Atomistic Insights into Lithium–Glyme Solvate Ionic Liquids: Effects of Chain Length and Anion Coordination

For this study, mixtures of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) in diglyme (G2), triglyme (G3) and tetraglyme (G4) at solvate ionic liquid (SIL) concentrations were investigated using classical molecular dynamics (cMD) simulations with a physically motivated force-field specifically developed for modeling these systems. The structural and dynamical properties of the mixtures were computed and analyzed. Lithium solvation shells, radial distribution functions, and X-ray structure factors were studied across the different SIL systems. Translational diffusion and rotational relaxation times were also evaluated, exhibiting similar trends with increasing glyme chain length. The results are consistent with experimental data and in good agreement with previous computational studies on G3 and G4. These findings validate the accuracy of the force field in modeling glyme systems and its use for describing the [Li(G2) 4/3 ][TFSI] mixture. Additionally, the thermal and electrochemical stability of these electrolytes were systematically examined. The thermal stability appears to be governed by cooperative interactions among glyme molecules, while the electrochemical stability is primarily influenced by Li + -anion interactions, which vary significantly with glyme chain length. Overall, the study sheds light on the crucial role of the anion in these glyme-based SILs and offers valuable insights into Li + -glyme systems at SIL concentrations, highlighting their promise as potential Li-ion battery electrolytes.

Inverse Design of Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity Materials via Materials Database Screening of Lone Pair Cation Coordination Environment

The presence of lone pair (LP) electrons is strongly associated with the disruption of lattice heat transport, which is a critical component of strategies to achieve efficient thermoelectric energy conversion. By exploiting an empirical relationship between lattice thermal conductivity, κ L , and the bond angles of pnictogen group LP cation coordination environments, we develop an inverse design strategy based on a materials database screening to identify chalcogenide materials with ultralow κ L for thermoelectrics. Screening the ~635 000 real and hypothetical inorganic crystals of the Open Quantum Materials Database based on the constituent elements, nominal electron counting, LP cation coordination environment, and synthesizability, we identify 189 compounds expected to exhibit ultralow κ L . As a validation, we explicitly compute the lattice dynamical properties of two of the compounds (Cu 2 AgBiPbS 4 and MnTl 2 As 2 S 5 ) using first-principles calculations and successfully find both achieve ultralow κ L values at room temperature of ~0.3-0.4 W/(m·K) corresponding to the amorphous limit. Furthermore, our data-driven approach provides promising candidates for thermoelectric materials and opens new avenues for the design of phononic properties of materials.

The Polarity of Co-solvents Regulates the Charge Storage Mechanisms in Supercapacitors with Concentrated Electrolytes

Developing better energy storage devices depends on comprehending the underlying mechanisms involved in charge storage. With the continuous conception of new electrolytes, this task becomes progressively more urgent and complex. An example is the utilization of co-solvated concentrated solutions. While these show promising electrochemical responses, their dynamic properties (especially under confinement) and their relationships with performance are not fully understood. Here, we combined modified step potential electrochemical spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering to investigate systems composed of activated mesoporous carbon (AMC) and concentrated solutions of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in acetonitrile co-solvated with either toluene or acetone. Further, we report that acetone does not impair surface-controlled mechanisms, contrary to the case with toluene, which competes with charged species to populate the AMC’s pores without contributing to charge storage. In turn, toluene promotes a greater overall capacitance owing to Faradaic processes, which may be related to changes in the solvation structures under confinement.

Quantification of Mono- and Multivalent Counterion-Mediated Bridging in Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Multivalent counterion-induced bridging interactions have been identified as the key mechanism of drastic collapse of the height of polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes. In this article, we employ all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to quantify the bridging interactions in PE brushes for counterions of different sizes and valences. We identify that unlike the current notion, bridging interactions are not the sole function of the counterion valence. Rather the bridging interactions depend on the fraction of counterions (of a given type) that get physically condensed on the PE backbone as well as the size of the counterion solvation shell. These mechanisms ensure that certain monovalent counterions demonstrate much stronger bridging interactions than that witnessed for certain divalent and trivalent counterions, while certain counterions of identical valences show drastically different bridging. Here, we argue that these counterion-specific bridging interactions eventually enable not only the significant reduction of the PE brush height in presence of certain multivalent screening counterions, but may also give rise to scenarios where the brush height reduction for certain monovalent counterions is larger than certain divalent and trivalent counterions. This latter observation contradicts the experimental findings where the multivalent counterions invariably led to a larger decrease in the height of the PE brushes: we argue that this discrepancy stems from the fact that in our simulations we only consider densely grafted and short (and hence less flexible) PE brushes that hinder the formation of different laterally inhomogeneous structures (like pinned micelles and cylindrical bundles) that would have led to a larger brush height reduction (in experiments, which invariably consider longer and less densely grafted brushes, the formation of such inhomogeneous structures are primarily responsible for larger brush height reduction in presence of multivalent counterions). Finally, we also probe the dynamic properties of the counterions (i.e., their time-dependent displacements) and their bridging interactions (i.e., lifetime of bridging interactions).

