Quantifying Energy Justice Goals in the Power Sector: Developing and Using Metrics

New policy goals are explicitly guiding the future grid toward greater energy equity. At the same time, policy goals also guide the grid toward decarbonization and resilience, while maintaining cost, security, and reliability cornerstone requirements. In conclusion, these pressures create a dilemma: moving urgently to address climate change and respond to energy disruptions, but also slowly to engage communities on the climate frontlines in earnest.

Crossover Flux and Ionic Resistance Metrics in Polysulfide-Permanganate Redox Flow Battery Membranes

A survey of 23 commercially available cation exchange membranes was performed for the downselection of membranes for use in a polysulfide-permanganate redox flow battery (pS-Mn RFB). The survey measured the flux of permanganate ions across a 0.1 mol L −1 concentration gradient as well as the membrane resistance in a 0.5 mol L −1 sodium chloride solution. The membranes exhibited the characteristic flux/resistance trade-off observed in most classes of membranes. To connect the individual membrane testing to how the membranes will perform in a device, cell performance data in a pS-Mn RFB was collected for three membranes from the survey. The coulombic, voltaic, and energy efficiency at low cycle counts aligned with the predictions from the membrane flux and resistance survey results. The study also identified three membranes—Fumapem F-930-RFS, Fumapem FS-715-RFS, and Aquivion E98-09S—that outperformed most other membranes regarding their position on the flux-resistance trade-off curve, indicating them to be good candidates for further testing.

Identifying Critical Electrode Metrics for Efficient, Selective CO 2 Electrochemical Conversion

Low-temperature electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R) in zero-gap membrane electrode assembly (MEA) reactors presents a scalable route to fuels and carbon utilization. However, performance at industrially relevant current densities hinges on mesoscale catalyst layer integration, particularly at the ionomer|catalyst interface. Here, we demonstrate a generalizable in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) method. We utilize this technique to decouple electrode-level parameters that are correlated to the overall MEA performance. By performing this ex situ EIS method on CO 2 -to-CO catalyst-coated membranes with systematically varied ionomer-to-catalyst (I:C) ratios, we reveal a pronounced dependence of performance, ion transport resistance, and catalyst utilization on the I:C ratio as well as the electrode conditioning. We demonstrate that an optimal I:C ratio exists at which ion transport resistance is minimized and Faradaic efficiency for CO production is maximized. Beyond the electrodes examined, here we compare ion transport resistance to MEA selectivity/Faradaic efficiency obtained in prior studies, revealing a clear correlation between the two. These results suggest that ion transport resistance within the catalyst layer may be a quantitative predictor of MEA performance which underscores the importance of mesoscale integration in achieving scalable CO 2 R technologies.

Cumulative $\chi^2$ Metric for VALID for ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 in SCALE 6.3b9

Nuclear data testing is generally performed in a manner similar to validation: a series of critical benchmark experiments is modeled, and the differences between calculated and expected results are examined to understand the performance of a code and cross section set. This process is repeated for multiple sets of experiments with different transport codes and sometimes with different datasets. Occasionally, data processing differences are also important in understanding the differences in calculated results. Relevant experts then meet periodically to compare results and set priorities for improvement in the next round of data updates. This process has been largely effective, despite the confounding factors of different benchmark sets, application areas, sponsors, nationalities, and the resulting different priorities.
