TRISO Particle Isolation and Graphite Removal Using SRNL Vapor Digestion Technology

Tri-structural isotropic fueled reactors are planned to come online in the next decade, but there is not currently a widely agreed upon disposition pathway for this new fuel stream. For long term used nuclear fuel storage, there would be a significant benefit if the waste volume could be reduced or mitigated. Most of the volume from used TRISO fuel contains graphite. SRNL currently has an active patent which describes one pathway to digest the graphite. One benefit in the utilization of this pathway is that multiple cylindrical pieces can be stacked end-to-end in a reaction tube, then nitric acid and water vapor can be flowed through the tube, and the weight change of the individual cores can provide both a reaction profile and overall oxidant use efficiency. The reaction of nitric acid and graphite passes through a series of intermediate products – NO 2 , NO, and N 2 O – from reaction and decomposition to eventually form N2. The data shows that NO2 grows in with increasing temperature between 500-600°C and then decreases by way of either reaction with graphite or decomposition. Nitric oxide, a reaction and thermal decomposition product of NO 2 , exhibits a consistent decline as a function of temperature, which is consistent with the literature. Similarly, the concentrations of N 2 O and N 2 increase as a function of temperature as their reactions with graphite become more favorable.

Literature Data on Foam Fracturing Fluid

At the beginning of this project, the Temple team spent significant effort to collect data relevant to foam fracturing. More than 40 articles/reports were found in the open literature that reported the properties of aqueous foams under various testing conditions. The foam properties included viscosity and stability in terms of half-life, while were influenced by the foam quality, shear rate, temperature, pressure, as well as surfactants and additives used in making the foam base solutions. As a result, more than 1100 data points were collected, which are included in a master worksheet named "Literature data on Foam Fracturing Fluid". These data points are organized based on following parameters: 1. Literature source, including authors and publication year 2. Gaseous phase (e.g. CO2, N2) 3. Liquid phase (e.g. tap water, DI water, salt water) 4. Surfactants and their concentrations 6. Additives 7. Foam quality 8. Pressure 9. Temperature 10. Viscosity 11. Foam stability, which was characterized by its half-life: Half-life Foam study data base with data analysis was completed and a webpage is designed hosted on public server at https://surfactant-dashboard.herokuapp.com

Co-catabolism of arginine and succinate drives symbiotic nitrogen fixation

Biological nitrogen fixation emerging from the symbiosis between bacteria and crop plants holds promise to increase the sustainability of agriculture. One of the biggest hurdles for the engineering of nitrogen-fixing organisms is an incomplete knowledge of metabolic interactions between microbe and plant. In contrast to the previously assumed supply of only succinate, we describe here the CATCH-N cycle as a novel metabolic pathway that co-catabolizes plant provided arginine and succinate to drive the energy-demanding process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in endosymbiotic rhizobia. Using systems biology, isotope labeling studies and transposon sequencing in conjunction with biochemical characterization, we uncovered highly redundant network components of the CATCH-N cycle including transaminases that interlink the co-catabolism of arginine and succinate. The CATCH-N cycle uses N2 as an additional sink for reductant and therefore delivers up to 25% higher yields of nitrogen than classical arginine catabolism—two alanines and three ammonium ions are secreted for each input of arginine and succinate. We argue that the CATCH-N cycle has evolved as part of a synergistic interaction to sustain bacterial metabolism in the microoxic and highly acid environment of symbiosomes. Thus, the CATCHN cycle entangles the metabolism of both partners to promote symbiosis. Our results provide a theoretical framework and metabolic blueprint for the rational design of plants and plant-associated organisms with new properties to improve nitrogen fixation.
