Reflectance characteristics of the Viking lander camera reference test charts

Reference test charts provide radiometric, colorimetric, and spatial resolution references for the Viking lander cameras on Mars. Reflectance measurements of these references are described, including the absolute bidirectional reflectance of the radiometric references and the relative spectral reflectance of both radiometric and colorimetric references. Results show that the bidirection reflectance of the radiometric references is Lambertian to within + or - 7% for incidence angles between 20 deg and 60 deg, and that their spectral reflectance is constant with wavelength to within + or - 5% over the spectral range of the cameras. Estimated accuracy of the measurements is + or - 0.05 in relative spectral reflectance.

Angular distributions of electrons of energy E sub e greater than 0.06 MeV in the Jovian magnetosphere

The results of an angular distribution analysis of the electron intensity data recorded near Jupiter for the period from 26 November to 14 December 1973 are presented. The data were from three directional particle detectors with effective integral electron energy thresholds of 0.06, 0.55, and 5.0 Mev, respectively. It was found that the central core of the magnetosphere, within 12 Jupiter radii, is dominated by pitch angle distributions strongly peaked at alpha = 90 deg, while the region from 12 to 25 Jupiter radii shows bidirectional and approximately equal maxima at alpha = 0 and 180 deg. Bidirectional angular distributions in the magnetodisc out to the radius of the magnetopause strongly suggest quasi-trapping on closed field lines as the predominant situation. Substantial field aligned, unidirectional streaming was detected on only two occasions. No distinctive effects on angular distributions were discerned near the L-shells of satellites.

A seasonal verification of the Suits spectral reflectance model for wheat

Variables that characterize wheat canopies for the Suits Model and spectral bidirectional reflectance measurements in the 450 to 1350 nm interval were determined approximately weekly throughout the growing season for two cultivars of wheat that achieved maximum leaf area index of 5.3 and 10.8. The Suits Model plant variables were tabulated and experimental reflectance measurements were compared with the model predictions in the wavelength interval from 500 to 1150 nm at 50 nm increments for 17 measurement dates. The seasonal average coefficient of determination, r squared, was 0.88 between the Suits spectral bidirectional reflectance model and field-measured reflectance data. Poorest agreement was found very early and very late in the growing season, possibly due to low green plant biomass and incomplete ground cover.

Characteristic variations in reflectance of surface soils

Surface soil samples from a wide range of naturally occurring soils were obtained for the purpose of studying the characteristic variations in soil reflectance as these variations relate to other soil properties and soil classification. A total 485 soil samples from the U.S. and Brazil representing 30 suborders of the 10 orders of 'Soil Taxonomy' was examined. The spectral bidirectional reflectance factor was measured on uniformly moist soils over the 0.52 to 2.32 micron wavelength range with a spectroradiometer adapted for indoor use. Five distinct soil spectral reflectance curve forms were identified according to curve shape, the presence or absence of absorption bands, and the predominance of soil organic matter and iron oxide composition. These curve forms were further characterized according to generically homogeneous soil properties in a manner similar to the subdivisions at the suborder level of 'Soil Taxonomy'. Results indicate that spectroradiometric measurements of soil spectral bidirectional reflectance factor can be used to characterize soil reflectance in terms that are meaningful to soil classification, genesis, and survey.

Massively parallel processor computer

An apparatus for processing multidimensional data with strong spatial characteristics, such as raw image data, characterized by a large number of parallel data streams in an ordered array is described. It comprises a large number (e.g., 16,384 in a 128 x 128 array) of parallel processing elements operating simultaneously and independently on single bit slices of a corresponding array of incoming data streams under control of a single set of instructions. Each of the processing elements comprises a bidirectional data bus in communication with a register for storing single bit slices together with a random access memory unit and associated circuitry, including a binary counter/shift register device, for performing logical and arithmetical computations on the bit slices, and an I/O unit for interfacing the bidirectional data bus with the data stream source. The massively parallel processor architecture enables very high speed processing of large amounts of ordered parallel data, including spatial translation by shifting or sliding of bits vertically or horizontally to neighboring processing elements.

Low-energy (less than 100 eV) ion pitch angle distributions in the magnetosphere by ISEE 1

Attention is given to isotropic distribution, bidirectional field alignment distribution, unidirectional field alignment distribution, and low flux, in a statistical examination of low energy ion data from the ISEE 1 plasma composition experiment whose aim was the study of pitch angle distributions in all local times of the magnetosphere. The isotropic distribution consisting of less than 10 eV ions is a persistent inner region feature, while the bidirectional field-aligned distribution consisting of warm ions is a persistent feature of the outer dayside and is seen just outside the isotropic distribution region of the nightside. On the outer nightside, the unidirectional field-aligned distribution consisting of warm ions is the dominant signature. The 'sources' of ions in various regions are discussed in view of the present and other results.

Correlated particle and magnetic field observations of a large-scale magnetic loop structure behind an interplanetary shock

From a survey of observations on ISEE-3, an example of correlated particle and magnetic field observations of a large-scale magnetic loop structure is presented. Bidirectional proton fluxes were observed for a period of 40 hours in the energy range 35-1600 keV approximately 12 hours after the passage of the interplanetary shock of December 11, 1980, and directly after the passage of a discontinuity. For each of the eight logarithmically spaced energy channels, a three-dimensional anisotropy analysis reveals streaming along both directions of the magnetic field. The magnetic field rotated slowly but steadily through approximately 180 deg during this same 40-hour period; this is consistent with the existence of a large-scale loop with extent greater than 0.5 AU. The observations suggest that the particles are being injected into the loop sunward of the spacecraft; they appear as bidirectional fluxes in the outermost regions of the loop arising from a combination of focusing and near scatter-free transport.

