Evolution of the structural transition in Mo 1–x W x Te 2

The composition dependence of the structural transition between the monoclinic 1T' and orthorhombic Td phases in the Mo 1–x W x Te 2 Weyl semimetal was investigated by elastic neutron scattering on single crystals up to x ≈ 0.54. First observed in MoTe 2 , the transition from T d to 1T' is accompanied by an intermediate pseudo-orthorhombic phase, T d *. Upon doping with W, the T d * phase vanishes by x ≈ 0.34. Above this concentration, a phase coexistence behavior with both T d and 1T' is observed instead. The interlayer in-plane positioning parameter δ, which relates to the 1T' β angle, decreases with temperature as well as with W substitution, likely due to strong anharmonicity in the interlayer interactions. As a result, the temperature width of the phase coexistence remains almost constant up to x ≈ 0.54, in contrast to the broadening reported under pressure.

Probing magnetic configuration-mediated topological phases via high harmonic generation in MnBi 2 Te 4

Compared to a space group, a magnetic space group is much more complex, as both magnetic structure and magnetic moment direction can change the original symmetries of materials. The interplay between space symmetry and magnetism can generate versatile novel quantum states. However, detecting these topological phases experimentally, achieved through manipulating the magnetic configuration, has been restricted. It is mainly because the intrinsic link between the theory and the available experimental technique remains elusive. Here, we show that high harmonic generation (HHG) can identify these topological quantum states. In this work, we use rhombohedral MnBi 2 Te 4 film as an example, and analyze the symmetry-dependent harmonic order and signal by combining first-principles calculations and time-dependent Liouville equation numerical computations. Our results provide a fundamental basis for using HHG to study the topological quantum phases mediated by various magnetic configurations that can be easily realized by applying an external magnetic field.

Opposite current-induced spin polarizations in bulk-metallic Bi 2 Se 3 and bulk-insulating Bi 2 Te 2 Se topological insulator thin flakes

One of the most fundamental and exotic properties of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) is spin-momentum locking (SML) of their topological surface states (TSSs), promising for potential applications in future spintronics. However, other possible conduction channels, such as a trivial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with strong Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and bulk-conducting states that may possess a spin Hall effect (SHE), can coexist in 3D TIs, making determining the origin of the current-induced spin polarization (CISP) difficult. Here, we directly compared the CISP between bulk-insulating Bi 2 Te 2 Se (BTS221) and bulk-metallic Bi2Se3 thin flakes using spin potentiometry. In the bulk-insulating BTS221, the observed CISP has a sign consistent with the expected helicity of the SML of the TSS, but an opposite sign to its calculated bulk spin Hall conductivity. However, compared to BTS221, an opposite CISP is observed in the bulk-metallic Bi2Se3, consistent with both the expectations of its Rashba-Edelstein effect of the band-bending induced 2DEG and bulk intrinsic spin Hall Effect (SHE). If one assumes a representative occupation of the Rashba band of 3×10 13 cm –2 in Bi 2 Se 3 with a relevant relaxation time of 100 fs, the contribution to the CISP could be more dominated by the bulk intrinsic SHE. Our results provide an electrical way to distinguish the TSS from other possible conducting channels in spin transport measurements on 3D TIs, and open ways for the potential applications in charge-spin conversion devices.

Tuning magnetism and band topology through antisite defects in Sb-doped MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7

The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure in a magnetic topological insulator is crucial in order to realize various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals, Chern insulators, etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that under Sb doping the newly discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator MnBi 4 Te 7 evolves from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which results in additional Mn sublattices that modify the delicate interlayer magnetic interactions and cause the dominant Mn sublattice to go from AFM to FM. We further investigate the effect of antisites on the band topology using the first-principles calculations. Without considering antisites, the series evolves from AFM topological insulator (x=0) to FM axion insulators. In the exaggerated case of 16.7% of periodic antisites, the band topology is modified and a type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase can be realized at intermediate dopings. Therefore, this doping series provides a fruitful platform with continuously tunable magnetism and topology for investigating emergent phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, Fermi arc states, etc.

