Thermo-Fluid Modeling Framework for Supercomputer Digital Twins: Part 1, Demonstration at Exascale

A thermo-fluid modeling framework is being developed for ExaDigiT---an open-source framework for developing comprehensive digital twins of liquid-cooled supercomputers. The work is being conducted in two parts, and discussion is divided into two companion papers. The work documented in this paper focuses on the development of a cooling system library in Dymola for the Frontier supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The second part, outlined in a companion paper, focuses on a templating structure called Auto-CSM for easily creating model-agnostic, physics-based thermo-fluid cooling system models for liquid-cooled supercomputers using a text-based schema. The cooling model is being developed using primarily the open-source Transient Simulation Framework of Reconfigurable Models (TRANSFORM) library. The library follows the templating architecture developed within the TRANSFORM library for modeling subsystems. A full-system validation was performed to validate a very simple model that is integrated with the system controls, and the results are presented herein.

Tracking Steady Light Sources Amid Luminous Transients

The Transient Event Rejection for Acquisition and Tracking (TERAT) algorithm governs operation of image-data-acquisition and -processing system. TERAT processes digitized image data to acquire (that is, identify) candidate steady source of light, validate candidate source, and track validated source, all in presence of real or apparent luminous transients represented in image data. Source of light tracked could be star or distant luminous beacon. Transients caused by impacts of ionizing radiation on imaging array of photodetectors or by unsteady light sources not meant to be tracked. TERAT functions with limited data-processing resources. TERAT algorithm currently operational on NASA's TOPEX mission.

The transient X-ray source A0620-00 - Intensity variations and evidence for an 8 day periodicity

The X-ray intensity of the transient source A0620-00 has been measured frequently with the SAS-3 X-ray Observatory from August 8, 1975 to February 13, 1976. This brightest of all known X-ray transients shows intensity variations on a time scale of days superposed on a general decline. Intensity data for the period from January 7 to February 13, 1976, show evidence of an approximate 7.8-day periodicity that may be the result of binary motion.

Observations of the transient X-ray source 4U0115+63

Results of HEAO-2 pointed observations and Ariel 5 All Sky Monitor observations of the X-ray transient 4U0115+63 are presented. The transient source pulses with a period of 3.6136 s + or - .0004 s, has a hard spectrum typical of an X-ray binary pulsar, and has a broad iron line emission feature. A discussion of the transient behavior is given and inferences are made concerning the nature of the X-ray source based on the pointed data.

SN 2020bvc: A Broad-line Type Ic Supernova with a Double-peaked Optical Light Curve and a Luminous X-Ray and Radio Counterpart

Here, we present optical, radio, and X-ray observations of SN 2020bvc (=ASASSN20bs; ZTF20aalxlis), a nearby (z = 0.0252; d = 114 Mpc) broad-lined (BL) Type Ic supernova (SN) and the first double-peaked Ic-BL discovered without a gamma-ray burst (GRB) trigger. Our observations show that SN 2020bvc shares several properties in common with the Ic-BL SN 2006aj, which was associated with the low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) 060218. First, the 10 GHz radio luminosity (L radio ≈ 10 37 erg s -1 ) is brighter than ordinary core-collapse SNe but fainter than LLGRB-SNe such as SN 1998bw (associated with LLGRB 980425). We model our VLA observations (spanning 13–43 d) as synchrotron emission from a mildly relativistic (v ≳ 0.3c) forward shock. Second, with Swift and Chandra we detect X-ray emission (L X ≈ 10 41 erg s -1 ) that is not naturally explained as inverse Compton emission or as part of the same synchrotron spectrum as the radio emission. Third, high-cadence (6×/night -1 ) data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) shows a double-peaked optical light curve, the first peak from shock-cooling of extended low-mass material (mass M e < 10 -2 M ⊙ at radius R e > 10 12 cm) and the second peak from the radioactive decay of 56 Ni. SN 2020bvc is the first double-peaked Ic-BL SN discovered without a GRB trigger, so it is noteworthy that it shows X-ray and radio emission similar to LLGRB-SNe. For four of the five other nearby (z . 0.05) Ic-BL SNe with ZTF high-cadence data, we rule out a first peak like that seen in SN 2006aj and SN 2020bvc, i.e. that lasts ≈ 1 d and reaches a peak luminosity M ≈ -18. X-ray and radio follow-up observations of Ic-BL SNe with well-sampled early optical light curves will establish whether double-peaked optical light curves are indeed predictive of LLGRB-like X-ray and radio emission.

Further spectrophotometry of the transient X-ray source A0620-00

Observations of the transient X-ray source A0620-00 in November 1976 show that the optical object had an apparent visual magnitude of 18.35. The spectrum is cool and shows that one component of the light comes from a K5 V to K7 V star. The distance is estimated to be 870 pc if the cool star is normal. Some support for the 7.8-day X-ray period recently found is provided by observations made in 1975 during the outburst. In addition to the cool K star, there is a second radiation source which has a flat spectrum. This source can be modeled by a 10,000-K blackbody with a radius (if spherical) of 17,000 km plus a 4000-K blackbody with a radius of 13,400 km and is probably a residual accretion disk. It is very unlikely that the K star can fill its Roche lobe, so that mass transfer to a neutron-star companion by this mechanism is unlikely. It is possible that the K star is losing mass by processes such as those that occur in T Tauri stars.

