Cyclotron Road Partnership (CRADA Final Report)

The Cyclotron Road program was launched in 2015 by LBNL, with support from the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO), to accelerate technical innovation in the energy sector. The program brought scientist-entrepreneurs to LBNL to access unique research assets and expertise. In 2016, LBNL partnered with Activate Global, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit, to expand the program and provide enhanced access to capital and business support services. Under this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), LBNL provided technical support and expertise, while Activate engaged with private sector, philanthropic, and government partners to support innovators and research-phase small businesses, aiming to translate high-impact materials and manufacturing technologies from lab to market. The program received funding from various sponsors, including the DOE, DARPA, and the California Energy Commission, and was managed through a collaborative framework that maintained accountability by the participant organization and Berkeley Lab regarding roles and tasks relevant to this collaboration.

Cyclotron Production of PET Radiometals in Liquid Targets: Aspects and Prospects

: The present review describes the methodological aspects and prospects of the productionof Positron Emission Tomography (PET) radiometals in a liquid target using low-medium energymedical cyclotrons. The main objective of this review is to delineate and discuss the critical factorsinvolved in the liquid target production of radiometals, including type of salt solution, solutioncomposition, beam energy, beam current, the effect of irradiation duration (length of irradiation)and challenges posed by in-target chemistry in relation with irradiation parameters. We also summarizethe optimal parameters for the production of various radiometals in liquid targets. : Additionally, we discuss the future prospects of PET radiometals production in the liquid targetsfor academic research and clinical applications. Significant emphasis has been given to the productionof 68 Ga using liquid targets due to the growing demand for 68 Ga labeled PSMA vectors, [ 68 Ga]-Ga-DOTATATE, [ 68 Ga]Ga-DOTANOC and some upcoming 68 Ga labeled radiopharmaceuticals.Other PET radiometals included in the discussion are 86 Y, 63 Zn and 89 Zr.

Bi-Kappa Proton Mirror and Cyclotron Instabilities in the Solar Wind

Abstract The charged particles in the solar wind are often observed to possess a nonthermal tail in the velocity distribution function, a feature that can be fitted with the Kappa model. The anisotropic, or bi-Kappa, model of protons, electrons, and other charged particles is thus adopted in the literature for interpreting the data as well as in the context of the analysis of wave–particle interactions. The present paper develops an approximate but efficient theory of the mirror and cyclotron instabilities excited by the bi-Kappa protons in the solar wind. A velocity moment-based quasi-linear theory of these instabilities is also formulated in order to investigate the saturation behavior. Applications of the formalism are made for instabilities close to the marginally unstable state, which is typical of the solar wind near 1 au.

Interaction of Inner Heliosheath Ions with Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves

Abstract Inner heliosheath (IHS) ions are expected to be exposed to various waves, shocks, and turbulence, which can affect ion distributions and thus their charge-exchange rates with interstellar neutral atoms. This work addresses the potential significance of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves under expected IHS conditions. From a kinetic dispersion relation, we find the possibility of frequent triggering of EMIC instability in the IHS. The threshold anisotropy of proton temperatures required for the instability is small, ( T ⊥ – T ∣∣ )/ T ∣∣ ≈ 0.1 or less, mainly due to high plasma β (ratio of the plasma to magnetic pressures). Numerical calculations on the scattering of ions (protons, He + , and He 2+ with energy of 0.01–50 keV) based on two models for EMIC waves with a moderate intensity indicate significant scattering in the pitch angle (mostly a few tens of degrees) and energy (mostly a few tens of percent) although details depend on the energy and pitch angle of each species and adopted EMIC wave models. This occurs on a short timescale (<100 times the gyro-period of each ion species). Resonant scattering in a few to a few tens of keV (corresponding to the expected pickup ion energy in the IHS) is easily expected unless the wavenumber is too large. The scattering effect is distinguished among different species such that for lower gyrofrequency ions (He + versus He 2+ and He 2+ versus protons), the main scattering effect moves toward a lower energy domain. All these results imply continuous disturbance of ion distributions by possibly prevailing EMIC waves in the IHS.

WEST actively cooled load resilient ion cyclotron resonance heating system results

Three identical new WEST ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) antennas have been designed, assembled then commissioned on plasma from 2013 to 2019. The WEST ICRH system is both load-resilient and compatible with long-pulse operations. The three antennas have been successfully operated together on plasma in 2019 and 2020, with up to 5.8 MW of coupled power. The load resilience capability has been demonstrated and the antenna feedback controls for phase and matching have been developed. The breakdown detection systems have been validated and successfully protected the antennas. The use of ICRH in combination with lower hybrid has triggered the first high confinement mode transitions identified on WEST.
