Simple Analytic Expressions for the Magnetic Field of a Circular Current Loop

Analytic expressions for the magnetic induction (magnetic flux density, B) of a simple planar circular current loop have been published in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates [1,2], and are also known implicitly in spherical coordinates [3]. In this paper, we present explicit analytic expressions for B and its spatial derivatives in Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates for a filamentary current loop. These results were obtained with extensive use of Mathematica "TM" and are exact throughout all space outside of the conductor. The field expressions reduce to the well-known limiting cases and satisfy V · B = 0 and V x B = 0 outside the conductor. These results are general and applicable to any model using filamentary circular current loops. Solenoids of arbitrary size may be easily modeled by approximating the total magnetic induction as the sum of those for the individual loops. The inclusion of the spatial derivatives expands their utility to magnetohydrodynamics where the derivatives are required. The equations can be coded into any high-level programming language. It is necessary to numerically evaluate complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kind, but this capability is now available with most programming packages.

Multi-Body Capture to Low-altitude Circular Orbits at Europa

For capture to a 200-km circular orbit around Europa, millions of different points along the orbit are simulated in the Jupiter-Europa Restricted 3-Body Problem. The transfers exist as members of families of trajectories, where certain families consistently outperform the others. The trajectories are not sensitive to changes in inclination for the final circular orbit. The top performing trajectories appear to follow the invariant manifolds of L2 Lyapunov orbits for capture into a retrograde orbit, and in some cases saving up to 40% of the from the patched 2-body problem. Transfers are attached to the current nominal mission for NASA's Jupiter-Europa Orbiter, where the total cost is roughly 100 m/s less than the baseline mission.

The Intermediate Wake of a Thick Flat Plate with a Circular Trailing Edge

The intermediate wake region of a thick flat plate with a circular trailing edge (TE) is investigated with a direct numerical simulation (DNS). The upper and lower separating boundary layers are both turbulent and are statistically identical; the resulting wake is symmetric in the mean. Earlier research dealt with the near/very-near wake of the same plate (x/D < 13.0, x is the streamwise distance from the center of the circular TE and D is the plate-thickness/TE-diameter). In the present investigation the emphasis is on the evolution of shed-vortex structure and turbulence intensity distributions with increasing x; the focus is on the region 20.0 < x/D < 40.0. Profile similarity in wake velocity statistics is explored.

Computation and Analysis of Jupiter-Europa and Jupiter-Ganymede Resonant Orbits in the Planar Concentric Circular Restricted 4-body Problem

Many unstable periodic orbits of the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (PCRTBP) persist as invariant tori when a periodic forcing is added to the equa- tions of motion. In this study, we compute tori corresponding to exterior Jupiter- Europa and interior Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP resonant periodic orbits in a con- centric circular restricted 4-body problem (CCR4BP). Motivated by the 2:1 Laplace resonance between Europa and Ganymede’s orbits, we then attempt the continu- ation of a Jupiter-Europa 3:4 resonant orbit from the CCR4BP into the Jupiter- Ganymede PCRTBP. We strongly believe that the resulting dynamical object is a KAM torus lying near but not on the 3:2 Jupiter-Ganymede resonance.

All-Metal Dual Band Circular Polarized UHF Patch Antenna

An all-metal circularly polarized UHF antenna element is presented. The patch antenna gives a wideband impedance and axial ratio bandwidth of 24% over the 0.3-0.38 GHz frequency band with 90% efficiency. The main advantage is the use of a single feed point to generate circular polarization (CP). The antenna can be used to set up a dual-band (0.3-0.32 GHz and 0.36-0.38 GHz) communication link, with an axial ratio better than 3 dB and a realized CP gain better than 8 dBiC and 10 dBiC, respectively. The interaction between the cavity walls and the patch element, results in near-field coupling and improves the impedance bandwidth as well as the axial ratio bandwidth of the antenna. Being a high gain, high aperture efficiency, low profile, light weight, and single feed point radiating element, this single patch antenna is an excellent candidate for future antenna array.

