Flavor-violating Higgs and Z boson decays at a future circular lepton collider

Recent advances in b , c , and s quark tagging coupled with novel statistical analysis techniques will allow future high energy and high statistics electron-positron colliders, such as the FCC-ee, to place phenomenologically relevant bounds on flavor violating Higgs and Z decays to quarks. We assess the FCC-ee reach for Z / h → b s , c u decays as a function of jet tagging performance. We also update the standard model (SM) predictions for the corresponding branching ratios, as well as the indirect constraints on the flavor violating Higgs and Z couplings to quarks. Using the type III two Higgs doublet model as an example of beyond the standard model physics, we show that the searches for h → b s , c u decays at FCC-ee can probe new parameter space not excluded by indirect searches. We also reinterpret the FCC-ee reach for Z → b s , c u in terms of the constraints on models with vectorlike quarks. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

TeV-scale lepton number violation: Connecting leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay, and colliders

In the context of TeV-scale lepton number violating (LNV) interactions, we illustrate the interplay between leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay, and LNV searches at proton-proton colliders. Using a concrete model for illustration, we overcome the limitations of previous effective field theory analyses and are able to identify the parameter space where standard thermal leptogenesis is rendered unviable due to washout processes. Moreover, we show how 0 ν β β decay and p p collisions provide complementary probes. We find that the new particle spectrum can have a decisive impact on the relative sensitivity of these two probes. Photoproduction of fully charmed tetraquark at electron-ion colliders

In this work, we investigate the inclusive photoproduction of the C -odd, S -wave fully charmed tetraquark at electron-ion colliders within the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization framework, at the lowest order in velocity and α s . The value of the NRQCD long-distance matrix element is estimated from two phenomenological potential models. Our studies reveal that the photoproduction of the 1 + − fully charmed tetraquark may be difficult to observe at HERA and the EicC; nevertheless, its observation prospects at the EIC appear to be bright. Extracting the partonic structure of colorless exchanges at the Electron Ion Collider

We investigate the determination of the partonic structure of colorless exchanges in deep inelastic diffractive e p scattering at the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), using the standard decomposition into Pomeron and Reggeon contributions. We perform fits to simulated diffractive cross section pseudodata in four variables, including the momentum transfer t , to estimate the achievable precision on the Pomeron and Reggeon quark and gluon distributions. We analyze the influence of different cuts in the kinematic variables, beam energy configurations, and luminosities, including a “first year” scenario. We conclude that the EIC will be able to constrain the partonic structure of the subleading Reggeon exchange with a precision comparable to that of the leading Pomeron exchange. Discovering neutrino tridents at the Large Hadron Collider

Neutrino trident production of dilepton pairs is well recognized as a sensitive probe of both electroweak physics and physics beyond the Standard Model. Although a rare process, it could be significantly boosted by such new physics, and it also allows the electroweak theory to be tested in a new regime. We demonstrate that the forward neutrino physics program at the Large Hadron Collider offers a promising opportunity to measure for the first time, dimuon neutrino tridents with a statistical significance exceeding 5 σ , improving on the previous claims at the ∼ 3 σ level by the CHARM-II and CCFR collaborations while accounting for additional backgrounds later identified by the NuTeV collaboration. We present predictions for various proposed experiments and outline a specific experimental strategy to identify the signal and mitigate backgrounds, based on “reverse tracking” dimuon pairs in the FASER ν 2 detector. We also discuss prospects for constraining beyond Standard Model contributions to neutrino trident rates at high energies. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

General mass variable flavor number scheme for 𝑍 boson production in association with a heavy quark at hadron colliders

We present a methodology to streamline implementation of massive-quark radiative contributions in calculations with a variable number of active partons in proton-proton collisions. The methodology introduces subtraction and residual heavy-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) to implement calculations in the Aivazis–Collins–Olness–Tung (ACOT) factorization scheme and its simplified realization in various processes up to the next-to-the-next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling strength. Interpolation tables for bottom-quark subtraction and residual distributions for CT18 NLO and NNLO PDF ensembles are provided in the common LHAPDF6 format. A numerical calculation of 𝑍-boson production with at least one 𝑏 jet at the Large Hadron Collider beyond the lowest order in QCD is considered for illustration purposes.

Azimuthal angular correlation of J/ψ plus jet production at the electron-ion collider

By investigating the soft gluon radiation in the J/ψ plus jet photoproduction at the electron-ion collider (EIC), we demonstrate that the azimuthal angular correlations between the leading jet and heavy quarkonium provide a unique probe to the production mechanism of the latter. In particular, a significant cos⁡(φ) asymmetry is found for the color-singlet channel, whereas it vanishes or has an opposite sign for color-octet production, depending on the jet transverse momentum. Numerical results of cos⁡(φ) and cos⁡(2⁢φ) asymmetries employing both the color-singlet model and the nonrelativistic QCD approach are presented for typical kinematics at the future EIC.

