Energy spectrum of cascades generated by muons in Baksan underground scintillation telescope

Spectrum of cascades generated by cosmic ray muons underground is presented. The mean zenith angle of the muon arrival is theta=35 deg the depth approx. 1000 hg/sq cm. In cascades energy range 700 GeV the measured spectrum is in agreement with the sea-level integral muon spectrum index gamma=3.0. Some decrease of this exponent has been found in the range 4000 Gev.

Study of photonuclear muon interactions at Baksan underground scintillation telescope

The method of pion-muon-electron decays recording was used to distinguish between purely electron-photon and hadronic cascades, induced by high energy muons underground. At energy approx. 1 Tev a ratio of the number of hadronic to electromagnetic cascades was found equal 0.11 + or - .03 in agreement with expectation. But, at an energy approx. 4 Tev a sharp increase of this ratio was indicated though not statistically sound (0.52 + or - .13).

Observations of diffractive interstellar scintillation phenomena

Recent observations of radio-source angular broadening and pulsar dynamic spectra are reviewed, with the goal of determining the spectrum of the interstellar density irregularities and the sources which generate the turbulence. Measurements of angular broadening and certain aspects of pulsar dynamic spectra favor quasi-Kolmogorov density spectra, which are power-law with an index less than 4. However, pulsar dynamic spectra frequently display phenomena such as drifting bands or quasi-periodic structures which seem to require spectra with more power at long wavenumbers than can be supplied by quasi-Kolmogorov spectra.

Radioactivity observed in scintillation counters during the HEAO-1 mission

Results are reported from an analysis of radioactivity induced in the NaI medium-energy detector of the hard X-ray and low-energy gamma-ray experiment during the HEAO-1 satellite mission (1977-1978). Consideration is given to the instrument characteristics, the origin and variability of background, and the separation of cosmic-ray activity from the internal activity due to South Atlantic Anomaly trapped protons. Energy spectra and tables listing the nuclide identifications are provided.

Hybrid gas scintillation proportional counter/phoswich detector for hard X-ray astronomy

A concept is presented for a balloon-borne imaging hybrid proportional counter/phoswich detector of medium to hard X-rays. The phoswich would be optically coupled to the exit window of the proportional counter, and both detectors would use a common position-sensitive readout. It is anticipated that such a detector could combine the good energy and position resolution and excellent background rejection ability of the proportional counter for incident photon energies less than 100 keV with the extended response of the phoswich for higher energies. The phoswich could also be used to reject Compton scattering events in the proportional counter. This detector concept is studied using numerical simulations of a 400 sq cm square prototype detector. Results from this simulation indicate that current levels of proportional counter and phoswich performance are attainable at small cost in quantum efficiency, compared to a bare phoswich detector.

Scintillations of the Uranian kilometric radiation - Implications for the downstream magnetopause

Results are presented of the planetary radio astronomy observations conducted on board Voyager 2, with emphasis placed on the characteristics of the strong (3 to 6 dB) modulations of the broadband smooth Uranian radio emissions recorded from January 27-30, 1986, when the spacecraft was outbound from Uranus. The modulations were characterized by two superposed periods of about 100 sec and about 10 sec. It is suggested that the long-period modulation is due to the magnetopause surface waves, while the short-period modulations are due to the signature of ion cyclotron turbulence above the proton gyrofrequency, related to the magnetopause boundary layer.

Scintillating Fiber Technology for a High Neutron Spectrometer

Develop a compact low-power neutron spectrometer that uniquely identifies neutrons in the mixed radiation field expected on crewed deep-space missions. Secondary neutrons are generated by cosmic rays striking heavy crewed spacecraft as well as lunar and planetary surfaces1,2. It has been shown that secondary neutrons can account for up to 50% if the total dose-equivalent received by the crew.
