Theoretical investigation of the interstellar CH3NC/CH3CN ratio

Calculations have been performed to determine the abundance ratio of the metastable isomer CH3NC to the stable isomer CH3CN in dense interstellar clouds. According to gas phase, ion-molecule treatments, these molecules are both synthesized via protonated ion precursors. A calculation has been made of the ratio of the formation rates of the protonated precursor ions, CH3NCH(+) and CH3CNH(+), synthesized via the radiative association reaction between CH3(+) and HCN, which is thought to be the dominant formation process of the two isomeric ions. The calculations, which involve both ab initio quantum chemistry and equilibrium determinations, lead to a predicted CH3NCH(+)/CH3CNH(+) formation rate ratio between 0.1 and 0.4. If this ratio is maintained in the neutral species formed from the precursor ions, theory predicts a sizable abundance for methyl isocyanide (CH3NC) and lends credence to its tentative observation.

Fuel conservative guidance for shipboard landing of powered-lift STOL aircraft

A computer-simulation study was undertaken to investigate the application of Fuel Conservative Guidance (FCG) techniques, developed at NASA Ames Research Center, to improve the fuel efficiency and minimize recovery time of powered-lift short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) airplanes operating from aircraft carriers at sea. The FCG system consists of a set of algorithms whose coefficients and parameters limits match those of the Quiet Short-Haul Research Aircraft. When a flightpath is specified by a set of initial conditions for the aircraft and a set of positional waypoints with associated airspeeds, the FCG synthesizes the necessary guidance commands to capture the specified path at any specified waypoint and to optimize fuel consumption and time fo fly along the path. Closed-form expressions are developed for calculating the altitude profile synthesized by the algorithm. Results of this simulation study show that when restrictions on the approach flightpath imposed for manual operation are removed completely, fuel consumption during the approach was reduced by as much as 38 percent (434 lb of fuel) and the time required to fly the flightpath was reduced by as much as 28 percent (209 sec). Savings because of FCG were produced by: (1) shortening the total flight time and distance, and (2) keeping the airspeed high as long as possible to minimize time spent flying in a powered-lift mode.

The synthesis, characterization and thermal chemistry of modified norbornenyl PMR endcaps

As part of a program to further the understanding of the polymerization of Nadic-Endcapped PMR systems, a series of model Norbornenyl-Imides has been synthesized and their thermal behavior explored. Their syntheses and characterizations as well as their rearrangement and polymerization chemistry are described. Monomer isomerization at temperatures as low as 125 C and oligomer formation at somewhat higher temperatures are observed. Approximate relative rates for competing isomerization pathways are established and some information is obtained about the details of oligomer formation. The relationship of this data to current PMR systems is briefly discussed.

New reflective symmetry design capability in the JPL-IDEAS Structure Optimization Program

The JPL-IDEAS antenna structure analysis and design optimization computer program was modified to process half structure models of symmetric structures subjected to arbitrary external static loads, synthesize the performance, and optimize the design of the full structure. Significant savings in computation time and cost (more than 50%) were achieved compared to the cost of full model computer runs. The addition of the new reflective symmetry analysis design capabilities to the IDEAS program allows processing of structure models whose size would otherwise prevent automated design optimization. The new program produced synthesized full model iterative design results identical to those of actual full model program executions at substantially reduced cost, time, and computer storage.

Multi-input, multi-output system control for experimental aircraft

Two techniques, direct eigenspace assignment (DEA) and explicit model following (EMF), are used initially to synthesize control laws for the longitudinal dynamics model of a Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) vehicle in the landing configuration. The vehicle model and the flight control design are presented. The two synthesis techniques are briefly discussed and the handling qualities specifications mapped into the algorithm formulations. The control laws resulting from exercising the algorithms are evaluated in terms of achieved performance and robustness. Since the synthesized control laws involve full state feedback, methodologies were implemented for the control laws using output feedback without adversely affecting performance and robustness. Finally, the salient features of the two design techniques are summarized and the areas that require further investigation are suggested.

The design of multirate digital control systems

The successive loop closures synthesis method is the only method for multirate (MR) synthesis in common use. A new method for MR synthesis is introduced which requires a gradient-search solution to a constrained optimization problem. Some advantages of this method are that the control laws for all control loops are synthesized simultaneously, taking full advantage of all cross-coupling effects, and that simple, low-order compensator structures are easily accomodated. The algorithm and associated computer program for solving the constrained optimization problem are described. The successive loop closures , optimal control, and constrained optimization synthesis methods are applied to two example design problems. A series of compensator pairs are synthesized for each example problem. The succesive loop closure, optimal control, and constrained optimization synthesis methods are compared, in the context of the two design problems.

Flight control synthesis for flexible aircraft using Eigenspace assignment

The use of eigenspace assignment techniques to synthesize flight control systems for flexible aircraft is explored. Eigenspace assignment techniques are used to achieve a specified desired eigenspace, chosen to yield desirable system impulse residue magnitudes for selected system responses. Two of these are investigated. The first directly determines constant measurement feedback gains that will yield a close-loop system eigenspace close to a desired eigenspace. The second technique selects quadratic weighting matrices in a linear quadratic control synthesis that will asymptotically yield the close-loop achievable eigenspace. Finally, the possibility of using either of these techniques with state estimation is explored. Application of the methods to synthesize integrated flight-control and structural-mode-control laws for a large flexible aircraft is demonstrated and results discussed. Eigenspace selection criteria based on design goals are discussed, and for the study case it would appear that a desirable eigenspace can be obtained. In addition, the importance of state-space selection is noted along with problems with reduced-order measurement feedback. Since the full-state control laws may be implemented with dynamic compensation (state estimation), the use of reduced-order measurement feedback is less desirable. This is especially true since no change in the transient response from the pilot's input results if state estimation is used appropriately. The potential is also noted for high actuator bandwidth requirements if the linear quadratic synthesis approach is utilized. Even with the actuator pole location selected, a problem with unmodeled modes is noted due to high bandwidth. Some suggestions for future research include investigating how to choose an eigenspace that will achieve certain desired dynamics and stability robustness, determining how the choice of measurements effects synthesis results, and exploring how the phase relationships between desired eigenvector elements effects the synthesis results.

