Large-Scale High-Resolution Coastal Mangrove Forests Mapping Across West Africa With Machine Learning Ensemble and Satellite Big Data

Coastal mangrove forests provide important ecosystem goods and services, including carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and hazard mitigation. However, they are being destroyed at an alarming rate by human activities. To characterize mangrove forest changes, evaluate their impacts, and support relevant protection and restoration decision making, accurate and up-to-date mangrove extent mapping at large spatial scales is essential. Available large-scale mangrove extent data products use a single machine learning method commonly with 30 m Landsat imagery, and significant inconsistencies remain among these data products. With huge amounts of satellite data involved and the heterogeneity of land surface characteristics across large geographic areas, finding the most suitable method for large-scale high-resolution mangrove mapping is a challenge. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of a machine learning ensemble for mangrove forest mapping at 20 m spatial resolution across West Africa using Sentinel-2 (optical) and Sentinel-1 (radar) imagery. The machine learning ensemble integrates three commonly used machine learning methods in land cover and land use mapping, including Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), and Neural Network (NN). The cloud-based big geospatial data processing platform Google Earth Engine (GEE) was used for pre-processing Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 data. Extensive validation has demonstrated that the machine learning ensemble can generate mangrove extent maps at high accuracies for all study regions in West Africa (92%–99% Producer’s Accuracy, 98%–100% User’s Accuracy, 95%–99% Overall Accuracy). This is the first-time that mangrove extent has been mapped at a 20 m spatial resolution across West Africa. The machine learning ensemble has the potential to be applied to other regions of the world and is therefore capable of producing high-resolution mangrove extent maps at global scales periodically.

A bibliographical surveys of large-scale systems

A limited, partly annotated bibliography was prepared on the subject of large-scale system control. Approximately 400 references are divided into thirteen application areas, such as large societal systems and large communication systems. A first-author index is provided.

Study of large-scale mixing in developing wakes behind streamlined bodies

Heat-tagging and conditional sampling techniques were used to study the large scale mixing process in the developing wake behind a streamlined body. The results were used to understand the manner in which the large eddy length scale evolves from a value appropriate to a boundary layer to that appropriate to the asymptotic far-wake.

Large scale photospheric magnetic field: The diffusion of active region fields

The large-scale phototospheric magnetic field was computed by allowing observed active region fields to diffuse and to be sheared by differential rotation in accordance with the Leighton (1969) magneto-kinematic model of the solar cycle. The differential rotation of the computed field patterns as determined by autocorrelation curves is similar to that of the observed photospheric field, and poleward of 20 deg. latitude both are significantly different from the differential rotation of the long-lived sunspots (Newton and Nunn, 1951) used as an input into the computations.

On stability of large-scale systems under structural perturbations.

The concept of connective stability of large-scale systems is widened to include arbitrary structural perturbations. Conditions for this broader kind of connective stability are derived by developing 'connective' versions of both the linear and the nonlinear comparison principles.

Large scale 20mm photography for range resources analysis in the Western United States

Large scale 70mm aerial photography is a valuable supplementary tool for rangeland studies. A wide assortment of applications were developed varying from vegetation mapping to assessing environmental impact on rangelands. Color and color infrared stereo pairs are useful for effectively sampling sites limited by ground accessibility. They allow an increased sample size at similar or lower cost than ground sampling techniques and provide a permanent record.

An observational search for large-scale organization of five-minute oscillations on the sun

The large-scale solar velocity field has been measured over an aperture of radius 0.8 solar radii on 121 days between April and September, 1976. Measurements are made in the line Fe I 5123.730 A, employing a velocity subtraction technique similar to that of Severny et al. (1976). Comparisons of the amplitude and frequency of the five-minute resonant oscillation with the geomagnetic C9 index and magnetic sector boundaries show no evidence of any relationship between the oscillations and coronal holes or sector structure.

Motions of the cloud medium behind large scale galactic shocks

Mechanisms of decelerating the cloud medium in the large-scale galactic shock are studied. It is shown that the process of cloud-cloud collisions, which results in diffusive momentum transport and hence gives rise to the turbulent viscosity, is very effective in slowing down the cloud medium so that the postshock velocity of the intercloud medium can be matched within a short distance behind the shock front. The drag force exerted by the slow-moving intercloud medium alone is simply not enough to effectively decelerate the cloud medium in the shock. By the use of the results of Shu et al (1972), the internal structure of the shock of the cloud medium is analyzed by including turbulent viscous effects. The thickness of the shock is found to be on the order of 100 pc if the turbulent viscosity is taken proportional to the mean free path of the cloud-cloud collisions. The phase transition takes place in an even thinner layer on the order of 10 pc immediately after the viscous shock front of the intercloud medium.

Large-scale anisotropy at centimeter wavelengths

Intrinsic effects in the case of large-scale anisotropy measurements could possibly provide much information about the early universe. Techniques for experimental investigations at centimeter wavelengths are discussed, taking into account the basic problem to measure the difference in the radiation temperature form two directions in the sky with an accuracy of better than 0.0001 K. The largest anisotropy in the 2.7 K background radiation is a dipole distribution, most of which is due to the sun's velocity with respect to the radiation frame. It is pointed out that two very recent results how good agreement with older dipole data. A cooled 3 mm mixer radiometer and a 1.2 cm maser radiometer were flown in balloon. The results of a search for evidence of a quadrupole distribution in the 2.7 K radiation are also reported.

Investigation of Satellite Measurements in the Presence of Clouds, Forcing Influences on Clouds and Feedback to the Large Scale Following Convection

Satellite measurements during cloudy conditions, forces influencing clouds and large scale feedback following convection were investigated. The following conditions were studied: (1) passing marked thermal features aloft near the northern Bay of Bengal at the time of formation of the July 1979 monsoon depression; (2) recognition of regions of dense high overcast clouds in satellite radiances; (3) evolution of monsoon cloud systems and controlling factors on the clouds, and the effects of the clouds on thermodynamic and wind structures for improvements for numerical models are suggested.

Large scale structural synthesis

A general purpose optimization program is coupled to a large scale finite element program to provide an efficient tool for structural synthesis. The resulting interface program may be used to design structures for minimum weight, subject to constraints on stress, displacement, and vibration frequencies. A variety of state-of-the-art techniques are employed, including design variable linking, constraint deletion, reciprocal variables, and formal approximations. The capability is demonstrated with the design of a gear housing using 30 design variables and over 5000 nonlinear inequality constraints. The finite element model consists of over 1600 elements and 7000 displacement degrees of freedom. The design required six detailed finite element analyses and approximately one hour on a Cray-1s supercomputer. It is concluded that structures of practical size and complexity can be efficiently designed using numerical optimization.
