On stochastic control system design methods for weakly coupled large scale linear systems.

This paper considers the problem of decentralized control of two weakly coupled linear stochastic systems, using quadratic performance indices. The basic idea is to have each controller control independently his own system, based upon noisy measurements of his own output. To compensate for the effects of weak coupling upon the resultant performance, fake white plant noise is introduced to each system. The appropriate intensity of the fake plant noise is obtained through the solution of an off-line deterministic matrix optimal control problem. The effects of this design method upon the overall coupled system performance are analyzed as a function of the degree of intersystem coupling.

Collision strengths for the intercombination lines of S III

The collision strengths of intercombination lines of S III ions observed in the Io torus are calculated on the basis of data gathered by Voyager instruments, the IUE and the Faint Object Telescope. The doubly ionized ions are excited by electron impacts and move from the 3P2P(3) ground state to excited 3s3P3(1)PO, (1)DO, 3p3d(1)PO, and 3p4s(1)PO states. Excitational cross sections are calculated with a two-state close-coupling approximation for the energy range up to 1,000,000 K, with target states being represented by multiconfiguration interaction wave functions. The close-coupling approximation regarded as an accurate technique because of the dominance of the Coulomb factor in the ionized state. The wave function calculations are estimated to yield values accurate to within 30 percent. Further work is need to quantify the magnitude of error introduced by resonance contributions to the collision strengths.

Partition function corrections

The vibration-rotation interaction coupling in diatomic molecules is analyzed and first-order expressions for the energy levels are deduced. Corrections to the partition function to account for this coupling are derived. The effects of long-range intermolecular forces due to induced dipole-induced dipole interactions, dipole-induced dipole interactions, charge-dipole interactions, and charge-charge interactions are considered. London's quantized oscillator model of the induced dipole-induced dipole interaction is developed. The partition function including effects of such dispersion forces is derived and is shown to lead to the virial equation of state. For a model combining the hard sphere and long-range attractive type potentials, this is found to lead to the van der Waals equation of state. The equation of state near the critical point is presented in reduced form (thermodynamic variables expressed in units of critical point values). Finally, approximate corrections to the electronic partition functions are derived to account for perturbations of excited electronic states induced by neighboring neutral particles, heavy ions, and fast electron collisions.

Magnetoelectric Coupling in a Mn 4 Na–Organic Complex under Pulsed Magnetic Fields up to 73 T

Research on the magnetoelectric (ME) effect (or spin-electric coupling) in molecule-based magnetic materials is a relatively nascent but promising topic. Molecule-based magnetic materials have diverse magnetic functionalities that can be coupled to electrical properties. Here, in this study, we investigate a realization of ME coupling that is fundamental but not heavily studied─the coupling of magnetic spin level crossings to changes in electric polarization. A mixed-valence Mn 4 Na complex with a total ground-state spin S = 5/2 under zero magnetic field and S = 17/2 under high magnetic field undergoes a cascade of ground-state level crossings of the S z states with increasing magnetic field. Magnetization and electrical polarization measurements under pulsed magnetic fields up to 73 T show that each spin level crossing is accompanied by a significant change in electric polarization that is an even function of the applied magnetic field. A molecular Hamiltonian describing antiferromagnetic exchange in a distorted tetrahedron of three Mn III and one Mn II ions matches the data well. We conclude that the ME coupling is caused by magnetostriction within the polar molecule as it distorts to lower its magnetic exchange energy.

Radical Coupling Reactions of Hydroxystilbene Glucosides and Coniferyl Alcohol: A Density Functional Theory Study

The monolignols, p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohol, arise from the general phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway. Increasingly, however, authentic lignin monomers derived from outside this process are being identified and found to be fully incorporated into the lignin polymer. Among them, hydroxystilbene glucosides, which are produced through a hybrid process that combines the phenylpropanoid and acetate/malonate pathways, have been experimentally detected in the bark lignin of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Several interunit linkages have been identified and proposed to occur through homo-coupling of the hydroxystilbene glucosides and their cross-coupling with coniferyl alcohol. In the current work, the thermodynamics of these coupling modes and subsequent rearomatization reactions have been evaluated by the application of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The objective of this paper is to determine favorable coupling and cross-coupling modes to help explain the experimental observations and attempt to predict other favorable pathways that might be further elucidated via in vitro polymerization aided by synthetic models and detailed structural studies.

