Exploratory development and services for preparing and examining ultrathin polished sections of lunar rocks and particulates, part 2

General principles and details of the actual procedure are presented for the preparator. Some background information is given on why certain lapping, polishing, and gluing procedures are needed. It is directed toward the innovative preparator who wishes to further refine procedures or to use some of his own techniques for some steps in the processing sequence. Specific details on the single procedure found to be most successful for lunar dense rocks, breccias, and particulates are outlined. A complete listing of equipment and supplies is appended.

Exploratory development and services for preparing and examining ultrathin polished sections of lunar rocks and particulates, part 1

Development of improved procedures is reported for three classes of lunar materials: dense rocks, breccias, and particulates. High quality ultrathin sections of these materials are obtained. Lists of equipment and supplies, procedures, photomicrographic documentation, and training are provided. Advantages of ultrathin polished sections for conventional and unconventional optical microscopy methods are described. Recommendations are provided for use of ultrathin sections in lunar rock studies, for further refinement of ultrathinning procedures, and for additional training efforts to establish a capability at the Manned Space Center. For Part 2, See N72-50754.

Examination of the Surveyor 3 surface sampler scoop

The operation and external appearance of the surface sampling scoop are discussed. An attempt was made to measure the magnitude of the existing adhesion between the lunar soil and the various surfaces of the scoop.

Examination of the collision force method for analyzing the responses of simple containment/deflection structures to impact by one engine rotor blade fragment

An approximate collision analysis, termed the collision-force method, was developed for studying impact-interaction of an engine rotor blade fragment with an initially circular containment ring. This collision analysis utilizes basic mass, material property, geometry, and pre-impact velocity information for the fragment, together with any one of three postulated patterns of blade deformation behavior: (1) the elastic straight blade model, (2) the elastic-plastic straight shortening blade model, and (3) the elastic-plastic curling blade model. The collision-induced forces are used to predict the resulting motions of both the blade fragment and the containment ring. Containment ring transient responses are predicted by a finite element computer code which accommodates the large deformation, elastic-plastic planar deformation behavior of simple structures such as beams and/or rings. The effects of varying the values of certain parameters in each blade-behavior model were studied. Comparisons of predictions with experimental data indicate that of the three postulated blade-behavior models, the elastic-plastic curling blade model appears to be the most plausible and satisfactory for predicting the impact-induced motions of a ductile engine rotor blade and a containment ring against which the blade impacts.

Examination of two methods of describing the thermodynamic properties of oxygen near the critical point

A computer study was conducted to compare the numerical behavior of two approaches to describing the thermodynamic properties of oxygen near the critical point. Data on the relative differences between values of specific heats at constant pressure (sub p) density, and isotherm and isochor derivatives of the equation of state are presented for selected supercritical pressures at temperatures in the range 100 to 300 K. The results of a more detailed study of the sub p representations afforded by the two methods are also presented.

Luna 16 - An opaque mineral study and a systematic examination of compositional variations of spinels from Mare Fecunditatis.

The opaque mineralogy of the Luna 16 soil sample is studied, with an emphasis on a detailed survey of the compositional variations of the Fe-Ti-Cr-Al-Mg spinels. Analytical data are also presented for ilmenite. Textural characteristics and shock-metamorphic effects on the opaque minerals are briefly described and comparisons are made throughout between the Luna 16 samples and published and unpublished data on the Apollo samples.

A re-examination of relationships among pyroxene-plagioclase achondrites.

In light of the new data of Jerome (1970), a brief discussion of genetic relationships between eucrites, howardites and diogenites is presented. Howardites are not direct products of magmatic crystallization, as has sometimes been postulated, but instead are interpreted as polymict breccias resulting from the mechanical mixture of eucrites and diogenites. Testing of this model by means of chemical arguments is made complicated however by the probable presence of a chondritic component in howardites and by a sequence analogous to terrestrial differentiation series, among the eucrites themselves.

Examination of the influence of coatings on thin superalloy sections

The effects of two coatings, Codep B-1 and CoCrAlY, with and without simulated engine exposures at 982 C (1800 F) and 1093 C (2000 F), were evaluated on cast sections of Rene 80. Section thicknesses were from 0.075 cm (0.030 inch) to 0.15 cm (0.060 inch). Tensile and stress rupture properties, mechanical fatigue, thermal fatigue, ballistic impact and hot corrosion at R. T. and elevated temperatures were investigated. Thin sections generally had poorer tensile strengths and lower stress rupture lives than standard 1/4 inch round gage bars. The coatings, as-applied, had little effect on tensile strengths, rupture lives and mechanical fatigue and they increased thermal fatigue, ballistic impact and hot corrosion resistance. By providing considerable exposure protection to the Rene 80, the coatings improved all properties compared to exposed bare specimens.

Medical examinations for radiation workers

The NASA radiological protection policy allows an employee to be assigned work in a radiologically controlled area only if all of the following conditions are met: (1) The area must be radiologically safe for the intended operations; (2) the employee must be medically fit; (3) the employee must be properly trained; (4) appropriate radiation protection procedures must be prepared; (5) appropriate dosimetric, survey, surveillance and reporting procedures must be implemented; and (6) adequate controls and records must be established.

Preliminary examination of lunar samples. Part A: A petrographic and chemical description of samples from the lunar highlands

Chemical, petrographic, and textural characteristics of a representative collection of the Apollo 16 rock and soil samples are reported. The macroscopic and microscopic texture are the result of two or more events in the history of any given sample. Cataclastic, highly crushed rocks are common along with complex intergrowths of shock-produced glass, devitrified glass, and pre-existing clasts. The dominant chemical feature is the high abundance of aluminum and calcium. In terms of their petrogenesis, the rocks are typed as cataclastically, and cataclysmically modified anorthosites; igneous; and polymict breccias.

Preliminary examination of lunar samples

An analysis of the lunar samples returned by Apollo 17 was conducted to determine the petrographic characteristics. A table listing all the rocks returned by Apollo 17 by sample number, weight, and rock type is presented. Photographs of lunar samples are included to show the variety of rocks returned. Lunar soils were collected to aid in characterizing the four major photogeologic units determined by preflight studies. Tables are developed to show grain size and grain type for the lunar soils. Radiographs of the drive tubes are interpreted to show the formations existing at various depths below the lunar surface.

Ultrasonic examination of welded joints of great thickness in mechanical equipment under pressure

The requirements involved in choosing ultrasonic devices, the factors that affect testing, and recommended calibration methods are discussed. The ultrasonic testing method is the only method that up to now permits detection of defects in welded joints of great thickness. The results are conditioned by the performances of the devices employed as well as by the degree of instruction of the personnel.

The use of digital techniques to examine the intermittent region of a turbulent jet

Voltage signals, sampled at a high rate in the intermittent region of a round jet, are analyzed to provide instantaneous velocity vector information and measures of the vorticity and dissipation scales. A clustering routine to assess the feasibility of using the voltage readings to define the vortical, nonvortical state of the flow is also utilized. The results indicate that the clustering routine is partially successful; more sophisticated discrimination techniques will be required for a complete specification.

An examination of injector/combustor design effects on scramjet performance

Description of a simplified one-dimensional treatment of fuel injection for supersonic combustor performance analysis. Representative mixing efficiency variations for both parallel and cross-stream injection are obtained, and approximate means for estimating the length required for complete mixing are demonstrated. Comparisons of calculated and measured data show good agreement.
