Coude spectrograms of comet Kohoutek obtained with the ESO 152-cm telescope in La Silla, Chile are discussed. Emission features of the C3, CH, and CO(+) molecules found in the blue region of the spectrum are considered along with measured emissions in the visual region of the spectrum. The observational and cometary data are given in tabular form.
The measurement of the bending moment required to obtain a given deflection in short lengths of flat conductor cable (FCC) is presented in this report. Experimental data were taken on 10 different samples of FCC and normalized to express all bending moments (relative stiffness factor) in terms of a cable 5.1 cm (2.0 in.) in width. Data are presented in tabular and graphical form for the covenience of designers who may be interested in finding torques exerted on critical components by short lengths of FCC.
Deep Space Network coverage of Helios-1 and Helios-2 from Feb. 1 through Apr. 15, 1977 is presented in tabular form. Mark III data system (MDS) performance and station modifications for MDS configuration are discussed. Cross support for Helios operations by DSN and STDN is described and their downlink performances compared.
A tabular outline of comparative data is presented for 340 basic dimensional, morphological, and structural parameters and related aspects for three craters of the flat-floored, central uplift type, two of which are natural terrestrial impact craters and one is a large-scale experimental explosion crater. The three craters are part of a general class, in terms of their morphology and structural deformation that is represented on each of the terrestrial planets including the moon. One of the considered craters, the Flynn Creek Crater, was formed by a hypervelocity impact event approximately 360 m.y. ago in what is now north central Tennessee. The impacting body appears to have been a carbonaceous chondrite or a cometary mass. The second crater, the Steinheim Crater, was formed by an impact event approximately 14.7 m.y. ago in what is now southwestern Germany. The Snowball Crater was formed by the detonation of a 500-ton TNT hemisphere on flat-lying, unconsolidated alluvium in Alberta, Canada.
A mass spectrometer and incoherent scatter empirical thermosphere model is used to measure the neutral temperature and neutral densities for N2, O2, O, Ar, He and H, the mean molecular weight, and the total mass density. The data is presented in tabular form.
A spiral-groove, self-acting face seal was rig tested at advanced gas turbine operating conditions to determine wear and leakage rates. The spiral-groove, self-acting geometry was located in the rotating seal seat. Seal component wear induced by start-stop operation was measured after subjecting the test seal to 176 start-stop cycles. Wear occurring during normal operation was documented throughout a 75-hour endurance test. Seal air leakage was also measured. During endurance operation, the seal was subjected to operating conditions bounded by the values surface speed - 244 m/s (800 ft/sec), air pressure - 148 N/sq cm abs (215 psia), and air temperature - 622 K (660 F). The post-test condition of the seal components was documented. Wear data is presented in tabular form, while seal air leakage is presented graphically, as a function of pressure and speed.
Eight electrochemical cells were tested for precycling capacity and compared. The cell design variables included teflon treatment, silver treatment, light loading, and a polypropylene separator. Data are presented in tabular form.
Field experiments to (1) study the biomass and geometrical structure properties of vegetation canopies to determine their impact on microwave emission data, and (2) to verify whether time series microwave data can be related to soil hydrologic properties for use in soil type classification. Truck mounted radiometers at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz were used to obtain microwave brightness temperatures of bare vegetated test plots under different conditions of soil wetness, plant water content and canopy structure. Observations of soil moisture, soil temperature, vegetation biomass and other soil and canopy parameters were made concurrently with the microwave measurements. The experimental design and data collection procedures for both experiments are documented and the reduced data are presented in tabular form.
An experimental study of the flow caused by a planar shock wave impinging obliquely on a cylinder is presented. The complex three dimensional shock wave and boundary layer interaction occurring in practical problems, such as the shock wave impingement from the shuttle nose on an external fuel tank, and store carriage interference on a supersonic tactical aircraft were investigated. A data base for numerical computations of complex flows was also investigated. The experimental techniques included pressure measurements and oil flow patterns on the surface of the cylinder, and shadowgraphs and total and static pressure surveys on the leeward and windward planes of symmetry. The complete data is presented in tabular form. The results reveal a highly complex flow field with two separation zones, regions of high crossflow, and multiple reflected shocks and expansion fans.
In order to support analysis of the STS-6 advanced flexible reusable surface insulation (AFRSI) anomaly, data were obtained for aerodynamic and aeroacoustic environments in affected areas of the orbiter. Data are presented in tabular form.
A shock-related separation of a turbulent boundary layer has been studied and documented. The flow was that of an axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over a 5.02-cm-diam cylinder that was aligned with the wind tunnel axis. The boundary layer was compressed by a 30 deg half-angle conical flare, with the cone axis inclined at an angle alpha to the cylinder axis. Nominal test conditions were P sub tau equals 1.7 atm and M sub infinity equals 2.85. Measurements were confined to the upper-symmetry, phi equals 0 deg, plane. Data are presented for the cases of alpha equal to 0. 5. and 10 deg and include mean surface pressures, streamwise and normal mean velocities, kinematic turbulent stresses and kinetic energies, as well as reverse-flow intermittencies. All data are given in tabular form; pressures, streamwise velocities, turbulent shear stresses, and kinetic energies are also presented graphically.