Locality in collider tests of quantum mechanics with top quark pairs

Tests of quantum properties of fundamental particles in high energy colliders are starting to appear. Entanglement and Bell inequality violation in top and antitop quark system is of particular interest since top quarks are unstable particles that undergo a cascade decay. We argue for criteria for the spacelike separation between top and antitop quarks at their different decay stages. We considered causal separation at three different instances: at the top quark decay, at the 𝑊 boson decay, and at the lepton/jet contact with the macroscopic apparatus. We showed that the spacelike fraction of events is the smallest, when requiring that both top quarks and 𝑊 bosons decay within the spacelike interval. For high invariant masses, typically required for the Bell inequality violation, this is almost identical to just the top quark decay requirement. We also include an option for the angular correlation of the 𝑏 quarks from top quark decay to be used for the spin correlation measurement. We require that both top quark and 𝑏 hadron decays are spacelike separated. Again, we find that at high invariant masses it is almost identical to just the requirement of spacelike separation between top and antitop quarks. We provide numerical values for our proposed criteria. If such a criterion is satisfied, the system is guaranteed to not be in a causal connection.

Constraints on the maximal number of dark degrees of freedom from black hole evaporation, cosmic rays, colliders, and supernovae

A dark sector with a very large number of massive degrees of freedom is generically constrained by radiative corrections to Newton’s constant. However, there are caveats to this statement, especially if the degrees of freedom are light or massless. Here, we examine in detail and update a number of constraints on the possible number of dark degrees of freedom, including from black hole evaporation, from perturbations to systems including an evaporating black hole, from direct gravitational production at colliders, from high-energy cosmic rays, and from supernovae energy losses. Exploring orbital angular momentum and spin-orbit correlations for gluons at the Electron-Ion Collider

In our previous work [S. Bhattacharya , ], we introduced a pioneering observable aimed at experimentally detecting the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of gluons. Our focus was on the longitudinal double spin asymmetry observed in exclusive dijet production during electron-proton scattering. We demonstrated the sensitivity of the cos ϕ angular correlation between the scattered electron and proton as a probe for gluon OAM at small x and its intricate interplay with gluon helicity. This current work provides a comprehensive exposition, diving further into the aforementioned calculation with added elaboration and in-depth analysis. We reveal that, in addition to the gluon OAM, one also gains access to the spin-orbit correlation of gluons. We supplement our work with a detailed numerical analysis of our observables for the kinematics of the Electron-Ion Collider. In addition to dijet production, we also consider the recently proposed semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering process, which potentially offers experimental advantages over dijet measurements. Finally, we investigate quark-channel contributions to these processes and find an unexpected breakdown of collinear factorization. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Building the case for forward muon detection at a muon collider

We survey the opportunities offered by the detection of the forward muons that accompany the creation of neutral effective vector bosons at a muon collider, in different kinematic regimes. Vectors with relatively low energy produce the Higgs boson and the extended muon angular coverage enables studies of the Higgs properties, such as the measurement of the inclusive production cross section and the branching ratio to invisible final states. New heavy particles could be produced by vectors of higher energy, through Higgs portal interactions. If the new particles are invisible, the detection of the forward muons is essential in order to search for this scenario. The angular correlations of the forward muons are sensitive to the quantum interference between the vector-boson helicity amplitudes and can be exploited for the characterization of vector-boson scattering and fusion processes. This is illustrated by analyzing the C P properties of the Higgs coupling to the Z boson. Our findings provide a physics case and a set of benchmarks for the design of a dedicated forward muon detector. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Neutrino-portal dark matter detection prospects at a future muon collider

With no concrete evidence for nongravitational interactions of dark matter to date, it is natural to wonder whether dark matter couples predominantly to the Standard Model (SM)’s neutrinos. Neutrino interactions (and the possible existence of additional neutrinophilic mediators) are substantially less understood than those of other SM particles, yet this picture will change dramatically in the coming decades with new neutrino sources. One potential new source arises with the construction of a high-energy muon collider (MuCol); due to muons’ instability, a MuCol is a source of high-energy collimated neutrinos. Importantly, since the physics of muon decays (into neutrinos) is very well-understood, this leads to a neutrino flux with systematic uncertainties far smaller than fluxes from conventional high-energy (proton-sourced) neutrino beams. In this work, we study the capabilities of a potential neutrino detector, “ MuCol ν ”, placed ∼ 100 m downstream of the MuCol interaction point. The MuCol ν detector would be especially capable of searching for a neutrinophilic mediator ϕ through the mononeutrino scattering process ν μ N → μ + ϕ X , exceeding searches from other terrestrial approaches for m ϕ in the ∼ few MeV- ten GeV range. Even with a 10 kg-yr exposure, MuCol ν is capable of searching for well-motivated classes of thermal freeze-out and freeze-in neutrino-portal dark matter. alaric parton shower for hadron colliders

