A powerful enhancement to the DMAP alter capability

A powerful enhancement to the DMAP alter capability was developed and is available on all RPK-supported versions of COSMIC/NASTRAN. This enhancement involves the addition of two alter control cards, called INSERT and DELETE, to the Executive Control Deck. These cards allow for DMAP alters to be made by referencing DMAP statements by their module names rather than by their statement numbers in the rigid format DMAP sequence. This allows for increased user convenience and flexibility and makes alters more meaningful to the user. In addition, DMAP alter packages employing the alter control cards will be much less susceptible to future changes in rigid format DMAPs than alter packages employing the standard ALTER control cards. The usage of the cards is illustrated by examples.

Improved defect analysis of Gallium Arsenide solar cells using image enhancement

A new technique has been developed to capture, digitize, and enhance the image of light emission from a forward biased direct bandgap solar cell. Since the forward biased light emission from a direct bandgap solar cell has been shown to display both qualitative and quantitative information about the solar cell's performance and its defects, signal processing techniques can be applied to the light emission images to identify and analyze shunt diodes. Shunt diodes are of particular importance because they have been found to be the type of defect which is likely to cause failure in a GaAs solar cell. The presence of a shunt diode can be detected from the light emission by using a photodetector to measure the quantity of light emitted at various current densities. However, to analyze how the shunt diodes affect the quality of the solar cell the pattern of the light emission must be studied. With the use of image enhancement routines, the light emission can be studied at low light emission levels where shunt diode effects are dominant.

Flow boiling with enhancement devices for cold plate coolant channel design

The effects of enhancement devices on flow boiling heat transfer in circular coolant channels, which are heated over a fraction of their perimeters, are studied. The variations were examined in both the mean and local (axial, and circumferential) heat transfer coefficients for a circular coolant channel with either smooth walls or with both a twisted tape and spiral finned walls. Improvements were initiated in the present data reduction analysis. These efforts should lead to the development of heat transfer correlations which include effects of single side heat flux and enhancement device configuration. It is hoped that a stage will be set for the study of heat transfer and pressure drop in single sided heated systems under zero gravity conditions.

Shock-wave-induced mixing enhancement in scramjet combustors

An experimental study of the interaction between a weak shock wave and a supersonic shear layer was carried out to determine the possibility of shock-induced mixing enhancement. A supersonic (Mach 2.5) stream of nitrogen was mixed with a sonic helium jet downstream of a rearward-facing step to simulate the mixing region in the vicinity of a SCRAMJET flameholder. A small wedge was used to generate an oblique shock wave that impinges on the mixing layer. Schlieren flow visualization and Rayleigh scattering concentration measurements were carried out. The results indicate that significant spreading of the shear layer may occur downstream of the shock/shear layer interaction region. Further study is required to determine the mechanism of the observed spreading and the extent of the increase in mixing efficiency. Since there are shock-induced losses, an optimum mixing enhancement configuration will have to be determined before the method can be validated and successfully implemented in a SCRAMJET combustor.

Access of energetic particles to storm time ring current through enhanced radial 'diffusion'

It is proposed that the transport of particles with energy of at least approximately 40 keV into the geomagnetic storm time ring current can result from enhanced stochastic radial transport driven by fluctuating electric fields during a storm's main phase. The effects of such electric fields are estimated by applying radial diffusion theory, assuming a preexisting trapped-particle population as the initial condition. The feasibility of explaining observed flux increases of particles of at least approximately 40 keV at no more than approximately 4 earth radii by enhanced radial 'diffusion' is then demonstrated. It is estimated that the at least approximately 40-keV portion of the storm time ring current at approximately 3 earth radii consists of about 50 percent preexisting and about 50 percent new particles. The formation of the storm time ring current is found to be perhaps explainable via a combination of direct radial transport at energies no greater than approximately 40 keV and 'diffusive' radial transport at higher energies.

