near 1480 °C, and the population of the nanoflakes grows continuously as temperature decreases until about 950 °C, the bulk volume of silica glass increases in the temperature range from about 1480 °C to 950 °C. Therefore, the density anomaly of silica glass can be explained as a byproduct of forming of medium-range ordering structure in the silica glass transition.

Progress in Understanding the Origins of Excellent Corrosion Resistance in Metallic Alloys: From Binary Polycrystalline Alloys to Metallic Glasses and High Entropy Alloys

Some of the factors responsible for good corrosion resistance of select polycrystalline and emerging alloys in chloride solutions are discussed with a goal of providing some perspectives on the current status and future directions. Traditional metallic glass alloys, single phase high entropy alloys (HEAs), early metallic glasses, and high entropy metallic glasses are all emerging corrosion-resistant alloys (CRAs) that utilize traditional strategies for improved corrosion resistance as well as take advantage of some other novel beneficial attributes. These materials enjoy many degrees of freedom as far as choice of both composition and structure, providing great flexibility in the pursuit of superior corrosion resistance. The new materials depart from classical solvent-solute type polycrystalline binary or ternary alloys. Thus, such emerging materials provide significant opportunities to achieve even greater improvements in corrosion resistance in harsh environments. Several examples of the unique corrosion properties of selected materials in the context of modern theories of corrosion are discussed herein. Discussion is restricted to solid-solution binary or ternary polycrystalline alloys, several metallic glass alloys, and single phase HEAs. A common feature of many CRAs is that composition and microstructure often affect both passivity and resistance to localized corrosion that can be divided into initiation, stabilization, and propagation stages. Enormous complexities in protective oxide structures and chemistries and the large number of combinatorial possibilities in newer materials such as HEAs preclude trial-and-error approaches and perhaps even combinatorial experimental design. Computational materials methodologies will be required in the search for new corrosion-resistant alloys in these material classes. The search must consider the best scientific insights available regarding how major and minor alloy additions, as well as various microstructural attributes, contribute to corrosion mitigation. Additional scientific insights, as they emerge, will enable choices beyond the reliance on high concentrations of alloying elements that are known to affect passivity breakdown and pit stabilization. A challenge is to connect the “basic attributes” of an alloy with its properties. The strength of this connection will likely require new scientific principles enabling deep multiphysics insights in order to link feature(s) such as composition and metallurgical phases to the desired corrosion properties. Application of data informatics will likely also play a role given the plethora of variables that are important in corrosion and the difficulty in assessing all relationships. Here, the opportunity exists to accelerate the design of emerging materials for high corrosion resistance.

Computationally-Aided Design of a Small-Scale Radioactive Waste Glass Melter

To provide mission support to the Hanford Waste Immobilization and Treatment Plant for the vitrification of legacy nuclear tank waste, a reduced-scale vitrification pilot system is being designed to process simulated and actual radioactive tank wastes. The tank waste will be separated into high-level waste (HLW) and low-activity waste (LAW) fractions, where the majority by mass (~90%) is LAW and by activity (>95%) is HLW. The first tank waste to be processed at the WTP will be LAW. Since Hanford tank waste and the resultant melter feed compositions are known to vary widely, pilot-scale operations are essential to identify potential problems, provide needed data, confirm assumptions, and determine impacts to full-scale melters and off-gas systems from these different feeds. In addition, the reduced-scale melter system must be capable of quickly providing results to operations without the typically high costs of radioactive operations and provide an engineering platform in close proximity to local operations staff. The objective is to produce similar process conditions to those encountered in the full-scale LAW melters and minimize the volume of radioactive waste necessary for the evaluations. To this end, melter design features are being explored to increase production without significantly increasing surface area, melter glass volumes or compromising data quality. In support of these objectives, a set of computational fluid dynamic models have been developed to provide insight into the flow patterns within these small melters and evaluate design features to increase production without significantly increasing glass inventory. Computed velocities were evaluated at the interface between the cold cap and the molten glass pool and within the bulk glass pool. A method was developed to correlate results to an estimated melt rate and down-select design features that produce the highest gains.