Evolution of electronic and magnetic properties in the topological semimetal SmSb x Te 2– x

The ZrSiS-type materials have attracted intensive attention due to the existence of various topological fermions. The magnetic version of the ZrSiS-type materials, L n SbTe(L n = lanthanides), is an ideal candidate to explore novel exotic states due to the interaction between magnetism and topology. In this work, we report the experimental study on structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and electronic properties for SmSb x Te 2– x with various Sb content. Further, the revealed evolutions of these properties with tuning the compositions would provide useful insights for the fundamental topological physics and the future applications.

Electronic and vibrational properties of bulk Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 from first-principles calculations

Here we use density functional theory based ab initio calculations to investigate the structural, vibrational, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered ferromagnet Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (CGT) that has attracted attention for potential spintronic applications. We optimize the structure for a fixed c/a ratio. Our results are in excellent agreement with experimental data on structure, phonons, and electronic properties. The use of van der Waals interactions and relativistic spin-orbit coupling yields accurate lattice constants and interlayer distances. Simultaneously, the adopted theoretical methods lead to a rigorous description of the vibrational normal modes, as well as the valence bands, that are in excellent agreement with Raman spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectra, respectively. The magnetic moment is slightly overestimated, and the magnetic anisotropy has the correct sign but is greater in magnitude than that in experiment. We find that inclusion of the on-site Coulomb repulsion on Cr−3d orbitals worsens agreement with experiment, in contrast to previous studies. Our results provide a path toward ab initio analysis of magnetic heterostructures based on CGT.

Observation of anisotropic Dirac cones in the topological material Ti 2 Te 2 P

Anisotropic bulk Dirac (or Weyl) cones in three-dimensional systems have recently gained intense research interest as they are examples of materials with tilted Dirac (or Weyl) cones indicating the violation of Lorentz invariance. In contrast, the studies on anisotropic surface Dirac cones in topological materials which contribute to anisotropic carrier mobility have been limited. By employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we reveal the anisotropic surface Dirac dispersion in a tetradymite material Ti 2 Te 2 P on the (001) plane of the Brillouin zone. We observe quasielliptical Fermi pockets at the M ¯ point of the Brillouin zone forming the anisotropic surface Dirac cones. Our calculations of the Z 2 indices confirm that the system is topologically nontrivial with multiple topological phases in the same material. In addition, the observed nodal-line-like feature formed by bulk bands makes this system topologically rich.

Magnetic Structure and Spin Fluctuation in Colossal Magnetoresistance Ferrimagnet Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The ferrimagnetic insulator Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , which features a Curie temperature T c at 78 K and a delicate yet consequential magnetic frustration, exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) when the magnetic field is applied along the magnetic hard axis, surprisingly inconsistent with existing precedents [Y. Ni, H. Zhao, Y. Zhang, B. Hu, I. Kimchi, and G. Cao, Phys. Rev. B 103, L161105 (2021)]. This discovery motivates a thorough single-crystal neutron diffraction study in order to gain insights into the magnetic structure and its hidden correlation with the new type of CMR. Here we report a noncollinear magnetic structure below the T c where the moments lie predominantly within the basal plane but tilt toward the c axis by ≈10° at ambient conditions. A substantial magnetic diffuse scattering decays slowly and persists well above the T c . The evolution of the spin correlation lengths agrees well with the electrical resistivity, underscoring the role of spin fluctuation contributing to the magnetoresistivity near the transition. Further, application of magnetic field along the c axis renders a swift occurrence of CMR but only a slow tilting of the magnetic moments toward the c axis. The unparalleled changes indicate a nonconsequential role of magnetic polarization.

Kerr, Faraday, and magnetoelectric effects in MnBi 2 Te 4 thin films

The topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a characteristic property of topological insulators. In this paper, we use a simplified coupled-Dirac-cone electronic structure model to theoretically evaluate the THz and far infrared Kerr and Faraday responses of thin films of MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4 with up to N = 10 septuple layers with the goal of clarifying the relationship between these convenient magnetooptical observables and the TME. Here we find that for even N, the linear Kerr and Faraday responses to an electric field vanish in the low-frequency limit, even though the magnetoelectric response is large and approximately quantized.

Massive Suppression of Proximity Pairing in Topological ( Bi 1 - x Sb x ) 2 Te 3 Films on Niobium

Interfacing bulk conducting topological Bi 2 Se 3 films with s-wave superconductors initiates strong superconducting order in the nontrivial surface states. Yet, bulk insulating topological (Bi 1-x Sb x ) 2 Te 3 films on bulk Nb instead exhibit a giant attenuation of surface superconductivity, even for films only two-layers thick. This massive suppression of proximity pairing is shown by ultrahigh-resolution band mappings and by contrasting quantified superconducting gaps with those of heavily n-doped topological Bi 2 Se 3 /Nb. The results underscore the limitations of using superconducting proximity effects to realize topological superconductivity in nearly intrinsic systems.

