First Principles Density Functional Theory and NMR Study of Catalytic Adsorption and Formation of Mo/HZSM-5-based Microwave Catalysts

This work is a summary of atomic level catalyst design on a Mo/HZSM-5 zeolite catalyst to determine the formation of Mo carbide species during exposure of CO and CH4. We also look at specific features of the activated form of the catalyst including charge distributions, bond orders, and polarizations that might be susceptible during MW irradiation.

Coupled order parameters and photoinduced domain walls in the charge density wave of (TaSe 4 ) 2 I

The charge density wave in (TaSe 4 ) 2 I has drawn much attention recently as a controversial candidate for an axion insulator where the CDW breaks the chiral symmetry of the Weyl semimetal. Here we use ultrafast x-ray scattering to study the collective modes of this CDW. By measuring several diffraction peaks we find that the order parameter involves coupled optical and acoustic modes. For strong near-infrared excitation, the dynamics of the x-ray diffraction show evidence of photoinduced inversion of both components of the CDW order parameter, and associated domain walls. These results demonstrate the potential of ultrafast methods to induce topological defects through highly nonequilibrium dynamics. In (TaSe 4 ) 2 I these defects should lead to exotic electronic states due to the nontrivial topology of the band structure.

Charging of a large object in low polar Earth orbit

The charging of a large sphere subject to the environment encountered by the shuttle orbiter as it passes through the auroral regions in its low polar Earth orbit was investigated. The environment consists of a low temperature dense plasma and a relatively intense (200 mu A/sq m) field aligned flux of energetic electrons (approximately 5 to 10 keV). The potential on a sphere in eclipse is presented as a function of the ratio kappa of the charging rate produced by precipitating electrons to the discharging rate produced by ram ions. It was found that a 5 meter conducting sphere charges to potentials of order 1 kilovolt for kappa approximately 2, even though a 0.5 meter sphere charges to less than 100 volts. It is concluded that the natural charging environment can induce large potentials (approximately 1 kilovolt) on the shuttle orbiter.

Mapping the nonequilibrium order parameter of a quasi-two dimensional charge density wave system

The driving force of a charge density wave (CDW) transition in quasi-two dimensional systems is still debated, while being crucial in understanding electronic correlation in such materials. Here we use femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with computational methods to investigate the coherent lattice dynamics of a prototypical CDW system. The photo-induced temporal evolution of the periodic lattice distortion associated with the amplitude mode reveals the dynamics of the free energy functional governing the order parameter. Our approach establishes that optically-induced screening rather than CDW melting at the electronic level leads to a transiently modified potential which explains the anharmonic behaviour of the amplitude mode and discloses the structural origin of the symmetry-breaking phase transition.

Ion density waves driving the formation of filamentary dust structures

The PlasmaKristall-4 (PK-4) experiment on the International Space Station allows for the study of the 3-dimensional interaction between plasma and dust particles. Previous simulations of the PK-4 environment have discovered fast moving ionization waves in the dc discharge. These ionization waves vary the plasma parameters by up to an order of magnitude, which may affect the mechanisms responsible for the self-organization of chains seen in the PK-4 experiment. Here, we adapt a molecular dynamics simulation to employ temporally varying plasma conditions in order to investigate the effect on the dust charging and electrostatic potential. In order to describe the differences between the average of the plasma conditions and the time-varying plasma condition, we present a model to reproduce the interaction that takes into account the negative potential from the dust grain and the positive potential from the ion wake.

A quantitative model of charge injection by ruthenium chromophores connecting femtosecond to continuous irradiance conditions

A kinetic framework for the ultrafast photophysics of tris(2,2-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) phosphonated and methyl-phosphonated derivatives is used as a basis for modeling charge injection by ruthenium dyes into a semiconductor substrate. By including the effects of light scattering, dye diffusion, and adsorption kinetics during sample preparation and the optical response of oxidized dyes, quantitative agreement with multiple transient absorption datasets is achieved on timescales spanning femtoseconds to nanoseconds. In particular, quantitative agreement with important spectroscopic handles—the decay of an excited state absorption signal component associated with charge injection in the UV region of the spectrum and the dynamical redshift of a ~500 nm isosbestic point—validates our kinetic model. Pseudo-first-order rate coefficients for charge injection are estimated in this work, with an order of magnitude ranging from 10 11 to 10 12 s –1 . The model makes the minimalist assumption that all excited states of a particular dye have the same charge injection coefficient, an assumption that would benefit from additional theoretical and experimental exploration. Here, we have adapted this kinetic model to predict charge injection under continuous solar irradiation and find that as many as 68 electron transfer events per dye per second take place, significantly more than prior estimates in the literature.