On the distances to transient X-ray sources.

Estimation of the distance of three transient X-ray sources characterized by a rapid increase to a flux comparable with the strongest galactic X-ray sources, followed by a slower decay over a time scale of three to four months. A simple argument based only on X-ray data is presented, which yields a typical distance estimate on the order of a few kiloparsecs. In particular, it is demonstrated that it is most unlikely that the transient X-ray sources can be extragalactic in nature and produced by supernova events in nearby galaxies.

Search and identification of transient and variable radio sources using MeerKAT observations: a case study on the MAXI J1820+070 field

ABSTRACT Many transient and variable sources detected at multiple wavelengths are also observed to vary at radio frequencies. However, these samples are typically biased towards sources that are initially detected in wide-field optical, X-ray, or gamma-ray surveys. Many sources that are insufficiently bright at higher frequencies are therefore missed, leading to potential gaps in our knowledge of these sources and missing populations that are not detectable in optical, X-rays, or gamma-rays. Taking advantage of new state-of-the-art radio facilities that provide high-quality wide-field images with fast survey speeds, we can now conduct unbiased surveys for transient and variable sources at radio frequencies. In this paper, we present an unbiased survey using observations obtained by MeerKAT, a mid-frequency (∼GHz) radio array in South Africa’s Karoo Desert. The observations used were obtained as part of a weekly monitoring campaign for X-ray binaries (XRBs) and we focus on the field of MAXI J1820+070. We develop methods to efficiently filter transient and variable candidates that can be directly applied to other data sets. In addition to MAXI J1820+070, we identify four likely active galactic nuclei, one source that could be a Galactic source (pulsar or quiescent XRB) or an AGN, and one variable pulsar. No transient sources, defined as being undetected in deep images, were identified leading to a transient surface density of <3.7 × 10−2 deg−2 at a sensitivity of 1 mJy on time-scales of 1 week at 1.4 GHz.

Manifestations and possible sources of lunar transient phenomena /LTP/

An observing program designed to monitor sites of lunar transient phenomena (LTP) is discussed in the context of the distribution of LTP sites and possible sources of the events. It is noted that the distribution of LTP sites shows a strong preference for the edges of maria and a paucity in the north and south highlands, suggesting a relationship with dark smooth material known to be volcanic and implying internal activity at the sites. The observing program, which is aimed at those LTP described as brightenings, has been conducted to determine the normal brightness of each observed feature for all phases of a lunation and to establish a quantified 'seeing' scale. The procedure for establishing the albedo scale of a given feature is outlined, and some observations of the crater Dawes are analyzed as an example.

Spectrophotometry of the transient X-ray source A0620-00

Optical observations of the transient X-ray source A0620-00 over the wavelength range from about 3200 to 6600 A are analyzed which were made with the 5-m Hale telescope using a multichannel spectrometer, a digital spectrograph with a cooled integrating SIT vidicon, and an image photon-counting system attached to the camera of the coude spectrograph. Infrared observations at 1.65, 2.2, and 3.5 microns are also examined. Individual spectral lines of special interest are discussed, the E(B-V) color excess is estimated to be about 0.40, and a distance of 1200 pc is adopted. Analysis of the continuous spectrum yields several simple binary models. A specific model is proposed in which one of the continuum sources is an optically thick object characterized by a model atmosphere at a temperature of 25,000 to 30,000 K and the second source is either a cool black body at 4000 K or a partially optically thick source of bound-free plus free-free radiation from a hydrogen gas with an electron temperature of at least 100,000 K. Some possible parameters of these sources and of the accretion disk are considered.

The Nascent Milliquasar VT J154843.06+220812.6: Tidal Disruption Event or Extreme Accretion State Change?

We present a detailed multiwavelength follow-up of the nuclear radio flare VT J154843.06+220812.6, hereafter VT J1548. VT J1548 was selected as a ~1 mJy radio flare in 3 GHz observations from the Very Large Array Sky Survey. It is located in the nucleus of a low-mass ($\mathrm{log}{M}_{\mathrm{BH}}/{M}_{\odot }\sim 6$) host galaxy with weak or no past active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity. VT J1548 is associated with a slow rising (multiple year), bright mid-IR flare in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer survey, peaking at ~10%L edd. . No associated optical transient is detected, although we cannot rule out a short, early optical flare given the limited data available. Constant late-time (~3 yr post-flare) X-ray emission is detected at ~10 42 erg s –1 . The radio spectral energy distribution is consistent with synchrotron emission from an outflow incident on an asymmetric medium. A follow-up, optical spectrum shows transient, bright, high-ionization coronal line emission ([Fe xi] λ6375, [Fe xi] λ7894, [S xii] λ7612). Transient broad Hα is also detected but without corresponding broad Hβ emission, suggesting high nuclear extinction. We interpret this event as either a tidal disruption event or an extreme flare of an AGN, in both cases obscured by a dusty torus. Although these individual properties have been observed in previous transients, the combination is unprecedented. This event highlights the importance of searches across all wave bands for assembling a sample of nuclear flares that spans the range of observable properties and possible triggers.

