Sierra/SD - Theory Manual - 5.8

Sierra/SD provides a massively parallel implementation of structural dynamics finite element analysis, required for high fidelity, validated models used in modal, vibration, static and shock analysis of structural systems. This manual describes the theory behind many of the constructs in Sierra/SD. For a more detailed description of how to use Sierra/SD, we refer the reader to User's Manual. Many of the constructs in Sierra/SD are pulled directly from published material. Where possible, these materials are referenced herein. However, certain functions in Sierra/SD are specific to our implementation. We try to be far more complete in those areas. The theory manual was developed from several sources including general notes, a programmer_notes manual, the user's notes and of course the material in the open literature. This page intentionally left blank.

Sierra/SD - Verification Test Manual - 5.8

This document presents tests from the Sierra Structural Mechanics verification test suite. Each of these tests is run nightly with the Sierra/SD code suite and the results of the test checked versus the correct analytic result. For each of the tests presented in this document the test setup, derivation of the analytic solution, and comparison of the Sierra/SD code results to the analytic solution is provided. This document can be used to confirm that a given code capability is verified or referenced as a compilation of example problems.

Sierra/SD - How To Manual - 5.8

The How To Manual supplements the User’s Manual and the Theory Manual. The goal of the How To Manual is to reduce learning time for complex end to end analyses. These documents are intended to be used together. See the User’s Manual for a complete list of the options for a solution case. All the examples are part of the Sierra/SD test suite. Each runs as is. The organization is similar to the other documents: How to run, Commands, Solution cases, Materials, Elements, Boundary conditions, and then Contact. The table of contents and index are indispensable. The Geometric Rigid Body Modes section is shared with the Users Manual.

Plasmonics-Enhanced Optical Imaging Systems for Bioenergy Research

This final report summarizes the key accomplishments of the project entitled “Plasmonics-Enhanced Optical Imaging Systems for Bioenergy Research”. The goal of this project is aimed at developing innovative and improved imaging instrumentation for visualization and quantitative characterization of biomarkers related to molecular processes and cellular function in living plants. This project focused on three specific aims: 1) Development of Advanced Multimodal Optical Sensing And Imaging Combinatory (MOSAIC) System for SERS biosensing and bioimaging. 2) Evaluation of MOSAIC technologies for sensing and imaging gene expression in plant systems using plasmonic nanoprobes. 3) Application of MOSAIC techniques to bioenergy research.

FRAM Isotopic Analysis of High-Resolution CZT Data

H3D Inc. has introduced a new type of CZT detectors that has resolution several times better than that of a typical, single crystal CZT detector. The better resolution has made it easier for software codes to analyze its spectra for isotopic composition of nuclear materials. The Fixed-energy Response-function Analysis with multiple efficiency (FRAM) is one of such software codes. The good peak resolution of the H3D CZT detectors allows the current FRAM v.6.1 and earlier to successfully analyze uranium spectra with minimal modification of the parameter sets and get reasonable results. (A parameter set governs how an analysis is performed.) The exceptionally large high-energy tail of the peaks makes it difficult to achieve good uranium results and impossible to successfully analyze plutonium spectra. The FRAM code needed to be modified to better fit the high-energy tail of the peaks in order to analyze plutonium data and to get better uranium analysis results. Results of this modification, encoded in beta version FRAM v.7.0i, are reported herein.

Bioimaging Science Program Principal Investigator Meetings Proceedings (2021)

As part of the 2021 Biological Systems Science Division (BSSD) Principal Investigator (PI) Meeting, the Bioimaging Science program (BSP), within BSSD's Biomolecular Characterization and Imaging Science portfolio, held its annual PI meeting virtually February 22–23. BSP's mission is to understand the translation of genomic information into the mechanisms that power living cells, communities of cells, and whole organisms. The goal of BSP is to develop new imaging and measurement technologies to visualize the spatial and temporal relationships of key metabolic processes governing phenotypic expression in plants and microbes. BSP convenes annual PI meetings to bring together its contributing investigators to review progress and current state-of-the-art bioimaging research. Holding the BSP meeting as part of the broader BSSD PI meeting allowed researchers to interact with the extended Genomic Science program community. This convergence provided a platform for networking and exchange of ideas, helping to forge new multidisciplinary collaborations among investigators from the two sister programs. An important highlight of the BSP meeting was the keynote presentation “Enhancing Fluorescence Microscopy with Computation” by Dr. Hari Shroff of the NIH National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. All the BSP PIs made presentations describing their research focus and progress, and these were followed by roundtable discussions of each project. The meeting’s proceedings provide an outline of the program’s current state and potential future directions and opportunities.

Isotopic Analysis using FRAM [Slides]

FRAM is an isotopic analysis code nominally designed for plutonium and uranium. It stands for Fixed-energy Response-function Analysis with Multiple efficiencies. It has self-calibration using several gamma-ray peaks and can analyze gamma ray data from 30keV to >1MeV of HPGe, CdTe, or LaBr3 detector. The key difference between the MGA family of codes (from LLNL) and FRAM is the use of user-editable analysis parameters in the latter.

Sierra/SD - Its2Sierra - User's Manual - 5.20

The Integrated Tiger Series (ITS) generates a database containing energy deposition data. This data, when stored on an Exodus file, is not typically suitable for analysis within SierraMechanics for finite element analysis. The its2sierra tool maps data from the ITS database to the Sierra database. This document provides information on the usage of its2sierra.

Sierra/SD – User’s Guide for NasGen (V.5.16)

NasGen provides a path for migration of structural models from Nastran bulk data format (BDF) into both an Exodus mesh file and an ASCII input file for Sierra Structural Dynamics (Salinas) and Solid Mechanics (Adagio). Many tools at Sandia National Labs (SNL) use the Exodus format. This document describes capabilities and limitations of the NasGen translation software.