The Role of Innovation in the Circularity of EV Lithium-Ion Batteries

This case study analysis highlights the role of innovations in EV battery design (cells, modules, and packs), reverse supply chain, and recycling processes in yielding value for the economics of recycling (and have the largest impact on the circularity of LIBs). Part of the assessment of value will be a semi-quantitative evaluation of the value of resilience in the rapidly evolving LIB market – i.e., there are a variety of risks that recyclers would face in making a financial commitment to a recycling facility including; the possibility that batteries would not be collected in sufficient quantities, the market for key constituents (e.g., cobalt) might decrease because of changes in battery chemistry, battery manufacturers may not be willing to pay as much for recycled material, etc. The analysis would be semi-quantitative in that two simple models would be used to assess 1. material flows using a previously developed excel-based reverse supply chain flows model, and 2. A LIB recycling process material and energy balance cost model that will be used to qualitatively assess the cost impacts of process innovations and changes in feed streams. Both sets of models are highly speculative in that they rely on a multitude of assumptions and input values (e.g., EV adoption rates) that vary widely in the literature. Additionally, the initial process flow diagrams and equipment lists for the recycling cost model are based on the Argonne EverBatt model, which is still under development. However, in combination with a critical review of the literature, economic modeling can yield valuable insights into the role of innovation in the circularity of LIBs and high-technology (“energy relevant”) products in general.

A Memory Efficient Lock-Free Circular Queue

Hardware queues are import in many applications, such as data transfer, synchronization of concurrent modules with the need of mutual exclusion constructs. State of the art bounded (of a fixed size) lock free circular queues are implemented either by read/write atomic operations, or barrier conditions, or by separating dequeue and enqueue operations. However, these queues always require an unused element at all the times to safe-guard the front and rear pointers of the queue, so as to avoid data race conditions, which leads to the waste of memory. The waste of memory is especially disadvantageous in applications such as I/O data transfer, and image transfer between processing filters, when large element size is needed, We propose a lock-free solution of the bounded circular queue through read/write atomic operations, but without the need of an extra element in the queue. The proposed solution is implemented and verified in both Verilog and ’C’ languages. We also demonstrate its effectiveness by comparing its area and delay metrics with the implementations of other existing designs of queue.

Lighting Policy Options to Incentivize the Circular Economy

Energy codes and energy efficiency policy are primed for significant shifts in the coming decade. Consumers are increasingly asking manufacturers to take responsibility for products over the course of the product lifespan, including at end-of-life. Consumer demand for social and environmental responsibility may push new codes and policies that incentivize the circular economy. Within the lighting sector, for example, rapid innovations have created large energy savings but also created a complex waste stream. Traditional energy code approaches to lighting efficiency have considered only lighting power density or energy-based metrics. Shifting codes and policy to consider environmental impacts of the product lifecycle could include circular economy mechanisms such as product deposits or service-based business models. In this paper we consider the possible structures for both codes and policies, and provide an analysis of the merits of each policy using life cycle assessment and sustainability index (SI).

Non-circular optical fiber and mode shape converter and method

A class of fibers is described that have a non-circular cross section on one or both ends that can by optimized to capture the optical radiation from a laser diode or diode array and deliver the light in the same or different shape on the opposite end of the fiber. A large multimode rectangular waveguide may be provided which can accept the radiation from a high-power diode bar and transform it into a circular cross section on the opposite end, while preserving brightness.

Advancing environmental assessment of the circular economy: Challenges and opportunities

The lifecycle assessment (LCA) framework is widely applied to comprehensively evaluate and improve the environmental performance of a circular economy (CE). The advances and application of LCA has been primarily restricted to evaluate the environmental performance of the CE at a micro-level, wherein the CE is implemented for a single product system. However, the CE can be operationalized at two broader levels: the meso–level (for eco-industrial parks) and the macro-level (for a city, state, or nation). Six methodological challenges emerge when applying LCA to a meso- or macro-level CE and remain unaddressed in the existing literature. This includes: selecting a relevant system boundary and functional unit, addressing data paucity and uncertainty, accounting for stakeholder behavior, assessing the trade-offs from renewable energy (RE) use, accounting for manufacturing and technology evolution, and quantifying displacement and rebound. This article proposes potential solutions and research priorities to address the above challenges.

Polyolefin Innovations Toward Circularity and Sustainable Alternatives

The unprecedented growth and socioeconomic impacts of polyolefins clearly outline a major success story in the world of polymer science. Polyolefins revolutionizes industries such as health care, construction, and food packaging. Despite the benefits of polyolefins, there is a rising concern for the environment due to high production volume (i.e., fossil fuel consumption), often short usage time, and problems related to waste management and accumulation in the natural environment. Creating a circular economy for polyolefins through effective recycling technologies has the potential to decrease the environmental impact of these materials. This perspective discusses polyolefins and their impact, existing and emerging recycling/upcycling solutions, and recycle-by-design alternatives that are challenging the status quo.