Liquid fragility maximum in lithium borate glass‐forming melts related to the local structure

Abstract The structure of liquid lithium pyroborate, Li 4 B 2 O 5 ( J = Li/B = 2), has been measured over a wide temperature range by high‐energy X‐ray diffraction, and compared to that of its glass and borate liquids of other compositions. The results indicate a gradual increase in tetrahedral boron fraction from 3(1)% to 6(1)% during cooling from T = 1271(15) to 721(8) K, consistent with the larger N 4 = 10(1)% found for the glass, and literature 11 B nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. van't Hoff analysis based on a simple boron isomerization reaction BØ 3 O 2 – ⇌ BØO 2 2– yields Δ H = 13(1) kJ mol –1 and Δ S = 40(1) J mol –1 K –1 for the boron coordination change from 4 to 3, which are, respectively, smaller and larger than found for singly charged isomers for J ≤ 1. With these, we extend our model for N 4 ( J , T ), nonbridging oxygen fraction f nbr ( J , T ), configurational heat capacity , and entropy S conf ( J , T ) contributions up to J = 3. A maximum is revealed in at J = 1, and shown semi‐quantitatively to lead to a corresponding maximum in fragility contribution, akin to that observed in the total fragilities by temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Lithium is bound to 4.6(2) oxygen in the pyroborate liquid, with 2.7(1) bonds centered around 1.946(8) Å and 1.9(1) around 2.42(1) Å. In the glass, n LiO = 5.4(4), the increase being due to an increase in the number of short Li–O bonds.

Tomographic Volumetric Additive Manufacturing of Silica Glass with In Situ Error Calculation and Projection Tiling

The optical, thermal, and chemical properties of glass make it an ideal material for use in a wide range of applications, from optics and chemistry reactionware to consumer products. Tomographic volumetric additive manufacturing (tVAM) creates 3D objects by selectively gelling material within a rotating vial of photo-sensitive material by exposure to a series of tomographically-determined images. Here, in this study, tVAM is investigated for fabrication of complex, centimeter-scale, 3D silica glass parts. By optimizing the post-processing procedure, fully-dense glass parts with up to 2 cm 2 cross sectional area are achieved. The changes in optical properties during printing are leveraged for in situ metrology during printing, and the non-Newtonian nature of the glass-filled photoresin system to facilitate larger fabrication volumes via tiled projections. Printed structures are finally demonstrated for applications as MEMS components, optics, fluidics, and consumer products.

Transient nature of fast relaxation in metallic glass

Metallic glasses exhibit fast mechanical relaxations at temperatures well below the glass transition, one of which shows little variation with temperature known as nearly constant loss (NCL). Despite the important implications of this phenomenon to deformation, the origin of the relaxation is unclear. Through molecular dynamics simulations of a model metallic glass, Cu 64.5 Zr 35.5 , we implement molecular dynamics dynamical mechanical spectroscopy (MD-DMS) with system stress decomposed into atomic-level stresses to identify the group of atoms responsible for NCL. This work demonstrates that NCL relaxation is due to transient groups of atoms that revert to the typical atomic-level viscoelastic behavior over picosecond timescales. They are homogenously distributed throughout the glass and have no outstanding features, rather than having defect-like local structure as previously reported.

Enhanced ductility in in-layer glass-carbon fiber/epoxy hybrid composites produced via tailored fiber placement

Experimental mechanical property results of composite materials with hybrid reinforcements (commingled glass and carbon fibers) are detailed and compared with single-fiber composite properties. In-layer hybrid materials, with carbon and glass fiber tows laid side-by-side, were produced via tailored fiber placement (TFP) technology. Detailed experiments showed a phenomenon of “enhanced ductility” of carbon fiber in the hybrid composites of 12–24% relative to an all-carbon fiber composite and multiple stress–strain peaks were observed. Here, this enhanced ductility was hypothesized to be due to the glass fibers mitigating the shock waves arising from the initial failures of carbon fibers, and preventing the premature failure of the remaining carbon fibers. A novel way to engineer the stress–strain behavior of a hybrid composite to achieve a metal-like ductile response (plateau of stress–strain behavior, often termed “elastic–plastic deformation”) was demonstrated by carefully selecting the type and composition of carbon and glass fiber materials.

