General approach to neutrino mass mechanisms with sterile neutrinos

We present a mathematical framework for constructing the most general neutrino mass matrices that yield the observed spectrum of light active neutrino masses in conjunction with arbitrarily many heavy sterile neutrinos, without the need to assume a hierarchy between Dirac and Majorana mass terms. The seesaw mechanism is a byproduct of the formalism, along with many other possibilities for generating tiny neutrino masses. We comment on phenomenological applications of this approach, in particular deriving a mechanism to address the long-standing ( g − 2 ) μ anomaly in the context of the left-right symmetric model. Machine learning techniques for intermediate mass gap lepton partner searches at the large hadron collider

We consider machine learning techniques associated with the application of a boosted decision tree (BDT) to searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for pair-produced lepton partners which decay to leptons and invisible particles. This scenario can arise in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), but can be realized in many other extensions of the Standard Model (SM). We focus on the case of intermediate mass splitting ( ∼ 30 GeV ) between the dark matter (DM) and the scalar. For these mass splittings, the LHC has made little improvement over LEP due to large electroweak backgrounds. We find that the use of machine learning techniques can push the LHC well past discovery sensitivity for a benchmark model with a lepton partner mass of ∼ 110 GeV , for an integrated luminosity of 300 fb − 1 , with a signal-to-background ratio of ∼ 0.3 . The LHC could exclude models with a lepton partner mass as large as ∼ 160 GeV with the same luminosity. The use of machine learning techniques in searches for scalar lepton partners at the LHC could thus definitively probe the parameter space of the MSSM in which scalar muon mediated interactions between SM muons and Majorana singlet DM can both deplete the relic density through dark matter annihilation and satisfy the recently measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We identify several machine learning techniques which can be useful in other LHC searches involving large and complex backgrounds. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model on a noisy quantum computer

Here we study the SYK model -- an important toy model for quantum gravity on IBM's superconducting qubit quantum computers. By using a graph-coloring algorithm to minimize the number of commuting clusters of terms in the qubitized Hamiltonian, we find the gate complexity of the time evolution using the first-order product formula for N Majorana fermions is $\mathscr{O}$(N 5 J 2 t 2 /ε) where J is the dimensionful coupling parameter, t is the evolution time, and ε is the desired precision. With this improved resource requirement, we perform the time evolution for N=6,8 with maximum two-qubit circuit depth of 343. We perform different error mitigation schemes on the noisy hardware results and find good agreement with the exact diagonalization results on classical computers and noiseless simulators. In particular, we compute return probability after time t and out-of-time order correlators (OTOC) which is a standard observable of quantifying the chaotic nature of quantum systems.

Lepton and baryon numbers as local gauge symmetries

A simple theory where the total lepton number is a local gauge symmetry is proposed. In this context, the gauge anomalies are canceled with the minimal number of extra fermionic fields and one predicts that the neutrinos are Majorana fermions. The properties of the neutrino sector are discussed, showing that this theory predicts a 3 + 2 light neutrino sector. We show that using the same fermionic fields one can gauge the baryon number and define a simple theory where the lepton and baryon numbers can be spontaneously broken at the low scale in agreement with experiments. Toward UV models of kinetic mixing and portal matter. VI. A more complex dark matter sector?

Portal matter (PM), having both Standard Model (SM) and dark sector charges, can induce kinetic mixing between the 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 dark photon and the SM gauge fields at the 1-loop level offering an attractive mechanism by which light (≲1 GeV) thermal dark matter (DM) can interact with visible matter and obtain its observed relic density. In doing so, if the DM is fermionic, the CMB and other astrophysical observations inform us that it must be Majorana/pseudo-Dirac in nature to avoid velocity/temperature-independent 𝑠-wave annihilation to SM final states. How does this idea fit into a more UV-complete picture also including the SM interactions? There are some reasons to believe that at least a first step along this path may not lie too far away in energy due to the renormalization group equations running of the dark gauge coupling, which for a significant range of parameters, becomes nonperturbative at/before the ∼10’s of TeV energy range. This implies that 𝑈⁢(1) 𝐷 must become embedded in an asymptotically free, non-Abelian group, 𝐺 𝐷 , before this can occur. The breaking of this larger group then produces the masses for the PM and the additional gauge fields associated with 𝐺 𝐷 then can lead to new interactions between the SM and the dark sector. Following several bottom-up approaches, we have examined a set of distinctive and testable phenomenological features associated with this general setup, based upon a number of simplifying assumptions. Clearly, it behooves us to explore the impact of these specific assumptions on these predictions for the array of possible experimental tests of this class of models. In most past analyses it has been assumed that DM is a vectorlike, complex singlet under the group 𝐺 𝐷 . If this assumption is relaxed, the dark sector must be augmented by additional fermion(s) and the associated scalar fields needed to break the gauge symmetries while generating the needed Majorana-like mass terms for the DM. In this paper, we analyze the simplest extension of this kind wherein the DM lies in a vectorlike doublet of 𝐺 𝐷 , which we take to have the structure 𝑆⁢𝑈⁢(2) 𝐼 ×𝑈⁢(1) 𝑌 𝐼 as in earlier work, leading to new phenomenological implications. We find, for example, that given the current LHC search constraints on the masses of heavy gauge bosons, the production of these new dark states with large rates is unlikely to occur at colliders unless they are produced singly in 𝑔⁡𝑔 fusion or their pair production cross sections are resonantly enhanced. Here, we also find that an additional mechanism arises to generate hierarchal neutrino masses in such a setup.