Radio and X-Ray Observations of the Luminous Fast Blue Optical Transient AT 2020xnd

We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the fast blue optical transient (FBOT) AT 2020xnd/ZTF 20acigmel at z = 0.2433 from 13 days to 269 days after explosion. AT 2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT 2018cow. AT 2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching L ν ≈ 8 × 10 29 erg s -1 Hz -1 at 20 GHz and 75 days post-explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at L X ≈ 6 × 10 42 erg s -1 . Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment, we find that AT 2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow (v ~ 0.1c–0.2c) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot{M}\approx {10}^{-3}\,{M}_{\odot }$ yr -1 for an assumed wind velocity of v w = 1000 km s -1 ). Similar to AT 2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT 2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT 2018cow, and establish AT 2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically luminous FBOTs with luminous multiwavelength counterparts.

Thermal Conductivity of a Novel Salt-Hydrogel Complex as a Phase Change Material for Building Thermal Management

Use of electricity for space heating, ventilation and air conditioning in buildings may be better managed through temporary energy storage. Compared with electrochemical storage, the levelized cost of thermal energy storage systems can be lower depending on geographical location and thermophysical properties [1]. In any phase change material (PCM), the rate of absorption and release of thermal energy increases with higher thermal conductivity [2]. However, leading PCMs like paraffin waxes have thermal conductivities on the order of 0.1 W/mK. Glauber’s salt, a salt hydrate, possesses a relatively high thermal conductivity but suffers from supercooling and phase segregation. Research has shown that polymer-based composites with salt hydrates can prevent phase segregation and limit supercooling over hundreds of cycles [3] though the thermal conductivity of the composite may be reduced leading to low energy storage rates. Here, we report thermal conductivity measurements on polymer hydrogels which are stable in solutions of Glauber’s salt. To measure thermal conductivity of soft gels, we use a 3-omega method [4] where heat flows bidirectionally through a substrate below and through a gel placed on top. This suits measurements of both gels and liquids unlike transient plane heat source or transient hot wire methods. We report measurements of thermal conductivity of salt-hydrogel complexes as a function of temperature, cross-linking and salt concentration. In addition, we present modeling of thermal conductivity of sodium sulfate solutions with available theories. We finally employ polarized optical microscopy to observe inside the transparent hydrogel networks, showing that precipitating crystals may influence thermal conductivity measurements for high salt concentrations. Our thermal conductivity results combined with enthalpy of phase change, mass density and specific heat are essential to accurately design thermal storage systems for energy-efficient buildings.

Enabling Catalog Simulations of Transient and Variable Sources Based on LSST Cadence Strategies

The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project will conduct a 10 year multi-band survey starting in 2022. Observing strategies for this survey are being actively investigated, and the science capabilities can be best forecasted on the basis of simulated strategies from the LSST Operations Simulator (OpSim). This paper describes the way in which OpSim simulates a stochastic realization of the sequence of LSST pointings over the survey duration, and is based on a model of the observatory (including telescope) and historical data of observational conditions. OpSim outputs contain a record of each simulated pointing of the survey along with a complete characterization of the pointing in terms of observing conditions, and some useful quantities derived from the characteristics of the pointing. Thus, each record can be efficiently used to derive the properties of observations of all astrophysical sources found in that pointing. However, in order to obtain the time series of observations (light curves) of a set of sources, it is often more convenient to compute all observations of an astrophysical source, and iterate over sources. In this document, we describe the open source python package OpSimSummary, which allows for a convenient reordering. The objectives of this package are to provide users with an Application Programming Interface for accessing all such observations and summarizing this information in the form of intermediate data products usable by third party software such as SNANA, thereby also bridging the gap between official LSST products and preexisting simulation codes.

Atmospheric electrical modeling in support of the NASA F106 Storm Hazards Project

With the use of composite (non-metallic) and microelectronics becoming more prevalent in the construction of both military and commercial aircraft, the control systems have become more susceptible to damage or failure from electromagnetic transients. One source of such transients is the lightning discharge. In order to study the effects of the lightning discharge on the vital components of an aircraft, NASA Langley Research Center has undertaken a Storm Hazards Program in which a specially instrumented F106B jet aircraft is flown into active thunderstorms with the intention of being struck by lightning. One of the specific purposes of the program is to quantify the environmental conditions which are conductive to aircraft lightning strikes.