I-V-T analysis of radiation damage in high efficiency Si solar cells

A detailed analysis of current-voltage characteristics of N(+)-P/P solar cells indicate that there is a combination of different mechanisms which results in an enhancement in the dark current and in turn deteriorates the photovoltaic performance of the solar cells after 1 MeV e(-) irradiation. The increase in the dark current is due to three effects, i.e., bulk recombination, space charge recombination by deep traps and space charge recombination through shallow traps. It is shown that the increase in bulk recombination current is about 2 to 3 orders of magnitude whereas space charge recombination current due to shallow traps increases only by an order or so and no space charge recombination through deep traps was observed after irradiation. Thus, in order to improve the radiation hardness of these devices, bulk properties should be preserved.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling for Charge-Density-Wave Formation in La 1.8-$x$ Eu 0.2 Sr $x$ CuO 4+$δ$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La 1.8-x Eu 0.2 Sr x CuO 4+δ . In this work, we investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW ordering vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW ordering vector of M ≃ 0.36 eV , which decreases to M ≃ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Proof of the universal density of charged states in QFT

We prove a recent conjecture by Harlow and Ooguri concerning a universal formula for the charged density of states in QFT at high energies for global symmetries associated with finite groups. An equivalent statement, based on the entropic order parameter associated with charged operators in the thermofield double state, was proven in a previous article by Casini, Huerta, Pontello, and the present author. Here we describe how the statement about the entropic order parameter arises, and how it gets transformed into the universal density of states. The use of the certainty principle, relating the entropic order and disorder parameters, is crucial for the proof. We remark that although the immediate application of this result concerns charged states, the origin and physics of such density can be understood by looking at the vacuum sector only. We also describe how these arguments lie at the origin of the so-called entropy equipartition in these type of systems, and how they generalize to QFT’s on non-compact manifolds.

Charge density wave and superconductivity in the disordered Holstein model

The interplay between electron-electron correlations and disorder has been a central theme of condensed matter physics over the past several decades, with particular interest in the possibility that interactions might cause delocalization of an Anderson insulator into a metallic state, and the disrupting effects of randomness on magnetic order and the Mott phase. In this work, we extend this physics to explore electron-phonon interactions and show, via exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations, that the suppression of the charge density wave correlations in the half-filled Holstein model by disorder can stabilize a superconducting phase. Our simulations thus capture qualitatively the suppression of charge ordered phases and emergent superconductivity recently seen experimentally.

Measurements of higher-order cumulants of multiplicity and net-electric charge distributions in inelastic proton-proton interactions by NA61/SHINE

This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 \(\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c\). Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. The measured signals are compared with the string hadronic models Epos1.99 and FTFP-BERT.

First Order Transport of a Cold Uniform Ellipsoid of Charge

A single particle has a 6-element phase space vector $s = (x, γv)$ where $γv =\frac{p}{m}$ s proportional to the relativistic momentum. The ellipsoid is represented by a 21-element vector $(s, C, V)$ where $s$ is the phase space location of the centroid. $C$ is the 3 × 3 covariance matrix defined by $C_{ij} = ⟨δx_iδx_j⟩$, where $δx$ is the distance of a particle from the centroid $x$. $C$ is symmetric so only counts as 6 elements of the overall vector. $V$ is a general 3 × 3 matrix that determines the velocity distribution in the bunch by $δ(γv) = Vδx$. In total this makes 6 + 6 + 9 = 21 elements.

Frustrated charge density wave and quasi-long-range bond-orientational order in the magnetic kagome FeGe

The intrinsic frustrated nature of a kagome lattice is amenable to the realization of exotic phases of matter, such as quantum spin liquids or spin ices, and the multiple-q charge density waves (CDW) in the kagome metals. Despite intense efforts to understand the mechanism driving the electronic modulations, its origin is still unknown and obscured by competing interactions and intertwined orders. Here, we identify a dimerization-driven 2D hexagonal charge-diffuse precursor in the antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeGe and demonstrate that the fraction of dimerized/undimerized states is the relevant order parameter of the multiple-q CDW of a continuous phase transition. The pretransitional charge fluctuations with propagation vector q = q M at T CDW < T < T*(125 K) are anisotropic, hence holding a quasi-long-range bond-orientational order. The broken translational symmetry emerges from the anisotropic diffuse precursor, akin to the Ising scenario of antiferromagnetic triangular lattices. The temperature and momentum dependence of the critical scattering show parallels to the stacked hexatic B-phases reported in liquid crystals and transient states of CDWs and highlight the key role of the topological defect-mediated melting of the CDW in FeGe.

Conservative scattering of Reissner-Nordström black holes at third post-Minkowskian order

Using a recently developed effective field theory formalism for extreme mass ratios arXiv:2308.14832, we present a calculation of charged black hole scattering at third post-Minkowskian order. The charges and masses are kept arbitrary, and the result interpolates from the scattering of Schwarzschild to extremal charged black holes, and beyond to charged particles in electrodynamics — agreeing with previously reported results in all such limits. The computation of the radial action is neatly organized in powers of the mass ratio. The probe (0SF) contributions are readily computed by direct integration of the radial momentum, and we use the effective field theory to compute the subleading (1SF) contributions via background-field Feynman rules supplemented by an operator encoding recoil of the background. Together these contributions completely determine the conservative physics at order O (G 3 ). .