Insights from binary pulsars and laboratories into baryon number violation: Implications for GeV dark matter

Rare processes in laboratory and within astrophysical environments can be highly sensitive probes of baryon-number-violating interactions at the TeV scale. We demonstrate the power of neutron stars to constrain baryon-number violation by considering a minimal extension of the standard model involving a TeV-mass scalar mediator and a GeV scale Majorana fermion ψ . We find that a Δ B = 2 mass-loss process in binary pulsar systems via n → γ ψ and the subsequent scattering ψ n → π − K + places stringent constraints on the model parameter space. These limits will become much stronger, due to the possibility of Λ → γ ψ decays at the tree level, if the neutron star equation of state is hyperonic. We compare these constraints with ongoing and future collider experiments, n − n ¯ oscillations, and dinucleon decay searches at future large-scale neutrino experiments, finding that the binary pulsars bounds on couplings are significantly tighter for specific flavor combinations. Three-flavor collective neutrino oscillation simulations on a qubit quantum annealer

Neutrinos are unique among elementary particles in that their flavor-compositions oscillate over time. In extreme environments such as core-collapse supernovae, neutron-star mergers, and the early Universe, neutrinos are dense enough that their self-interactions significantly affect, if not dominate, these oscillations. This has implications for several phenomena within these environments, particularly nucleosynthesis. Simulations of these self-interactions have traditionally approximated neutrinos as having two flavors instead of the physical three. In order to develop techniques for characterizing the resulting quantum entanglement, I present the results of simulations of neutrino-neutrino interactions that include all three physical neutrino flavors and were performed on D-Wave Inc.’s Advantage 5000+ qubit quantum annealer. These results are checked against those from exact classical simulations, which are also used to compare the neutrino-neutrino interactions to neutrino-antineutrino and interactions between Majorana neutrinos, which are their own antiparticles. The D-Wave Advantage annealer is shown to be able to reproduce time evolution with the precision of a classical machine for small numbers of neutrinos and to do so without the Trotter errors present in most simulations of dynamics on quantum devices. Furthermore, it suffers from poor scaling in qubit-count with the number of neutrinos.

Probing lepton number violation at same-sign lepton colliders

Same-sign lepton colliders offer a promising environment to probe lepton number violation. We study processes that change lepton number by two units in the context of Majorana heavy neutral leptons and neutrinophilic scalars at μ TRISTAN , a proposed same-sign muon collider. Our work shows that such colliders, with modest energy and luminosity requirements, can either reveal direct evidence of lepton number violation or significantly constrain unexplored regions of parameter space, especially in the case of a neutrinophilic scalar. Connecting pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter with pseudo-Dirac neutrinos in a left-right symmetry model

Stringent constraints from the dark matter (DM) direct detection experiments can be naturally evaded for a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) DM. We propose a realization of pNGB DM in the context of a left-right symmetric model, wherein the neutrinos are pseudo-Dirac in nature. The Dirac mass term for neutrinos arises from two-loop quantum corrections, whereas the Majorana mass terms are generated from Planck-induced corrections. This class of model also provides a parity solution to the strong C P problem without the need for an axion. We show an interesting correlation between the lifetime of the DM and the mass-squared differences between active and sterile neutrinos while maintaining a solution to the strong C P problem. Unhinging the Surfaces of Higher-Order Topological Insulators and Superconductors