First Proton-Induced Cross Sections on a Stored Rare Ion Beam: Measurement of Te 118 ( p , γ ) for Explosive Nucleosynthesis

We present the first nuclear cross-section measurements of (p,$\gamma$) and (p,n) reactions on 118 Te at energies relevant for the $\gamma$-process nucleosynthesis. Absolute cross-section values for center-of-mass energies of 6, 7 and 10 MeV are provided, together with a theoretical extrapolation to the Gamow window. This experiment marks the first time that direct proton-induced reactions have been measured on a radioactive ion beam at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. This paves the way for a large variety of measurements, delivering new constraints for explosive nucleosynthesis and for physics beyond nuclear stability.

Thermomagnetic properties of Bi 2 Te 3 single crystal in the temperature range from 55 K to 380 K

Magnetothermoelectric transport provides an understanding of coupled electron-hole-phonon current in topological materials and has applications in energy conversion and cooling. In this paper, we study the Nernst coefficient, the magneto-Seebeck coefficient, and the magnetoresistance of single-crystalline Bi 2 Te 3 under external magnetic field in the range of –3T to 3T and in the temperature range of 55 K to 380 K. Moreau's relation is employed to justify both the overall trend of the Nernst coefficient and the temperature at which this coefficient changes sign. We observe a nonlinear relationship between the Nernst coefficient and the applied magnetic field in the temperature range of 55 K to 255 K. An increase in both the Nernst coefficient and the magneto-Seebeck coefficient is observed as the temperature is reduced which can be attributed to the increased mobility of the carriers at lower temperatures. First-principles density functional theory calculations were carried out to physically model the experimental data including electronic and transport properties. Simulation findings agreed with the experiments and provide a theoretical insight to justify the measurements.

Tuning the critical Li intercalation concentrations for MoX 2 (X = S, Se, or Te) bilayer phase transitions

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS 2 , are known to undergo a structural phase transformation as well as a change in the electronic conductivity upon Li intercalation. These properties make them candidates for charge-tunable ion-insertion materials that could be used in electro-chemical devices. In this work we study the phase stability and electronic structure of H and T’ Li-intercalated MoX 2 bilayers with X=S, Se, or Te. Here, using first-principles calculations in combination with classical and machine learning modeling approaches, we find that the H phase is more stable at low Li concentration for all X, and the critical Li concentration at which the T’→H transition occurs decreases with increasing mass of X. Furthermore the relative free energy of the two phases becomes less sensitive to Li insertion with increasing atomic mass of the chalcogen atom X. While the electronic conductivity increases with increasing ion concentration at low concentrations, we do not observe a (positive) conductivity jump at the phase transition from H to T’.

Observation of a smoothly tunable Dirac point in Ge ( Bi x Sb 1 - x ) 2 Te 4

State-of-the-art topological devices require the use of topologically protected surface states to drive electronic transport. Here, we examine a tunable topological system, Ge(Bi x Sb 1-x ) 2 Te 4 , for a range of $\mathcal{x}$ values from 0 to 1, using a combination of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results show that the Dirac point shifts linearly with $\mathcal{x}$, crossing the Fermi energy near $\mathcal{x}$=0.7. This observation of a smoothly tunable, isolated Dirac point crossing through the topological transport regime and having strong linear dependence with substitution can be critical for future topological spintronics applications.

Electronic and structural properties of RbCe X 2 ( X 2 : O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 )

We report triangular lattice delafossite compounds built from magnetic lanthanide ions are a topic of recent interest due to their frustrated magnetism and realization of quantum disordered magnetic ground states. Here we report the evolution of the structure and electronic ground states of RbCeX 2 compounds, built from a triangular lattice of Ce 3+ ions, upon varying their anion character (X 2 =O 2 , S 2 , SeS, Se 2 , TeSe, Te 2 ). This includes the discovery of a new member of this series, RbCeO 2 , that potentially realizes a quantum disordered ground state analogous to NaYbO 2 . Magnetization and susceptibility measurements reveal that all compounds manifest mean-field antiferromagnetic interactions and, with the exception of the oxide, possess signatures of magnetic correlations onset below 1 K. The crystalline electric field level scheme is explored via neutron scattering and ab initio calculations in order to model the intramultiplet splitting of the J=5/2 multiplet. In addition to the two excited doublets expected within the J=5/2 manifold, we observe one extra local mode present across the sample series. This added mode shifts downward in energy with increasing anion mass and decreasing crystal field strength, suggesting a long-lived anomalous mode endemic to anion motion about the Ce3 + sites.