Space Shuttle Orbiter main propulsion system flight safety enhancement

The Space Shuttle main propulsion system, like other major elements of the vehicle, has been part of an ongoing program to enhance the flight safety of the Space Transportation System. This activity, inherent in the basic program since its inception, has continued as part of a renewed review of failure modes and effects pertaining to flight-critical functions. Selected components were further evaluated, their potential for impacting flight safety was defined, and then the necessity for changing their design and/or operational practices was determined. Major examples of such components are the 17-inch disconnect and gaseous oxygen flow control valve. This paper summarizes that activity and provides examples of critical processes and components that have been or are being modified to enhance flight safety.

Mixing enhancement in a supersonic combustor

Research has been conducted for a number of years at the NASA Langley Research Center to develop a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) capable of propelling a vehicle at hypersonic speeds in the atmosphere or beyond. Recently, that research has been directed toward the optimization of the scramjet combustor, and in particular the efficiency of fuel-air mixing and reaction in the engine. This paper describes a numerical study of fuel-air mixing and reaction in a supersonic combustor, and discusses the analysis of a technique that was used to enhance the mixing processes and overall combustion efficiency in the flow. Based on the results of that study, conclusions are drawn regarding the applicability of the technique to enhance mixing in a scramjet combustor.

Enhanced modeling features within TREETOPS

The original motivation for TREETOPS was to build a generic multi-body simulation and remove the burden of writing multi-body equations from the engineers. The motivation of the enhancement was twofold: (1) to extend the menu of built-in features (sensors, actuators, constraints, etc.) that did not require user code; and (2) to extend the control system design capabilities by linking with other government funded software (NASTRAN and MATLAB). These enhancements also serve to bridge the gap between structures and control groups. It is common on large space programs for the structures groups to build hi-fidelity models of the structure using NASTRAN and for the controls group to build lower order models because they lack the tools to incorporate the former into their analysis. Now the controls engineers can accept the hi-fidelity NASTRAN models into TREETOPS, add sensors and actuators, perform model reduction and couple the result directly into MATLAB to perform their design. The controller can then be imported directly into TREETOPS for non-linear, time-history simulation.

Rocket combustion chamber life-enhancing design concepts

NASA continues to pursue technologies which can lead to an increase in life and reduce the costs of fabrication of the Space Shuttle Main Engine. The joint NASA/Air Force Advanced Launch System Program has set its prime objectives to be high reliability and low cost for their new advanced booster engine. In order to meet these objectives, NASA will utilize the results of several ongoing programs to provide the required technologies. An overview is presented of those programs which address life enhancing design concepts for the combustion chamber. Seven different design concepts, which reduce the thermal strain and/or increase the material strength of the combustion chamber liner wall are discussed. Subscale rocket test results are presented, where available, for life enhancing design concepts. Two techniques for reducing chamber fabrication costs are discussed, as well as issues relating to hydrocarbon fuels/combustion chamber liner materials compatibility.

Oxygen stabilization induced enhancement in J(sub c) and T(sub c) of superconducting oxides

In an attempt to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the high temperature superconducting oxides, high T(sub c) composites were prepared composed of the 123 compounds and AgO. The presence of extra oxygen due to the decomposition of AgO at high temperature is found to stabilize the superconducting 123 phase. Ag is found to serve as clean flux for grain growth and precipitates as pinning center. Consequently, almost two orders of magnitude enhancement in critical current densities were also observed in these composites. In addition, these composites also show much improvement in workability and shape formation. On the other hand, proper oxygen treatment of Y5Ba6Cu11Oy was found to possibly stabilize superconducting phase with T(sub c) near 250 K. I-V, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements indicate the existence of this ultra high T(sub c) phase in this compound. Detailed structure, microstructure, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of the superconducting composites and the ultra high T(sub c) compound are presented and discussed.

