The sorption of argon, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen on two heat shield composites (SLA-561 and SLA-561V) and on the SLA components was measured over the pressure range of 0.001 to 760 torr and in the temperature range of 30 to 50 C. The sorption of the gases by both the composites and the components varied directly with pressure. The sorption of CO2 by the phenolic spheres and the silicone elastomer and of Ar by the silicone elastomer varied inversely with temperature. The mechanism involved in the gas sorption was primarily absorption.
High resolution photoelectron spectra recorded from molecular nitrogen and carbon monoxide with a fully calibrated energy analyzer at both the 736 and 744 A Ne I lines are presented. The relative intensities of all vibrational peaks appearing in each spectrum are given.
The results of solar radiation observations in the extreme ultra-violet spectrum from 200 A to 600 A made by the OSO-7 Satellite were studied. The results of the influence of attenuation by the atmosphere in the 250 to 500 km altitude range are presented. Using published molecular absorption cross-sections at 304 A and 256 A, the Jaccia atmospheric model is validated, and shows that a mean exospheric of 1050 K is appropriate for the sunset data.
A theory of electron-molecule scattering was developed which was a synthesis of close coupling and adiabatic-nuclei theories. The theory is shown to be a close coupling theory with respect to vibrational degrees of freedom but is a adiabatic-nuclei theory with respect to rotation. It can be applied to any number of partial waves required, and the remaining ones can be calculated purely in one or the other approximation. A theoretical criterion based on fixed-nuclei calculations and not on experiment can be given as to which partial waves and energy domains require the various approximations. The theory allows all cross sections (i.e., pure rotational, vibrational, simultaneous vibration-rotation, differential and total) to be calculated. Explicit formulae for all the cross sections are presented.

The possibility of using molecular nitrogen gas additive as an energy storage which in turn produces cesium ionization in advanced thermionic converter is first described theoretically. Experimental data confirmed for the first time such cesium ionization by vibrationally excited molecular nitrogen. Based on these experimental observations, the use of this scheme for the verification of validity of the recent Lam's theory and its application for the development of an advanced flowing thermionic converter are discussed.

Measurements of neutral nitrogen density from mass spectrometers on five satellites (AE-B, Ogo 6, San Marco 3, Aeros A, and AE-C) and neutral temperatures inferred from incoherent scatter measurements at four ground stations are combined to produce a model of thermospheric neutral temperatures and nitrogen densities similar to the Ogo 6 empirical model (Hedin et al., 1974). This global model is designated MSIS (mass spectrometer and incoherent scatter). The global average temperature, the annual temperature variation, lower bound density, and lower bound temperature are discussed. The data set covers the time period from the end of 1965 to mid-1975 and also a wide range of solar activities. Diurnal and semidiurnal variations in lower bound density and temperature are considered, as is magnetic activity.