Sustainable recovery of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from coal and coal ash through urban mining: A Nature Based Solution (NBS) for circular economy

The demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has surged in recent years, driven by their crucial role in various industrial applications and their uneven geological distribution. As a result, urban mining from secondary resources, particularly coal and coal ash, has gained traction as a sustainable solution within a circular economy framework. This study highlights the significant presence of REEs in coal and coal ash, revealing that certain samples contain REE concentrations that rival traditional ores. Notably, coal ash has the potential to yield approximately 312,000 tons of REEs annually, far exceeding global demand. The research delves into advanced techniques for analyzing REEs, including elemental, isotopic, and mineralogical studies. Additionally, it explores innovative extraction methods such as the use of green solvents, nature-based solutions, and bioleaching and biosorption. By leveraging coal and its byproducts as secondary resources, this study underscores the opportunity to reduce dependence on conventional mining, enhancing the sustainability of REE recovery. Here, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to highlight technological advancements and emerging opportunities that can address current challenges in this field.

Mono-material product design with bio-based, circular, and biodegradable polymers

The traditional multi-material product design of plastic products significantly complicates both existing and emerging recycling processes. Here, we discuss the concept of mono-material product design, which is based on circular and biodegradable polymers made of a single monomer, delivering tailorable properties via molecular or macromolecular engineering without changing its chemical makeup or composition.

An investigation of hard-disk drive circularity accounting for socio-technical dynamics and data uncertainty

The installed data storage capacity in the U.S. will reach 2.2 Zettabytes by 2025, generating about 50 million units of end-of-life (EOL) hard-disk drives (HDDs) per year. Due to data security concerns, most EOL HDDs are currently shredded (even when still functioning), representing an economic loss. Moreover, raw material extraction linked to the increased demand for storage causes environmental impacts. Besides mitigating the threat posed by sudden restrictions of raw materials, the circular economy (CE) offers to maximize value retention in the economy and reduce the environmental impacts of human activities. Common CE strategies are reusing and recycling products. However, the reuse of hard disk drives is currently burdened by the lack of trust HDD end-users have toward other non-physical means of data removal than shredding. Here, an agent-based modeling (ABM) approach is proposed to explore how techno-economic and social factors affect end-users' decisions to adopt EOL management practices other than shredding. The proposed method also accounts for data uncertainty by applying a semi-quantitative approach. Results demonstrate how increased green procurement and more robust standards could spur end-users' trust toward data-wiping technologies. Even when accounting for uncertainty, HDDs' reuse brings better environmental and economic benefits than HDD shredding followed by material recovery. The semi-quantitative approach proposed in this study could be more universally applied in future ABM, especially given the often-stochastic nature of such models. The developed ABM is also the first to represent several HDD industry stakeholders and demonstrate how the HDD shredding lock-in situation could be resolved.

A systems engineering framework for the optimization of food supply chains under circular economy considerations

The current linear “take-make-waste-extractive” model leads to the depletion of natural resources and environmental degradation. Circular Economy (CE) aims to address these impacts by building supply chains that are restorative, regenerative, and environmentally benign. This can be achieved through the re-utilization of products and materials, the extensive usage of renewable energy sources, and ultimately by closing any open material loops. Such a transition towards environmental, economic and social advancements requires analytical tools for quantitative evaluation of the alternative pathways. Here, in this work, we present a novel CE system engineering framework and decision-making tool for the modeling and optimization of food supply chains. First, the alternative pathways for the production of the desired product and the valorization of wastes and by-products are identified. Then, a Resource-Task-Network representation that captures all these pathways is utilized, based on which a mixed-integer linear programming model is developed. This approach allows the holistic modeling and optimization of the entire food supply chain, taking into account any of its special characteristics, potential constraints as well as different objectives. Considering that typically CE introduces multiple, often conflicting objectives, we deploy here a multi-objective optimization strategy for trade-off analysis. A representative case study for the supply chain of coffee is discussed, illustrating the steps and the applicability of the framework. Single and multi-objective optimization formulations under five different coffee-product demand scenarios are presented. The production of instant coffee as the only final product is shown to be the least energy and environmental efficient scenario. On the contrary, the production solely of whole beans sets a hypothetical upper bound on the optimal energy and environmental utilization. In both problems presented, the amount of energy generated is significant due to the utilization of waste generated for the production of excess energy.
