Multitemporal and geobotanical approach in the remote detection of Greisenization areas in the Serra da Pedra Branca Granite, Goias State, Brazil

A multiseasonal analysis of LANDSAT multispectral images in CCT format permitted the mapping of lithologic facies in the Pedra Branca Granite, using geobotanical associations, which occur in the form of variations in the density of the cerrado vegetation, as well as the predominance of certain distinct vegetation species. Dry season images did not show very good results in lithological differentiation due to anomalous illumination conditions related to the low solar elevation and the homogeneity in the vegetation cover, specially the grass that becomes dry during this season. Rainy season images, on the other hand, allowed the separation of the lithological types, a fact that can be attributed to a greater differentiation among the geobotanical associations. The muscovite-granite facies with greisenization zones within the Serra da Pedra Branca were mapped. This methodology can be successfully applied to similar known granite bodies elsewhere in the Tin Province of Goias.

On the cause of the flat-spot phenomenon observed in silicon solar cells at low temperatures and low intensities

A model that explains the flat-spot power loss phenomenon is presented. Evidence suggests that the effect is due to localized metallurgical interactions between the silicon substrate and the contact metallization. These reactions are shown to result in localized regions in which the P-N junction is destroyed and replaced with a metal semiconductor-like interface. The effects of thermal treatment, crystallographic orientation, junction depth, and metallization are shown along with a method of preventing the effect through the suppression of vacancy formation at the free surface of the contact metallization. Data indicating the effectiveness of a TiN diffusion barrier in preventing the effect are also given.

Study of photoconductive indium antimonide

Indium antimonide (InSb) material was assessed for use as photoconductive infrared detectors under low background conditions. Such detectors must be more rugged, and have lower capacitance, than the common photovoltaic InSb detector. Electronic grade n-type InSb was etched to 50 micrometers thickness, and tin and gold contacts were applied by evaporation. The test devices showed a relatively low ultimate impedance: 7 Mohms at 4.2 K. This was attributed to the presence of impurity levels of very shallow energies, and this material was judged unsuitable for low background detection.

Determination of physical and chemical states of lubricants in concentrated contacts, part 3

Solid and liquid thin films were analyzed by infrared emission Fourier microspectrophotometry. The apparatus used is a commercial absorption instrument modified to an emission instrument, comprising a rotating polarizing device, a miniature blackbody temperature reference adjustable in temperature and radiant flux and a microscope lens with a high numerical aperture in the entrance system for increased sensitivity and resolution. Studies of lubricant behavior in a simulated ball bearing showed the alignment of the fluid molecules in the Hertzian area. Polyphenyl ether plus 1% 1,1,2-trichloroethane (TCE) required lower shear rates for the same degree of alignment than without TCE. The experiment was run with 440 C stainless steel balls coated with TiN, a chemically inert material. In both cases, the alignment was strongly influenced by the presence of TCE. The results showed (1) the dependence of alignment of fluid molecules on flow and not on adsorption at metallic surfaces, (2) phase separation between lubricant and additive under high pressure which results in two phase flow and (3) reduction in traction of torque transmitting (traction) fluids.

A Study of Production of Miscibility Gap Alloys with Controlled Structures

Composite materials were directionally solidified using a new technique to align the constituents longitudinally along the length of the specimen. In some instances a tin coating was applied and diffused into the sample to form a high transition temperature superconducting phase. The superconducting properties were measured and compared with the properties obtained for powder composites and re-directionally solidified powder compacts. The samples which were compacted and redirectionally solidified showed the highest transition temperature and wildest transition range. This indicates that both steps, powder compaction and resolidification, determine the final superconducting properties of the material.