Temporal and spatial separations between spin glass and short-range order

Broken-symmetry-induced order parameters account for many phenomena in physics. For spin glasses, this framework dictates the theoretical construction, whereas experiments have only established dynamical behaviors but not the physical entity. Experimental techniques have limitations when the spin glass is probed as an isolated state. Here, we create an evolution from a long-range order using well-controlled non-magnetic substitution on a sublattice. Neutron magnetic diffuse scattering of pico-second timescale reveals that the dynamics of short- and long-range order formation are not affected by disorder, but their spatial ranges are. Across all specimens, the inflection point of spin correlation length’s temperature dependence fully matches with the peak in heat capacity, while spin glass can freeze at millisecond timescale either above or below this characteristic temperature of spin-order formation. Our results identify the spin glass as single, uncorrelated spins at domain walls between spin clusters, and an uncorrelated coexistence of the two.

Liquid and Glass Phases of an Alkylguanidinium Sulfonate Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework

Glassy phases of framework materials feature unique and tunable properties that are advantageous for gas separation membranes, solid electrolytes, and phase-change memory applications. However, the structural and chemical diversity of porous frameworks that can be liquified and quenched into a glass has been limited by thermal decomposition at-or below-the high temperatures required to induce a melting transition. Utilizing a desymmetrization strategy, in this work we report a new guanidinium organosulfonate hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) that melts and vitrifies below 100 °C. In this low-temperature regime, non-covalent interactions between guest molecules and the porous framework become a dominant contributor to the overall stability of the structure, resulting in unusual phase behavior such as guest dependent melting, glass, and recrystallization transitions. Through molecular dynamics simulations and pair distribution function analysis, we show that the local structure of the amorphous liquid and glass phase resembles that of the parent crystalline framework. Access to molten phases of framework materials at moderate temperatures should permit the use of more thermally sensitive functional groups and enhance the structural control and tunability that can be realized in network-forming glasses.

Cluster-Spin-Glass Magnetic Behavior and Morphology in the Coordination Polymer Alloys Fe y Co 1– y BTT

We report the synthesis of a series of pseudo-1D coordination polymer (CP) materials with the formula Fe y Co 1–y BTT (BTT = 1,3,5-benzenetrithiolate). These materials were structurally characterized by PXRD Rietveld, EXAFS, and PDF analyses, revealing that the CP superstructure enables a continuous and isomorphous alloy between the two homometallic compounds. Lower Fe loadings exhibit emergent spin glass magnetic behavior, such as memory effects and composition-dependent spin glass response time constants ranging from 6.9 × 10 –9 s to 1.8 × 10 –6 s. These data are consistent with the formation of spin clusters within the lattice. The magnetic behavior in these materials was modeled via replica exchange Monte Carlo simulation, which provides a good match for the experimentally measured spin glassing and magnetic phase transitions. Furthermore, these findings underscore how the rigid superstructure of CP and MOF scaffolds can enable the systematic tuning of physical properties, such as the spin glass behavior described here.

Electronic Configurational Transformation of Network Modifiers in Aluminate Glass above Megabar Pressures

Electronic responses of glasses under extreme pressures differ from those of crystalline analogs. Their distinct electronic environments are found in network formers with well-defined, covalent-bonded coordination environments (e.g., [4] Si and [4] Al) and in network modifiers with more disordered, ionic-bonded configurations (e.g., [5,6,7] Ca). Deciphering the evolution of the bonding environment of network modifier cations upon compression provides atomic insights into the pressure-driven hardening and transport properties of glasses. Despite the importance, in contrast to extensive efforts to uncover how network formers behave under pressure, considerable structural disorder around network modifiers makes it challenging to probe their electronic bonding environments under compression. Our understanding of the evolution of network modifiers above megabars is currently absent. Here, we report a discovery of highly densified electronic configurations of network modifier Ca in aluminate glass under extreme compression via the first inelastic X-ray scattering at the Ca L-edge up to 140 GPa. As evidenced by the prominent pressure-driven increases in electronic dispersion and delocalization, densified calcium environments are characterized by a decreased average Ca–O distance, the formation of highly coordinated calcium, a broader distribution of topological variables, and a greater distortion of Ca polyhedra above megabars. The spectral features for the Ca environments reveal significant electronic and bonding modifications, including pressure-driven increases in the ligand field interaction, the covalence characteristic of the Ca–O bond, and the electron–hole Coulomb interaction. These densification paths identify the electronic adaptation of network modifiers above megabars, shedding light on the origins of enhanced electron transport and the electron-storing capacity of glasses under pressure.