Yielding Behavior of Bottlebrush and Linear Block Copolymers

Block copolymers can exhibit a pronounced yield stress, but the impact of molecular architecture, chemistry, and self-assembly on macroscopic rheology remains poorly understood. Here, we study the linear-viscoelastic and yield-stress fluid behavior of two architectures—bottlebrush copolymers (with statistical or blocky sequences) and linear diblocks—that self-assemble into body-centered cubic (BCC) spheres and hexagonally close-packed cylinders (HEX). The dynamic properties of these polymers were probed by oscillatory frequency and amplitude sweeps at temperatures well below the order–disorder transition (TODT) to furnish insights into the yielding transition. All BCC-forming polymers have a similar signature of yielding: smaller yield strains (γ yBCC ≈ 0.053 < γ y,HEX ≈ 0.18), sharper solid–liquid transitions, and better reversibility than HEX. Statistical bottlebrushes show the most frequency-independent structural modulus (G 0 ) and no signs of defect relaxation. A simple power-law relationship captures the dependence of the normalized structural modulus (G 0 /RT) on the inter-micelle distance (d) across different architectures and morphologies [G 0 /(RT) = 1.31 × 10 4 (nm 2.6 mol/m 3 ) d –2.6 ]. These studies establish quantitative structure–property relationships that are relevant in contemporary applications, for example, extrusion-based 3D printing.

Signatures of Thermoreversible Associations in X-ray and Neutron Scattering from Dilute Polyzwitterion Solutions

In aqueous solutions of polyzwitterions (PZs), an interplay between dipole–dipole interactions and hydration of zwitterionic groups can lead to thermoreversible associations, which have been difficult to detect in experiments. Here, in this study, we investigated dilute aqueous solutions of poly(1-(3-sulphonatopropyl)-2-vinylpyridinium) (P2VPPS) using small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS) to probe the structure and neutron spin-echo (NSE) spectroscopy to probe dynamics. The SAXS and SANS data show that the correlation length increases with an increase in the concentration of P2VPPS for three different molecular weights. The addition of 0.1 M NaCl to one of the solutions led to almost no dependence of the correlation length on the concentration. Such a concentration dependence of the correlation length suggests the formation of clusters driven by thermoreversible associations in the solutions. The NSE measurements show that the solutions with a larger correlation length display slower relaxation, reflecting the reduced mobility of larger clusters. These results should be considered as signatures of thermoreversible associations in the solutions of P2VPPS. To establish a quantitative link between local structure (clusters) and dynamics in dilute solutions of P2VPPS, we combined a thermoreversible gelation theory for the structure of PZ solutions (Li, S.-F.; Muthukumar, M. Theory of Thermoreversible Gelation and Anomalous Concentration Fluctuations in Polyzwitterion Solutions. J. Chem. Phys. 2024, 161, 024903) with a model for the dynamics of the clusters (generalized Zimm model), developed in this work. Using such a theoretical framework, we have predicted the distribution of clusters in the solutions probed with SANS and SAXS. With the distributions, the generalized Zimm model has been used to extract the diffusion constant of the clusters and their characteristic size from the NSE data, where the latter agrees with the values estimated from the SAXS/SANS data. These findings confirm the presence of thermoreversible associations and establish a quantitative link between local structure (clusters) and dynamics in dilute solutions of P2VPPS. Furthermore, with growing interest in technological applications, this work can provide useful insights into the structural and dynamical properties of other PZ solutions.

Quantification of Dispersion for Weakly and Strongly Correlated Nanofillers in Polymer Nanocomposites

The dispersion of nanoparticles in viscous polymers is dictated by kinetics, interaction potentials between particles, and interfacial compatibility between the matrix and dispersed phases. It was previously proposed that an analogy can be made between thermally dispersed colloids and kinetically dispersed nanoparticles in viscous media when weak interactions exist between particles allowing for a mean-field description under the Ginzburg criterion such as for carbon black dispersed in polybutadiene elastomer. For these cases, the second virial coefficient can be used to quantify the quality of dispersion; additionally, the nanoscale network mesh size can be calculated, which is related to dynamic properties. However, this approach fails for nanoparticles with surface charges or other specific interactions that lead to correlations. Here, these correlated systems are investigated in the context of the mean-field systems in order to gain a comparative description of dispersion using the network mesh size and a derived virial coefficient. The physical origin of the structural parameters from the proposed model for these correlated systems is investigated.