Effect of tail-fin span on stability and control characteristics of a Canard-controlled missile at supersonic Mach numbers

An experimental wind-tunnel investigation was conducted at Mach numbers from 1.60 to 3.50 to obtain the longitudinal and lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics of a circular, cruciform, canard-controlled missile with variations in tail-fin span. In addition, comparisons were made with the experimental aerodynamic characteristics using three missile aeroprediction programs: MISSILE1, MISSILE2, and NSWCDM. The results of the investigation indicate that for the test Mach number range, canard roll control at low angles of attack is feasible on tail-fin configurations with tail-to-canard span ratios of less than or equal to 0.75. The conards are effective pitch and yaw control devices on each tail-fin span configuration tested. Programs MISSILE1 and MISSILE2 provide very good predictions of longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics and fair predictions of lateral-directional aerodynamic characteristics at low angles of attack, with MISSILE2 predictions generally in better agreement with test data. Program NSWCDM provides good longitudinal and lateral-directional aerodynamic predictions that improve with increases in tail-tin span.

Electrical resistivity of composite superconductors

In addition to its superconducting properties, a superconductor is usually characterized by poor thermal conductivity and relatively high electrical resistivity in the normal state. To remedy this situation a study of superconducting properties of Cu-rich CU-Nb wires prepared by directionally solidified and cold-rolled technique was conducted. Some of the specimens were prepared by melting, directional solidification and diffusing in Tin. A total of 12 wire specimens was tested. Each specimen was analyzed by plotting experimental data into the following curves: the graph of the residual resistivity as a function of the specimen current at 4.3 K; and the graph of the electrical resistivity as a function of the temperature at a constant current.

Layered transition metal thiophosphates /MPX3/ as photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical cells

Layered crystals of the transition metal thiophosphates were synthesized and characterized for use as photoelectrodes in photoelectrochemical cells. Crystals incorporating tin and manganese show n-type response while those with iron and nickel show p-type response. These materials have a measured indirect bandgap of about 2.1 eV. They show ability to photoelectrolyze water in acid solutions with onset potentials which change in a Nernstian way as the PH of the solution changes. The onset potential is near zero volts versus a saturated calomel electrode at pH 2. At n-type crystals, oxygen could be evolved upon irradiation at underpotentials of 850 mV and at p-type crystals, hydrogen could be evolved at underpotentials of 400 mV, indicating a net gain in energy conversion. All crystals were unstable in basic solution. Liquid junction photovoltaic cells in iodide-triiodide acid solution using these layered materials were also constructed and found to have low efficiences.

Diffusion barriers

The choice of the metallic film for the contact to a semiconductor device is discussed. One way to try to stabilize a contact is by interposing a thin film of a material that has low diffusivity for the atoms in question. This thin film application is known as a diffusion barrier. Three types of barriers can be distinguished. The stuffed barrier derives its low atomic diffusivity to impurities that concentrate along the extended defects of a polycrystalline layer. Sacrificial barriers exploit the fact that some (elemental) thin films react in a laterally uniform and reproducible fashion. Sacrificial barriers have the advantage that the point of their failure is predictable. Passive barriers are those most closely approximating an ideal barrier. The most-studied case is that of sputtered TiN films. Stuffed barriers may be viewed as passive barriers whose low diffusivity material extends along the defects of the polycrystalline host.

Non-noble metal based metallization systems

The results of efforts to produce a nonsilver metallization system for silicon photovoltaic cells are given. The system uses a metallization system based on molybdenum, tin, and titanium hydride. The initial work in this system was done using the MIDFILM process. The MIDFILM process attains a line resolution comparable to photoresist methods with a process related to screen printing. The surface to be processed is first coated with a thin layer of photopolymer material. Upon exposure to ultraviolet light through a suitable mask, the polymer in the non-pattern area crosslinks and becomes hard. The unexposed pattern areas remain tacky. The conductor material is then applied in the form of a dry mixture of metal which adheres to the tacky pattern area. The assemblage is then fired to ash the photopolymer and sinter the conductor powder.

