Origin of Intrinsically Low Thermal Conductivity in a Garnet-Type Solid Electrolyte: Linking Lattice and Ionic Dynamics with Thermal Transport

Understanding thermal transport in solid electrolytes is essential for improving the performance, reliability, and safety of all-solid-state batteries. Garnet-type lithium-ion conductors are promising candidates for solid electrolytes, yet their thermal-transport mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we connect the lattice and ion dynamics of single-crystal garnet-type Li 6.5 La 3 Zr 1.5 Ta 0.5 O 12 to its intrinsically low thermal conductivity. Our study reveals that the single crystals grown by the floating-zone method exhibit remarkably low glasslike thermal conductivity. Using first-principles calculations and inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements, we identify both the acoustic and numerous optical phonon modes, which stem from the complex crystal structure of the material. Notably, a low-energy optical branch exhibits an avoided crossing with acoustic phonons near 7 meV. These optical modes can enhance the scattering of heat-carrying acoustic phonons and reduce thermal conductivity. Furthermore, the calculated Grüneisen parameters are large, especially for the vibrational modes around 6 meV, indicating strong anharmonicity, with a noticeable contribution from lithium-ion vibrations. A two-channel thermal-transport model is employed to describe the weak temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity, which can be attributed to the substantial contribution of diffuson transport facilitated by the abundance of optical phonons and intrinsic anharmonicity. These results offer valuable insights into the thermal transport in a broad class of ionic conductors of interest for energy conversion and storage applications.

DESI 2024: reconstructing dark energy using crossing statistics with DESI DR1 BAO data

Here, we implement Crossing Statistics to reconstruct in a model-agnostic manner the expansion history of the universe and properties of dark energy, using DESI Data Release 1 (DR1) BAO data in combination with one of three different supernova compilations (PantheonPlus, Union3, and DES-SN5YR) and Planck CMB observations. Our results hint towards an evolving and emergent dark energy behaviour, with negligible presence of dark energy at z ≳ 1, at varying significance depending on data sets combined. In all these reconstructions, the cosmological constant lies outside the 95% confidence intervals for some redshift ranges. This dark energy behaviour, reconstructed using Crossing Statistics, is in agreement with results from the conventional w 0 –w a dark energy equation of state parametrization reported in the DESI Key cosmology paper. Our results add an extensive class of model-agnostic reconstructions with acceptable fits to the data, including models where cosmic acceleration slows down at low redshifts. We also report constraints on H 0 r d from our model-agnostic analysis, independent of the pre-recombination physics.

Coupled order parameters and photoinduced domain walls in the charge density wave of (TaSe 4 ) 2 I

The charge density wave in (TaSe 4 ) 2 I has drawn much attention recently as a controversial candidate for an axion insulator where the CDW breaks the chiral symmetry of the Weyl semimetal. Here we use ultrafast x-ray scattering to study the collective modes of this CDW. By measuring several diffraction peaks we find that the order parameter involves coupled optical and acoustic modes. For strong near-infrared excitation, the dynamics of the x-ray diffraction show evidence of photoinduced inversion of both components of the CDW order parameter, and associated domain walls. These results demonstrate the potential of ultrafast methods to induce topological defects through highly nonequilibrium dynamics. In (TaSe 4 ) 2 I these defects should lead to exotic electronic states due to the nontrivial topology of the band structure.