Defect-Limited Mobility and Defect Thermochemistry in Mixed A-Cation Tin Perovskites: (CH3NH3)1-xCsxSnBr3

Hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors crystallizing in the perovskite structure present a significant opportunity for realizing defect-tolerant semiconductors. In this work, we examine the solid solution, (CH3NH3)1-xCsxSnBr3, and identify the thermochemistry dictating the intrinsic carrier concentrations and how local structural distortions influences this electronic behavior. This family of compounds exhibits the expected systematic trend in decreasing optical gap with the cesium to methylammonium A-site mixing ratio, x, in the visible region. However, the carrier mobility, as determined from time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements, trends opposite to that expected from first-principles calculations combined with Boltzmann scattering theory calculations of the carrier mobility. We propose that this is a result of increasing carrier scattering with x in (CH3NH3)1-xCsxSnBr3 due to a significant increase in the carrier density with x. By examining the dependence of the carrier density as a function of x, we infer the compositional-dependence of the average enthalpy and nonconfigurational entropy per defect. While diffraction reveals a cubic aristotypic perovskite structure as a function of x at room temperature, the pair distribution functions obtained from synchrotron X-ray total scattering from these materials are better described by symmetry-adapted displacement modes of the Pm3m crystal structure, which we attribute to a large degree of anharmonic dynamics of the atom positions. This analysis shows that CH3NH3+-rich compositions retain mostly linear Sn-Br-Sn bonding environments through the displacements, while Cs+-rich compositions lead to more significantly bent Sn-Br-Sn environments. We propose that these bent bonding arrangements in Cs-rich compositions yield a higher propensity for defect formation. This also provides a rationale for carrier trapping that gives rise to anomalous microwave transients. Together, these results provide insight into the structure-dynamics-properties relationships in this highly anharmonic system with high amplitude atomic motions and low defect formation energies.

A Model Intercomparison Study to Investigate Mixing Characteristics in Non‐Precipitating Stratocumulus Clouds

Recent aircraft observations of marine stratocumulus clouds consistently showed that cloud microphysical relationships vary with altitude, indicating inhomogeneous mixing characteristics near cloud top and homogeneous mixing characteristics in mid-levels of clouds. Here, we conduct model intercomparison of an idealized, non-precipitating stratocumulus cloud to evaluate model consistency and examine whether simulations can reproduce the observed mixing characteristics. The results show that eleven large-eddy simulations with various dynamics and microphysics schemes show good agreement on the thermodynamical, microphysical, and dynamical properties of the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer in a steady state. The inter-model spread in steady-state liquid water path is significantly reduced compared to previous model intercomparison studies. This improvement might be due to better models and more consistent initial conditions than those used decades ago. In addition, most simulations, including a low-dimensional simulation, capture inhomogeneous mixing characteristics near the cloud top and homogeneous mixing characteristics inside the cloud. Moreover, simulations using Lagrangian microphysics schemes agree better with the observed mixing characteristics compared with those using the bin microphysics schemes. Since most simulations do not fully resolve the entrainment process, the apparent mixing characteristics arise from the variations in the resolved cloud properties. Our results support the vertical circulation mixing hypothesis, which suggests that homogeneous mixing characteristics in mid-levels of clouds are due to the vertical circulation of entrainment-affected and diluted parcels from the cloud top moved to lower levels.

Dynamic control and quantification of active sites on ceria for CO activation and hydrogenation

Ceria (CeO 2 ) is a widely used oxide catalyst, yet the nature of its active sites remains elusive. This study combines model and powder catalyst studies to elucidate the structure-activity relationships in ceria-catalyzed CO activation and hydrogenation. Well-defined ceria clusters are synthesized on planar CeO 2 (111) and exhibit dynamic and tunable ranges of Ce coordination numbers, which enhance their interaction with CO. Reduced ceria clusters (e.g., Ce 3 O 3 ) bind CO strongly and facilitate its dissociation, while near-stoichiometric clusters (e.g., Ce 3 O 7 ) adsorb CO weakly and promote oxidation via carbonate formation. Unlike planar ceria surfaces, supported ceria clusters exhibit dynamic properties and enhanced catalytic activity, that mimic those of powder ceria catalysts. Insight from model studies provide a method to quantify active sites on powder ceria and guide further optimization of ceria catalysts for syngas conversion. This work marks a leap toward model-guided catalyst design and highlights the importance of site-specific catalysis.