Short-lived nuclei in the early solar system

An overview is given of the existence and abundance of short-lived nuclei that were present in the early solar system. It is shown that there are excesses of certain isotopes that may be assigned to the decay of short-lived radioactive nuclei corresponding to an abundance of about 0.0001 relative to a neighboring stable isotope. This abundance is roughly similar to the level of general nonlinear isotopic anomalies present in meteoritic material (excluding oxygen) which are not attributable to short-lived nuclei. If these results are representative of the bulk solar system, they indicate that about 0.0001 solar mass of freshly synthesized material of peculiar composition was added to the protosolar nebula as it was formed from the interstellar medium. This material must have been synthesized about three million yr before the formation of the solar system.

Environmentally stable polymers and coatings for space application: CH-5, supplement 10

High molecular weight, randomly coupled poly(imide siloxane) soluble block copolymers were synthesized from bis(amino propyl) polydimethylsiloxane equilibrates of various molecular weights, aromatic metalinked diamines, and 3,3'-4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA). Two synthetic procedures were successfully used to synthesize the poly(amic acid siloxane) intermediates. For both synthetic procedures, a cosolvent system was employed to achieve complete solvation of all components throughout the polymerization. Physical property characterization is continuing.

Current status of the prebiotic synthesis of small molecules

Experiments designed to simulate conditions on the primitive earth and to demonstrate how the organic compounds that made up the first living organisms were synthesized are described. Simulated atmospheres with CH4, N2, NH3, and H2O were found to be most effective for synthesis of small prebiotic molecules, although atmospheres with H2, CO, N2, and H2O, and with H2, CO2, N2, and H2O also give good yields of organic compounds provided the H2/CO and H2/CO2 ratios are above 1 and 2, respectively. The spark discharge (which is a good source of HCN) and UV light are also important. Reasonable prebiotic syntheses were worked out for the amino acids that occur in proteins (with the exception of lysine, arginine, and histidine), and for purines, pyrimidines, sugars, and nicotinic acid. Many of the molecules that have been produced in these simulated primitive-earth experiments are found in carbonaceous chondrites.

Laboratory experiments in the study of the chemistry of the outer planets

It is shown that much information about planetary chemistry and physics can be gained through laboratory work. The types of experiments relevant to planetary research concern fundamental properties, spectral/optical properties, 'Miller-Urey' syntheses, and detailed syntheses. Specific examples of studies of the chemistry in the atmosphere of Titan are described with attention given to gas phase chemistry in the troposphere and the composition of model Titan aerosols. A list of work that still needs to be done is provided.

Pulse-Population Modulation For Induction Machines

Low-frequency synthesizer developed to provide low-frequency waveform by synthesis from high-frequency power system. Waveform assembled by allowing conduction of discrete half cycles of high-frequency carrier. Frequency of synthesized wave controlled by pulse pattern. By controlling relationship between slip and stator frequencies, one operates induction motor either as motor or generator. Such bidirectional energy transducer used as starter/generator for engine, or as servo-mechanism for control of acceleration and deceleration. Other advantages include operation under controlled voltage-to-frequency ratios to maintain high-efficiency and high power factor, and no reflection of low-frequency noise into 20-kHz distribution bus.

Planetary astronomy

The goal is to use a variety of observational techniques and instruments to reduce, interpret, and synthesize groundbased astronomical data concerning the comets, asteroids, and other small bodies of the solar system in order to study the compositions, physical characteristics, population properties, and evolution of these bodies. This year's research has involved five distinct efforts. Chapman has studied asteroids, with emphasis on synthesizing groundbased databases to determine surface mineralogies and population characteristics; many new results on astronomy, size-distributions, and asteroid family traits have been obtained.

A parallel expert system for the control of a robotic air vehicle

Expert systems can be used to govern the intelligent control of vehicles, for example the Robotic Air Vehicle (RAV). Due to the nature of the RAV system the associated expert system needs to perform in a demanding real-time environment. The use of a parallel processing capability to support the associated expert system's computational requirement is critical in this application. Thus, algorithms for parallel real-time expert systems must be designed, analyzed, and synthesized. The design process incorporates a consideration of the rule-set/face-set size along with representation issues. These issues are looked at in reference to information movement and various inference mechanisms. Also examined is the process involved with transporting the RAV expert system functions from the TI Explorer, where they are implemented in the Automated Reasoning Tool (ART), to the iPSC Hypercube, where the system is synthesized using Concurrent Common LISP (CCLISP). The transformation process for the ART to CCLISP conversion is described. The performance characteristics of the parallel implementation of these expert systems on the iPSC Hypercube are compared to the TI Explorer implementation.

Ionic binding properties of carrier ampholytes

Radioactive ampholytes were synthesized with specific activity of 638 microCi/g. These were used in studies of ampholyte binding to target proteins under nonionic conditions. These radioactive ampholytes bound to target proteins but were dissociable in sodium chloride solutions with dissociation occurring in a concentration dependent way. The ampholytes could be dissociated from target molecules using excess unlabelled ampholytes synthesized in the laboratory as well as commercial ampholytes. Radioactive ampholytes were bound to target proteins with different isoelectric points, and the bound ampholytes were eluted and analyzed by recycling isoelectric focusing. The results showed that acidic proteins bound basic ampholytes and basic proteins bound acidic ampholytes.