Observations of the magnetic fluctuation enhancement in the earth's foreshock region

Upstream waves have been postulated to be a major source of energy for the dayside magnetic pulsations within the magnetosphere. Thus, it is of interest to determine over what frequency range in the ion foreshock the power of fluctuations in the solar wind is enhanced. The magnetic field data from pairs of spacecraft, when they stay on either side of the ion foreshock boundary, were examined. It was found that the power of magnetic fluctuations is enhanced only at periods less than about two minutes, not at longer periods. Thus the upstream waves may contribute to Pc 3 and Pc 4 pulsations in the dayside magnetosphere, but they cannot be directly responsible for the longer-period waves.

Enhanced heat transfer rocket combustor technology component hot-fire test results

The evaluation of a method for enhancing combustor hot-gas wall heat extraction by using hot-fire tests of a rocket engine combustor calorimeter with hot-gas wall ribs is presented. The capability for enhanced heat extraction is required to increase available turbine drive energy for high chamber pressure operation, and therefore higher overall expander cycle engine performance. Determination of the rib effectiveness for incorporation into the design of a high-performance combustor for an advanced expander cycle combustor intended for use in an orbital transfer vehicle or advanced space engine, was the objective of these tests.

Caloris Basin - An enhanced source for potassium in Mercury's atmosphere

Enhanced abundances of neutral K in the atmosphere of Mercury have been found above the longitude range containing Caloris Basin. Results of a large data set including six elongations of the planet between June 1986 and January 1988 show typical K column abundances of about 5.4 x 10 to the 8th K atmos/sq cm. During the observing period in October 1987, when Caloris Basin was in view, the typical K column was about 2.7 x 10 to the 9th K atoms/sq cm. Another large value was seen over the Caloris antipode in January 1988. This enhancement is consistent with an increased source of K from the well-fractured crust and regolith associated with this large impact basin. The phenomenon is localized because at most solar angles, thermal alkali atoms cannot move more than a few hundred kilometers from their source before being lost to ionization by solar ultraviolet radiation.

Millimeter-wave Sensor Image Enhancement

Images of an airborne scanning radiometer operating at a frequency of 98 GHz were analyzed. The mm wave images were obtained using the JPL mm wave imaging sensor. The goal was to enhance the information content of these images and make their interpretation easier for human analysis. A visual interpretative approach was used for information extraction from the images. This included application of nonlinear transform techniques for noise reduction and for color, contrast, and edge enhancement. Results of the techniques on selected mm wave images are shown.

Ultrasonic correlator versus signal averager as a signal to noise enhancement instrument

Ultrasonic inspection of thick and attenuating materials is hampered by the reduce amplitudes of the propagated waves to a degree that the noise is too high to enable meaningful interpretation of the data. In order to overcome the low signal to noise ratio (S/N), a correlation technique has been developed. In this method, a continuous pseudo-random pattern generated digitally is transmitted and detected by piezoelectric transducers. A correlation is performed in the instrument between the received signal and a variable delayed image of the transmitted one. The result is shown to be proportional to the impulse response of the investigated material, analogous to a signal received from a pulsed system, with an improved S/N ratio. The degree of S/N enhancement depends on the sweep rate. The correlator is described, and it is compared to the method of enhancing S/N ratio by averaging the signals. The similarities and differences between the two are highlighted and the potential advantage of the correlator system is explained.

A theoretical model for the temporal evolution of HF-enhanced plasma lines

The HF-enhanced plasma lines (HFPLs) observed in the Arecibo heating experiments refer to the radar returns at frequencies near the sum and difference of the radar frequency and the HF-heatear frequency. Those enhanced spectral lines are caused by backscatter of radar signals from parametrically excited plasma waves having a wavenumber of 18 n. A nonlinear theory was developed to describe the temporal evolution of those specified plasma waves and their originating altitude interval of HFPLs observed at Arecibo, Puerto Rico are explained. The theoretical resultsagree well with the observation (Djuth and Sulzer, 1989).