Here, we show that the chiral Dirac and Majorana hinge modes in three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) and superconductors (HOTSCs) can be gapped while preserving the protecting C$_{2n}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry upon the introduction of non-Abelian surface topological order. In both cases, the topological order on a single side surface breaks time-reversal symmetry, but appears with its time-reversal conjugate on alternating sides in a C$_{2n}\mathcal{T}$ preserving pattern. In the absence of the HOTI/HOTSC bulk, such a pattern necessarily involves gapless chiral modes on hinges between C$_{2n}\mathcal{T}$-conjugate domains. However, using a combination of K -matrix and anyon condensation arguments, we show that on the boundary of a 3D HOTI/HOTSC these topological orders are fully gapped and hence “anomalous.” Our results suggest that new patterns of surface and hinge states can be engineered by selectively introducing topological order only on specific surfaces.

Detection of Hole Pockets in the Candidate Type-II Weyl Semimetal MoTe 2 from Shubnikov-de Haas Quantum Oscillations

We report the bulk electronic structure of T d -MoTe 2 features large hole Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone center (Γ) and two electron Fermi surfaces along the Γ-X direction. However, the large hole pockets, whose existence has important implications for the Weyl physics of T d -MoTe 2 , has never been conclusively detected in quantum oscillations. This raises doubt about the realizability of Majorana states in T d -MoTe 2 , because these exotic states rely on the existence of Weyl points, which originated from the same band structure predicted by density functional theory (DFT). Here, we report an unambiguous detection of these elusive hole pockets via Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. At ambient pressure, the quantum oscillation frequencies for these pockets are 988 and 1513 T, when the magnetic field is applied along the c axis. The quasiparticle effective masses m* associated with these frequencies are 1.50 and 2.77 m e , respectively, indicating the importance of Coulomb interactions in this system. We further measure the SdH oscillations under pressure. At 13 kbar, we detected a peak at 1798 T with m* = 2.86 m e . Relative to the oscillation data at a lower pressure, the amplitude of this peak experienced an enhancement, which can be attributed to the reduced curvature of the hole pockets under pressure. Combining our experimental data with DFT +U calculations, where U is the Hubbard parameter, our results shed light on why these important hole pockets have not been detected until now.

Helical Edge States and Quantum Phase Transitions in Tetralayer Graphene

Helical conductors with spin-momentum locking are promising platforms for Majorana fermions. Here we report observation of two topologically distinct phases supporting helical edge states in charge neutral Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene in Hall bar and Corbino geometries. As the magnetic field B ⊥ and out-of-plane displacement field D are varied, we observe a phase diagram consisting of an insulating phase and two metallic phases, with 0, 1, and 2 helical edge states, respectively. These phases are accounted for by a theoretical model that relates their conductance to spin-polarization plateaus. Transitions between them arise from a competition among interlayer hopping, electrostatic and exchange interaction energies. Finally, our work highlights the complex competing symmetries and the rich quantum phases in few-layer graphene.

Incommensurate Spin Fluctuations in the Spin-Triplet Superconductor Candidate UTe 2

Spin-triplet superconductors are of extensive current interest because they can host topological state and Majorana fermions important for quantum computation. The uranium-based heavy-fermion superconductor UTe 2 has been argued as a spin-triplet superconductor similar to UGe2, URhGe, and UCoGe, where the superconducting phase is near (or coexists with) a ferromagnetic (FM) instability and spin-triplet electron pairing is driven by FM spin fluctuations. Here we use neutron scattering to show that, although UTe 2 exhibits no static magnetic order down to 0.3 K, its magnetism in the [0,K,L] plane is dominated by incommensurate spin fluctuations near an antiferromagnetic ordering wave vector and extends to at least 2.6 meV. We are able to understand the dominant incommensurate spin fluctuations of UTe 2 in terms of its electronic structure calculated using a combined density-functional and dynamic mean-field theory.

Toward Complete Leading-Order Predictions for Neutrinoless Double β Decay

The amplitude for the neutrinoless double β (0νββ) decay of the two-neutron system nn → ppe – e – constitutes a key building block for nuclear-structure calculations of heavy nuclei employed in large-scale 0νββ searches. Assuming that the 0νββ process is mediated by a light-Majorana-neutrino exchange, a systematic analysis in chiral effective field theory shows that already at leading order a contact operator is required to ensure renormalizability. Here, we develop a method to estimate the numerical value of its coefficient (in analogy to the Cottingham formula for electromagnetic contributions to hadron masses) and validate the result by reproducing the charge-independence-breaking contribution to the nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths. Our central result, while derived in dimensional regularization, is given in terms of the renormalized amplitude Aν(|p|, |p'|) , matching to which will allow one to determine the contact-term contribution in regularization schemes employed in nuclear-structure calculations. Our results thus greatly reduce a crucial uncertainty in the interpretation of searches for 0νββ decay.

