A computer version of the US Standard Atmosphere, 1978

A computer version of the U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1976, was developed. The computer program was developed in modular form for easy incorporation into the user's program and for easy modification for specialized uses.

Preliminary results of the US-USSR meteorological rocketsonde intercomparison held at Wallops Island, VA - August 1977

The reported intercomparison tests were conducted in connection with the objective to make U.S. and USSR rocketsonde temperature data, obtained in studies of the stratosphere and lower mesosphere, compatible with each other. The tests were successful. In general, temperature and wind profiles from the M100B and Datasonde instruments exhibited many similarities up to the vicinity of the stratopause. Mean temperature differences for the day and night pairs are less than 5 C up to 50 km. The differences progressively increase to about 14-15 C at 70 km, with the M100B temperatures colder than the Datasonde data. The reasonably close similarity between the day and night temperature differences suggests that consistent radiation corrections are being applied to both systems. The agreement of the wind measurements below 58 km is a significant improvement compared to the 1973 comparisons when agreement only extended up to 45 km.

US experiments flown on the Soviet satellite COSMOS 936

Results of spaceborne experiments onboard the Cosmos 936 satellite are reported. Alterations in normal bone chemistry, muscle structure, and general physiology resulting from spaceflight are covered along with measurements of cosmic radiation and its potential hazard to man during prolonged spaceflights. Postflight activities involving the seven U.S. experiments are emphasized.

A cross impact methodology for the assessment of US telecommunications system with application to fiber optics development: Executive summary

A cross impact model of the U.S. telecommunications system was developed. For this model, it was necessary to prepare forecasts of the major segments of the telecommunications system, such as satellites, telephone, TV, CATV, radio broadcasting, etc. In addition, forecasts were prepared of the traffic generated by a variety of new or expanded services, such as electronic check clearing and point of sale electronic funds transfer. Finally, the interactions among the forecasts were estimated (the cross impacts). Both the forecasts and the cross impacts were used as inputs to the cross impact model, which could then be used to stimulate the future growth of the entire U.S. telecommunications system. By varying the inputs, technology changes or policy decisions with regard to any segment of the system could be evaluated in the context of the remainder of the system. To illustrate the operation of the model, a specific study was made of the deployment of fiber optics, throughout the telecommunications system.

Analysis of the classification of US and Canadian intensive test sites using the Image 100 hybrid classification system

The author has identified the following significant results. Labeling of wheat rather than total grains, particularly with only one acquisition, led to significant overestimates in some segments. The Image-100 software and procedures were written to facilitate classification of the LACIE segments but were not designed to record data for later accuracy assessment. A much better evaluation would have been possible if accuracy assessment data had been collected following each satisfactory classification.

What can earth tide measurements tell us about ocean tides or earth structure?

Current experimental problems in Earth tides are reviewed using comparisons of tidal gravity and tilt measurements in Europe with loading calculations are examples. The limitations of present day instrumentation and installation techniques are shown as well as some of the ways in which they can be improved. Many of the geophysical and oceanographic investigations that are possible with Earth tide measurements are discussed with emphasis on the percentage accuracies required in the measurements in order to obtain new information about Earth or its oceans.

US Navy lithium cell applications

Applications of lithium systems that are already in the fleet are discussed. The approach that the Navy is taking in the control of the introduction of lithium batteries into the fleet is also discussed.

US Army lithium cell applications

The how, why and where the Army is applying lithium batteries are addressed. The Army is committing its efforts to the utilization of lithium batteries in new equipment that will be going into the field possibly from FY-80 and thereafter. The Army's philosophy is to guide their users and the equipment designers, to use battery packs are opposed to singel cells. After a detailed description of the battery types that are being considered, a discussion is presented in which questions and comments are exchanged among the Workshop participants.

BIOSPEX: Biological space experiments, a compendium of life sciences experiments carried on US spacecraft

United States space life science experiments, encompassing 27 years of experience beginning with sounding rocket flights carrying primates (1948) to the last U.S. spaceflight, the joint US/USSR Apollo Test Project (1975), are presented. The information for each experiment includes Principal Investigators, the program and mission on which it was flown, the specimens used, the objectives, protocol, equipment, results, conclusions, and bibliographic reference citations for publications derived from each experiment.