Atmospheric transfer of radiation above an inhomogeneous non-Lambertian reflective ground. I - Theory

A method for solving the three-dimensional equation of transfer for a vertically inhomogeneous atmosphere bounded by a reflecting surface of non-uniform bidirectional reflectance is presented. The technique incorporates a two-dimensional spatial Fourier transform of the transfer equation and solution of the resulting expressions for each Fourier component of the radiation field using the method of Gauss-Seidel iteration. The intensity field in the spatial domain, which is calculated for a variety of altitudes, zenith angles, and azimuths, is reconstructed using the inverse Fourier transform. An empirical surface bidirectional reflectance function is employed, permitting the consideration of non-Lambertian reflective properties.

Radiometric analyses of Landsat-4 digital image data

The results of analyses of the radiometric characteristics of digital image data produced by the Landsat 4 MSS and TM sensors are reviewed. The MSS analysis found high quality data comparable to the products of previous Landsats, except for a low-level coherent noise effect having a magnitude of about 0.5 counts in each band and a spatial period of about 3.6 pixels. The TM analysis found excellent spatial resolution, generally high data quality and expected scan-angle effects. Procedures for equalizing detector responses appear to be working as intended. Two low-amplitude artifacts also were discovered. The first is associated with the direction of scan (TM employs bidirectional scanning). The second, a very low employs bidirectional scanning). The second, a very low frequency level-shift artifact which produces image banding that is most pronounced in TM1, could be a serious problem for water-related applications or others where average signal levels are low. Correction procedures are under investigation.

Solar radiance models for determination of ERBE scanner filter factor

Shortwave spectral radiance models for use in the spectral correction algorithms for the ERBE Scanner Instrument are provided. The required data base was delivered to the ERBe Data Reduction Group in October 1984. It consisted of two sets of data files: (1) the spectral bidirectional angular models and (2) the spectral flux modes. The bidirectional models employ the angular characteristics of reflection by the Earth-atmosphere system and were derived from detailed radiance calculations using a finite difference model of the radiative transfer process. The spectral flux models were created through the use of a delta-Eddington model to economically simulate the effects of atmospheric variability. By combining these data sets, a wide range of radiances may be approximated for a number of scene types.

Accuracy of earth albedo estimates from wide-angle radiation measurements

The instantaneous resolution and accuracy that can be expected from two inversion techniques to be used in the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE) are examined. It is shown that measurement errors are magnified by the numerical filter and that this magnification is a function of the magnitude of the inversion factor. By using singular value decomposition, these magnitudes can be reduced to improve the estimates. A simulation of the estimation process using an albedo field derived from scanning radiometer data shows that retaining 6 of the 13 singular values gives the best results. If there are no bidirectional model errors the medium-field-of-view data give the best estimates. However, when bidirectional model errors are considered, the wide-field-of-view measurements give better estimates since they are less sensitive to these errors.

A Monte Carlo reflectance model for soil surfaces with three-dimensional structure

A Monte Carlo soil reflectance model has been developed to study the effect of macroscopic surface irregularities larger than the wavelength of incident flux. The model treats incoherent multiple scattering from Lambertian facets distributed on a periodic surface. Resulting bidirectional reflectance distribution functions are non-Lambertian and compare well with experimental trends reported in the literature. Examples showing the coupling of the Monte Carlo soil model to an adding bidirectional canopy of reflectance model are also given.

The Characterization of Surface Variegation Effects on Remote Sensing

Improvements in remote sensing capabilities hinge very directly upon attaining an understanding of the physical processes contributing to the measurements. In order to devise new measurement strategies and to learn better techniques for processing remotely gathered data, it is necessary to understand and to characterize the complex radiative interactions of the atmosphere-surface system. In particular, it is important to understand the role of atmospheric structure, ground reflectance inhomogeneity and ground bidirectional reflectance type. The goals, then, are to model, analyze, and parameterize the observable effects of three dimensional atmospheric structure and composition and two dimensional variations in ground albedo and bidirectional reflectance. To achieve these goals, a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code is employed to model and analyze the effects of many of the complications which are present in nature.

Apparatus for production of ultrapure amorphous metals utilizing acoustic cooling

Amorphous metals are produced by forming a molten unit of metal and deploying the unit into a bidirectional acoustical levitating field or by dropping the unit through a spheroidizing zone, a slow quenching zone, and a fast quenching zone in which the sphere is rapidly cooled by a bidirectional jet stream created in the standing acoustic wave field produced between a half cylindrical acoustic driver and a focal reflector or a curved driver and a reflector. The cooling rate can be further augmented first by a cryogenic liquid collar and secondly by a cryogenic liquid jacket surrounding a drop tower. The molten unit is quenched to an amorphous solid which can survive impact in a unit collector or is retrieved by a vacuum chuck.

Reflection and emission models for deserts derived from Nimbus-7 ERB scanner measurements

Broadband shortwave and longwave radiance measurements obtained from the Nimbus-7 Earth Radiation Budget scanner were used to develop reflectance and emittance models for the Sahara-Arabian, Gibson, and Saudi Deserts. The models were established by fitting the satellite measurements to analytic functions. For the shortwave, the model function is based on an approximate solution to the radiative transfer equation. The bidirectional-reflectance function was obtained from a single-scattering approximation with a Rayleigh-like phase function. The directional-reflectance model followed from integration of the bidirectional model and is a function of the sum and product of cosine solar and viewing zenith angles, thus satisfying reciprocity between these angles. The emittance model was based on a simple power-law of cosine viewing zenith angle.