Transparent conductive coatings

Thin film transparent conductors are discussed. Materials with electrical conductivity and optical transparency are highly desirable in many optoelectronic applications including photovoltaics. Certain binary oxide semiconductors such as tin oxide (SnO2) and indium oxide (In2O3) offer much better performance tradeoff in optoelectronics as well as better mechanical and chemical stability than thin semitransparent films. These thin-film transparent conductors (TC) are essentially wide-bandgap degenerate semiconductors - invariably n-type - and hence are transparent to sub-bandgap (visible) radiation while affording high electrical conductivity due to the large free electron concentration. The principal performance characteristics of TC's are, of course, electrical conductivity and optical transmission. The TC's have a refractive index of around 2.0 and hence act as very efficient antireflection coatings. For using TC's in surface barrier solar cells, the photovoltaic barrier is of utmost importance and so the work function or electron affinity of the TC is also a very important material parameter. Fabrication processes are discussed.

Metal shell technology

Metallic shells are fabricated for a size range from several millimeters down to less than 500 microns in diameter. The technology, developed at JPL, is based on the hollow-jet instability for the large-shell formation, and in addition, on the Bernoulli's force for the microbubble generation. Various materials were processed into hollow spheres, such as AL1100, tin, lead, and a metallic glass-forming alloy, AuPbSb. They exhibited a range of contrasting solidification behaviors and surface characteristics. Some of their potential applications will be explored in this paper.

Rapid solidification of highly undercooled alloy droplets

Experimental work is described on undercooling and structure of tin-lead droplets emulsified in oil. The droplets, predominantly in the size range of 10-20 microns, were cooled at rates ranging from about 0.04 K/sec to 1,000,000 K/sec. The higher cooling rates were obtained by a newly developed technique of quenching the emulsified droplets in a cold liquid. Measured undercoolings (at the lower cooling rates) ranged up to about 100 C. Structures obtained depended strongly on undercooling, cooling rate before nucleation, droplet size, alloy composition and the rate of heat extraction after nucleation.

Solidification of highly undercooled Sn-Pb alloy droplets

Experimental work on undercooling and structure of tin-lead droplets emulsified in oil is described. The droplets, predominantly in the size range of 10 to 20 microns, were cooled at rates (just before nucleation) ranging from about 0.1 to 1 million K/s. The higher cooling rates were obtained by a newly developed technique of quenching the emulsified droplets in a cold liquid. Measured undercoolings (at the lower cooling rates) ranged up to about 100 K. Structures obtained depend strongly on undercooling, cooling rate before and after nucleation, and alloy composition. Droplets containing up to 5 wt pct Pb were apparently single phase when undercooled and rapidly quenched. Droplets in the composition range of about 25-90 wt pct Pb solidified dendritically, even at the most rapid quench rates employed, apparently because these alloys undercooled only slightly before nucleation of the primary phase.

Development of ion-implantation confined, shallow mesa stripe (Pn,Sn)Te/Pb(Te,Se) DH laser diodes

Preliminary results of a program to develop ion implantation confined, shallow mesa stripe (Pb,Sn)Te laser diodes are presented. The practicality of using a shallow mesa stripe to produce single mode laser output and to increase the single mode tuning range are demonstrated. The first results of p-type ion implantation in the lead-tin salts are also reported. It is shown that sodium and lithium both can be used to convert n-type Pb(Te,Se) to p-type. The implant and anneal procedures are described, and electrical characteristics of Li-implanted layers are presented.

Calderas of the Sierra Madre Occidental volcanic field western Mexico

The data base on the mineral content, geomorphology, and extent of caldera in the Sierra Madre Occidental volcanic field is surveyed. Caldera identified from Landsat imagery and confirmed by field studies have generally had high structural levels and are therefore the youngest calderas and sometimes overlap. Detectable margins have been vertical and abrupt, while other structures indicate collapse during eruption and accumulation of thick, intracaldera facies. Calderas which collapsed are generally filled with sedimentation. Mineral deposits hosted by the caldera include tin, silver, gold, and iron, and a spatial relationship has been characterized between the Ocampa caldera structure and mineralized precaldera rocks. The survey has confirmed the locations of several dozen caldera, while the volume of silicic rocks surveyed indicates the presence of several hundred caldera in the Sierra Madre.