Ab Initio Calculation of the Contact Operator Contribution in the Standard Mechanism for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Starting from chiral nuclear interactions, we evaluate the contribution of the leading-order contact transition operator to the nuclear matrix element (NME) of neutrinoless double-beta decay, assuming a light Majorana neutrino-exchange mechanism. The corresponding low-energy constant (LEC) is determined by fitting the transition amplitude of the nn → ppe – e – process to a recently proposed synthetic datum. We examine the dependence of the amplitude on similarity renormalization group (SRG) scale and chiral expansion order of the nuclear interaction, finding that both dependences can be compensated to a large extent by readjusting the LEC. We evaluate the contribution of both the leading-order contact operator and standard long-range operator to the neutrinoless double-beta decays in the light nuclei 6,8 He and the candidate nucleus 48 Ca. Furthermore, our results provide the first clear demonstration that the contact term enhances the NME by 43(7)% in 48 Ca, where the uncertainty is propagated from the synthetic datum.

Effective Model for Fractional Topological Corner Modes in Quasicrystals

High-order topological insulators (HOTIs), as generalized from topological crystalline insulators, are characterized with lower-dimensional metallic boundary states protected by spatial symmetries of a crystal, whose theoretical framework based on band inversion at special k points cannot be readily extended to quasicrystals because quasicrystals contain rotational symmetries that are not compatible with crystals, and momentum is no longer a good quantum number. In this work, we develop a low-energy effective model underlying HOTI states in 2D quasicrystals for all possible rotational symmetries. By implementing a novel Fourier transform developed recently for quasicrystals and approximating the long-wavelength behavior by their large-scale average, we construct an effective k · p Hamiltonian to capture the band inversion at the center of a pseudo-Brillouin zone. We show that an in-plane Zeeman field can induce mass kinks at the intersection of adjacent edges of a 2D quasicrystal topological insulators and generate corner modes (CMs) with fractional charge, protected by rotational symmetries. Our model predictions are confirmed by numerical tight-binding calculations. Furthermore, when the quasicrystal is proximitized by an s-wave superconductor, Majorana CMs can also be created by tuning the field strength and chemical potential. Our work affords a generic approach to studying the low-energy physics of quasicrystals, in association with topological excitations and fractional statistics.

Quantum Phase Diagram and Spontaneously Emergent Topological Chiral Superconductivity in Doped Triangular-Lattice Mott Insulators

The topological superconducting state is a highly sought-after quantum state hosting topological order and Majorana excitations. Here, in this Letter, we explore the mechanism to realize the topological superconductivity (TSC) in the doped Mott insulators with time-reversal symmetry (TRS). Through large-scale density matrix renormalization group study of an extended triangular-lattice t–J model on the six- and eight-leg cylinders, we identify a d + id-wave chiral TSC with spontaneous TRS breaking, which is characterized by a Chern number C=2 and quasi-long-range superconducting order. We map out the quantum phase diagram with by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping and spin interaction. In the weaker NNN-coupling regime, we identify a pseudogaplike phase with a charge stripe order coexisting with fluctuating superconductivity, which can be tuned into d -wave superconductivity by increasing the doping level and system width. The TSC emerges in the intermediate-coupling regime, which has a transition to a d-wave superconducting phase with larger NNN couplings. The emergence of the TSC is driven by geometrical frustrations and hole dynamics which suppress spin correlation and charge order, leading to a topological quantum phase transition.

Sixfold Way of Traversable Wormholes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

In the infrared limit, a nearly anti–de Sitter spacetime in two dimensions ( AdS 2 ) perturbed by a weak double trace deformation and a two-site ( q > 2 )-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with N Majoranas and a weak 2 r -body intersite coupling share the same near-conformal dynamics described by a traversable wormhole. We exploit this relation to propose a symmetry classification of traversable wormholes depending on N , q , and r , with q > 2 r , and confirm it by a level statistics analysis using exact diagonalization techniques. Intriguingly, a time-reversed state never results in a new state, so only six universality classes occur—A, AI, BDI, CI, C, and D—and different symmetry sectors of the model may belong to distinct universality classes.