We introduce the parton shower for simulating quantum chromodynamics (QCD) radiation at hadron colliders and present numerical results from an implementation in the event generator . provides a consistent framework to quantify certain systematic uncertainties which cannot be eliminated by comparing the parton shower with analytic resummation. In particular, it allows us to study recoil effects away from the soft and collinear limits without the need to change the evolution variable or the splitting functions. We assess the performance of in Drell-Yan lepton pair and QCD jet production, and present the first multijet merging for the new algorithm. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Multigluon Correlations and Evidence of Saturation from Dijet Measurements at an Electron-Ion Collider

In this work, we study inclusive and diffractive dijet production in electron-proton and electron-nucleus collisions within the color glass condensate effective field theory. We compute dijet cross sections differentially in both mean dijet transverse momentum P and recoil momentum Δ , as well as the anisotropy in the relative angle between P and Δ . Our results cover a much larger kinematic range than accessible in previous computations performed in the correlation limit approximation, where it is assumed that | P | &raquo | Δ | . We validate this approximation in its range of applicability and quantify its failure for | P | ≲ | Δ | . We also predict significant target-dependent deviations from the correlation limit approximation for | P | > | Δ | and | P | ≲ Q s , which offers a straightforward test of gluon saturation and access to multigluon distributions at a future Electron-Ion Collider.

Multiscale Imaging of Nuclear Deformation at the Electron-Ion Collider

We show within the Color Glass Condensate framework that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus at multiple length scales. Studying e+U collisions and varying the deformation of the uranium target, we demonstrate that larger deformations result in enhanced incoherent vector meson production cross sections. Further, different multipole deformation parameters affect different regions of transverse momentum transfer. Employing JIMWLK evolution to study the Bjorken-x dependence of our results, we find that the ratio of incoherent to coherent cross sections decreases with decreasing x, largely independently of the quadrupole deformation of the target. Comparing results for the same process using 20 Ne targets with 16 O targets, we find that differences in deformation are clearly visible in the incoherent cross section. These findings show that certain observables at the Electron-Ion Collider are very sensitive to nuclear structure. Consequently, deformations need to be taken into account when interpreting experimental results. More importantly, this also means that |t|-differential diffractive vector meson production could become a powerful tool, enabling the most direct measurements of nuclear structure at different length scales, ranging from nuclear deformation at low |t| to nucleon and subnucleon-size scales at higher |t|.

Probing the Quark Orbital Angular Momentum at Electron-Ion Colliders Using Exclusive π 0 Production

We propose to detect signals from quark orbital angular momentum (OAM) through exclusive π 0 production in electron- (longitudinally polarized) proton collisions. Our analysis demonstrates that the sin 2 ϕ azimuthal angular correlation between the transverse momentum of the scattered electron and the recoil proton serves as a sensitive probe of quark OAM. Additionally, we present a numerical estimate of the asymmetry associated with this correlation for the kinematics accessible at the Electron-Ion Colliders in the U.S. and China. This study aims to pave the way for the first experimental study of quark OAM in relation to the Jaffe-Manohar spin sum rule. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Upper limit on the chiral magnetic effect in isobar collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon that arises from the QCD anomaly in the presence of an external magnetic field. The experimental search for its evidence has been one of the key goals of the physics program of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The STAR Collaboration has previously presented the results of a blind analysis of isobar collisions ( Ru 44 96 + Ru 44 96 , Zr 40 96 + Zr 40 96 ) in the search for the CME. The isobar ratio ( Y ) of CME-sensitive observable, charge separation scaled by elliptic anisotropy, is close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio, the naive background baseline. This indicates the potential existence of a CME signal and the presence of remaining nonflow background due to two- and three-particle correlations, which are different between the isobars. In this postblind analysis, we estimate the contributions from those nonflow correlations as a background baseline to Y , utilizing the isobar data as well as Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator simulations. This baseline is found consistent with the isobar ratio measurement, and an upper limit of 10% at 95% confidence level is extracted for the CME fraction in the charge separation measurement in isobar collisions at s NN = 200 GeV. Fully plasma-based electron injector for a linear collider or XFEL

We demonstrate through high-fidelity particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations a simple approach for efficiently generating 20 + GeV electron beams with the necessary charge, energy spread, and emittance for use as an injector in a future linear collider or a next generation XFEL. A high quality injected bunch is generated by self-focusing an unmatched electron driver in a nonlinear plasma wakefield. Over pump depletion distances, the drive beam dynamics and self-loading effects lead to high energy, low-energy spread output beams. For plasma densities of 10 18 c⁢m −3 , PIC simulation results indicate that self-injected beams with 0.52 n⁢C charge can be accelerated to 20 GeV with projected core energy spreads of ≲ 1%, normalized slice emittances of 110n⁢m, peak normalized brightness of ≳ 10 19 A/m 2 /rad 2 , and transfer efficiencies of ≳ 44%.