Intersystem crossing and exciton–defect coupling of spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride

Despite the recognition of two-dimensional (2D) systems as emerging and scalable host materials of single-photon emitters or spin qubits, the uncontrolled, and undetermined chemical nature of these quantum defects has been a roadblock to further development. Leveraging the design of extrinsic defects can circumvent these persistent issues and provide an ultimate solution. Here, we established a complete theoretical framework to accurately and systematically design quantum defects in wide-bandgap 2D systems. With this approach, essential static and dynamical properties are equally considered for spin qubit discovery. In particular, many-body interactions such as defect–exciton couplings are vital for describing excited state properties of defects in ultrathin 2D systems. Meanwhile, nonradiative processes such as phonon-assisted decay and intersystem crossing rates require careful evaluation, which competes together with radiative processes. From a thorough screening of defects based on first-principles calculations, we identify promising single-photon emitters such as Si VV and spin qubits such as Ti VV and Mo VV in hexagonal boron nitride. This work provided a complete first-principles theoretical framework for defect design in 2D materials.

DefectTrack: a deep learning-based multi-object tracking algorithm for quantitative defect analysis of in-situ TEM videos in real-time

Abstract In-situ irradiation transmission electron microscopy (TEM) offers unique insights into the millisecond-timescale post-cascade process, such as the lifetime and thermal stability of defect clusters, vital to the mechanistic understanding of irradiation damage in nuclear materials. Converting in-situ irradiation TEM video data into meaningful information on defect cluster dynamic properties (e.g., lifetime) has become the major technical bottleneck. Here, we present a solution called the DefectTrack , the first dedicated deep learning-based one-shot multi-object tracking (MOT) model capable of tracking cascade-induced defect clusters in in-situ TEM videos in real-time. DefectTrack has achieved a Multi-Object Tracking Accuracy (MOTA) of 66.43% and a Mostly Tracked (MT) of 67.81% on the test set, which are comparable to state-of-the-art MOT algorithms. We discuss the MOT framework, model selection, training, and evaluation strategies for in-situ TEM applications. Further, we compare the DefectTrack with four human experts in quantifying defect cluster lifetime distributions using statistical tests and discuss the relationship between the material science domain metrics and MOT metrics. Our statistical evaluations on the defect lifetime distribution suggest that the DefectTrack outperforms human experts in accuracy and speed.

Quantum simulation of fundamental particles and forces

Key static and dynamic properties of matter — from creation in the Big Bang to evolution into subatomic and astrophysical environments — arise from the underlying fundamental quantum fields of the standard model and their effective descriptions. However, the simulation of these properties lies beyond the capabilities of classical computation alone. Advances in quantum technologies have improved control over quantum entanglement and coherence to the point at which robust simulations of quantum fields are anticipated in the foreseeable future. In this Perspective article, we discuss the emerging area of quantum simulations of standard-model physics, outlining the challenges and opportunities for progress in the context of nuclear and high-energy physics.

Origin of short- and medium-range order in supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations

Phase-change materials such as Ge–Sb–Te compounds have attracted much attention due to their potential value in electrical data storage. In contrast to the amorphous and crystalline phases, supercooled liquids are far from being deeply understood despite their inevitable role in both amorphization and crystallization processes. To this end, we have studied the dynamics properties and structural characteristics of liquid and supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 during the fast cooling process. As the temperature decreases, chemical bonds become more homogeneous, but coordination numbers of Ge, Sb and Te atoms change very little. Meanwhile, the structural order of short-range configuration is obviously enhanced. Further studies suggest that Ge-centered, Sb-centered and Te-centered configurations change to the more ordered defective octahedrons mainly by adjusting the bond-angle relationship and bond length, rather than just by changing the coordination environment. It is the more ordered octahedrons that promote the formation of medium-range order. Our findings provide a deep insight into the origin of local structural order in supercooled liquid Ge 3 Sb 2 Te 6 , which is of great importance for the comprehensive understanding of amorphization and crystallization processes.