Measurement of $\mathrm{t\bar t}$ normalised multi-differential cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt s=13$ TeV, and simultaneous determination of the strong coupling strength, top quark pole mass, and parton distribution functions

Normalised multi-differential cross sections for top quark pair ($\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The analysed data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The double-differential $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the top quark and of the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ system at parton level in the full phase space. A triple-differential measurement is performed as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ system and the multiplicity of additional jets at particle level. The data are compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement next-to-leading-order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations with parton showers. Together with a fixed-order NLO QCD calculation, the triple-differential measurement is used to extract values of the strong coupling strength $\alpha_S$ and the top quark pole mass ($m_\mathrm{T}^\text{pole}$) using several sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs). Furthermore, a simultaneous fit of the PDFs, $\alpha_S$, and $m_\mathrm{T}^\text{pole}$ is performed at NLO, demonstrating that the new data have significant impact on the gluon PDF, and at the same time allow an accurate determination of $\alpha_S$ and $m_\mathrm{T}^\text{pole}$.

Entanglement in massive Schwinger model at finite temperature and density

We evaluate the entanglement entropy and entropic function of massive two dimensional quantum electrodynamics (Schwinger model) at finite temperature, density, and θ -angle. In the strong coupling regime, the entropic function is dominated by the boson mass for large spatial intervals, and reduces to the conformal field theory result for small spatial intervals. We also discuss the entanglement spectrum at finite temperature and a finite θ -angle. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Trimeron-phonon coupling in magnetite

Using density functional theory, we study the lattice dynamical properties of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) in the high-temperature cubic and low-temperature monoclinic phases. The calculated phonon dispersion curves and density of states are compared with the available experimental data obtained by inelastic neutron, inelastic x-ray, and nuclear inelastic scattering. We find a very good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results for the monoclinic Cc structure revealing the strong coupling between the charge-orbital (trimeron) order and specific phonon modes. For the cubic phase, clear discrepancies arise due to fluctuation effects, which are not included in the calculation method. Despite this shortcoming, we argue that the main spectral features can be understood assuming that the strong trimeron-phonon coupling is extended above the Verwey transition, with lattice dynamics influenced by the short-range order instead of the average cubic structure. Our results indicate the validity of trimerons (and trimeron-phonon coupling) to explain the physics of magnetite much beyond their original formulation.

Life testing of a nine-couple hybrid thermoelectric panel

Life test data are presented for a nine couple thermoelectric panel of hybrid couples tested at an average hot junction temperature of 840 C (1113 K). In the hybrid couple, a hollow cylinder of p-type Si-Ge is used to encapsulate a segmented PbTe/Si-Ge n-leg. The output power and internal resistance of the panel as well as the resistances of the individual hybrid couples are presented as functions of test time covering a period of more than 4200 hours. Test results indicated improved stability relative to hybrid couples tested at higher temperatures. Thermal cycling of the panel resulted in an order of magnitude increase in room temperature resistance. However, very little change in resistance at operating temperatures was noted following the thermal cycles.

Composite propellant combustion modeling studies

A review is presented of theoretical and experimental studies of composite propellant combustion. The theoretical investigations include a model of the combustion of a nonmetallized ammonium perchlorate (AP) propellant (noting time scales for vapor-phase combustion and the condensed phase) and response functions in pressure-coupled oscillations. The experimental studies are discussed with reference to scale-modeling apparatus, flame standoff distance versus velocity as a function of pressure, and results from T-burner firings of a nonmetallized AP/polysulfide propellant. Research applications including problems with nitramine propellants, the feasibility of stop-restart rockets with salt quench, and combustion problems in large boosters are outlined.

Quantum phase transitions and band mixing in 135 Ba

Quantum phase transitions and band-mixing phenomena are considered within the framework of a two-state boson–fermion model for the odd-mass 135 Ba nucleus. Here, the purpose of the study is to further explore the nature of the interplay between these modalities within the framework of an even–even boson core described by an IBM Hamiltonian coupled to a j = 3/2 fermion as a function of the strength of the coupling constant that links the boson and fermion pictures. The results show that excitation energies and the known E2 strengths of 135 Ba are sensitive to the strength of the coupling constant, with a best fit to known experimental results yielding results that lie close to those of the recently proposed E(5/4) model.

Beam Energy Dependence of the Linear and Mode-Coupled Flow Harmonics Using the a Multi-Phase Transport Model

In the framework of the A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, the multi-particle azimuthal cumulant method is used to calculate the linear and mode-coupled contributions to the quadrangular flow harmonic (v4) and the mode-coupled response coefficient as functions of centrality in Au+Au collisions at sNN = 200, 39, 27 and 19.6 GeV. This study indicates that the linear and mode-coupled contributions to v4 are sensitive to beam energy change. Nevertheless, the correlations between different-order flow symmetry planes and the mode-coupled response coefficients show weak beam energy dependence. In addition, the presented results suggest that the experimental measurements that span a broad range of beam energies can be an additional constraint for the theoretical model calculations.
