In a number of feasibility studies of turbine rotor designs, engineers of Cummins Engine Company, Inc.'s turbocharger group have utilized a computer program from COSMIC. Part of Cummins research effort is aimed toward introduction of advanced turbocharged engines that deliver extra power with greater fuel efficiency. Company claims use of COSMIC program substantially reduced software development costs.
Forty years ago, actuators requiring constant energy to help power the Apollo spacecraft in space were replaced by magnetically holding and releasing, electronically controlled valves. Today, these same magnetic, electronic valves are on the verge of replacing entire camshaft systems in cars and trucks on Earth, thus leading to a whole new generation of low-emission engines.

This report represents an example of a completed project for the CO2 Utilization program. The LCA for this example corresponds to the example product systems in the NETL openLCA Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) database. This example LCA represents a fictional microalgae-to-biofuel, hereafter called algae-to-biofuel, technology pathway.