Structural origin of disorder-induced ion conduction in NaFePO 4 cathode materials

Diffusion in NaFePO 4 can be enhanced through amorphization. Based on computations using DFT and machine learning potentials, we ascribe this phenomenon to the formation of less constrained Na-ion environments upon disordering. Most modern battery technologies depend on solid-state crystalline cathode materials. However, some of these materials are constrained by the low ionic conductivity of their most stable phases. An example of this is maricite (NaFePO 4 ). Interestingly, experiments have shown that maricite can improve its rate capability through disordering (amorphization). However, experimental characterization of amorphous cathode materials remains a major challenge, hindering a clear understanding of the structural origin of the disorder-induced improvement in sodium-ion mobility. To address this, we here employ molecular dynamics simulations by first training a machine learning potential for NaFePO 4 based on the atomic cluster expansion approach and a batch active learning potential parameterization scheme. This potential is then applied to explore the structural and dynamical properties of NaFePO 4 glasses as cathode materials. Specifically, we investigate the effect of glass structure on sodium-ion diffusion, revealing the relative influences of short-range and medium-range order features. We find significant heterogeneity in sodium-ion diffusivity in the glass, with fast-conducting ions residing in less constrained atomic environments with fewer P and Fe neighbors. These more mobile ions are also surrounded by larger ring-type structures. Overall, the results and developed approach present promising avenues for developing high-performance glassy cathodes for next-generation batteries.

CAPOS: The bulge Cluster APOgee Survey: III. Spectroscopic tomography of Tonantzintla 2

Here, we performed the first detailed spectral analysis of red giant members of the relatively high-metallicity globular cluster (GC) Tononzintla 2 (Ton 2) using high-resolution near-infrared spectra collected with the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment II survey (APOGEE-2), obtained as part of the bulge Cluster APOgee Survey. We investigated chemical abundances for a variety of species including the light, odd-Z, α-, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements from high S/N spectra of seven giant members. The derived mean cluster metallicity is [Fe/H] = –0.70 ± 0.05, with no evidence for an intrinsic metallicity spread. Ton 2 exhibits a typical α-enrichment that follows the trend for high-metallicity Galactic GCs, similar to that seen in 47 Tucanae and NGC 6380. We find a significant nitrogen spread (> 0.87 dex), and a large fraction of nitrogen-enriched stars that populate the cluster. Given the relatively high-metallicity of Ton 2, these nitrogen-enriched stars are well above the typical Galactic levels, indicating the prevalence of the multiple-population phenomenon in this cluster that also contains several stars with typical low first-generation N abundances. We also identify the presence of [Ce/Fe] abundance spread in Ton 2, which is correlated with the nitrogen enhancement, indicating that the s-process enrichment in this cluster has likely been produced by relatively low-mass asymptotic giant branch stars. Furthermore, we find a mean radial velocity of the cluster, –178.6 ± 0.86 km s –1 , with a small velocity dispersion, 2.99 ± 0.61 km s –1 , which is typical of GCs. We also find a prograde bulge-like orbit for Ton 2 that appears to be radial and highly eccentric. Finally, the considerably nitrogen-enhanced population observed in Ton 2, combined with its dynamical properties, makes this object a potential progenitor for the nitrogen-enriched field stars identified so far toward the bulge region at similar metallicity.

Horizon-scale variability of M87* from 2017–2021 EHT observations

Here, we report three epochs of polarized images of M87* at 230 GHz using data from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) taken in 2017, 2018, and 2021. The baseline coverage of the 2021 observations is significantly improved through the addition of two new EHT stations: the 12 m Kitt Peak Telescope and the Northern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA). All observations result in images dominated by a bright, asymmetric ring with a persistent diameter of 43.9 ± 0.6 µas, consistent with expectations for lensed synchrotron emission encircling the apparent shadow of a supermassive black hole. We find that the total intensity and linear polarization of M87* vary significantly across the three epochs. Specifically, the azimuthal brightness distribution of the total intensity images varies from year to year, as expected for a stochastic accretion flow. However, despite a gamma-ray flare erupting in M87 quasi-contemporaneously to the 2018 observations, the 2018 and 2021 images look remarkably similar. The resolved linear polarization fractions in 2018 and 2021 peak at ∼5%, compared to ∼15% in 2017. The spiral polarization pattern on the ring also varies from year to year, including a change in the electric vector position angle helicity in 2021 that could reflect changes in the magnetized accretion flow or an external Faraday screen. The improved 2021 coverage also provides the first EHT constraints on jet emission outside the ring, on scales of ≲ 1 mas. Overall, these observations provide strong proof of the reliability of the EHT images and probe the dynamic properties of the horizon-scale accretion flow surrounding M87*.
