Laser velocimeter measurements of high-speed compressible flows

Laser velocimeter results were compared and found to be consistent with those obtained with conventional measurement techniques and existing compressible boundary layer theory. Turbulence information at supersonic speed has been successfully obtained in compressible boundary layer with laser system.

Radiative transfer in the surfaces of atmosphereless bodies. III - Interpretation of lunar photometry

Narrowband and UBV photoelectric phase curves of the entire lunar disk and surface photometry of some craters have been interpreted using a newly developed generalized radiative transfer theory for planetary regoliths. The data are well fitted by the theory, yielding information on both macroscopic and microscopic lunar properties. Derived values for the integrated disk geometric albedo are considerably higher than quoted previously, because of the present inclusion of an accurately determined opposition effect. The mean surface roughness, defined as the ratio of the height to the radius of a typical irregularity, is found to be 0.9 + or - 0.1, or somewhat less than the mean value of 1.2 obtained for the asteroids. From the phase curves, wavelength-dependent values of the single scattering albedo and the Henyey-Greenstein asymmetry factor for the average surface particle are derived.

General aviation's meteorological requirements

Communication of weather theory and information about weather service products to pilots in an accurate and comprehensible manner is essential to flying safety in general. Probably no one needs weather knowledge more than the people who fly through it. The specific subject of this overview is General Aviation's Meteorological Requirements.

Asteroid family identifications and proper elements

This paper lists proper elements and family memberships for the first 2065 numbered asteroids plus 20 higher numbered objects. All proper elements were calculated using the Williams (1969) theory. The information contained in the 13 columns of the table is discussed in detail. It is noted that the proper elements and family assignments for the first 1796 numbered objects are mostly identical to those reported previously by Williams (1979). However, proper elements were recalculated for 68 objects in the earlier list, and entries were made for asteroids omitted from that list. Family identifications have changed for several objects as a result of the improvement of the osculating elements and a recalculation of the proper elements of asteroids which formerly had poor orbits.

Optimal realizable filters and the minimum Euclidean distance principle

Minimizing a Euclidean distance in the complex plane optimizes a wide class of correlation metrics for filters implemented on realistic devices. The algorithm searches over no more than two real scalars (gain and phase). It unifies a variety of previous solutions for special cases (e.g., a maximum signal-to-noise ratio with colored noise and a real filter and a maximum correlation intensity with no noise and a coupled filter). It extends optimal partial information filter theory to arbitrary spatial light modulators (fully complex, coupled, discrete, finite contrast ratio, and so forth), additive input noise (white or colored), spatially nonuniform filter modulators, and additive correlation detection noise (including signal dependent noise).

Conceptual Coordination Bridges Information Processing and Neurophysiology

Information processing theories of memory and skills can be reformulated in terms of how categories are physically and temporally related, a process called conceptual coordination. Dreaming can then be understood as a story understanding process in which two mechanisms found in everyday comprehension are missing: conceiving sequences (chunking categories in time as a categorization) and coordinating across modalities (e.g., relating the sound of a word and the image of its meaning). On this basis, we can readily identify isomorphisms between dream phenomenology and neurophysiology, and explain the function of dreaming as facilitating future coordination of sequential, cross-modal categorization (i.e., REM sleep lowers activation thresholds, "unlearning").
