On May 2, 2019, a subcontractor to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) inadvertently breached a sealed Cs-137 source while attempting to remove the source for disposition as part of a United States (US) government-sponsored program. The source breach resulted in contamination of personnel, the building, and a release of material to the local environment.

This report describes a preliminary analysis on the utility of modern capabilities to localize radiological sources in marine environment. This study analyzed expected background sources and identified possible approaches based on modeling and simulation analyses. The effort culminated in the design and fabrication of validation experiments which provided favorable supporting data. The conclusions of this effort are not conclusive as to the viability of the approach nor is the underlining hypothesis discounted. Continuation of the experimental approach is recommended with a focus on open-water experimentation.
On July 16, 1945, at 5:29 a.m., a team of Los Alamos scientists successfully detonated the world’s first atomic bomb at a remote section of south-central New Mexico desert, then known as the Alamogordo Bombing Range. This full-scale test, dubbed “Trinity” by the Lab’s first Director J. Robert Oppenheimer, proved the viability of the implosion-type bomb known as The Gadget and ushered in the Atomic Age. Three weeks after Trinity, two Los-Alamos created atomic weapons – Little Boy and Fat Man – were released above Japan, helping to end World War II and changing the course of history forever.

In early 2019, Health Physics Services (HPS) personnel put together a test plan to use the shielded gamma-ray spectroscopy instruments in the Health Physics Services Technical Laboratory (HPSTL) to perform a series of measurements on laundered personal protective clothing used in radiological areas at the Savannah River Site (SRS). That test plan describes the methodology used to determine the quantities of laundry to be obtained from operational facilities, the methods for quality control checking the instruments throughout the measurement period, and the physical arrangement of samples in the counting shields. The test plan is documented in SRNS-J6700-2019-00037 (Reference 1).