Flush pressure orifices installed on the nose section of a 1/7-scale model of the F-14 airplane were evaluated for use as a flush airdata system (FADS). Wing-tunnel tests were conducted in the 11- by 11-ft Unitary Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center. A full-scale FADS of the same configuration was previously tested using an F-14 aircraft at the Dryden Flight Research Facility of NASA Ames Research Center (Ames-Dryden). These tests, which were published, are part of a NASA program to assess accuracies of FADS for use on aircraft. The test program also provides data to validate algorithms for the shuttle entry airdata system developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. The wind-tunnel test Mach numbers were 0.73, 0.90, 1.05, 1.20, and 1.39. Angles of attack were varied in 2 deg increments from -4 deg to 20 deg. Sideslip angles were varied in 4 deg increments from -8 deg to 8 deg. Airdata parameters were evaluated for determination of free-stream values of stagnation pressure, static pressure, angle of attack, angle of sideslip, and Mach number. These parameters are, in most cases, the same as the parameters investigated in the flight test program. The basic FADS wind-tunnel data are presented in tabular form. A discussion of the more accurate parameters is included.
ASTRO-D, which is to be launched by a MU-3II vehicle, is a scientific Earth orbiting satellite of the Institute of Space and Astronomical Science (ISAS) of Japan. It will be launched in Uchinoura, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The Deep Space Network will support 4 to 8 contacts per day, depending on the launch and early orbit phase (LEOP) and mission phase, providing only downlink telemetry recording to all stations. Data is given in tabular form for network support, frequency assignments, telemetry, command, and tracking support responsibility.
The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) will conduct a survey of the entire celestial sphere in the extreme ultraviolet (UV) spectrum, 100 to 1000 angstrom units. This survey will be accomplished using four grazing incidence telescopes mounted on a spinning spacecraft whose spin axis is along the Sun line. Data is taken only when the spacecraft is in the Earth's shadow. The EUVE will be placed in a near circular orbit by a Delta expendable launch vehicle. The design orbit is circular at an altitude of 550 km by 28.5 degrees for a period of 96 minutes. The EUVE will be flown on a standardized Explorer Platform (EP) which will be reused for followup Explorer missions. Coverage will be provided by the Deep Space Network (DSN) for EUVE emergencies that would prevent communications via the normal channels of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). Emergency support will be provided by the 26-meter subnet. Data is presented in tabular form for DSN support, frequency assignments, telemetry, and command.
This paper presents consistently reduced UV continuum flux densities amd spectra indices derived from all 499 usable archived IUE observations of blazars made through mid-1991. The extraction of 1D spectra and the measurement of spectral parameters are discussed. A detailed error analysis is presented, including a discussion of the difference in the calibration between the IUE long- and short-wavelength cameras. The resulting data are presented in tabular and graphical form and are available by electronic mail as well. These results will be most useful for variability studies, but can also be used to characterize the broad-band energy distributions and to compare blazar properties with those of other AGN. This is the first in a series of papers, in which extracted spectral parameters will be published for the over 4500 spectra of AGN in the IUE archives.
Values of lateral and longitudinal metacentric heights for various seaplanes were calculated by means of approximate formulae derived here. The data are given in tabular form. Upon plotting these metacentric heights against the corresponding gross weights, it appears that the metacentric height is approximately a straight line function of the gross weight. For the lateral metacentric height GM = 13 + .002 W and for longitudinal metacentric height GM = 15 + .002 W, GM is in feet and the gross weight (W) is in pounds. Although only approximate, it is thought that the values indicated here are a reliable guide to current practice. It is recommended that the longitudinal and lateral metacentric heights be made equal and of the value given by GM = 15 = .002 W. The proper length or spacing required to satisfy the indicated value may then be obtained from substitution in the approximate formulae for metacentric height.
Data are given in tabular form on the extent of recent journal accessions (1990-1992) to the NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) Database. Journals are presented by country in two ways: first by an alphabetical listing; and second, by the decreasing number of citations extracted from these journals during this period. An appendix containing a statistical summary is included.
Three dimensional flowfield measurements have been obtained for a semispan 30-degree swept wing with a simulated glaze ice accretion. The model tested has a NACA 0012 section perpendicular to the leading edge. Measurements were made using a two-component laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) system. Mean velocity measurements were obtained for all three velocity components. Streamwise turbulence intensities were also obtained. All measurements were taken in the University of Illinois 3 by 4 foot subsonic wind tunnel at a Reynolds number of 1 million and 8 degrees angle of attack. The data is presented in tabular form.
