An investigation of accelerating mode and decelerating mode constant-momentum mass spectrometry and their application to a residual gas analyzer

A theoretical analysis of constant momentum mass spectrometry was made. A maximum resolving power for the decelerating mode constant momentum mass spectrometer was shown theoretically to exist for a beam of ions of known energy. A vacuum system and an electron beam ionization source was constructed. Supporting electronics for a residual gas analyzer were built. Experimental investigations of various types of accelerating and decelerating impulsive modes of a constant momentum mass spectrometer as applied to a residual gas analyzer were made. The data indicate that the resolving power for the decelerating mode is comparable to that of the accelerating mode.

A Survey of Emerging Materials for Revolutionary Aerospace Vehicle Structures and Propulsion Systems

The NASA Strategic Plan identifies the long-term goal of providing safe and affordable space access, orbital transfer, and interplanetary transportation capabilities to enable scientific research, human, and robotic exploration, and the commercial development of space. Numerous scientific and engineering breakthroughs will be required to develop the technology required to achieve this goal. Critical technologies include advanced vehicle primary and secondary structure, radiation protection, propulsion and power systems, fuel storage, electronics and devices, sensors and science instruments, and medical diagnostics and treatment. Advanced materials with revolutionary new capabilities are an essential element of each of these technologies. A survey of emerging materials with applications to aerospace vehicle structures and propulsion systems was conducted to assist in long-term Agency mission planning. The comprehensive survey identified materials already under development that could be available in 5 to 10 years and those that are still in the early research phase and may not be available for another 20 to 30 years. The survey includes typical properties, a description of the material and processing methods, the current development status, and the critical issues that must be overcome to achieve commercial viability.

Carbon Nanotube-Based Digital Vacuum Electronics and Miniature Instrumentation for Space Exploration

JPL has developed high performance cold cathodes using arrays of carbon nanotube bundles that produce > 15 A/sq cm at applied fields of 5 to 8 V/micron without any beam focusing. They have exhibited robust operation in poor vacuums of 10(exp -6) to 10(exp -4) Torr- a typically achievable range inside hermetically sealed microcavities. Using these CNT cathodes JPL has developed miniature X-ray tubes capable of delivering sufficient photon flux at acceleration voltages of <20kV to perform definitive mineralogy on planetary surfaces; mass ionizers that offer two orders of magnitude power savings, and S/N ratio better by a factor of five over conventional ionizers. JPL has also developed a new class of programmable logic gates using CNT vacuum electronics potentially for Venus in situ missions and defense applications. These digital vacuum electronic devices are inherently high-temperature tolerant and radiation insensitive. Device design, fabrication and DC switching operation at temperatures up to 700 C are presented in this paper.

(abstract) Electronic Packaging for Microspacecraft Applications

The intent of this presentation is to give a brief look into the future of electronic packaging for microspacecraft applications. Advancements in electronic packaging technology areas have developed to the point where a system engineer's visions, concepts, and requirements for a microspacecraft can now be a reality. These new developments are ideal candidates for microspacecraft applications. These technologies are capable of bringing about major changes in how we design future spacecraft while taking advantage of the benefits due to size, weight, power, performance, reliability , and cost. This presentation will also cover some advantages and limitations of surface mount technology (SMT), multichip modules (MCM), and wafer scale integration (WSI), and what is needed to implement these technologies into microspacecraft.

Refocusing of the spent axisymmetric beam in klystron tubes

Analytic methods were developed and employed to optimize the magnetic field transition region between the output interaction gap of a klystron and a multi-stage depressed potential electrostatic beam collector, in order to enhance the power conversion efficiency of satellite-borne broadcast transmitters. Permanent magnet structures were designed to provide the magnetic field distributions required to expand and recollimate the spent electron beam of the power amplifier klystron for proper entry into the beam collector. These design criteria for magnetic field distributions for expanding and recollimating spent-beam electrons for optimal entry into a multi-stage depressed potential collector are generally applicable to traveling-wave tubes as well as klystrons.

Examination of UC-ZrC after long term irradiation at thermionic temperature

Two fluoride tungsten clad UC-ZrC fueled capsules, designated as V-2C and V-2D, were examined a hot cell after irradiation in NASA Plum Brook Reactor at a maximum cladding temperature of 1930 K for 11,089 and 12,031 hours to burnups of 3.0 x 10 to the 20th power and 2.1 x 10 to the 20th power fission/c.c. respectively. Percentage of fission gas release from the fuel material was measured by radiochemical means. Cladding deformation, fuel-cladding interaction and microstructures of fuel, cladding, and fuel-cladding interface were studied metallographically. Compositions of dispersions in fuel, fuel matrix and fuel-cladding interaction layer were analyzed by electron microprobe techniques. Axial and radial distributions of burnup were determined by gamma-scan, autoradiography and isotopic burnup analysis. The results are presented and discussed in conjunction with the requirements of thermionic fuel elements for space power application.

An interpretation of Jupiter's decametric radiation and the terrestrial kilometric radiation as direct amplified gyroemission

Direct amplified gyroemission due to an anisotropic distribution of suprathermal electrons is proposed as the most plausible emission mechanism for Jupiter's decametric radiation (DAM) and the terrestrial auroral kilometric radiation (AKR). It is suggested that the required electron distribution could be produced by electrons, initially with small pitch angles, precipitating from the magnetosphere. A quasi-linear treatment of the proposed mechanism is outlined, including satisfaction of the Doppler condition, calculation of the growth rate, conditions for quasi-linear relaxation, and generation of the anisotropy. The mechanism is applied to the Jovian DAM, emphasizing the growth rate, the power radiated, and the elliptical polarization of the radiation. It is found that the theory can account for the gross features of the DAM, provided the number density in the precipitating electron streams exceeds 20 per cu cm. Application of the theory to the AKR shows that the requirements concerning the properties of the precipitating electrons appear to be satisfied by the observed properties of those inverted V events which correlate with the emission of AKR.

An air bearing fan for EVA suit ventilation

The portable life-support system (PLSS) ventilation requirements are outlined, along with the application of a high-speed axial fan technology for extravehicular-activity (EVA) space-suit ventilation. Focus is placed on a mechanical design employing high-speed gas bearings, permanent magnet rotor, and current-fed chopper/inverter electronics. The operational characteristics of the fan unit and its applicability for use in a pure-oxygen environment are discussed. It delivers a nominal 0.17 cu m/min at 1.24 kPa pressure rise using 13.8 w of input power. It is shown that the overall selection of materials for all major component meets the NASA requirements.

Fabrication Of High-Tc Superconducting Integrated Circuits

Microwave ring resonator fabricated to demonstrate process for fabrication of passive integrated circuits containing high-transition-temperature superconductors. Superconductors increase efficiencies of communication systems, particularly microwave communication systems, by reducing ohmic losses and dispersion of signals. Used to reduce sizes and masses and increase aiming accuracies and tracking speeds of millimeter-wavelength, electronically steerable antennas. High-Tc superconductors preferable for such applications because they operate at higher temperatures than low-Tc superconductors do, therefore, refrigeration systems needed to maintain superconductivity designed smaller and lighter and to consume less power.

Computer simulation of a resonant dc link for advanced launch systems

The performance of a resonant dc link based actuator power system being built for an advanced launch system application is evaluated for a typical launch scenario using two end-to-end system simulations, one using a digital computer and the other using a hybrid computer. Aspects of system performance from the switching of the power electronic devices to the vehicle aerodynamics are addressed. Using these simulations, it is shown that the resonance dc link actuator adequately stabilize the vehicle against a wind gust during a launch.