Highly tunable band inversion in AB 2 X 4 (A=Ge, Sn, Pb; B=As, Sb, Bi; X=Se, Te) compounds

Topological materials have been discovered so far largely by searching for existing compounds in crystallographic databases, but there are potentially new topological materials with desirable features that have not been synthesized. One of the desirable features is high tunability resulting from the band inversion with a very small direct band gap, which can be tuned by changes in pressure or strain to induce a topological phase transition. Here, using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have studied the septuple layered AB 2 X 4 series compounds, where A=(Ge, Sn and Pb), B=(As, Sb and Bi), and X=(Se and Te). With the DFT thermodynamic stability validated by the already-reported compounds in these series, we predict stable Se compounds, which are not found in crystallographic database. Among them, we find that GeBi 2 Se 4 and GeSb 2 Se 4 having a small direct band gap at the Z point are very close to a strong topological insulator, which can be tuned by a moderate pressure to induce the band inversion. Importantly, the topological features with the small direct band gap are well isolated in both momentum and energy windows, which offers high tunability for studying the topological phase transition.

Probing intrinsic magnetization dynamics of the Y 3⁢ Fe 5 ⁢O 12 /Bi 2 ⁢Te 3 interface at low temperature

Topological insulator–magnetic insulator (TI–MI) heterostructures hold significant promise in the field of spintronics, offering the potential for manipulating magnetization through topological surface state–enabled spin-orbit torque. However, many TI–MI interfaces are plagued by issues such as contamination within the magnetic insulator layer and the presence of a low-density transitional region of the topological insulator. These interfacial challenges often obscure the intrinsic behavior of the TI–MI system. In this study, we addressed these challenges by depositing sputtered Bi 2 ⁢Te 3 on liquid phase epitaxy grown Y 3 ⁢Fe 5 ⁢O 12 /Gd 3 ⁢Ga 5 ⁢O 12 . The liquid phase epitaxy grown Y 3 ⁢Fe 5 ⁢O 12 has been previously shown to have exceptional interface quality, without an extended transient layer derived from interdiffusion processes of the substrate or impurity ions, thereby eliminating rare-earth impurity-related losses in the MI at low temperatures. At the TI–MI interface, high-resolution depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry confirmed the absence of a low-density transitional growth region of the TI. By overcoming these undesirable interfacial effects, we isolate and probe the intrinsic low-temperature magnetization dynamics and transport properties of the TI–MI interface. In conclusion, our findings revealed strong spin pumping at low temperatures, accompanied by an additional in-plane anisotropy. The enhanced spin pumping at low temperatures is correlated with the observed suppression of bulk conduction and the weak antilocalization in the TI film, highlighting the interplay between the transport and spin pumping behavior in the TI–MI system.

Development of an Optical Library for Coevaporated CdSe x Te 1– x

The conversion efficiency of CdTe solar cells may be improved by bandgap engineering, i.e., changing the bandgap value through the addition of Se in the absorber. The Se alloying enables a short-circuit current density improvement, as it leads to a bandgap energy value decrease. Furthermore, it has been associated with increased minority carrier lifetimes, assuring high open-circuit voltage values. An Se gradient profile control can further optimize the solar cell performance. Thus, an optical model baseline of the CdSe x Te 1–x (CST) compound was developed. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were conducted to accurately extract the optical constants of ten CST layers deposited through coevaporation with x varying from 0 to 1. Using the measured dielectric function spectra from the discrete CST layers with varying x, and considering the composition-induced shift in the critical point energies, an energy-shift model was employed to develop the accurate optical library for the CST compound for any x value to provide data for future modeling and optimization. Furthermore, the library accuracy was validated through optical simulations of the quantum efficiency of a graded CST solar cell using the finite-difference time-domain method by replicating the Se profile in the absorber layer measured through secondary ion mass spectrometry.
